Re: [gentoo-user] Stream Audio to RasPi on LAN
I personally have this setup running on Windows on my home network. XBMC has uPNP built in which allows streaming to or from my home theater setup from either my Android phone or another uPNP machine on my network. It's by far yhe easiest solution I could come up with. Even lets me stream 1080p movies. I'm sure a similar setup could be achieved with the linux version of XBMC. The command I issue is: emerge gentoo-sources and the output of the command is this: http://bpaste.net/raw/66293/ The only thing I can really read from the error message is that it runs out of ram. This surprises me because all it is really doing is moving the kernel sources into place? I asked around in #gentoo on irc.freenode.netand someone adviced me to turn of MAKEOPTS=-j2 and -pipe, but this doesn't fix it. Re: [gentoo-user] [OT] Hardware Problems causing kernel panics during large compiles
Update time. Today, still running on the integrated Radeon HD 3300, I did an upgrade to chromium again. BAM! Kernel panic. Recoverable, but the compilation failed again. So, the NVIDIA 9800GT has been out since my last message and I am apparently getting the kernel panics again. I suppose it was luck that I got through the upgrade last time. So looks like I'll be getting a new motherboard. Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com

Well it worked. I'll get to additional testing later and see if I can come up with a test card for that slot. I suppose I could also move it down a slot. It could be your PCIe slot (or even northbridge) that's failing. I'd suggest finding another PCIe video card and giving it a shot, if the X-with-integrated-video works. If it works with the HD3300, but not with a PCIe graphics card (even an ATI one), I'd suspect your northbridge is messed up, and may have been damaged by the overclocking. -- :wq -- Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com

First, great that it's working, whatever that means exactly. Second, please try to bottom post if you can. Third, if you can relate in just a few words what you actually did to fix the problems so far it may aid people searching in the future. Cheers, Mark Well, it's boiled down to either the motherboard or the graphics card due to the fact that everything compiles properly and there are no blue screens or kernel panics after removing the 9800GT. I'm going to get my hands on an HD 4850 from a buddy of mine and try compiling and playing with that. If it crashes again, it's motherboard. If not, it's probably my card. For normal everyday tasks, I can't lock the thing up. The system even plays WoW on maximum settings, Skyrim on max, Counter-Strike Source on max, 1080p youtube or local videos / movies. Watching the processor temp stays relatively low, the GPU temp stays normal, north bridge temp is good. The kernel panics I get are usually recoverable, I can just F7 back into my desktop and the compile may or may not still be going. If it is, it's usually dead by the third or fourth panic. Memtest86+ ran for 24 hours and found no issues with memory on 18 passes. So, pretty much where I'm at is either processor or RAM. Unless anybody here has a better idea. And how could I test whether it was the processor or RAM without any current replacement parts? What tests usually show one over the other? -- Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com

[gentoo-user] [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
Using either Chromium or Firefox plus google-talkplugin in GMail has an echo when placing a call. Noise cancellation doesn't seem to work at all. There is a setting in GMail for turning Noise Cancellation either on or off, but it doesn't seem to do a darn thing. Anybody else run into this issue? Is there a piece of software I'm missing on my system to enable the cancellation? Thanks! Jason Weisberger -- Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com
Re: [gentoo-user] [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
Any chance your sound card supports looping its output back around as a monitor capture device? I haven't the slightest clue. I have a SB X-Fi Gamer. The other piece of information I forgot to leave out was that I'm using a separate USB microphone, however I figured noise cancellation was done on the ALSA or Pulseaudio level, so which driver(s) are being used for the cards should be irrelevant. However, I could be wrong. -- Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com
[gentoo-user] Re: [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
How are you listening to the audio? Headphones, speakers, telephone? I'm using speakers and an external usb microphone at the moment. As I said, this same setup works perfectly in Windows 7. I'm sure that if I were to connect a headset the issue would go away, but that still doesn't explain the problem. I have also tried the home phone thing, and while i think it's neat, I find it a bit pointless for me, I'm using Google Talk to save minutes on my cell phone plan.
[gentoo-user] Re: [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
Can you hear yourself through the speakers when talking into the microphone? If yes, that means you need to disable the loopback in alsamixer. Noise cancellation doesn't seem to work at all. Noise cancellation doesn't have anything to do with that. You're thinking of echo cancellation. I'm sorry you are correct, I meant to say echo cancellation as in the subject. I cannot hear myself, the person on the other end can hear themselves.
[gentoo-user] Re: [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
Another option is to use a small USB sound device. My headphones came with one, for example. They can be really nice for reducing electrical noise in the capture channel, too. They also occasionally crop up where you might not expect them. I picked up an HP 'travel' USB hub some time back, and was surprised to discover it had a built-in NIC, mic input and stereo out. Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but those usually have built in echo cancellation. Most usb speaker/mic combos do. I believe I'm relying on software in my case.
