Re: [Flexradio] Question about TX harmonics

2016-11-25 Thread GARY HUBER
Mark, I no longer have your original message, but if the "spur" was 1.2
kHz as I recall, I'm wondering if you have a local AM broadcast station
which may have mixed in your final. I have seen sum and difference
products from local transmitters mixing in a transmitter result in
"spurs". Sometimes it is a matter of running intermod calculations on
the local transmitters, identifying what is getting into your PA and
then filtering them to prevent further problems. I'm not say its one
transmitter, it could be two or more or it may not even be a mixing
problem... just a thought outside the box.

Re: [Flexradio] OK, I broke something

2016-03-04 Thread Gary Huber
Regarding the freeze... its called DPC or Delayed Procedure Call. Most
likely one or more sound devices are not set to the same sampling rate
as the others. The fix is easy (if its caused by sound devices
sampling), just set all the audio devices, including VAC, speakers,
audio in, line in, line out, audio out, microphones, etc. to 48000 Hz.
If all your devices can't support the 48000 Hz sampling rate, then set
them individually to the highest EVEN sub-multiple or multiple (IE.
8000, 16000, 24000, 48000, 96000, etc.) N0 44100 Hz sampling rates,
which is the most likely cause of DPCs.

Mark, my 5K is on a 3 year old tower 'puter I custom built for SDR use.
It can keep up with the radio while simultaneously doing one or two software
installs with one or more anti-malware scans plus me surfing the web doing
searches but... Every once in a while at random when doing nothing but the
radio in receive mode with me not touching a thing the
2.7.2 session freezes. Click stop and start and all is good for several
seconds to months. I can't reproduce the problem at will and can't
correlate the problem to any settings or actions but since on average it
only happens at long intervals (months) I just click stop/start and try not
to worry about it. Later when I try to set up for remote ops this could be a
real problem as I didn't want to have to run something like Team Viewer so
as to be able to do the stop/start routine. Meanwhile, when siting at the
radio I can "burp" it and be back running in a second or two.

Good luck to you. If you figure it out or get any good suggestions from
other sources than here please share them here.

Re: [Flexradio] Sound card settings?

2014-05-31 Thread GARY HUBER
David, I can only suggest that you try before and after settings of your
devices with your favorite latency checker (like
http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml ) with both PowerSDR and VAC
running. I do not remember where I found the piece which caused the light to
come on for me and resulted in a current 203 uSec absolute maximum DPCs for
my computer when running PowerSDR 2.3.5, DXLab Suite, N1MM, Chrome, Windows
Mail, VAC, etc. The message was that all sound devices needed to be on the
same sampling rate (or even multiple) and that Windows sound devices
includes both inputs, outputs, hardware, and software.

I have my Flex-1500 audio running MME with VAC 1 as input and VAC 2 as
output, buffer 2048, sample 48000, latency 120, RX 0, TX 0. Auto enable is
checked. Direct IQ; OUTPUT TO VAC is NOT checked for PSK-31 or RTTY
Output to VAC IS checked for CWSkimmer. I do not see or notice a difference
with Stereo checked.

I hope what I provided helps you; I spent a couple years and several hundred
dollars, trying to solve hardware and software driver latency problems which
did not exist the problem was the audio sampling rate.

Subject: [Flexradio] Sound card settings?

Gary,
Regarding your email below. This is the first time I've notice that this
might be a problem. I knew that all the settings inside PowerSDR should be
the same but didn't know about the external sound card settings! So now I
double checked, in 'setup' I have 'Audio' 'Primary' set to Buffer of 2048
and Sample rate of 96000. In VAC 1 I have the same but 'stereo' is not
clicked. Should it be? I'm running a F3000 so there is no VAC 2.

Then on my sound card of the PC, used to do just the normal PC sounds and
such I have it set to 24 bit 96000 Hz for playback, I also checked the
other set of speakers and the two Line 1 and Line 2 playbacks were all
shown as Virtual Audio Cables. Set them all to 24 bit 96000 Hz. Should I
also have all the 'Recording' inputs set to that? I show 10 items on that
list, mics, lines, and S/PDIF.
Thanks 73,

Another thing to check / verify; make sure all audio devices are running the
same sampling rate and depth i.e 2 channel, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz.
Mismatches with VAC and sound cards WILL cause significant DPCs (Delayed

shouldn't - mainly into the PC. Lots of re-routing of cables and
installation of ferrite clamps solved it. Can't help physically I'm afraid

The systems keeps locking up, on two different Intel virgin systems, both

Need to get with a working system, and isolate the problem.

