Re: [Dx4win] Querie

A slightly more complicated way is to create a custom logbook with the fields
that you need. You'd use the same filter, but using the Logbook view
(Window->Logbook) you can then either print it directly or export to a CSV file.

Hello Jean Paul,

Probably the easiest way is to filter (F8) for that station, look at the Same
Call window, and print that. Use and paste that into an
email or MS Word document.

Re: [Dx4win] Custom Award database update to fix Parks on the Air (POTA)

2023-10-31 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Hi Jim,

I think going to all 5-digit numbers for US parks has a benefit, at least
for the way I use the list to enter parks. When I work a POTA activation as
a hunter, I select POTA in the custom award field, tab to the Custom award
value field, press F1 then F2, then start typing the park number. For most
US parks this is fine, but it turns out that there are currently 456 parks
in Columbia, type doing a search for K-0400 initially brings up HK-0400. The
way I get around this is to right-click and turn off "search substring", and
then the search will match. If you go to 5 digit numbers K-00400 will only
match the US park, which solves the problem for me. If there's a way to
permanently turn off search substring I guess this would be a non-issue.

I don't have any parks with KFF- numbers so I can't comment on that piece.

I'm happy to try out a test version to see how that impacts my workflow
(hamflow?) if that would help.

David, K2DBK

Subject: [Dx4win] Custom Award database update to fix Parks on the Air
(POTA)

Hi Folks,

If you are not tracking the Parks on the Air (POTA) Custom Award in DX4WIN,
you can skip this message. The following mainly applies to users of DX4WIN
9.x.

PLEASE SEE THE QUESTIONS AT THE END. I do not want to make a change that is
going to hurt more people than it helps!!

The POTA group started issuing 5-digit reference numbers for parks in the
USA:

K-1=Power City State Fish and Wildlife Area [OR]

This causes a problem in DX4WIN because Custom Award reference numbers are
sorted strictly alphabetically. This means that these new park numbers will
get sorted like the following:

K-0999=Illini State Park [IL]
K-1=Power City State Fish and Wildlife Area [OR] K-10001=Jewell Meadows
State Fish and Wildlife Area [OR] K-10002=Ladd Marsh State Fish and Wildlife
Area [OR] K-10003=Phillip W. Schneider State Fish and Wildlife Area [OR]
K-10004=Bob Pyle Marsh Wildlife Management Area [IA] ...
K-10008=Klamath Hills BLM Recreation Management Area [OR] K-10009=Row River
National Recreation Trail [OR] K-1000=Illinois Beach State Park [IL]
K-10010=Fishermen's Bend BLM Recreation Management Area [OR] K-10011=OC
Woods Line State Trail State Trail [OR]

You can see that K-1 follows K-0999 (instead of K-) and K-1000 is
listed between between K-10009 and K-10010. This may make it hard to find
the correct park number when logging a QSO.

My proposed fix for this is to increase the reference numbers for parks in
(only) the USA from 4 to 5 digits. This means that:

K-0001=Acadia National Park [ME]

becomes:

K-1=Acadia National Park [ME]

If the cost of making this change is worse than the cost of having the
sorting by reference number be messed up, I can re-think this.

While fixing this, it exposed another problem that I did not anticipate.
When the POTA program started, parks in the USA were given reference numbers
beginning KFF-, such as this:

KFF-0001=Acadia National Park [ME]

At some point in the program, they changed all the reference numbers to use
K- instead:

K-0001=Acadia National Park [ME]

I thought I had changed the Custom Awards database for this, but I did not.
I would like to make this change now. However, each user will need to run a
Multiple QSO operation, Check Custom Awards, to map the old KFF- reference
numbers to the new K- reference numbers. If you do this correctly, it won't
affect any other Custom Awards that you may track in DX4WIN. I will send
more details when I release the new Custom Awards database.

For users of DX4WIN 8.05 and earlier:

1. I can not change the reference numbers from KFF- to K- for users of
DX4WIN 8.05 and earlier because there is no multiple QSO operation to do to
that.

2. For the 5-digit parks in the USA, instead of KFF-1, they will look
like KF-1. That is because DX4WIN only supports up to 8 characters for
a custom award reference number, and KFF-1 would be
9 characters, or one too many. This limitation was fixed in DX4WIN 9.x.

So for people who track the Parks on the Air custom award in DX4WIN 9.x,
which of the following do you prefer?

Proposal #1 - leave the 4-digit reference numbers for USA as they are today.
Add the new 5-digit reference numbers, knowing that sorting by reference
number will not be quite right.

Proposal #2 - convert all existing 4-digit reference numbers for USA parks
to 5-digits. This fixes the sorting, but will require an extra leading 0 to
find a park, for example, K-1234

The data is already in place, but it won't show up until the (expected)
start time of the DXpedition. You can see this for yourself by entering a
QSO offline, then changing the date to something like October 15, 2023, and
you'll see that the correct entity prefix is automatically filled in for

I guess I'd ask the typical first question: Have you tried rebooting your
computer?

If so and that hasn't worked, you may have to download and re-install the
application. Make sure you back up your DX4Wxxx directory before installing
to be safe. The info on AD1C's website about "Moving DX4WIN to Another
Computer" may be useful: https://ad1c.us/dx4win/appnotes/#moving_dx4win

I have found a program called "everything" (Freeware from
https://www.voidtools.com/downloads/) extremely handy in tracking files down.
It searches all your drives (hard or SSD) for a file name or wildcarded name
you specify (Ex: *.DXQ) and then displays a list. You can sort by any column
displayed by clicking the column heading. I often sort by the "Date Modified"
column so most recently modified files will show first. That's usually when I
find the file created some place I wasn't expecting. It also supports MANY
languages.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the product other than being a pleased
user.