Re: [gentoo-user] Re: [OT] GMail calling has an echo in Linux, but not Windows
Still looks like loopback is active. Try to find a slider called Capture in alsamixer and mute it. There might also be a setting called input which can be set to i2c, i2s, mix, etc. Play with these. I had the same problem with a Soundblaster Live 24-bit, and the problem was that it was set mix, which is a setting that allows you to record whatever is currently playing. It's a good thing to have, but as you can imagine, screws with voice communications, because you're recording not only your own voice, but also the voice of the other person and sending it back right to them. It's also possible to set this in KMix, but I don't know if you're using KDE. Trying your suggestion.

My mixer settings for capture on the X-Fi are Master, PCM, Line-in, Mic and S/PDIF-in. Most of them had capture enabled, I disabled all of them. There doesn't appear to be an input setting. Re: [gentoo-user] Gnome 3.2.2 Block
Sorry to answer some of my own questions, but I seem to have resolved the slotting problems with --backtrace=30 Don't know what the hell that option even does, I'll investigate later. Everything is compiling perfectly, albeit without fallback mode. Any ideas for resolving the pygobject:2 introspection block so I can install it? On Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 10:15 PM, Jason Weisberger jbdu...@gmail.com wrote: Ok, worked through some of it, but pretty badly. pygobject:2 needs -introspection to be able to slot :2 and :3 on the same system. Ok done. However gnome 3's fallback mode gnome-applets needs pygobject:2 WITH introspection. Ok fine, I'll build gnome-base/gnome -fallback. Problem badly solved. I've had mine for a while now, so I wouldn't be surprised if 1.5 was the correct voltage for your sticks. Double check the manufacturer's website to be sure. Double check this however, because I know they were working on some JEDEC compliant DDR 3 (standard voltage of 1.5) a while back but I'm not certain if they just decided to throw in the towel on that effort. My system would crash using 1.5 but wouldn't produce any errors on memtest86+. This all just sounds too familiar. I updated my kernel so I had to reboot. I checked the voltages and it appears to be set to 1.5. It was set to auto, when I selected manual, it said 1.5v. I don't know for sure that is what it is when it is running tho. That could just be where it starts when in manual mode. Since it is working now, I set it back to auto. Don't want there to be anything, so I ain't going to start anything either. ;-) According to gkrellm, Vcore1 is 1.39. Vcore2 is 1.52. I assume that is Vcore2. I just bought my memory sticks in the past month or so for the last three. The first stick I got was about 2 months ago. Maybe the new ones are improved or something? How long you had yours? Is there some way to check on BIOS settings while booted into Linux? I'm talking about things like timings and such. I have gkrellm set up for some stuff. Just don't see timings and such in there. Just curious tho. Dale :-) :-)

Re: [gentoo-user] Microcode update AMD
As he said in the previous message, there are almost never changelogs for microcode updates. I do, however, have to disagree with *never* disabling microcode updates. If I recall properly, the AMD Phenom II 720 was able to be unlocked to 4 cores via a misconfiguration that enabled it with ACC. AMD later corrected this issue with a microcode update. True, some motherboards worked around that fix a different way, but if you had a first gen board with ACC support you *had* to have the old microcode for it to work. Re: [gentoo-user] Microcode update AMD
The word probably implies that you have no idea what the statistics were on getting a perfectly good core were or why they disabled entire batches of cores based on an error from one. You are just overdriving your point. If he doesn't want to enable updation of microcode, it won't hurt anything. If it was functioning fine before, it will also be fine without an update. There is nothing wrong with keeping the version of code that is stable for you. It isn't stupid, its a good rule of thumb. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Re: [gentoo-user] modem problem : Speedstream vs Zoom
I second that. Gentoo probably isn't working because you have a custom pppoe networking configuration. The others are built with a standard dhcp configuration. I think typically the router would take care of that for you, and all your PC does is get a DHCP address (NAT) from the router and is done with it, at least that's how all the ones I've seen behave (unless you've intentially disabled the router part and are using your PC as the router or are going routerless). Just throwing it out there. :)
Re: [gentoo-user] Somewhat OT. Building a rig. Want to get opinions before spending $$$
Couple of things to note: The geforce 210 is not even powerful enough to do 1080p blueray playback. Might want to consider a minor upgrade if you are going to do anything entertainment-wise on this system. Consider doing the ddr 3 system for longevity. If you do end up getting the ddr 2 motherboard and ram, the AM3 socket 945 x4 will fit in and run with the AM2+ board, however AM3 and ddr3 are the current standards and at least the next generation of amd processors should be backwards compatible with that socket. Also, I do slightly disagree with the previous author recommending an 800 watt psu with the configurations you posted. That wattage should be recommended for a bleeding edge single gpu system and a bleeding edge processor. 500-600 should be enough for your needs as long as it's a quality part. Re: [gentoo-user] Gentoo VMWare image works on Intel but not AMD. Are they not interchangeable?
