This is actually a well known issue
in the Security Community. If you are running OWA on a IIS Server that is on
the same machine as the Exchange Server, IIS runs its own SMTP Relay. This is
very easy to fix. Simply uninstall the SMTP Service on your IIS Box. It is
always good practice to keep Servers that are dedicated to different Services
separate from each other.

I hope this helps,

Seriously, look at the archives of the Sunbelt

find it in the morning, it's 11:20 pm and I'm just finishing a bad evening in

RE: New Virus Alert

2001-09-19 Thread Dahl, Peter

Symantec gives the following synopsis on what the virus does. There are
some more details on the site regarding detection and removal that I did not
copy over so I have provided the link at the beginning.

Peter Dahl.

http:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

W32.Nimda.A@mm is a new mass-mailing worm that utilizes multiple methods to
spread itself. The worm sends itself out by email, searches for open network
shares, attempts to copy itself to unpatched or already vulnerable Microsoft
IIS web servers, and is a virus infecting both local files and files on
remote network shares.

The worm uses the Unicode Web Traversal exploit. A patch and information
regarding this exploit can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms00-078.asp.

When the worm arrives by email, the worm uses a MIME exploit allowing the
virus to be executed just by reading or previewing the file. Information and
a patch for this exploit can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp

Users visiting compromised Web servers will be prompted to download an .eml
(Outlook Express) email file, which contains the worm as an attachment. This
.eml file also uses the aforementioned MIME exploit. Users can disable 'File
Download' in their internet security zones to prevent compromise.

Also, the worm will create open network shares on the infected computer,
allowing access to the system. During this process the worm creates the
guest account with Administrator privileges.

If it's any consolation Lance, it's banging the hell out of me also. Seems
to replicate richad20.dll and *.eml files on servers. I'm talking hundreds
of thousands of the suckers. Worst is, CAI claims the virus pattern files I
updated this morning before the attack takes care of it! Another load of
horse manure form an already suspect company. If anyone knows exactly how
this works, and I mean exactly, I'd sure like to know. Even with all
workstations shut down, it still replicates itself on my PDC as fast as I
can delete the dll and eml files. On infected workstations, repairing the
sys.ini file and deleting load.exe from the \\windows\system directory does
not help. On reboot, the sys.ini is modified again and the load.exe is back
in place. Making the system.ini file read only seems to help. Good luck.
Oh yeah-tried calling Computer Associates tech support for two hours today.
Was kept in a holding pattern for 30 minutes and then disconnected. Nice
people.

I'm about 3/4 through with my first read of Tony's book. I've already got
about 6 legal pad pages of notes (both sides). William[1] reccommended it
and it's well worth the read. While it's not a step by step type of book,
Tony's writing style allows for good comprehension (at least for me) and
I've pulled lots of good info out of it that has already helped me better
understand E2K and the changes from 5.5

Definitely a keeper.

I've read it cover to cover.

Tony's experience with Exchange over all versions gives him a
great viewpoint for commenting on not only what is new in
Exchange, but also how it has changed and developed. The
book covers 5.5 and 2000, but it is not a HowTo book in the
instructional sense. It isn't an administrators guide.

RE: Off topic ... blocking chat programs

2001-09-19 Thread Preston C. Jeffares

Well you almost got it but you have to be a little more tenacious to
really block it effectively. On AIM you have to block every port going
to those addresses. In the AOL IM setup you can change the port number
to 80 for example and connect to the servers. Then you have to take
into account that users can go to http://www.aol.com/aimexpress/
http://www.aol.com/aimexpress/ and use the web client. So, depending
on how strict you get you might have to block access to all of the
www.aol.com http://www.aol.com IP's. So, basically... it's a losing
battle to say the least. I would recommend getting management to do
their job and proactively enforce policies... rather than trying to
block access to the wide gamut of chat clients.

Seriously, look at the archives of the Sunbelt Win-Security list -
there was a list of ports in the W2K newsletter the other week, I've got
a copy but I can't find it right now. I'll see if I can find it in the
morning, it's 11:20 pm and I'm just finishing a bad evening in which I
got nowhere - (put long boring story here)

  Hi guys ,

Slightly off topic , but chose this forum , hoping for an answer.
My question is how do i block chat programs like icq, msn messenger etc
.
I have windows 2000 domain with no proxy server , can i do it using DNS
server ?
so that all these chat programs resolve their respective ip addresses
internally ?

 Thanks
 Irfan

Unable to add from and bcc fields

2001-09-19 Thread Miller Bonnie L.

Outlook 2000, SR-1 installed via AD .msi using custom .mst file created by
me with the Office Reskit (download from MS). (Exchange 5.5 sp3, but
probably irrelevant here).

I recently had to recreate my roaming user profile and now no longer can add
the from and bcc fields to my e-mail messages. Tried both with Word as
e-mail editor and not. If I open an old message and go to the view menu,
I can see the from field and bcc field options, but they are grayed out and
unavailable. If I'm in a new message they are not even on the list (don't
know if they should be there). Am I just looking in the wrong spot to add
this?
I'm domain admin and local admin on my Win2k pro sp2 pc. I need the from
field so I can reply back to someone as our postmaster account instead of me
(I know I can get around this another way in the meantime, but I previously
had the from field). Other users on our network also appear to have the
same problem and some will likely need bcc. Anyone know a reg entry or Q
article that might help? I can't seem to find anything on the MS site or
Google, but I'm probably looking for the wrong thing.