I no longer have 8.05 so the info here is from version 9, but it should be
similar. The only settings that matter on the Packet1 tab would be Type set

The fact that you can connect to some clusters and not other is possibly an

found all the Packet Setup Parameters blank. For example, the Type window is
blank. If I click on the arrow inside the window it shows a choice of None
or Regular. If I click on either, the choices disappear, but the Type
window is still blank. The same is true of the COM Port, Baud Rate, Flow,
Data/Parity, etc. All these had entries before but are now blank.

To make it more confusing, I could still connect to a distant server, but
couldn't connect to any in New England.

Firefox, email, and packet spots on N1MM+ Logger are all working OK.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I'm not sure where it's in the manual, but if you have the cursor in the
main QSO entry window and press F1 (Help), you can click on QSO in the
window that comes up and it will tell you all the details.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

That did it ...
I hate to have to print out another manual againhee hee
it took almost 300 pages last time... with the new additions.
I still have the original I got for the version 6 or 7 or something.

It worked

And just out of curiosity, where did you find it in the manual?
I will put a sticky note on that page.

I have about 500 old QSL cards that I had in a pile, mostly IOTA
confirmations and a lot of rare DX cards. I was hoping to up my count on
confirmations and this will help greatly.

Thanks again..

I am going through all my logs, trying to confirm QSL cards I found, some 40
years old and I am trying to show they were received and confirmed. My
entry window lost the bottom three entry windows to show the QSL received
and confirmed.
I lost it under the Notes for this QSO and cannot figure out how to put it

It shows the QSL date and confirmations.

I looked in that big book and still can't find it. How to put it back on
the screen.

Any help for this old man would be appreciated

Hi, Peter.

A little more information would help troubleshoot your problem. What OS are
you running? How exactly does the icon "say the program started"?
Does DX4Win.exe show up in the task manager apps running list? What happens
when you left click on the DX4Win icon in the taskbar? When you right click?
What happens when you try to run DX4Win from the Start Menu?

Re: [Dx4win] New Printer - Label Issue

2021-07-12 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Hi Bud,

The exact process is going to differ depending on which version of Windows
you're using and which printer, but here are some things to try:

After you click "Print" to print the labels, the next pop-up should be
"Report Setup". Click the "Setup" button there. You should get another
pop-up with a heading that says "Print Setup". Click the button that says
"Properties..." and you should get another pop-up with a bunch of options.
This is the pop-up that varies the most depending on your printer, but look
for something that says "2-sided Printing" or "Print on both sides of the
page", or something similar. You'll want to disable that and it should fix
your problem.

I'll mention that what I wrote assumes you're using Windows 10 and DX4WIN
version 9, though the process will likely be similar on other versions.

One thing to do is to check the sort order for the spots in the DX Spots
window: Right-click, then sort and arrival is likely what you want. If you have

Subject: [Dx4win] Cluster spots

I use CC User to link to a cluster and then the spots are fed into DX4Win.
The issue seems to be caused by the cluster spots not having a date (only time)
or I am not picking up the date properly.

In the morning say at 09:00 when the bands are quiet and not many spots, my DX
spots window in DX4Win starts with the spots from 00:00 to (say)
09:00 but then shows the spots from 09:00 to 23:59 **for the previous day**.
It is not a big job to delete the yesterdays spots, however, after a few hours
(say at 11:00) I suddenly find the spots for 11:00 to
23:59 for the previous day have been re-populated.

When the bands are busy the problem goes away because there are enough of
today's spots to fill the window.

I am assuming the cluster does not **push** the spots out again, so how/why is
either CC User or DX4Win asking for the last 100 spots again?

Can anyone shed any light on this or should I approach the CC User forum

Re: [Dx4win] How to select from long list with custom awards?

2021-06-04 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Thanks Jim.

What I found is that if I do F1 to bring up the list, F2 to sort by reference,
then right-click and disable "search substring" I can get to K-4567 without
running into the problem of hitting HK-4567 instead. What I'm trying to figure
out is if I can have "search substring" toggled off by default, since there's
no key associated with it.

But this is still a lot better than what I was doing, thanks.

Hi David,

It works like all other DX4WIN Awards. Select POTA (or Parks on the
Air) in the Custom Award field. Tab into the Custom Award Value field. Type
F1 to get a list of values. Type F2 to sort them by reference number. Then
type in the reference number i.e. "K-4567" and it should automatically scroll
down the list to that park. Since DX4WIN uses substring searching, you may get
"HK-4567" instead, so I just pull the vertical scroll bar down until I get
close to the right reference number, then arrow up/down from there.

Re: [Dx4win] FW: DX4WIN + WSJT-X COM Port Control

2021-02-05 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I have a license for Win4Icom and while I haven't completed the setup, using
that plus a piece of software that creates virtual COM ports (like COM0COM)
this should work. Tom has a writeup of exactly what you need to do here:
https://icom.va2fsq.com/third-party-software-and-hardware-integration/

If I get some time over the weekend I'll see if I can set this up, but the
general concept is you use Win4Icom to listen on the "Real" serial port,
then it replicates out to the virtual ports. Then, in DX4WIN and WSJT-X, you
use different ports and everything thinks it's got control of the radio.

Now that Guy mentions it, I believe I am using the USB port on the back of
my IC-7610 for WSJT-X, and the microKEYER for DX4WIN and Write Log (the
latter two of which I also can use simultaneously). The radio's USB
interface are a requirement for using Win4ICOM:

https://icom.va2fsq.com/

I have played around with this but my trial of the software ran out.
It might also provide a second COM Port for radio control.

Finally, I used LP-Pan when I had my YAESU FTDX-5000 as my primary radio.
They recommend a particular port splitter to use with it.
That's another option, and I don't believe that port splitter is specific to
the LP-Pan software.

Re: [Dx4win] Trouble with dx cluster.

