Think about what you just wrote. OK I agree, it's a great idea if you never make mistakes. However, most of us do. DX4Win is an old design where networking was never considered. If networking is required there are plenty of loging programs that do this properly. I do occasionally operate from a second location. I just keep separate logs and merge. Destroyed configuration file. Delete it and restore your settings from the .ini file I hope you created at some point. Regarding skins... don't use them, they are buggy. Regarding Microsoft restarting your computer. If you leave DX4Win running continuously you MUST configure Microsoft Updates to notify only, not do the install automatically. That way you can shut down DX4Win before running the update. It's not a good idea to leave DX4Win running if you don't use a UPS. The fonts are different (Ariel font which I hate), and appear too big. The windows are different sizes and the QSO/log window is much bigger than it was. The LAT/LON is wrong and has defaulted to somewhere else. I can reset some of the parameters and I can get it to connect to the cluster. However, the cluster spots load but all the calls seem to be grayed- out. There are no colors showing stations that I still need and those that I have confirmed etc. I can open the CW keyboard window and it will key my WinKey but the COMM port has to be reset. I cannot change any of the screen fonts and everything looks strange. If I try to see the Country box (showing the bands and modes that I need for the country), I get an error that says: An exception occurred !! Fixed column count must be less than column count and I get a small box with a red X in one corner. I swear that this happens about every 6 months (the fact that DX4WIN seems to go through this process of resetting) since I upgraded to Version 8.5 The two prior times that this has occurred, I could never get it fixed until I downloaded a new copy of DX4Win from the homepage and then it installs OK. This time, I downloaded a new copy and it comes up exactly the same as before.. No change. The present system seems like an artifact when D4W ran from a floppy. If it's not possible, write an ADIF record to a backup. 2. Auto login to the cluster. A minor inconvenience but irritating. 3. Open the callbook on opening D4W. Another irritating minor inconvenience (I don't leave D4W running). 4. XML lookup and the update QSO button active... it would be number one, but it's going to cost me money ;-) 5. The CAT with the 570 is still OK with frequency and mode control all working as it should. But with the TS950SDX DX4Win will not display the band or frequency when the 950 is on 18MHz. It does not matter which VFO it is trying to read, it just sticks at the band selected in PREFERENCES/QSO/default band, in this case 21MHz. I have changed the default band and that makes no difference. If I change the rig to another band the frequency displayed in the QSO window changes, go back to 18MHz and it sticks on the default band. It will change to any other band just not 18MHz. However if I click on a 18MHz spot in the spot window or on the band map it changes to 18MHz. Just won't follow the rig if I change the band on the keyboard. I suspected a problem with the 950 but not so, the rig works perfectly well with all the other logging programs I have on the PC. (N1MM, MixW, WinTest, G4FON Contest and MMTTY). In PREFERENCES/RADIO I have selected TS-850-950, there are ticks in the boxes for default address and baud rate (4800). No ticks in boxes for DTR and RTS. I use a MicroHam KW USB interface. some worked properly with my contest software Without knowing more about the code it might not be quite that simple. The problem is CI-V collision detection as implemented assumes no data loss other than via collision. This assumption can break down in there are hardware issues... If Paul followed the book on CI-V protocol this it might explain the problem. I suspect some programs have added some additional error checking to get around this issue. When things settle down we might get Paul's thoughts on this... but right now I suspect he has his hands full. One thing you might try, Rick, is CI-V commander. You can download it from http://www.dxlabsuite.com/commander/ It has a very handy trace feature as well as being absolutely solid communicating with Icom radios. It's a great troubleshooting tool. You seem to be missing the point Larry. In the case of an electronic gamble as you put it... the M conveys nothing as ALL contacts are uploaded fairly frequently. If you also frequently QSL 100% that would also be the case for postcard gambles. But, in fact, even those who do QSL 100% often do it once or twice a year and most don't QSL 100%. Also, some awards require a card. The M or lack of it should indicate some action should be taken if you are pusuing the confirmation. Setting it to M for an uploaded contact obscures that important information. No one, so far, has proposed any logical reason why there should be an M flag for uploaded Qs. Search for the weird name XYZZY and change it to what you want (in the .DXL file, it said XYZZYce this name, so I changed this to 2000Yce this name). In my case, since 2000 was shorter than XYZZY, I went back into the selection editor and carefully deleted just the last character from 2000Y to get 2000 clicked Update than OK. Under 6.02, I attempted to work-arounds... neither which seem to work: First work-around: telling DX4WIN to use the LPT CW interface for PSK keying. It doesn't work. PSK does not key via the LPT port... although CW still works fine. Second work-around: Re-configure for CW keying via the com port. This allows CW and PSK to work properly, but prevents MMTTY from running. (DX4WIN grabs control of the CW port upon launch, and if you try to subsequently launch MMTTY you get a port conflict error.) Has anyone else encountered these problems? I don't see it's broken now... I've tried