Re: [Flexradio] Smart SDR s/w?

2014-05-12 Thread GARY HUBER
David, the subject of annual charge for the software for the 6xxx series
radios crossed my mind too. While an annual fee to make the high-end radio
work might not be a deal breaker for those who buy the top of the line FLEX
radio, I can see a possible challenge for/from those who buy the the sub-$3k
6300. I would want that question answered before I bought or ordered a

I currently run a FLEX-1500 as a sub-receiver of my Ten-Tec OMN-VII and

So, now that the new 6300 model is out it's got my attention. The hardware

time? Does it have all the features of the latest version PowerSDR software
I'm using now with my FLEX3000? Are upgrades free or is there some kind of
annual charge for the s/w?
I looked around on the flex website for answers to these questions but

Noise is probably from the power supply driving the LEDs... other LCD

I use a TimeWave ANC-4 to knock down the local (shack) electrical noise when

Hello to all,
It was not that long ago when we all had complaints from neighbors about us
interfering with their equipment. lol Now here it is reversed and perhaps
some of you have the same problem. My monitor for the radio is totally
wiping out my 2 meter transmitter radio ( I do mean this monitor) and I mean
to the point where the noise eliminates whomever I am listening to.
I could understand if it was a Plasma monitor (they are the worse noise
machines on the planet) but this is a led monitor. Now, I admit that this
monitor is a 29 inch TV that accepts input for the computer HDMI. I have
put on all the Terroids and ferrite beads I can fit and still it does not
help.

Has anyone had this problem using a strictly computer monitor??
Thanks Bill the Bull Love it.

As for those folks with NR problems. I do not know. Mine works Great. I
use the Flex 3000

Ok talk to you soon

Re: [Flexradio] Receiving antennas

2013-12-21 Thread GARY HUBER

Dave,

I have NOT played with the magnetic loop. I live in a rural subdivision on
a one acre lot so I have some room for antennas but little desire for more
than a tri-bander (TH-7) at 50 feet, a top loaded HF-2V with 160M-mod kit
and seasonally the K9AY loop system. I've had a TH-7 and HF-2V up at this
location for over twenty-six years (both replaced with a new version or
repaired at least once) and they have taken my DXCC total from 130 or so
when we moved here to 347. This location is electrically quiet; for example
the 20 meter noise floor near 14070 is -125 dBm at the moment. At times
connecting an antenna to the Flex-1500 increases the NF only by 6 dB greater
than an when on a dummy load.

When I move to town due to age or medical condition, if I can still play
radio, I probably will try a magnetic loop, a HEX beam, and another HF-2V if
there's room. The one thing I have NOT mentioned and something to consider
is the required separation between the TX antenna and the K9AY Loop
System I think its 100 feet if you operate QRO, but you should read the
documentation to avoid damage to the pre-amp or your receiver. As my
FLEX-1500 is operated as receive only and as the sub-receiver of an OMNI-VII
and Titan-425 station, I made sure I had more than the minimum distance and
put a RF limiter in the RX line. YMMV...

You cannot pass any of the high end frequencies of the PR40. If your
transmission BW is 2.5 kHZ, and the low frequency roll off is 200 Hz, the
high end frequency to be transmitted is 2700 Hz. Everything from 3000 Hz to
16000 Hz is left in the mic cable. Still it’s a nice microphone if you

I personally have a PR40 for my Flex5K. I was instructed to use the TX EQ
and compander to tailor the audio on the 5K. I have been told that my audio
was distorted with the TX EQ and compander. The audio on the PR40 seems very
pleasant without adding any external tailoring, as I have been told by
friends in my local roundtable weekly ragchew.

I purchased the PR40 to help reduce my RF ingress issues with my 5K. It did
help, but I have been also told that the audio in my 5K is the same with my
expensive PR40 than a mainstream Yaesu microphone that I was using before
purchasing the PR40.

