Re: [Elecraft] Current Flow on Copper Strips - a Question
I go for the Polyphaser approach. I have used and installed their PEEP system on multiple sites here in Thailand. High exposed sites with a lot of lightning. Notable over the 20 years since the first one was installed there is significantly higher equipment reliability of equipment at those sites and none of what were historically regarded as "typical regular failures". The PEEP system tries to keep any surge energy outside the building. I'm a firm believer in not letting it inside any more than is absolutely unavoidable. In a lot of cases once it gets in the building it is highly unpredictable. Think 4 inch hole burned in pcb back plane, steel rack cabinet door and vapourised wall mounted fire bell. The whole sites have very good protection systems designed primarily around FAA-019E standard, though I would agree with Polyphaser that some of what is contained in that standard is not always ideal. A lot of historical convention gets passed on unquestioned into some of these standards over the years it would seem. Re: [Elecraft] Second speaker just turns off K3S
Just a thought. I struggled with the speaker issue with the USB connection to my PC. Turns out my PC recognizes the KS3 as another input and creates all kinds of havoc causing inability to control the volume, etc. I looked at the speakers and then at the audio mixer and noted the WIN 10 OS was seeing the USB connection and was adding the computer audio to the equation. I opened the mixer on the lower speaker taskbar icon, right clicked, and then muted the microphone (USB Audio CODEC0 and problem solved. This was really a challenge for a bit. I generally don't have the USB output from the K3S plugged in to avoid some other issues, so memory served me correctly. I have a separate set of speakers for the PC and another for the K3S, that IS THE PROBLEM for me. If you don't use this set up, no issue. But IF you use the PC and the Radio, you will get into a mess with separate speaker systems. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 168, Issue 30: current flow on copper strips
My thinking is the current density is uniform in the outer surface of a round tube falling according to skin depth at that frequency. At higher frequencies there is no current on the inner surface so whether they touch when squashed is immaterial, no current there anyway. What is relevant is the shape of the magnetic field as the tube is progressively squashed. As it gets flatter the current distribution moves closer and closer to that of a strip. There are no sudden effects. 73 Alan G0HIQ > Message: 3 > Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2018 01:35:36 + > From: "Dauer, Edward"> To: "elecraft@mailman.qth.net" > Subject: [Elecraft] Current Flow on Copper Strips - a Question > Message-ID: > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" > >Since I don't know what precedes the word "thus" in the quotation below I > would ask if someone could explain this phenomenon for me. > > I am trying to visualize this with a thought experiment. Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY
The PTT part of the “PTT KEY” setting can be used to turn ON the transmitter for RTTY (AFSK) and other digital modes. Use either RTS or DTR for this. The KEY portion is used to send CW (Morse code) either with the key input or paddle input. You will need VOX set to ON for this to work. Use which-ever of DTR/RTS you don’t use for PTT. Re: [Elecraft] Second speaker just turns off K3S
I had this issue also but I've not seen it happen since loading beta firmware 5.64 (which has an adjustment to fix this). It's caused by an over-current condition sensed by the K3 when both audio channels are loud enough to cause brief over-current conditions. Good luck! Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 PS Fan
My #52 KPA-1500 power supply is placed front panel down on a small book on the floor rug to protect the protruding LED lights. It is placed about 3.5' away from my left ear with the top of the PS facing away from me. The result is that I can barely hear the PS fans and often forget that the KPA-1500 is running. The amp itself is sitting on top of my Alpha 9500 and is silent. The fans never turn on with my use of the amp. The KPA-1500 PS fans are definitely quieter than my Alpha 9500. I did replace the 9500's external fan to a much quieter one after I bought it 4 years ago. 73 Torrey N9PY -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.netOn Behalf Of alapa...@w2cs.net Sent: April 27, 2018 13:23 To: elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 PS Fan Is there any way to throttle back the power supply fans? Interesting. I have SN107. It was received on April 21st a full 6 days before SN106. Both cross country shipments. My shipping notice from Elecraft was on 19 April and was shipped via USPS Priority mail. Just for comparison I was about 18 hours into the 24 hour "Early Notification" group and purchased online. Same 12:54PM PDT time as Jim. He, I guess was on the phone while I was Online. Not to start the UPS verses USPS war again but am curious if that is the difference. Untried as of today. Re: [Elecraft] Samuel Morse's birthday (Friday, April 27th); good excuse to break out your old hand keys
Ahh yes, if life were fair, it would be the American Vail Code. Unlike Sam, Alfred had access to the family machine shop, was an accomplished machinist, and could build just about anything. He even crafted his code so the most prevalent letters in English have the shortest codes. In the mid 19th century, a wagon train was formed [in St Joseph MO, I think] for the trip to California led by a fellow named Donner. It was a hugely dysfunctional group from the start, a homicide before they left and several more on the way. Unlike the others, they managed to tee off the Paiute Chief near Pyramid Lake in NV, split up amid huge arguments, and, without guides [pissed off Chief, remember] were wiped out in the winter snows crossing the Sierra Nevada. Conversely, the Stephens group, formed up, made good time, followed the advice of the Paiute guides provided by the Chief, and arrived in Sacramento with more people than when they left [several babies born on the way]. They spread out over northern and central California, were instrumental in founding several towns which became cities today, were active in government, and began some of the agricultural industry that marks the Central Valley today. Legend has it that Stevens Creek in San Jose is named for their leader, misspelling his name in the process, although that may be urban legend too. So what is the pass over the Sierra Nevada [originally the Lincoln Hwy, then US40, and now I-80] named for? If life were fair, it would be Stephens Pass with Stephens Lake at it's eastern base, after a truly successful example of the western migration. But life is rarely fair and it's Donner Pass and Donner Lake, named after the dysfunctional party racked by homicides, dumb decisions and, it is alleged, cannibalism, in a futile attempt to survive the winter. Alfred Vail is not alone. 73, Fred ["Skip"] K6DGW Sparks NV DM09dn Washoe County On 4/27/2018 4:55 AM, Chris R. NW6V wrote: Good Idea Wayne! Re: [Elecraft] K3 AR0 & AR1 commands not working
