Re: [Flexradio] Question about TX harmonics
Mark, I no longer have your original message, but if the "spur" was 1.2 kHz as I recall, I'm wondering if you have a local AM broadcast station which may have mixed in your final. I have seen sum and difference products from local transmitters mixing in a transmitter result in "spurs". Sometimes it is a matter of running intermod calculations on the local transmitters, identifying what is getting into your PA and then filtering them to prevent further problems. I'm not say its one transmitter, it could be two or more or it may not even be a mixing problem... just a thought outside the box. 73 ES DX, Gary - AB9M On 11/25/2016 11:47 AM, Mark Lunday wrote: > Thanks Patrick. > > It was two stations about 700 miles away in different directions. > > Instead of harmonic, I should have said Spur. Re: [Flexradio] OK, I broke something
Regarding the freeze... its called DPC or Delayed Procedure Call. Most likely one or more sound devices are not set to the same sampling rate as the others. The fix is easy (if its caused by sound devices sampling), just set all the audio devices, including VAC, speakers, audio in, line in, line out, audio out, microphones, etc. to 48000 Hz. If all your devices can't support the 48000 Hz sampling rate, then set them individually to the highest EVEN sub-multiple or multiple (IE. 8000, 16000, 24000, 48000, 96000, etc.) N0 44100 Hz sampling rates, which is the most likely cause of DPCs. 73 ES DX, Gary - AB9M On 3/3/2016 11:16 PM, Mark Lunday wrote: Patrick you are describing my scenario EXACTLY! Re: [Flexradio] Sound card settings?
David, I can only suggest that you try before and after settings of your devices with your favorite latency checker (like http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml ) with both PowerSDR and VAC running. I do not remember where I found the piece which caused the light to come on for me and resulted in a current 203 uSec absolute maximum DPCs for my computer when running PowerSDR 2.3.5, DXLab Suite, N1MM, Chrome, Windows Mail, VAC, etc. The message was that all sound devices needed to be on the same sampling rate (or even multiple) and that Windows sound devices includes both inputs, outputs, hardware, and software. I have my Flex-1500 audio running MME with VAC 1 as input and VAC 2 as output, buffer 2048, sample 48000, latency 120, RX 0, TX 0. Auto enable is checked. Direct IQ; OUTPUT TO VAC is NOT checked for PSK-31 or RTTY Output to VAC IS checked for CWSkimmer. I do not see or notice a difference with Stereo checked. I hope what I provided helps you; I spent a couple years and several hundred dollars, trying to solve hardware and software driver latency problems which did not exist the problem was the audio sampling rate. 73 DX, Gary - AB9M -Original Message- From: David Land Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2014 2:08 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] Sound card settings? Gary, Regarding your email below. This is the first time I've notice that this might be a problem. I knew that all the settings inside PowerSDR should be the same but didn't know about the external sound card settings! I'm running a F3000 so there is no VAC 2. Then on my sound card of the PC, used to do just the normal PC sounds and such I have it set to 24 bit 96000 Hz for playback, I also checked the other set of speakers and the two Line 1 and Line 2 playbacks were all shown as Virtual Audio Cables. Set them all to 24 bit 96000 Hz. Should I also have all the 'Recording' inputs set to that? I show 10 items on that list, mics, lines, and S/PDIF. Re: [Flexradio] Receiving antennas
Dave, I have NOT played with the magnetic loop. I live in a rural subdivision on a one acre lot so I have some room for antennas but little desire for more than a tri-bander (TH-7) at 50 feet, a top loaded HF-2V with 160M-mod kit and seasonally the K9AY loop system. I've had a TH-7 and HF-2V up at this location for over twenty-six years (both replaced with a new version or repaired at least once) and they have taken my DXCC total from 130 or so when we moved here to 347. This location is electrically quiet; for example the 20 meter noise floor near 14070 is -125 dBm at the moment. At times connecting an antenna to the Flex-1500 increases the NF only by 6 dB greater than an when on a dummy load. When I move to town due to age or medical condition, if I can still play radio, I probably will try a magnetic loop, a HEX beam, and another HF-2V if there's room. The one thing I have NOT mentioned and something to consider is the required separation between the TX antenna and the K9AY Loop System I think its 100 feet if you operate QRO, but you should read the documentation to avoid damage to the pre-amp or your receiver. As my FLEX-1500 is operated as receive only and as the sub-receiver of an OMNI-VII and Titan-425 station, I made sure I had more than the minimum distance and put a RF limiter in the RX line. You cannot pass any of the high end frequencies of the PR40. If your transmission BW is 2.5 kHZ, and the low frequency roll off is 200 Hz, the high end frequency to be transmitted is 2700 Hz. My claim is that once you have electronically