Yes, the Heil PR40 looks nice, it has great specifications, but I would
challenge people to put on different microphones, (if you have access to
them) and compare the audio between the microphones. You might just save

available mikes (your Swiss Army knife approach, I think) with or without
different down stream eq's. My claim is that once you have electronically
captured an accurate representation of the op's voice this representation
can be electronically manipulated to get the result of any existing mike or
mike to come along in the future. This is my use of Swiss Army knife, eq
(and or other electronic manipulation) to get whatever characteristic(s)

representation of the op's voice. Once that is achieved any effect possible
to achieve by means of other microphones can be duplicated with electronic
processing of the accurate signal from the Hi-Fi mike.

Thanks again for the URL to the recorded sounds. That audio clip tends to
make my case for me, a good mike, many possible results, a Swiss Army knife
of different results available through processing.
The Heil PR 40 may not be the highest of Hi-Fi mikes but it is sufficient
for my purposes and apparently for a bunch of Flexers. Maybe not perfect,
but good enough.

I hope to catch your melodious tones on the HF bands.

I just ran CQWW and I know that if I had not used the HC5 element (really
sharp and annoying) there are many stations that would have not copied me.

I also can honestly say that those that were using a DX like shaping, I

There is no 1 perfect element (just like a swiss army knife). You need
different 'shapes' for different tasks.

Listen to this about the HC6. Pay attention to how each of his shapes

I recorded all of my 1600 QSO's from CQWW. I will try to find some great

When I do, I will share them.

There are a number of categories of documentation. It seems that this
discussion is around user documentation.

Lots of hams like documentation with a nice thud factor - the noise it
makes when you drop it on a desk. I've seen a suggestion that the user's
guide be printed out and then updated. I'm sorry guys, but that's an
artifact of the last century and there's no need for it anymore. The
binder, index and table of contents may be comfortable to you, but the
reality is that an online search has made them obsolete!

The Manual rarely exists for rapidly changing products. (Have you used
Microsoft Office lately?) There are web site searches where you can find
the details you need. There are Quick Start guides that show the major
plug things here features. Quick start, use the radio and software, and
you'll find out what you need to know pretty quickly.

The best documentation that exists for PowerSDR is in the release notes and
here, on this list and on Knowledge Base articles on the FlexRadio help
site. This is a searchable body of work and, generally, almost anything
that you'd want to know is covered here. If it's not, FRS employs a few
really good people to fill in the knowledge gaps - which they do, in
writing here. Details, like making Ham Radio Deluxe or fldigi, CWSkimmer
work are available. If not, ask in this forum and the answer will be
preserved here for all.

I haven't opened the product manuals a half dozen times since I've owned
FlexRadio products - over 3 years.

I once heard a wise software developer say that the user interface and
direct on-screen feedback to the user is the most important documentation
and to beware of software that comes with a thick book.

We are, by the definition of ham radio, a technical group. PowerSDR changes
quite frequently. We can't expect a re-write of the manual every minor
version. That is what release notes are for! RTFRN!

Subjectively, I believe that PowerSDR is straightforward and very easy to
figure out. Each new feature in each progressive release is identified in
the release notes. On-screen features are relatively simple to understand.
Information on improving FireWire performance is on this list and on the
support site.

Learn to use general searches, smart searches and site searches. This will
save you time, get you up to date information and save room on your desk or
bookshelf.

And, more importantly, let FlexRadio Systems do what they do best - deliver
spectacular, leading edge products that provide a platform for use to use
in our hobby in a manner that is Flexible. Who needs everything in one
book? We have this list and the support site!

Now, we need an agreement that Tim and Dudley will never ride in the same
car together...

Bill,

I too use CWGet to reinforce my copy here is the way I have it set up.

The key to my setup is that I am using my PC speakers to listen to my
FLEX-5000A. I simply plug a cable between the PWR SPKR OUT jack on the
radio the Line/Mic In jack on the PC. Then you can select the default PC
soundcard in CWGet copy until your heart's content. I know that the extra
cable adds a potential for ground loops, but I haven't problems yet. At one
time I tried using AudioRepeater that comes with VAC instead of the hardware
cable, but the latency was too high. I understand that the latency is a lot
less in VAC v4.11, but haven't taken time to try it yet.

