Tuzo Vhod upkaar. I find this song very amusing (but I do not have the full song, only part of it in a dance mix CD). It is Nostalgic and funny. The 'vollar' does not mind girls and young women making fun, chiding him with 'pandu lampiyaum' nick-name, because he says, he gets to feel the 'soft hands of the young damsels' while he squeezes their palms to allow the bangles in!! If we squeezed any girls hand, we might have ended with a hot slap or 'chappal pooja'. Lucky 'voLaar' Pandu!!!. I do not know about the current situation, but our Saraswat brother 'VoLar'(s) used to go from house to house in our villages, particularly Christian houses, sell glass bangles to the women of the entire household and as most women were used to hard work, their palms too were not as soft or delicate and the last resort was to apply soap, so that it will be easier to slip in the glass bangles (any breakage in the process was not charged). I think H. Britton was residing in Vakola, Santacruz, East, Bombay in the late 60s or early 70s. I remember to have heard his 'Bandra festak' LP then. Thanks again. Maurice

[Goanet] Goan Abroad! #8 - Polly'tickle Twitter
GOAN ABROAD! weekly humor [If you joined us late - Langoti Long John Silva is a globe-trotting Goencar, always accompanied by his foul-mouthed parrot Cocky] EPISODE #8: = Polly'tickletwitter! = Whoo...eeeoo! came the soul-stirring howl, gaining in intensity, I'm homesick, dude, I wanna go home, ooh..I wanna go home! It's that time of year. Summer. A bird's homing instincts whine. Cocky, I said, You need a passport! Goa has new regulations! I knooo! she cried, I've been emailing Goa Ministers for help! Nah! I said They need your biometrics and fingerprints here! No bio, not done matric! she smiled, my only prince is you! Quiet! I snapped, First, let's get you a license at City Hall! The municipal office on Duane Street in Astoria was bedlam. I got a ticket and soon faced a pasty, beady-eyed counter-clerk. Move it! she barked, Whaddya want, info, license, divorce?? No need to get snarky! I said. I need a license for Cockayne! Oh yeah! she spat, And surely one for heroin and ganja too? You don't understand, I tried, Cockayne is this bird's name! Yeah right! she snarled back, Seriously whaddya think I am? Cheep! chirped Cocky cutely, Cheep, cheep! The clerk glared. A wit, I see! she spat, Or maybe...a twit!, guffawing loudly. A bandana-clad supervisor came up. Real redneck if I saw one. What's going on honey? he growled, These folks a nuisance? Nah, they want a license for dat bird - say she's goin to Go..aah! Go...aah? She gonna die? Hah! Any case, we don't do birds, only domestic - dogs and cats, and agricultural! And a cow, you ain't! Incredi'bull! spat Cocky Sheesh..dogs and cats..purr'fect! Need a coffee-break from this crap! And she flew up to a straw-ledge. Coffee-break?? gasped Bandana, What kinda coffee up there?? Nest'cafe! screeched Cocky, and almost fell down laughing. The popat always knows. Can't make exceptions! spat Bandana, unless she's under-age! Yah, I'm a...mynah!! cried Cocky, I'll go on his passport, haha! Almost foaming at the mouth, Bandana pulled out a license-form. As he barked the questions, Cocky replied sweetly. Just hysterical. Name!! he snarled, Last name, first and middle! Popat, Cockayne Oliveira, she smiled softly, Cocky to you! Very!! he growled, Mother-tongue?? Languages spoken?? Pidgeon English!! she giggled, And CockneyGoan Kok'nni!! Occupation?? he fumed, as she warbled Polly-Woodle-Doodle. Polly'tics! she gurgled, Im going to visit Goan polly'ticians! Whaaat??? Are they related to you?? he almost exploded. Birds of prey! she burst Pray on Sundays, prey on weekdays! I meant real profession!! he snapped, Or d'ya just lay eggs?? Egg-sackly! she guffawed,Want an egg-sample, hardy haha?! I give up! he cried, What about hobbies? Any special pursuits? I'm very talon'ted! she said I go parrot-gliding, parrot-chuting! The office was in chaos. Clerks were rolling in the aisles, tears of merriment pouring from their eyes. Both security guards held on to each other, red-faced with laughter. All queues had dissolved. As Bandana moved uneasily away, Cocky followed him overhead. What's your problem? he said sarcastically, Having a baby?? No, she smiled most demurely, But its fun.stork'ing you! Aaargh! he snapped to me, I'll let you know in seven days! Ah, that's just a..week excuse! giggled Cocky hysterically. I can't just issue a license to any anonymous bird-brain, much less this excuse of a mockingbird! cried Bandana. One has to have antecedents, be known in society, friends, community, or on the net - even some form of social networking like Facebook! Course I'm in one! cried Cocky Mine's the world's top network! Yeah right! blasted Bandana, And what might that be?? Twitter! screamed Cocky in glee, to general pandemonium. [Goanet] Colva gram sabha presses for modern health centre