2021-01-01 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Looks like db0sue is not responding on the dx cluster ports, although the
server itself is up. The “forcefully rejected” message means that the server
received your request to connect and said the equivalent of “I won’t let you
connect there”. In the case of the W4MR cluster it wasn’t responding at all so
in that case it’s like calling a telephone and getting no answer. In your case,
you called and they hung up on you. (Yes IP purists, that is a simplified
explanation).

For what it’s worth, the error you got (Winsock error 10061) is what you get
from Windows (almost) any time you get a connection failure.

Again, the solution in this case is to contact the owner of the cluster. Good
luck!

Running version 9.0 on a Windows 10 laptop. Suddenly without warning I

cannot connect to my normal dx cluster over the internet. When I attempt to

connect my call appears in the top packet window. I can however connect to

other clusters.

Re: [Dx4win] Unique calls

2020-06-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Cesar was asking about unique calls, what you've suggested would give you
all JA calls. Also, to do what you've suggested you need to us F8 in the QSO
window (search) and you'd want to put JA in the Prefix field, not the
callsign field. Even with a wildcard (JA*) in the callsign field you'd only
get calls matching exactly JA*, you would get things like JR, JH, etc.
However, with that said, you could use that to filter down then export from
logbook. Personally I'd just use F8, enter JA in the Prefix field and 80m in
the Band field. You'll have the results in the Logbook, which you can export
using "write to file". You'd then import the resulting CSV file and use one
of the spreadsheet programs to find the uniques. (There are other tools to
do that, but it seems like most folks have access to at least some form of
spreadsheet program.

Yes, very easy.

This is one of the things I love about DX4Win.

Open the country window.
Open the logbook window.
In the QSO window, type JA in the callsign field. Do NOT press Enter or Tab
or anything Double click "80" in the country window and your logbook will
contain only 80m JA QSO's.
Scroll down the logbook window and you will see how many JA's on 80 you have
worked.

Re: [Dx4win] Ideas for development

2019-11-27 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I'm trying to understand the issue. Let's say I work you at some point on 20M
CW, then I work you again in a contest again on 20M CW. I import the ADIF file,
are you saying that you should get a warning that I've worked you before? I
don't understand why that would be a problem. Like many of us, this happens all
the time.

If you're talking about preventing a truly duplicate QSO from being imported
(same band, mode, and time), that's what the "Imported QSO is ignored" setting
is for on the Options for duplicate QSOs dialog when importing.

I use this all the time because for FT-8, I just feed it my whole log every
time I import and it ignores the duplicate.

Hi Dan
Re garding dupes, I do not mean during a contest (every contest program will do
that) but for the general log.
Example
I have run a specific contest program, and have exported to an adif file. I
need to import this file into DX4Win. This is where each imported QSO should be
compared to the global log and show someting when itis a dupe (same band and
same mode)

Re: [Dx4win] Ideas for development

2019-11-25 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I disagree with respect to Clublog. It's been around long enough and is
increasing in popularity. It has a real API interface to do
uploads/downloads, and from what I've seen it seems likely that Michael,
G7VJR, is very aware that changing the API without warning would break a lot
of things and will make sure that doesn't happen. The same argument could be
made for the existing support for LoTW and eQSL, and admittedly without any
hard data, I'd bet that Clublog is used at least as much as eQSL, if not
more.

There's already an option for this and it is done by enabling the Contest
Mode. The problem is that this mode gets reset every time DX4Win is
restarted. I keep asking for an option to remember being enabled on restart
or by running a command key, but...
> 3/ Allow automatic upload to Clublog, which MANY of us are using.

Not realistic, since not only do sites like this come and go, but any change
in the site's upload procedure would require a change in the DX4Win
programming, and with the plethora of log upload sites (LOTW, eQSL, QRZ,
CLubLog, etc) this would be a logistical nightmare.

The above are personal opinions, not an official DX4Win positions, of
course.

Re: [Dx4win] Modes FT4 And JS8

2019-08-17 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I don’t believe that D4W will automatically change the older ones to properly
reflect FT4, I think you need to re-import. It’s easy enough to check, press F8
to do a search for mode MFSK and sub-mode FT4 (you probably don’t need the
submode) and see if anything comes up. If not, just re-import and then do a
LoTW export and upload.

Re: [Dx4win] D4W v9 memory size?

2019-08-14 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Years and years ago, before Windows, if you had an executable that was 25KB
that's what it took to run, plus whatever extra memory it requested from the
operating system for variables.

Short version of what follows: Programs with GUI interfaces (in particular) use
a lot more memory than just the executable itself.

Longer version:

Under Windows, the size of the program itself is only part of what's required
and the explanation can get very complicated. I've got a tool (Google
"sysinternals VMMap" if you're interested) that shows what all the memory is
used for. Briefly, about 4MB is in fact used for the executable code. However,
another roughly 50MB is used to load DLLs (dynamic linked libraries) that the
program needs to operate. There is another MB used for mapped files, which is a
quick way to store data so it doesn't have to be fetched from disk every time
it's needed. A simple example is are things like the cities, states, lakes,
rivers, etc. that are needed for the map, but a whopping 18MB is used to cache
fonts. (I'd need to check, but that's probably something common to Windows
programs). There's another 35MB of Shareable memory which can be used for
things like inter-process communication. I can't tell specifically what it's
used for, Paul would have to tell you. There's 15MB used for various stacks,
which is part of how programs run. The biggest remaining chunk at about 210MB
is for Private Data, which is typically used for variables in the program.
Again, Paul would have to explain how things are organized in the program.

For those of you keeping score, you'll note that what's shown adds up to way
over 193MB. In fact, adding in a few things that I left out shows that there is
actually just under 354MB allocated to the dx4win.exe process. Where does the
195MB number come from? That's what's known as private memory that's directly
"charged" to the program that can't be used by the system for anything else.
All the other memory is (sort of) shareable between other processes if more
memory is needed. It turns out that of that 195MB the vast majority is used by
Private Data (189MB) and the rest by portions of all of the rest.