it here and it works fine on the COM port... It works fine on the LPT port... The only issue that I've seen raised is if one is using a different radio for digital modes... Otherwise why would you need more than one port to handle PTT. I have a possible workaround that works here Interestingly, the Alt-S works if the focus is on the Main Window... Where the file menu is... If You avoid Alt-S and use the File - Save menu... It seems to save reliably... It might be useful if those who have duplicated the problem could verify if this is the case with their computers also... If this is the case... I would recommend that anyone using XP, Win2000 (not ME) and possibly NT avoid the Alt-B and Alt-S shortcuts until the problem is resolved... Since I noticed that under some conditions they work, and sometimes they fail... Remember... If it fails with Alt-S you lose any changes to the file since the last backup... There are a few outstanding minor bugs with the map... That's one of them... There are a few calculation problems with the Albers Conic... That's why it's greyed... And you know about the county search... And worst of all... Toronto is shown as the Capital of Canada... Much to the dismay of people from Ottawa (the actual capital)... Nothing worth holding up the release of ver 6. I can't speak for Paul, but I suppose he will post the corrected binary when he has it available. I believe the map code is written by a third party... I suppose that's the problem with generating Cabrillo. Contesting logging programs require contant fixes und upgrades to keep up with the contests... Since DX4Win is not intended primarily as a contest logger... Adding Cabrillo would necessitate constant tweaking to get the Cabrillo correct. My findings also... I like DXBase... But it was very slow on my Pentium at the time. It's advantage is it uses the Microsoft Jet DB... But that's it's disadvantage too! Also I find DX4Win more efficient in it's use of screen real-estate. You should have waited a few more weeks. Paul won't release a program until he is sure it is stable... But it's worth the wait. You can log the power in the QSO Notes... In fact, if it's usually the same... Put it in the same place you put the macro for logging the frequency... Logging start-stop seems to still be an issue... I wouldn't mind that capability myself... I would still like a separate boxes for Freq Power Op's name Maybe ver 7... Charges are nominal... Price you pay for ongoing support... I've looked at them all, and still like DX4Win best... Though nothing's perfect... For example, I like some of the features in another program that has very nice support for up to 4 radios... But the demo blew up on me twice... Maybe my fault... But I lost interest! My choice was to assume that the MAX232 chip in the CT-17 was fried (the IC is about the most fragile component in there) and decided to try replacing it. Using de-soldering braid and a 15 watt iron, it is quite easy to remove the old chip. Since I didn't want to risk heat damage to the new the new chip, I installed a chip socket instead, then simply plugged in the new chip. The CT-17 now works like a charm, and the job was much easier than I thought it would be. The replacement for the MAX232CPE chip cost $2.19, and the 16 pin solder-tail sockets sell for 10 cents each (but you have to by 10!) The real eye opener was when I priced all the components in the CT-17, and the total came out around 10 bucks! But then you wouldn't have that nice ICOM stencil on the box! Replacing the chip isn't like building your own interface, but it sure was easy and satisfying. Got my parts from Jameco Electronics. They do have a web-presence and a very nice catalog. Good luck! I'm not so sure that is a good idea Jim. I discovered this problem when going back through my log and found a few QSO's on bizarre frequencies... Sometimes the bobble strikes just as you log the QSO... Tranceive really should be off with DX4WIN... I used CT also... So I just put a reminder in the batch file that started CT... Something like... @ECHO Is the tranceive mode set? @PAUSE It's not a problem with newer rigs... But some of the older ones are a little difficult to switch transceive on and off... It really would be nice if DX4WIN worked like CT, YPLog and Writelog... It's not in Preferences... It's in QS0 - Contest menu on the QSO data window... Not the most intuitive place to put it... But it works fine... Only slight inconvenience is if you add a QSO in manual mode... I believe 46 is correct... Though you can change it... Handy if you have 2 775s ;-) I'd use 9600... But that should not be an issue... 1200 should work fine... Make sure you have the right COM port connected... You are using the correct cable... Not a null modem cable or something... You have power to the CT17... The Com port isn't disabled in the BIOS if it's on the main-board. Try another cable... Another COM port... Try another program such as YPLog which has a very easy to configure interface... And a free demo download. You should also get a copy of C-IV commander available for download elsewhere... If it still doesn't work... Could be anything... Time to scope the TTL interface and see if it's working... Well... First things first... Don't even TRY to transmit unless you can receive... Make sure that your sound card is truly compatible with the SoundBlaster... I had a sound card at one point that worked fine for music and such... But couldn't copy PSK31... It would copy the occasional few letters, but mostly gibberish. I was so disappointed, I wondered why anybody bothered with PSK31... Anyway, switching the sound card solved the problem. That being said, I would expect that if the card wasn't compatible, MMTY wouldn't work either... If you have no power out when you key the transmitter, you obviously have no audio going to the transmitter. Do you hear the psk31 being sent? If so... Something is amiss in your connections...
