I cooked for Mai Mai and Dixie using a similar system. However, I
froze the food in muffin pans, popped them out and bagged them. This
gave me a day's meals or a serving at a time. I watch the chickens as
they get near the sale by date. Frequently stores will mark them down
dramatically a day or two before they have to throw them out. I have
been able to get whole fryers at 49 cents a pound and chicken breasts
at 79 cents a pound. The fryers produce lots of broth that I freeze
in the lollipops for Mom's ferals. Nothing is wasted and all I have
to do is put the chicken in a slow cooker. Being vegetarian, I prefer
to cook a lot at once. My cats prefer the chicken in pieces though.
The same could be done with beef or pork. I have added chopped raw
veggies (the ones that are high in vitamin C) to the mixture. I am
blessed with a freezer so I can pick up chicken in quantity when I
find a good buy.

much I am making and I add oatmeal or rice, usually oatmeal. Then
after I debone and blend the cooked oatmeal and egg together with
the chicken, I add the supplements. Taurine, bonemeal, a

needs for his CRF and mix it really well to get it all mixed in.
Forgot I use the chicken broth to blend to the consistency I want.

Then I ladle into freezer safe quart size canning jars and freeze
them to use as needed. Fred did well on it and put on all the

[Felvtalk] Immulin

2009-04-23 Thread nancy denison
I've been using Imulan for Taz for a while. I started her on it when she was
about 6 months old (when I found her). She was very symptomatic whici is why
I took her into the vet. They tested her and she was positive. She had a temp
of 105, wouldn't eat and very lethargic. I took her home and fed her
everything stinky I could think of and started her on Clavamox. She responded
a bit and then I had to go out of town. My vet had researched the Imulan and I
had her buy a 3 pack. she tried it in Tax while I was out of town. I was so
afraid she was going to die while I was gone but when I got back she had pretty
well bounced back to her original goofy self. I kept giving the Imulan once a
week for 6 weeks because her blood count was only creeping up and had a couple
of little set backs. She has continued to do well and I've started her on
every other week shots. So far every other week for 4 shots. She still
continous to improve and has been in the normal range. However, she has been
through 2 heat cycles which the vet says can stress them enough to lower their
blood counts. So I just had her spayed.
Interesting note, she said that with female ferrets that too many heat cycles
without pregnanacy can cause it to actually get so weak it can die.
I'm hoping her blood levels get back up to normal and I can then go to once a
month shots. It's expensive but this little cat has been dealt a crappy hand.
First she was almost eaten up by pitt bulls, then threatened with death at an
animal shelter I took her to so I took her back, and then this disease. So I
have a vested interest in keeping her healthy. She is the best when it comes
to taking her daily meds, Pet-tinic, DMG and Myco-Immune. She'll just open her
mouth and take it.
So if your pocket book can handle it, I would recommend it and try it. Good
luck.

[Felvtalk] Charlotte is going back to the vet tommorrow

2009-04-23 Thread Laura Mostello

Charlotte has an appointment to see Dr. Ray again tomorrow. Her IFA test did
come back positive - so Dr. Ray is not optimistic about the long-term outcome,
especially since she's so young. But we'll see. He mentioned trying Epogen -
anyone have any success with that?
Overall, though, she is doing GREAT! I've been bringing her to work with me (I
work at an animal shelter so it's OK with my boss), and yesterday seemed to be
a real turning point. She ate almost an entire can of Fancy Feast, plus some
chicken and chicken livers that I cooked for her, and I had to feed her more
later and even more this morning. I can feel the weight coming back on; she's
not as bony as she was a week ago. One of my co-workers - just like my mom -
said, Just put her down. But she goes up to everybody (and she doesn't know
these people) and cries until they pick her up and put her on their laps. So
euthanizing her when she's clearly trying so hard and eating so well is not an
option.
I'll let you all know what happens tomorrow. Thanks everyone for being so
supportive.

Re: [Felvtalk] Charlotte is going back to the vet tommorrow

2009-04-23 Thread Southernes
I'm certainly not a vet, so maybe this is overkill, but I'm very cautious
about carrying disease/germs etc. when I come back from the shelter (I
volunteer there) I am afraid, not that I'll infect anyone there, but that my
FeLV+ boy will pick up some germ from there. So I don't take him there and I
literally take off my shoes at the door of my house, and immediately go to
the bathroom and take off all my clothes and take a shower when I come in the
door just in case I have anything on me that he might get. I then spray
down my shoes with lysol before I bring them in. I put the clothes in the
hamper and wash them before I wear them again. I'm a regular volunteer.

I may be carrying it too far but i am scared that I'll bring something home
to either the cat or the dog who has chronic erlichiosis.

This is my introductory note to you guys. I am Judy Eaton and live in Richland,
Oregon, a tiny, remote farming community. I am a lifelong animal lover,
especially of cats, and have owned many. Currently, I have an 11 month old grey
tabby, Wilson Combat, who is fel leuk positive. I found out about the diagnosis
when I had him neutered at 5 months, and last weekend had him checked again,
due to lethargy, no appetite, and third eyelid over one eye. He is still
positive. His blood was checked, and actually his count was pretty good.
However, he still isn't eating, and just moping around.