So in summary, there's unlikely to actually be anything wrong here at all.
While it seems astonishing to those of us who grew up and built PCs and did
upgrades by buying 256 BYTE chips one at a time when we could afford them, this
might seem totally insane, but we live in a world where a machine with 4GB of
RAM is probably considered the bare minimum these days (running Windows; Linux
can be massively more frugal).

For those of you who already know about this kind of thing, I'm aware that I've
simplified a lot and left out a lot of details, and I've kind of mangled the
concept of Private Bytes vs. Working Set, etc.). This was the best simple-ish
explanation I could come up with and still try to answer Len's question. Flames
to me off-list please.

Re: [Dx4win] Communication between DX4WIN and IC7600 does not work

2019-06-30 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Hi Mel,

I've got the same radio and am running the same version of Windows.

My setup is similar to yours, though I've slightly modified the ON4AOI_500Hz to
turn the filter off. I'm also using a baud rate of 19200 instead of 9600,
although as long as the settings in DX4WIN match the radio it should work fine.

One other difference is that I've got the poll rate set to 1000ms. I'd try
dropping to that to see if it makes a difference.

If you want, I can send you the .rig file I'm using (I don't think the list
allows attachments).

One other thing, had this been working at some point but stopped, or is this
your first try at getting it going?

Communication between DX4WIN and my ICOM 7600 does not work.

If I would like to grab a station from the Band Map the frequency changes
accordingly in the Frequency field but after approximately 5 seconds it changes
back to the previous frequency and nothing happens on the radio.

However, information from radio to program works nicely. If I turn the VFO
frequency changes in the Frequency field accordingly. The same is true for band
and mode changes.

Both N1MM and DXlog works nicely both directions.
I need help with suggestions what to do?

Re: [Dx4win] dx4win log to WSJT-X

2019-06-30 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Normally I'd recommend making a backup of the wsjt-x log but if it's been
wiped, there's not going to be anything to back up.

I'd give what you're suggesting a try. The worst thing that would happen is
if the file format is incompatible, you'd likely get an error when starting
wsjt-x. If that happens, just delete the file.

And I'll put in the obligatory reminder that backing up your computer is
always a good idea.

(Shameless plug coming)

I've personally used Backblaze for years
(https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-backup.html) and it's saved me more than a
few times. One of the best parts: You just install it and it does it's
thing. You don't need to run anything, it doesn't completely clobber your
system when it runs like some others, and restoring is easy. You can get a
30 day free trial. If you decide to sign up, you can use this link
https://secure.backblaze.com/r/00lxyo (I think you can use that for the
trial as well) and we both get an extra month free.

If you've got more questions about backups, please contact me off-list.

Importing QSOs from wsjtx_log.adi into DX4WIN log. Specify to ignore dupes.
In 9.0.4 this worked nicely, only importing new QSOs.
Now with 9.0.5 it created approximately 140 duplicate QSOs out of 1000+ QSOs
in the wsjtx log.
These added Qs differ by a minute.

The import preferences are the same for both versions of DX4WIN 60 & 1800.

Any ideas?

Re: [Dx4win] FT4

2019-06-08 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
If you're using the latest version (2.1.0-rc7) it will import as MFSK and will
put this comment in the Notes for this QSO field:

Import:{Submode=FT4}

For whatever reason, the ADIF guys decided that although FT8 is it's own mode,
FT4 is a submode of MFSK. Unfortunately D4W doesn't recognize FT4 so it accepts
the import as MFSK without a submode.

Once Paul does an update to support FT4, I guess I'll need to go back and fix
those QSOs.

If you've logged QSOs using rc5, they'll come in with a QSO note saying that
it's Mode=FT4. I changed those to DATA (I can't remember what mode they
originally imported as).

2019-03-15 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I don't know if that's possible. Apparently there is a version of Windows 10
for the RPI, but it's not exactly full Windows, it's a version specifically
for IOT. Here's a link to an article that I found:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-10-raspberry-pi-hands-on,38629.htm
l

More importantly, unless Paul decides to compile DX4WIN so that it will on
the ARM processor, it wouldn't run even if Windows does. (The Windows for
IOT build was built by Microsoft specifically for the RPI and is compiled
for the ARM processor). I would think that this also applies to trying to
use an emulator like WINE, though it's an interesting concept.

bit cumbersome in the digital age.
So what do you guys do?
1) Manually transfer the info to DX4WIN after the radio connection times
out, have to remember to enter all the band data, etc

2) The 990 has in addition to the USB virtual COM connection, a real COM

I agree with Jim, and specifically, I believe the specific file is
http://www.dx4win.com/files/updatesv9/update.INF. You should be able to pull

I just tried "Check for Updates" here and it worked. I suspect your
anti-virus/firewall isn't allowing DX4WIN to access the Internet for the
purpose of updating. I believe the "control file" is on the server, not
part of the DX4WIN installation.

Also make sure the installation directory is not under Program Files (x86).

Re: [Dx4win] Problem connecting a IC7600

Hi Mel,

I guess I have a couple of thoughts: Did you install the Icom USB driver?
You're supposed to do that before ever plugging in the radio, although I'm
not sure how important that is. I am guessing that you did since you said it
works with N1MM. I have my baud rate set to 19200 and the CI-V address set
to 7A. Here are the other settings since maybe this will help:

CI-V Transceive: Off
CI-V Output (for ANT): Off
USB Serial Function: CI-V

In DX4WIN, I have the poll rate set to 1000ms and Max tries set to 6.

I've attached a copy of the RIG file that I use. It's basically the same as
the standard 7600_500 except that I think I changed the filter to default to
off.

Re: [Dx4win] JTAlert and DX4WIN

2018-06-02 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Paul will have to answer #1.