Thanks,
Bonnie M.

2001-09-19 Thread Dahl, Peter

Alternatively, if dynamic menus are not the issue try customizing the menu
to add these fields back.

On a new message select Customize from the Tools menu.
On the Commands tab, select the View category.
Under the Commands, scroll through the list until you see the From and BCC
fields.
Drag these items to the view menu.

Hope that one of these methods resolves your issues!

Is it possible these menu commands are just hidden? Outlook 2000 uses
dynamic menus by default. Try using the keyboard shortcut of ALT V + I and
see if that pops up the From field.

I went into Exchange System Manager and in Internet Message Formats, I
added their domain using the format: @domainname.com and chose Exchange
rich-text format - Never use.

Still, our clients are getting winmail.dat attachments.

OOA's sent to this list

2001-09-19 Thread Michel, David

1. Have you rebooted the Exchange server since sp1?
2. What sp level is Outlook 2K? IIRC, updating it to SR-1a made some
changes in the way it contacted an E2K server (may not be worded correctly,
but I think the concept is correct). Other than that, DNS is what should be

OL2002 and exchange 5.5sp4 on windows 2000 sp2

2001-09-19 Thread Tom Cass

I am beginning to test my deployment of Office XP and have run into problems
with offline folders, and downloading offline address book from exchange.
I get an error massage an error occurred while opening Microsoft exchange
offline address book files on the exchange server, see your administrator

When Synchronizing offline folders I get an error Task Microsoft Exchange
Server reported error (0x80004005): the operation failed

Both of these features work from Outlook 97 clients.

Has anyone else encountered this? There is no evidence of a problem in the

That is correct. The public folder is NOT under All Public Folders. Per
MS, MAPI clients cannot see anything but the All Public Folders. All
other trees can be seen via other clients such as OWA.

Is it just me, or is that all kind of screwed up. How come you can access
the Public Folder from OWA, but not from Outlook? That doesn't make any
sense at all. You say you set up a second Public Folder Tree? You mean one
other than the All Public Folders, or what? Be more specific please.

I haven't tried that because if I did I would only have access to the public

see the default tree. Is anyone else running into this issue when using

Subject: Do not use IIS lockdown tool

Microsoft PSS told me the IIS lockdown tool should not be used on a
Exchagne 2000 Server.

The Exchagne guru at Microsoft looked at what the tool did. He found
that because of Exchange 2000 reliance on IIS 5, the tool distrupts
Exchange.

I asked him if Microsoft are gong to let people know and he said he
would speak to his supervisors about letting people know.

We used the undo feature and the virtual servers reset to an old IP.
Under Exchange System Manager, server, protocols, virtual servers it
still said all the IP were the correct IPs. We went to the IIS metabase
and all the old info had been reset by the IIS lockdown tools, undo
feature.

To my knowledge Microsoft still have not released the info they told me.

MANAGING EXTRA MAILBOXES IN EXCHANGE
From time to time, I want to highlight solutions developers who really
seem to understand what people want from Outlook. One such developer is
Victor Ivanidze, whom I met while I was living in Moscow and whose web
site at http://victori.hypermart.net/ features COM add-ins for Outlook
2000 and 2002, sample forms to add header fields to Internet messages,
and various other tips.
Lately, Victor has focused on one of the stickier issues in Outlook in
an Exchange environment -- working with a secondary mailbox. As you
probably know, with proper permissions, you can open another mailbox and
see all its folders, respond to messages in its Inbox, etc. A typical
example is a Support mailbox that help desk staffers access in addition
to their own mailboxes.
The hard part comes when you want to ensure that messages sent from the
other mailbox have the right From address and are stored in the other
mailbox's Sent Items folder. I wrote an article a few years ago
(http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=4855) on
various ways to meet those goals and concluded that it was easier to
abandon the shared group mailbox approach and use a public folder
instead.
Victor has breathed new life into the group mailbox approach, however,
by offering two COM add-ins that together make it possible to handle a
secondary mailbox's messages seamlessly. RightFrom is a utility that
automatically fills in the correct From address when you reply to or
forward a message in the other mailbox. The second utility, UniSent,
ensures that those replies and forwards are stored in the Sent Items
folder of the other mailbox, not in your own mailbox. It also puts items
that you delete from the group mailbox into the group mailbox's Deleted
Items folder.
Remember that, if you're implementing a group mailbox, there are two
different ways to set permissions to allow other users to send on behalf
of the mailbox. If the Exchange administrator grants Send on Behalf Of
permission to the Support mailbox, outgoing messages will show both the
actual sender and the Support mailbox. If you want to hide the actual
sender's name and address, you need to grant Send As permission to the
user's Windows account.

  You
think? This is SM, we just dropped a new 3com switch in after the old one I
think was having connectivity issues. Not much new over here.. picked up a
couple of nice jobs, one in Canada.. so I may be doing some International work

RE: NAV for Exchange Server not picking up Nimda

2001-09-19 Thread Kevin Miller

Have not a virus problem in years with email. The solution, block all
attachments, minus zip files. Has never failed me.

Subject: NAV for Exchange Server not picking up Nimda

Is anybody having a problem where the Nimda virus isn't being picked up
by the latest definitions from Symantec? I've just tested our server as
our workstations are falling like flies and it's not being detected...
any ideas (i'm on hold to symantec at the moment)... I've disabled IMC
for the time being as it doesn't seem to propigate over Outlook 2000
only outlook express. Mathew