captured an accurate representation of the op's voice this representation can be electronically manipulated to get the result of any existing mike or mike to come along in the future. This is my use of Swiss Army knife, eq (and or other electronic manipulation) to get whatever characteristic(s) desired. The required mike is one that can accurately capture a representation of the op's voice. Once that is achieved any effect possible to achieve by means of other microphones can be duplicated with electronic processing of the accurate signal from the Hi-Fi mike. Thanks again for the URL to the recorded sounds. That audio clip tends to make my case for me, a good mike, many possible results, a Swiss Army knife of different results available through processing. It seems that this discussion is around user documentation. Lots of hams like documentation with a nice thud factor - the noise it makes when you drop it on a desk. I've seen a suggestion that the user's guide be printed out and then updated. I'm sorry guys, but that's an artifact of the last century and there's no need for it anymore. The binder, index and table of contents may be comfortable to you, but the reality is that an online search has made them obsolete! The Manual rarely exists for rapidly changing products. (Have you used Microsoft Office lately?) There are web site searches where you can find the details you need. There are Quick Start guides that show the major plug things here features. Quick start, use the radio and software, and you'll find out what you need to know pretty quickly. The best documentation that exists for PowerSDR is in the release notes and here, on this list and on Knowledge Base articles on the FlexRadio help site. This is a searchable body of work and, generally, almost anything that you'd want to know is covered here. If it's not, FRS employs a few really good people to fill in the knowledge gaps - which they do, in writing here. Details, like making Ham Radio Deluxe or fldigi, CWSkimmer work are available. If not, ask in this forum and the answer will be preserved here for all. I haven't opened the product manuals a half dozen times since I've owned FlexRadio products - over 3 years. I once heard a wise software developer say that the user interface and direct on-screen feedback to the user is the most important documentation and to beware of software that comes with a thick book. We are, by the definition of ham radio, a technical group. PowerSDR changes quite frequently. We can't expect a re-write of the manual every minor version. That is what release notes are for! RTFRN! Subjectively, I believe that PowerSDR is straightforward and very easy to figure out. Each new feature in each progressive release is identified in the release notes. On-screen features are relatively simple to understand. Information on improving FireWire performance is on this list and on the support site. Then you can select the default PC soundcard in CWGet copy until your heart's content. I know that the extra cable adds a potential for ground loops, but I haven't problems yet. At one time I tried using AudioRepeater that comes with VAC instead of the hardware cable, but the latency was too high. I understand that the latency is a lot less in VAC v4.11, but haven't taken time to try it yet. A couple of comments on those who merely ranted about the philosophy on using a CW copy aid rather than answering your question. I will have been licensed 52 years next month, but never was much of a CW operator. The fact that I passed the 20 wpm code test was more due to luck multiple choice questions than it was due to my copying skills. About 4 years ago, I decided it was high time to start operating CW. (One point that needs to be made is that almost all of my HF operating is chasing DX or contesting.) I got CWGet used it to copy while listening. About 99% of what I copied was with CWGet only about 1% by ear. As time progressed, my copying skill improved my dependence on CWGet lessened. Now, the percentages are nearly reversed -- I copy about 90% by ear only rely on CWGet less than 10% of the time. That, I believe is what you are wanting to achieve by using CWGet. Someone made the comment, CW machines take away the starts and stops and misspacings and plain mistakes of real code. That's what is really on the air in actual QSOs. In conversational CW, that is probably a true statement, but I seldom operate that way. I would say that in contests at least 99.99% of what you hear is machine generated using macros in the contesting software. I know that it is a shortcoming in my CW skills, but I REALLY can't copy some of the stuff that passes for CW when it is sent by hand. The same person also said, ...just listen to real code. I agree wholeheartedly. However, I gathered from your original e-mail that you intended all along to use CWGet to supplement, not replace, copying by ear. As I found out from my own experience, CWGet is an excellent tool for improving your copy skills. I applaud your desire to improve your CW skills. You are where I was 4 years ago. After I started working on CW, I was able to achieve DXCC on CW in about a year, even from my little pistol station.