For #2, what I do is to periodically do an import from wsjtx_log.adi into
D4W. I don't ever clear that log and have the import set to ignore duplicate
QSOs. I use D4W for my "log of record" so I don't care about exporting
confirmed QSOs to WSJT-X. It's not automated but I doubt the import process
takes more than 30 seconds.

My current workflow looks like this (with thanks to Jim, AD1C for his
suggestion about using Clublog):

1) Work some stations in WSJT-X
2) Shut down WSJT-X, start DX4WIN (I don't run them at the same time because
I'd have to deal with com port conflicts
3) Import the wsjt_log.adi file into D4W.
4) Run a LOTW export
5) Import that file into Clublog
6) Sync with LOTW

It probably took me almost as long to type it as to actually do it.

There have been some tricks posted as to how to quickly get to the
wsjt_log.adi file when importing it, you can find them in the list archives.
Personally, I've marked that file as a favorite, so whenever I open a file
dialog box I just click on "Quick Access" and the file is right there.

I have two questions:

1. Does DX4WIN developer, KK4HD, have any plans to provide support for this?

2. Are any DX4WIN users currently using JTAlert by exporting a copy of the
DX4WIN log into a format supported by JTAlert, and importing it back into
DX4WIN. If so, please describe your procedure and experiences.

Is this a known problem?

I do NOT hit enter after typing in VERSION for the call. When you type
VERSION in the call box the QSL Mgr window will fill and show the date of
latest revision and the CTY window prefix will show the designation that Jim
used for that revision. Once you have noted these entries simply highlight
VERSION and hit delete and it goes away without becoming part of the log

If you press enter after typing "version" in the log window, you will log
that as a contact and will later have to go back and delete it.

If you go to preferences/qso and check Callsign update, the desired results
will show up in the country box and in the qsl mgr box without pressing the
enter key. This way you won't have to go in and delete the contact you just
logged.

Another plus of checking this box is that as soon as the first few of
letters of the call of someone you want to work is entered, the country will
pop up. You won't have to type in the whole call to see what country it is
from. Handy if you just want to know the origin of a call.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Dx4win] Interface JT-Alert with DX4WIN?

2018-04-06 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
There doesn't appear to be a simple way to do this, as far as I can tell. I
think that Paul would need to make some kind of an interface available.

There might be some way to have JT-AlertX do a period ingest of an ADI file to
get the countries, but I just decided that I'd treat everything as a new one on
FT8 so I haven't bothered to try (though fortunately my needed list of ATNO is
small enough to enter manually).

From his email:
I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-
symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.
Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%
C:
dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save
E:

5. Finally, create the link. Here is the command I used:

E:\dx4w903\save> mklink /D WSJT-X C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

(do not type the part *before* the >, only the part beginning with "mklink"

That's all there is to it. The next time you want to import using "File |
Import", you will see the WSJT-X link in your SAVE directory.
Double-click on that link, and you'll find your WSJT-X ADIF file there.

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-04-01 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
If you're connected to the Internet, there is always some risk. Since Windows
XP isn't being patched anymore, there are vulnerabilities that can be exploited
regardless of what anti-virus/anti-malware/firewall you run. Your machine
could, for instance, become part of a botnet (See:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botnet).

Turning off your computer when not using it doesn’t make much of a difference,
you can get infected in a fraction of a second.

I will say that you are doing the right thing by running anti-virus, etc., but
you are going to be more vulnerable to infections.

At some point pretty much all Internet traffic will be encrypted. Encryption
along doesn't prevent viruses, but it does reduce the risk.

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-04-01 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Realistically, for this use case, the risk is pretty minimal. You're
fetching data files for a programs that contain no information that could be
considered sensitive. In theory, it makes it easier for someone to spoof the
source website, so someone potentially could cause your session to be
redirected to a different website and you'd download a set of files that
aren't official, but that's about it. Unless there's some specific flaw in
the program that could somehow be leveraged to do something other than what
it's supposed to do (highly unlikely), the really isn't a risk. (Bear in
mind that if you want to be 100% secure, you need to disconnect your
computer from the Internet, then from the power source, then throw it into
one of those industrial shredders.)

A bigger risk would be if the main website didn't use HTTPS (it does).

A little digging shows that this is hosted by qth.com. It might be possible
to have a single website (dx4win.com) not redirected to https, but A) That's
a terrible idea, and B) Sooner or later this is going to become a problem
for almost every website, as https is becoming standard for everyone.

The only short-term workaround that I can think of would be to host the
actual files on a different website without https and work up a manual
process to download and install. (No Jim, I am not suggesting
son-of-dxupdate-for-XP-only).

That's it. Either the March 12th website certificate update caused this, or
whomever is running the dx4win.com website enabled automatic redirection
from http to https.
To support Windows XP, that redirect will need to be turned off.
Unfortunately, this has a security impact for everyone not running Windows

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN 9.0.4 Can not update.

2018-03-24 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Sergey (and anyone else this has happened to),

If you post to the list and your message is blank when delivered, it's
because you sent it using HTML (or "Rich" ) format. This is the default
for some email programs, and unfortunately it appears that this list is
probably filtering that out, so the message appears blank. The message
will likely be delivered to any off-list recipients correctly (I see
that Jim, AD1C was copied directly) but anyone reading this on the list
will only see the message footer.

@Paul: I know that "in the old days" people were pretty reluctant to
allow HTML and/or MIME attachments, but those seem to be a lot more
common. Any chance of getting the list modified to allow those? (I speak
as someone who, with Thunderbird as my mail client, gets bitten by this
all the time.)