Hi Wayne, Upgrading to the latest 5.64 version of K3 firmware corrected the problem. I can now change the 'RX ANT' by using the AR1 & AR0 commands. When I ran the K3 Utility earlier, and checked for the latest K3 release firmware release, it indicated that 5.57 was the most current version and that is what I had been using in my K3. However, on the 'K3/K3S Software' page it indicated that the latest current revision was 5.62 dated Nov 16, 2017 and not 5.57 that was indicated when I checked with the K3 Utility. Apparently the older 5.57 version which I was using did not have the capability of using AR0 and AR1 commands to control the "RX ANT". With the command working now, I can now remotely switch the K3 receiver between the main and Beverage antennas with my Android smart phone using the . Thanks for your rapid and right on the mark solution to my question. My almost decade old K3 is performing great. Since its introduction back last summer, I've been playing with the new WSJT-X FT8 digital mode. I've been working many grid squares, but my primary focus has been chasing DX. Using the K3, running 75 Watts with an A3S yagi and wire antennas, the K1HTV FT8 DXCC country totals presently stand at 214 worked and 201 confirmed. Re: [Elecraft] Odd problem
Hi Steve, It could be some corrosion on the pins connecting the RF board to the front panel. I had K3 s/n 3505 and it still had the tin pins not the gold ones. When I sent it in for updates before selling it to my brother-in-law they replaced the pins. I had never had any trouble with it. It seems it is standard procedure when an early K3 arrives for updates the tin pins are replaced with gold pins. You can get the gold pins from Elecraft and replace them yourself. Sometimes, just removing the front panel and replacing it wipes the pins enough to eliminate erratic problems. One of the Elecraft techs told me that production with the gold pins started in the s/n range 4000 to 4100. I can't confirm that, but I would take the tech's word for it. Don, W3FPR may be able to verify some of this. 73, Mark, WB9CIF -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.netOn Behalf Of Steve Sent: Friday, April 27, 2018 1:03 AM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Odd problem I have K3 s/n 3400 plus which I’ve owned since. Any ideas? 73 Steve AA4V Sent from my I-Phone __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to markmus...@sbcglobal.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hilarious Fred! That image of a woefully distraught Sam will never leave me :-) 73 Chris NW6V Message: 10 Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2018 21:49:25 -0700 From: Fred JensenTo: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Samuel Morse's birthday (Friday, April 27th); good excuse to break out your old hand keys Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed So where and when might we find you?? Can I still use my keyer?? My hand key looks like a work of art but is so clunky even Alfred would have rejected it.? Sam is reported to have been so distraught that his numerical dictionary was being rejected in favor of "copying by ear" that he took to bed for several months.? Sadly, it wasn't his bed, he was a guest at a friends house.? We do have a guest room, but need advance notice should you plan to become equally distraught.? More than a day or two and we'll have to schedule a trip to Costco. Granddaughter's track meet is canceled on Fri, I will have time. Re: [Elecraft] Samuel Morse's birthday (Friday, April 27th); good excuse to break out your old hand keys
Good Idea Wayne! And I'll remind the assembled masses that the unsung hero in the story of Morse code was a fellow named Alfred Vail - who played Wozniak to Morse's "Steve Jobs." Vail pretty much invented the dash-dot code as we know it, as well as the hand key. But it's Morse's name, as owner of the company that paid for it, on the patents. Sic transit Gloria. Searching archives, I found a note where Morse urged Vail to increase the spacing between the characters he was sending because they were running together. Imagine that! Morse was the first guy ever to complain about somebody's fist! 73 Chris NW6V -- Message: 8 Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2018 20:24:40 -0700 From: Wayne BurdickSubject: Message-ID: <48f17a07-a981-4ced-a8c2-4131bdb53...@elecraft.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 No matter how busy I am tomorrow, I aim to make at least one QSO on this coming Friday in honor of Samuel Morse?s birth (227 years ago!). [Elecraft] re PX3 computer interface to KX3
I had a similar problem last year when setting up my KX3 which came from a silent key with accesory bits missing. I used a an old USB to RS232 adaptor, sourced locally which turned out not to be running at proper RS232 voltage levels but closer to TTL. Different devices are more or less tolerant of variations in voltage levels. Without a ‘scope it is hard to check the voltages, so substituting with another borrowed known good lead might be a good way to go. I am still missing the Morse Key and Hand Microphone which can’t be found :-( John G7LTQ > From: Bill Frantz> Subject: [Elecraft] PX3 computer interface to KX3 > Date: 27 April 2018 at 01:40:53 BST > To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > > I'm sitting in New Hampshire and I find I can't get my computer to talk to > the KX3 when it goes through the PX3 using the ACC1-PC jack.