A couple of comments on those who merely ranted about the philosophy on
using a CW copy aid rather than answering your question.

I will have been licensed 52 years next month, but never was much of a CW
operator. The fact that I passed the 20 wpm code test was more due to luck
multiple choice questions than it was due to my copying skills. About 4
years ago, I decided it was high time to start operating CW. (One point
that needs to be made is that almost all of my HF operating is chasing DX or
contesting.) I got CWGet used it to copy while listening. About 99% of
what I copied was with CWGet only about 1% by ear. As time progressed, my
copying skill improved my dependence on CWGet lessened. Now, the
percentages are nearly reversed -- I copy about 90% by ear only rely on
CWGet less than 10% of the time. That, I believe is what you are wanting to
achieve by using CWGet.

Someone made the comment, CW machines take away the starts and stops and
misspacings and plain mistakes of real code. That's what is really on the
air in actual QSOs. In conversational CW, that is probably a true
statement, but I seldom operate that way. I would say that in contests at
least 99.99% of what you hear is machine generated using macros in the
contesting software. I know that it is a shortcoming in my CW skills, but I
REALLY can't copy some of the stuff that passes for CW when it is sent by
hand.

The same person also said, ...just listen to real code. I agree
wholeheartedly. However, I gathered from your original e-mail that you
intended all along to use CWGet to supplement, not replace, copying by ear.
As I found out from my own experience, CWGet is an excellent tool for
improving your copy skills.

I applaud your desire to improve your CW skills. You are where I was 4
years ago. After I started working on CW, I was able to achieve DXCC on CW
in about a year, even from my little pistol station. If you had told me
back then that today my favorite contest mode would be CW, I would have
thought you were crazy, but you would have been right.

Subject: [dxlab] CW Skimmer interoperation

Joe W4TV has contributed Enabling Commander to interoperate with the
PowerSDR-IF Panadaptor and CW Skimmer, which enables the simultaneous use
of an IF panadaptor and CW Skimmer without using a port splitter. It's
available via

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/PowerSDRIFSkimmerCommander

Gary AB9M has updated his Enabling Commander to interoperate with PowerSDR,
N1MM, and CW Skimmer using DDUtil article in

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/DDUtilPowerSDRN1MMSkimmerCommander

Gary's article holds the Getting Started with DXLab title for most COM
ports used; Steve K5FR, author of DDUtil, gets some of the credit for
this...

[Flexradio] Direct Conversion White Paper

2012-02-29 Thread GARY HUBER

After reading through the latest White Paper at
http://support.flexradio.com/Downloads.aspx?fr=1 and setting the AGC-T of my
FLEX-1500 at the noise threshold or slightly below it and with the AGC in Fast
are there any other settings that can be changed to improve the readability of
a signal which is “in the noise” when the noise floor is at –115 dBm and
external noise has been reduced through antenna selection or noise cancellation
(180 degree reversal).

Are there any recommendations for changes on the DSP; Options, Image Rejection.
or AGC/ALC tab or the Audio; Primary tab to improve the received audio?

The computer running PSDR is an AMD Phenom II 970 Quad-Core running at 3.5 GHz
with 8 GB RAM and with a Sound Blaster audio adapter.

[Flexradio] Console size change in PSDR v2.2/2.3 ???

2011-10-06 Thread CSM(r) Gary Huber
The screen resolution settings of 1680 X 1050 and 125% text size which works
with PSDR v2.1RC1 Console Skins will not work with PSDR v2.2 and later.

I understand the “fix” is to reset the text size back to 100%, but am reluctant
to change the display for all other applications on my computer just to make
one application work. Still its hard for me to understand why an application
which was displayed properly previously no longer does so after a “upgrade”.

Whatever was changed seems to be universal in that choosing a custom skin
doesn’t solve the problem nor does attempting to resize the console. Is there a
variable in PSDR v2.3 that can be reset which will allow a 125% text size
screen to support the console?

Thus far my only resolution has been to uninstall V2.2 – V2.3 and repair the
previously working v2.1RC1.