Re: [Dx4win] Search for RST = 0

2018-03-17 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Cesar,

That doesn't work for me. Since you can't post images here, I took a
screenshot of an example where the rstR was zero (just to prove that
there are some with a 0 in that field; there are others) and have put
the link to that screenshot below. Searching for /0 results in a No
Matching QSO found popup. This using version 9.0.4.1176 which I believe
is the latest version. I don't think this was an issue in 8.05

Re: [Dx4win] Logging FT8 qsos in V9

2018-02-24 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Short version: Take the ADI file that WSJT-X creates, import into D4W
making sure that it's set to "Imported QSO is ignored". Everything is
imported correctly into D4W complete with correct rstS & rstR report
(e.g., -15, whatever). No need to clear the file afterwards. Very simple.

I don't normally run D4W when doing FT-8 but no harm in that.

I can send you a screenshot separately, it won't post to the list.

On 2/24/2018 10:08 AM, Ed Stratton wrote:

ok, newbie to FT8. Made my first FT8 Qso last night, I think (lol)

WSJT has the CAT control of my FTdx5000, so when I bring up DX4win, I get
the com error, and just close it a move on, so that DX4Win comes up and
runs normally without CAT radio control.
Not sure if this ok or not, but seems no harm no foul.

My PC is running XP, DX4Win v9, and WSJT.

A few questions:

1), I just did an 'off line' QSO addition to the log file in DX4Win. Is
that how it is done, manually every time? Since you can't 'grab' the WSJT
QSO information with a click to import into DX4Win.

2). I just logged this qso as FT8, with 599s each way.
Did not log the db received information that WSJT provided, I assume that
599 is not the way to report the FT8 levels.

3.) Do you just log all FT8 QSOs in WSJT, and then Export / Import the
WSJT adi file into DX4Win? (just like you would do for N1MM+ etc)
a.) If yes what does the RST send and received look like in DX4Win for
this import? Is there a SCREEN shot I could reference somewhere to visually
look at?

b.) Is yes, after the import into DX4Win, do you go back into WSJT and
clear the .adi log, so that next export / import you don't get a duplicate
message in DX4Win?

4.) I have been reading about JTalert, this program seems to have the
ability to provide a logging 'channel' between WSJT and some other logging
programs. Does or will DX4Win have this capability? Is so is there
documentation available for setup?

5.) Lastly I did see Jim's W10 script for moving qso automatically from
WSJT into DXWin, would that work on XP platform?

Thanks in advance for responses, please do a REPLY ALL, so everyone can
read your responses to my Qs above.

Re: [Dx4win] Invalid QSOs

2018-02-06 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Unfortunately, setting that to 0 does not help. According to the Clublog
article
(http://clublog.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/55830-update-skip-or-delete-qsos),
here's the only thing that will mark as invalid:

 * Set the DXCC country to "Not valid for DXCC" or equivalent, putting
   a DXCC country value of zero in the ADIF file;
 * Set the QSL value to 'I' for 'invalid';

D4W doesn't normally create an ADIF value for either DXCC country or set
the QSL valid to I regardless if the DXCC award value is set to I or if
either of the RST values is set to zero.

I'm not sure if this will work, but I'm thinking of exporting just the
QSOs that I've marked as invalid, adding in one of these fields, and
uploading. If I don't subsequently re-upload with a changed value, I
think that might do the trick.

On 2/6/2018 5:25 PM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote:

I think setting RST to "0" works.

It's not "automatic" in the sense that you still need to go to
Help->Check for updates. Once you're there, if there are updates, yes,
they will download and install automatically.

Some applications will automatically check periodically without manual
intervention, but D4W doesn't do that.

Re: [Dx4win] New V.9.0.4 malfunction on XP

2018-01-11 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I'm not using Windows XP but I'm curious: Do you see the same thing if
you use the keypad - or + keys to adjust the speed? (To be honest, I
didn't even know about Alt-F9 & Alt-F10, I've always just used the - and +).

One comment I'll throw out to anyone still running Windows XP: As I'm
sure you know, Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. If you
are continuing to use it, please make sure you are not connected to the
Internet. Microsoft stopped providing support to the general public
(even for security and critical issues) in 2014 (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP#End_of_support for details)
which means that you will be at risk. The risk is not only to your
machines but your machine could become part of a botnet, meaning that it
can be used to attack other systems, etc.

Re: [Dx4win] Export DX4WIN Log To WSJT-X

2018-01-03 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

The WSJT-X manual says this:

The log file|wsjtx_log.adi|is updated whenever you log a QSO
from/WSJT-X/. (Keep in mind that if you erase this file you will lose
all “worked before” information.) You can append or overwrite
the|wsjtx_log.adi|file by exporting your QSO history as an ADIF file
from another logging program. Turning*Show DXCC entity and worked before
status*off and then on again will cause/WSJT-X/to re-read the log file.
Very large log files may cause/WSJT-X/to slow down when searching for calls.

So, you could just export your log as ADIF from DX4WIN using
File->Import/Export then overwrite or combine it with what's in
wsjt_log.adi.

A better alternative (recommended in the WSJT-X documentation) would be
to use JT-AlertX (available at http://hamapps.com/). That has a lot more
alerting features, and I think there's a way that you can have it do a
one-time scan of any log file to "catch up". You can find more
information about that at the website I mentioned.

I use JTAlertX myself, but I intentionally didn't "pre-load" as I want
it to tell me about any country that I haven't worked on FT8, which of
course would pick up an ATNO or anything else I needed, which is why I'm
not 100% sure how to "pre-load" what you've worked already.

Re: [Dx4win] IC-7610 INI File

2017-12-08 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

I'll be happy to write one if you'll ship me your radio. ;-)

Try the 7600 as a starting point, see if that works, although I recall
reading on the 7610 reflector that it may need a different default port
number. If you're not comfortable doing that yourself, I can do it and
send you the RIG file. If that does work, it won't be able to use all
the features, but it'll be a starting point.