Daevid, If your Gentoo installation was compiled with march=p4 or the like, your image will not work on an AMD machine. The way to have them interchangeable is to use march=i686 mtune=p4, that way there are no cpu-specific instructions compiled into your binaries. mtune will just adjust the scheduling to fit the pipeline of your most used arch. The one piece of hardware that cannot be virtualized on an x86 machine is unfortunately the cpu, unless of course you're running a new cpu with Intel Virtualization or AMD's Pacifica. Even then, it can't deal with incompatible binaries. You'll not just have to recompile your kernel, but your entire system with the new cflags for it to work interchangeably. The whole point of udev is that this sort of policy is up to you, rather than being chosen by the system using black magic. Look at the manpage for udev and the rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/, and write rules for NAME=sound/dsp0 and NAME=sound/dsp1 which match the cards you want to have those names. Unfortunately, Audacious, my music player of choice, doesn't seem to offer any choice of which dsp to use. Assuming you've emerged audacious-plugins the alsa USE flag, go to Audacious's preferences, Audio, and select ALSA 1.2.2 output plugin instead of OSS Output Plugin, to actually use ALSA natively for it (which lets ALSA do software mixing, among other benefits). Re: [gentoo-user] nv vs nvidia (xorg-7*)
James,NV is an open source driver supporting all NVidia cards, but does not support hardware acceleration. There are numerous and very annoying bugs reported with this driver. NVIDIA is a proprietary driver which supports 2D and 3D hardware acceleration through the GF2 series of cards. This is your best option. NVIDIA-LEGACY is a driver I was not even aware of, but I'm guessing this would support GF1, 256, and TNT cards that have been bumped out of the main driver for space. Both of your cards should use the NVIDIA driver. You can use this flag in your make.conf settings for xorg 7, however it will really not have much affect. You'll need to emerge these seperately as far as I know. # emerge nvidia-glx nvidia-kernelthen go on and emerge your xorg 7. [gentoo-user] GCC 4.1.1 Problems
List, I figure upgrading to GCC 4.1.1 from 3.4.5 wouldn't be such a pain, right? WRONG. So far I've had just about every problem under the sun, mostly in the form of filesize errors which I wouldn't think would be related to GCC, but then again: app-admin/perl-cleaner x11-proto/xextproto x11-proto/xcmiscproto-1.1.2 These packages quit on me after telling me that the reported filesize by the ebuild wasn't equal to the downloaded filesize. This only happened with gcc-config 6 (4.1.1). When I switched back to 3.4.5, emerge -e world was flawless. Very odd. I also had several packages quit on me related to gnome and GTK. Complaints were usually related to GTK being compiled and installed, however would not run. If these are the type of problems we're going to see with 4.1.1, I would have to vote that it stay masked. Testing isn't even the word for this so far. I had to revert back to my 3.4.5 gcc and re-emerge system after having too many errors to warrant continuing. Maybe I'll check back in a while, or if someone has a solution, I'd be more than willing to listen. -- Jason Weisberger [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

List, I suppose that I just found it odd that it popped up after I switched to GCC 4.1.1. Maybe coincidence. I'll delete all my digest files and let them download again, because this is popping up on quite a few packages. Maybe a bad mirror. I will be going on vacation for about a week, and when I get back I'll try to do all this again, hell, maybe even from a fresh install. I hear the benefits are worth it. Re: [gentoo-user] skype experiences: good/bad/etc
I wrote most of that howto on the gentoo wiki, and I have to say that once you set up alsa, oss emulation, and skype correctly, it works like a charm. I even have it redirecting output to another sound card which I have a headset built into. A few things to note:-Because this is an earlier version of the skype base software, a few features are missing and probably will be for some time. This includes video, advanced noise reduction, ability to redirect output to one mixer and input to another, and the list goes on. But for my purposes, it's just fine. -There's a bug that pops up every now and then where Skype won't close your oss sound device after ending a call. The only way I've seen to fix this is to close Skype, restart alsa, then reopen Skype. Large pain in the butt. Apparently Skype has been working furiously on a newer version where alsa support and the like will be built in, but I'm waiting to see that one.--JBDubbs ([EMAIL PROTECTED] )On 3/21/06, THUFIR HAWAT [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Skype and it looks ok.Underfedora it never quite worked right, some sort of incompatability withxmms I suspect.Just sorta soliciting experiences with skype and gentoo :)If I can get it working properly that'd be one less reason to use windows :)-Thufir--gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list -- Jason Weisberger[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [gentoo-user] opengl (?) weirdness in wine