I have offered him every kitty treat I can think of( cooked chicken, hamburger,
tuna), with no luck. He purrs, and looks good,no vomiting or diarrhea, but the
anorexia has to lead to major weight loss. Do these cats get better and then
worse in cycles? I would suspect that. I am an RN and have had comparable
experiences with people with devastating diagnoses, and guessed that this cat's
case may be similar. I am so sad about all this, and I guess I just need some
support!

We are letting him go outside. He has his own kitty door...We are very
isolated, and my husband and I want him to be as happy as he can be. I know the
risks.

All 15 of my cats came from there, including Charlotte! So if I'm going to
bring anything home I've probably done it already...and we've had outbreaks of
parvo and both feline and canine distemper at work with no problems back at
home. I do take off my shoes before coming into the house and I get a shower as
soon as I get home. I'm really paranoid, too, but I'm careful. Charlotte

Welcome! Glad you are here and sorry for reason. But, it isn't a death
sentence! My FeLv+ cats, Squeaky and Stripes lived to ages 22 and 16.

Re Wilson, it is really important to get him eating asap. Cats, unlike
humans, cannot go long without eating their normal amount of food. They risk
liver failure after 24-48 hours of not eating their normal amount of food.
When this happen, they don't want to eat. Please consider also joining
Feline Assisted Feeding for information about food needs and feeding
options.

For my anorexic cats, vets have suggested canned Fancy Feast, canned
Friskies and chicken baby food (without garlic). A friend with a sanctuary
recommends Whiskas in packets with cheese. Weruva canned Paw Lickin chicken,
Solid Gold canned tuna and canned Petguard Turkey and Barley Lite, human
salmon, human canned mackerel and cooked tilapia have been irresistible for
my cats. They also like Wellness turkey and salmon. Isabella, FeLV+, likes
dry EVO and canned Fancy Feast. My FeLV+ cats have not had eating issues but
other cats with whom I share my home have. Have you tried baking a chicken
thigh (dark meat) or even (gag) Kentucky Fried chicken?

Hi Judy
We all know what a heartbreak a Felv diagnosis is, but as all of us
on this list know, there is always hope.
Have you tried Nutri-cal? Although I have never used it, I have heard
it described as a highly caloric paste
that is used to help cats maintain weight and also to stimulate their
appetite.

I have a 3 year old who was diagnosed when we got her when she was
around a year. She was highly symptomatic
(URI, swollen glands, chronic diarrhea, stomatitis etc) and it took
several months for her to recover, but she has
and she is living an (almost) normal and active life. If you can get
help with his eating issues, there is always hope that
he will recover and begin to feel like a 'normal' kittie. There is
always hope and there are people on this list who have

cats who are living far beyond statistics.

Hoping Wilson Combat can recover.

[Felvtalk] Please add Houdini to the next CLS

2009-04-23 Thread Sharyl

My dear sweet little girl Houdini died today. She was just 10 months old.
Test positive twice but never had any symptoms. For the last couple of days
she meowed when I picked her up. This little girl loved to be held and petted.
Since I have 8 house cats, I thought perhaps a bite or sprain but could find
any evidence of an injury. Yesterday she started breathing kind of heavy so
today we headed to the vet, a 45 minute drive. She stopped meowing a couple of
miles away from the vet's office. I thought she had finally gotten used to the
ride. Didn't know she was dead until I got into the vets office.

I'm still in shock. Bright Eyes had failed over several weeks. I just didn't
think I wouldn't be coming home with her.

She loved to sit on the desk beside the computer while I was on line. When I
sat down on the sofa she immediately got in my lap. She just loved to be
loved. I will sorely miss her. I am just grateful I was able to have her love
for as long as I did. I rescued her and her litter mates from a dumpster site
when she was 4 weeks old. She earned her name because she was the only one of
the 4 that could escape from the crate I had them in.

Please add her to the next CLS.

I'm certainly not a vet, so maybe this is overkill, but I'm very cautious
about carrying disease/germs etc. when I come back from the shelter (I
volunteer there) I am afraid, not that I'll infect anyone there, but that
my
FeLV+ boy will pick up some germ from there. So I don't take him there
and I

literally take off my shoes at the door of my house, and immediately go to
the bathroom and take off all my clothes and take a shower when I come in
the

door just in case I have anything on me that he might get. I then spray
down my shoes with lysol before I bring them in. I put the clothes in the
hamper and wash them before I wear them again. I'm a regular volunteer.

I may be carrying it too far but i am scared that I'll bring something
home

to either the cat or the dog who has chronic erlichiosis.

Welcome! Glad you are here and sorry
for reason. But, it isn't a death
sentence! My FeLv+ cats, Squeaky and Stripes lived to ages
 22 and 16.

Re Wilson, it is really important to get him eating asap.
 Cats, unlike
humans, cannot go long without eating their normal amount
 of food. They risk
liver failure after 24-48 hours of not eating their normal
 amount of food.
When this happen, they don't want to eat. Please consider
 also joining
Feline Assisted Feeding for information about food needs
 and feeding
 options.