Re: [Dx4win] FT8 Mode Search

2017-10-29 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
First, what option did you use on the Import as the option for
duplicates? If you used "Imported QSO is ignored" and you already had
those QSOs in your log, you'd need to pay attention to the display that
comes up that says how many were actually imported and how many were
ignored. For example, I just read in the WSJT-X ADIF file which has 866
QSOs in it and it said:

Import Finished

866 QSOs were read
[A bunch of other stuff]
866 Duplicate QSOs were processed

In that case, it didn't import anything because they were already there.

If you hadn't previously imported or otherwise entered them, I'd suggest
that you look at one QSO that you know is in there and see what the mode
is set to, we can then figure it out from there.

I looked at the WSJT-X log. It consisted of 434 FT8 QSO’s.

Why none found in the search?

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Question

2017-10-20 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi RIck,

This sounds like an issue with either the radio, cable, or driver. I
can't think of any reason why D4W itself would stop communicating with
the radio other than if perhaps you changed the address on either the
radio or within the software to not match what the other is expecting.
It appears that the default for the 7851 is 8E, you could check
File->Preferences->Radio and make sure the address is set to 8E there,
then note the baud rate there and go into the menu (on my 7600 it's in
the menu "Others" and would be next to CI-V Baud Rate and Address. Make
sure those match.

Other than checking the cables, the only other thing I can think of is
to test with some other software that controls your radio, if you've got
something.

(Sorry about the blank message to the list, my email client sometimes
decides to send rich text which gets stripped by the list. I think I
fixed it.)

Re: [Dx4win] Problem Getting DX4Win to work on a new computer

2017-05-31 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Carol,

I'd argue that yes, you should upgrade, but there is a simple solution:

I found this in the archive from Paul from January 2005:

Paul,

The example given was for winNT/XP. For Windows/98 there is a different
driver and destination directory. From the on-line help:

for Win/95/98:
Windows\System\Vichw11.vxd

for Win/NT/2000/XP:
WinNT\System32\Divers\Vichw11.sys

I made some modifications in 6.04 to see if we can eliminate the problem.

The searchable mail archives are at
http://www.mail-archive.com/dx4win@mailman.qth.net/ and are a great
resource.

where the call used for the announcement is.

Re: [Dx4win] Can not get DX spots to talk to radio

2017-04-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
I don't know if this will help at all, but I put a copy of the Rig file
I'm using up my website at https://k2dbk.com/ICOM%207600_K2DBK.rig. You
can also just go to https://k2dbk.com and scroll down to where it says
"K2DBK's 7600 rig file for DX4Win". I will be honest, I modified it from
ON4AOI's original and I can't remember specially what change I made or
why, but I know that it works for me in the current state. Maybe give it
a shot and see if it helps?

I would also suggest that you install the USB driver since that's what
Icom recommends and I don't know what happens if you don't. Be sure to
take a system restore point before you do in case of any issues. Here's
a link to how to do that for Windows 7:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17127/windows-back-up-restore

Finally, I will mention that I'm running Windows 10, but I'm not sure if
that is a factor here.

Hi Steve,

Can you provide more details about the new configuration? It sounds like
D4W is seeing the frequency information so however you've got it hooked
up at least it's able to read that.. Are you using the USB adapter for
CI-V control? Assuming so since you said you turned translate (I think
you meant transceive) off. Did you install the USB drivers before you
connected? The documentation warns about doing that, but I don't know
specifically what happens if you connect without the drivers being in
place first.

I guess the other things to check would be to make sure that when you
transferred over to the new computer that the setup in Preferences for
the radio match what you've got configured, in particular the port and
baud rate settings. (Although if you're getting frequency information,
it would seem less likely that's an issue.)

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN

2017-04-06 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Cort,

My answer to you was incorrect. I did a few tests starting DX4WIN
normally (not with autohotkey) and this is what I found:

As you said, when you first start, it defaults to showing the last QSO
logged. Note that at this point, it's not in "add real-time" mode and
status underneath where it says "File Radio Help" is blank. Also, the
text in the Callsign field is highlighted. At this point, a couple of
things can happen:

-If you hit F9 (just one keystroke), the status changes to "Add
real-time" and the callsign QSO window is re-initialized, ready to enter
a new contact. Entering a contact here causes no issues.

-If you simply type over the callsign in the QSO window, as you
said it does overwrite the last logged QSO, although you do have to
click "Yes" to the "Do you want to save the changes" dialog box that
pops up, so it's not doing it without warning. This is essentially the
same as using F8 to find a QSO, highlighting the callsign, then hitting
enter.

So it appears that there is in fact no way that I can find to have it
start in Add real-time mode. The best I can offer is the Autohotkey
solution I mentioned.

Incidentally, I've tweaked my AHK script a bit. If anyone is interested,
contact me individually so we don't clog up the list.

well, then you have the answer... how do you get it to open in
ADD-REAL TIME? This is exactly what I want it to do. I never open any

loads up at start up so radio and computer are talking first then I
select either DX4WIN or Writelog... shut down goes in reverse. Thanks,

Re: [Dx4win] question

2017-04-05 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Ian,

I can't speak for the author regarding why it works that way, and I
agree that I'd prefer to have it come up with a empty QSO log field as
well as automatically connecting to the packet.

I'm happy to share my Autohotkey script, but please understand that I'm
not an AHK expert. I'll do my best to help as best I can, but I can't
promise anything. Also, this is nothing like one of AD1C's nicely
polished programs, but hopefully it'll work as a starting point for some
of you. Autohotkey has some far more sophisticated functionality, but
the script here is pretty close to just brute force.

First, you'll need a copy of Autohotkey which you can download from
https://autohotkey.com/

There are tutorials there and that's where you can go for help. You'll
want to put this script into the AHK startup file (instructions to edit
that file are included in the help). I've got it set to invoke the AHK
sequence when I type Windows+Z. (Why that? It wasn't used for anything
else on my machine.)