First off, I'm fairly certain that this application doesn't use OpenGL, so that will not be of any concern, however it seems that if you have an ATI card, you'd want to use the proprietary drivers from the ATI website to increase your performance. This would increase your 2D performance as well. I haven't heard about any specific slowness related to ATI cards running 2D applications, so it might be a bug in Wine itself. Please visit the WineHQ.org website and submit a bugzilla report to see what they can come up with. Even if they don't know right away, the problem is noted and they can work on it in the future. Thanks!JBDubbs On 3/2/06, Holly Bostick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Robert Persson schreef: I am finding that with one particular windows application running under wine the graphics are incredibly slow. My question is: Is this something to do with wine that I just have to live with, or could it be connected to other things on my system, such as the xserver?snip The problems are: 1. Typed text gets to the screen pretty slowly - 200 characters per second or so. However pasted text appears more or less instantly. 2. Windows are drawn very slowly - which is pretty annoying because scribe opens and shuts a lot of windows. 3. when scribe starts, a considerable part of the screen (both inside and outside the application windows) ends up covered in black rectangles. These disappear when something is dragged over them or a button underneath them is clicked. 4. There is a slowdown in opengl which persists even when scribe and all wine-related processes have terminated. Before starting scribe glxgears will clock around 960 fps, whereas afterwards it will only clock up 750 fps or so. I am using the following versions of things: x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.99.15-r4 app-emulation/wine-0.9.8-r1 x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.22.5 Robert, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but there's a high chancethat you have just run into one of the reasons that people say the ATI drivers suck.I am also an ATI user, and to be flatly honest, there are some things(effects, usually bad ones) that you *will* get when using an ATI cardunder Wine or Cedega that you *won't* get while using another brand of video card (not even specifically nVidia, but really just any otherbrand with decent drivers). I have several programs that I run underWine/Cedega that behave oddly or run significantly slower than reports of that same program running with nVidia cards. Because the driversreally are not good, and don't do what they are supposed to/expected toin many respects, for one, and because the driver team has not yetreached the point where they're optimizing for speed (they're trying to get the drivers stable first), for another. So if you have another brand of video card available to you, I wouldsuggest you give it a whirl and see if the problem persists. It may not. That said, I suspect you do have an issue with your X server as well... the 6.8.99-blahblahblah series is buggy and unmaintained. I tried itmyself and had even more problems than I did with 6.8.2-r6, which Ireverted to. So the xserver version you're using may well beexcaberating the problems the drivers already have. I am (at this very moment, actually) upgrading to Xorg 7.0, after whichI'm going to enable the r300 drivers (I have a 9800SE), and if thosedon't help, I'm going to see if the fglrx drivers work better under 7.0than under 6.8.2. If not, I'm buying an nVidia card (my birthday iscoming, and I am just sick of this after nearly two years; I've hadenough of the does not work with ATI cards list on the Cedega Release notes). It's an option to take under serious consideration (upgrading to 7.0 andswitching to the open source drivers). I'll keep you posted on myprogress -- meaning, if Wine seems to work better under these conditions. Also consider that Wine is doing a lot of work as they close in on 1.0(which might be as soon as April if the release schedule holds up), andthe devs are specifically working on ATI issues (I lurk on wine-dev, and some of the devs working on wine3d and direct x do have ATI cards). NowI'm sure that scribe doesn't use d3d or OGL (though it might, for all Iknow), but surely any work on the directx backend will have some effect on things like draw speed and rendering. So there's hope from that endas well.In any case, hope this helps to some extent.Holly--gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list-- Jason Weisberger[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [gentoo-user] Re: which video card for dell2005fpw
Michael,Any NVIDIA card is a home run as far as Linux drivers go. It will even allow you to run some advanced graphical applications if you chose. If you're looking for the most for the money, I'd either try a 6600GT or the brand new 7200, which may not be released on the market yet, I'd check on that first. The 6600GT will generally run betweeb 115-130 and the 7200 is priced starting at 99.00. You should note that the 6600GT will have much better performance because of it's fast memory and the fact that it does not use TurboCache. That uses a portion of your system RAM as video memory and really clogs things up. You can go cheaper than the 100 dollar mark, but I really wouldn't recommend it.