For my anorexic cats, vets have suggested canned Fancy
 Feast, canned
Friskies and chicken baby food (without garlic). A friend
 with a sanctuary
recommends Whiskas in packets with cheese. Weruva canned
 Paw Lickin chicken,
Solid Gold canned tuna and canned Petguard Turkey and
 Barley Lite, human
salmon, human canned mackerel and cooked tilapia have been
 irresistible for
my cats. They also like Wellness turkey and salmon.
 Isabella, FeLV+, likes
dry EVO and canned Fancy Feast. My FeLV+ cats have not had
 eating issues but
other cats with whom I share my home have. Have you tried
 baking a chicken
thigh (dark meat) or even (gag) Kentucky Fried chicken?

Re: [Felvtalk] I'm new here...

2009-04-23 Thread Karen Griffith

Jane,

I am in no way connected to Immulan. Personally, I feel there has not been
enough control group research on the product, and not enough availability of
what research there has been. Having said that, I have seen some
improvement of symptoms with it's use in one of my client's cats. (She
decided to give it a try on it's own with a couple of kitties, and also
used it in combination with Transfer Factor Plus, where she found better
results.) I myself have not used it. Will wait until it has been on the
market a bit longer and see if there are side effects, etc.

I am associated with 4- Life Transfer Factor, as I had used it in many
situations, read over 600 research paper on it, and myself ran several
trials where antibiotics and other meds didn't do the job. I found it very
useful in the treatment of URI's, chronic infections, FeLV, non-healing
wounds, EPM, joint-ill in foals, tumor regression, etc. After seeing it's
success in these varying situations, and the amount I was using, I became a
distributor.

As far as feeding the cat with little to no appetite, Nutrical works very
well as a food replacement and is very palatable.

It is foaling season here, so am called out most every night to deliver a
baby (equine), but will set down soon and write what I have found to be
helpful for the FELV kitties.

Re: [Felvtalk] Charlotte is going back to the vet tommorrow

2009-04-23 Thread Belinda Sauro

   Hi Laurie,
I'm not familiar with what is going on with Charlotte, is she anemic
and if so what is her HCT? If she is anemic has she been on doxocycline
for at least 4 weeks? Positive cats commonly get something called
hemobartonella, it is acually recently called something else but it is a
parasite and very hard to get an accurate test for. It causes anemia
and is treated commonly with doxy. Most vets will put a positive kitty
on it if they are anemic just to be on the safe side. I know one person
who had her cat tested 5 times and come up negative and on the 6th test
was positive. Even if she isn't positive the doxy won't hurt her but if
she is positive may save her life.

My Bailey was on epogen when he was anemic, his HCT was at 20% when we
ordered the epogen and down to 18% when we started it. It can take
several weeks for it to kick in and the HCT may continue to go down for
as many as 3 or 4 weeks, Bailey got as low as 15% before his HCT started
going up. In about 6 weeks he as at 40% and on the epogen we maintained
his HCT at 33% to 25%. He was on it for 5 months before he passed of
undiagnosed pancreatic cancer. We found the cancer upon necropsy. I
know many, many CRF kitties who are on epogen and there is an Anemia
list that you many want to look into. Many vet will poopoo epogen for a
positive cat but when the choice is do nothing and the cat WILL die or
try epogen and the cat may live I'll always take the chance, if the cat
is going to die anyway there is nothing to loss and everything to
gain!!! There are other things and some people thing they are better,
aranesp and procrit both help with anemia. Procrit and epogen are
basically the same thing, the aranesp is something new and some say it
has less of a chance of causing an antibody reaction (antibody reaction
means basically that the epogen doesn't work anymore and you are back
where you started), it is estimated between 10 and 30% of cats on epogen
can develope antibodies in 5 or more months. I personally know of
several cats on epogen for much longer with no problems, one cat Jean
Luc was on it for 2 years, he would have been dead long before without
it. He had lymphoma and CRF.

hard-boiled eggs provide the necessary taurine..

and ground chicken/turkey can be used, and you can watch sales for them and
get that quite inexpensively, too. (and those two are good for crf kitties,
which is why i started using it--AND learned that the hard-boiled eggs gave
enough taurine). i add brown rice to stretch the mixture, not because
they need it (obligate carnivores and all that) and rarely add veggies for
the same reason. however, being the silly mom that i am, i usually cook the
rice in chicky broth, and something, okay mostly, add some gravy for flavor.
and vitamins.

[Felvtalk] Wilson and I

2009-04-23 Thread Judy Eaton
Hi,
Thanks for all your comments, especially about feeding. We had guests over for
dinner tonight and I couldn't wait until they left so I could get to my
computer..after I began syringe feeding Wilson. Both of us quit after about 20
ccs of cat food, but I then got on the assisted feeding site and was
encouraged. Wilson actually was swallowing the syringed food rather gratefully,
as long as I didn't push it too fast. My husband helped keep both me and the
cat calm!

So we are starting on a new thing here.

Sympathy to Sharyl on the loss of Houdini...and thanks for the extra emphasis
on the feeding that got me into real action. I am used to dealing with people
who won't eat, not cats, and had no idea that no food for a short time can be
fatal.

Judy and Wilson