Script starts below:

#z::
IfWinNotExist Packet Window
{
Run C:\ham Program Files\dx4w805\dx4win.exe
Sleep 4500
}

IfWinExist Packet Window
{
WinActivate
Send {Enter}{Enter}{Enter}{F7}{F9}{F9}
}

IfWinExist K2DBK sorted by Date
{
WinActivate
Send {F9}
}

; end of script

Here's what it does: First, if it finds that there's no window named
"Packet Window" (the name of the Packet Window in D4W), it runs the D4W
executable. You'll probably need to change the location of the
executable. The Sleep 4500 tells it to wait a bit so that all the
windows can finish opening. This is the number of milliseconds, so
that's 4 1/2 seconds. You may need to tune that as well.

Next, if it finds that the Packet Window is open, it makes it active,
sends 3 Enters, which causes the packet site selection window to open
and selects the first cluster site in that window. (For recent versions,
that will be the last one you used.) I have F7 in the packet window set
to send my callsign. You can change this, or you could just have it send
your callsign right from the script if you want. The next couple of F9's
should cause it to go to the QSO entry window and blank the entry field,
but I think I need to adjust the timing since it doesn't quite work right.

The next block of code is finds the main QSO entry window (that's the
title it has for me, you'll need to change that), makes it the active
window, and sends an F9 to clear it.

Again, this is purely a "good enough for me" kind of thing. I can try to
provide some suggestions to folks, but depending on how you have D4W
configured you may have to make some minor changes or possibly it won't
work at all for you.

On 4/5/2017 5:29 PM, Ian Trusson wrote:

David

But why, when DX4WIN starts, doesn't it come up automatically with the QSO
entry blank? Every time I start DX4WIN I have to hit F9 so the frequency of
my radio is received into the QSO window from the radio via the CAT
connection and the frequency is sent to my Expert 1K-FA amplifier to set the
ATU for the correct frequency sub band. When I first switch on before
hitting F9 I hear nothing from my receiver because the ATU is not tuned!

However DX4WIN has always had this problem so I guess it will not get
changed any time soon so any further detailed info you could provide about
using AutoHotKey to overcome the F9 problem and automatically connect the
packet window could be very useful to many of us.

If the program opened in the Add Real Time mode, then it would expect
data from the transceiver, i.e. frequency, mode and such. However, if
the radio wasn't on at the time of starting DX4Win, it would go into a
radio time-out of whatever time in seconds is set up for, then
promptly default into Stop Radio mode. That would be a pain in the ass
for those who frequently start DX4Win with the xceiver off. Once the
program is up and running, it is easy enough to just press F9 and get
it ready to log. After a while, it becomes a second nature.

This is probably more something for the LoTW group, but unless something
has changed you can't download a QSO that isn't a QSL. In other words,
it has to match for you to get it. That's one of the security features

Is it possible that you had a different log file open on that day, or
possibly lost the QSOs for some other reason?

Re: [Dx4win] no 8.05 version for download of Data Updater

2016-05-22 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
The version of the downloader is unrelated to the version of DX4WIN, it
just happens to be be close. (Remember that Jim, AD1C, built that and a
bunch of other tools to help the DX4WIN community.)

I just tried download and it worked fine, so I don't think that's it.

If you've got any anti-virus software you might want to see if you can
temporarily disabled it, that might be blocking it.

If that doesn't work, I can send you a copy directly via email
(off-list), let me know if you'd like that.

Re: [Dx4win] Deleted Countries

2016-04-30 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Unless I'm missing something, KH5K is still Kingman reef, it's just no
longer a "counter" for DXCC purposes.

Jim,

I just updated my country file using you excellent updater. But, (here
comes my dumb question) nothing changed in my log except I now have
339 checked. When I search for KH5K it still comes up as Kingman Reef,
is this right?

Re: [Dx4win] IO Error 103

2016-03-31 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi Emily,

I did a little quick research and the most common problem seems to be
that something else has the file open. One thing that's commonly
mentioned is anti-virus software, but there could be something else as well.

If you've got anti-virus you might want to temporarily disable that in
case it's keeping the file locked.

Just a wild guess, but one other possibility is that if you're still
running your mail program it might have never completely closed the
file. Try closing that and see if it helps.

The other thing is that this is another case where sometimes a system
reboot might help. If some other process on your system has the file
open, that might prevent you from opening it. A reboot should clear that up.

If that doesn't work, you could try to make a copy of the original file
and see if you can import that. If you can't even copy it, you may
possibly have an issue with the drive, though I wouldn't think that likely.

Let us know what happens, there might be a few other things but what
I've mentioned should be pretty simple to start with.

Dear all, I am merging ADIF files from 3 operators into one DX4WIN file. Every
day or every few days, they send me their latest log. I have done this for the
last special event without any trouble (in Windows 8). This time, it has gone
flawless for 3 weeks, but now I am getting the IO Error 103. Just happened that
I upgraded to Windows 10.
Normally, they send me their ADIF files by email. I just download the files
to my desktop, and leave them there. (Not opened). I do a File Import, File
Import, and choose their specific ADIF file from my desktop. This is when I
get Error 103 this time. If I try to import in the current special event log,
or if I open a brand new DX4WIN file, the same hanging persists. However,
from a new DX4WIN file, I am able to import their old files that is still on m
desktop. Two of the ops sent me their files, and neither can be imported. I
assume the same will happen with op 3. This problem just started last night.
What can I try?? My laptop now has windows 10 (installed during the WPX wknd)
All the previous imports were under windows8. Any setting that I should
change or beware of in Windows 10??At this point I assume it is a Windows 10
issue.
Thanks in advance, Emily Thiel, P43E

Re: [Dx4win] Z68BH Republic of Kosovo

He's operated from there before (I've got a contact from 2013 with him),
but it still hasn't been recognized by the ARRL as a DXCC entity.

Work first, worry later.