Colva gram sabha presses for modern health centre Published on: March 22, 2010 More in: News MARGAO: The Colva gram sabha on Sunday announced the setting up of a five-member committee to convince the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat and the Tourism Minister, Mr Francisco Pacheco to expedite the process of granting a suitable land of at least 600 square meters on the beachside for setting up a ‘modern health centre’ for the village of Colva. The sarpanch, Ms Angela Borges who chaired today’s meeting disclosed the names of those in the committee as Mr Alexandre Fernandes, Mr Jose Fernandes, Mr Jovek Cardozo, Mr Rayon Vaz and Mr Menino Fernandes. Mr Alexander Fernandes, residing on the outskirts of Colva, had set the ball rolling by meeting the NRI commissioner, Mr Eduardo Faleiro, who is also keen to set up such a health centre in Colva with some NRIs willing to fund the same. Another local, Dr Robin D’Costa had also pledged support to such a project. It was also announced that the committee should not waste any more time in getting the government coaxed in granting the land following the fact that the political situation is quite volatile in the state. As a matter of fact, this was very much stressed at the gram sabha even though a lady gram sabha member harped on the point that 600 square meters of land would be a pittance for such a project adding further that the panchayat should think 50 years ahead for such grant projects keeping in mind the parking and other facilities. The gram sabha also deliberated on the allotment of land for the panchayat ghar wherein the sarpanch announced that the file of this project is moving quite speedily and that the panchayat ghar would be a reality. The gram sabha was of the view that the panchayat has done well in taking follow up action regarding the resolutions and proposals adopted at the last gram sabha. Villagers also felt that though four speed breakers have been put up on the main road leading to Margao, there is a need to put speed breakers on the interior roads since it was held that youngsters have a habit of driving or riding too fast nowadays, leading to accidents. The question of maintaining sluice gates near the two main lakes of the village was also discussed at length wherein it was mentioned that the panchayat has not taken enough steps to maintain the sluice gates which result in destroying the paddy fields. The gram sabha also debated on the question of release of dirty water by a star hotel in the paddy fields and occasionally the sewerage stink too is felt at this particular spot. Villagers felt that the panchayat should conduct an inspection to monitor the nuisance and punish the hotel by taking legal action,if found guilty of causing nuisance to the villagers by such acts of omission and commission. There was also a debate on the naming of a interior road wherein a gram sabha member objected to such a proposal and accordingly the gram sabha decided to hold back in naming this interior road. So also some objections were raised regarding a house and a building that is coming up in the jurisdiction of the panchayat on the question of procedures. The gram sabha also debated on the question of a water reservoir and a power sub-station for the village. http://www.navhindtimes.in/news/colva-gram-sabha-presses-modern-health-centre

Oscar, While you and , perhaps many like you in their charitable way of thinking, will laud this first step to bringing medical assurance to the poorer and caught -in -the present economic times folk...a lot of the fat-cat medical insurance companies who have spent perhaps thousands of dollars on their lobbyists to stymie Mr. Obama`s efforts, will find a way to get around the eventual growing of this scheme of things in the future. The spirit of free enterprise and growth of corporate control of vital systems from defence to energy makes richer USA folk nervous of any project that has odour of a socialistic approach that may lead to the rich having to indirectly support the poor... and there is still a lot of that in America. I could be horribly wrong in my thinking and I hope some other netters will offer their opinions on the subject. - Original Message - From: Oscar Lobo oscarlo...@optusnet.com.au To: goa...@goanet.org Cc: bo...@goanet.org Sent: Monday, March 22, 2010 2:07 AM Subject: [Goanet] FW: Nobel prize win 'humbles' Obama. Re: [Goanet] FW: Nobel prize win 'humbles' Obama.
Dear Oscar, Thank you for saying what you have said. And Yes, encouragement does wonders but severe non-constructive criticism dries out the enthusiasm and often works on rebound. I have said many a times that Goans need to get behind just one agenda and push it through. The Agenda that is needed to be pushed in Goa is the 'political sanity' agenda. All else must go to sleep comparatably to this agenda since 'political madness' as it exists in Goa today is like a huge deadweight tied to one's feet and thrown into the sea. If Goans will see better reason to get behind the PPS movement which is underway, Goa's political scenario is bound to change for the better and usher in kudoses to Goans rather than the shame that is howering over their heads. And to ignore this cover of shame that will engulf Goa's posterity, will be criminal negligence on the part of the peers. I must congratulate you for bringing Barrack Obama in the line of vision of Goans. And I will never forget Obama's words as spoken at his Victory Speech Quote $5 and $10 from the multitude of Americans given in good faith towards my election is the result you see today Unquote [not in exact words]. To that effect, my party has the slogan which runs like this: Small money from a lot of people makes better sense that a lot of money from one person Citizens' Initiative - 'People for Political Sanity - People's Power System' must take over as a Maha Pressure Group if Goa will see a sea change in the 2012 elections, which elections are very very very precarious for the health of Goa and Goans. One small note - everyone with their feet in the USA has free access to health CARE, which is different from health INSURANCE. If you don't believe this I'll send you the name/email of my nephew in Texas who, on his FIRST day in the USA collapsed in church (exhaustion from the trip from Goa) - you can ask him what medical response was provided FOR FREE; he never even received a bill. This is Obama's gift to the health insurance industry and has nothing to do with providing health care here in America. Check the stats - on the day the Senate signed this bill health insurance stocks skyrocketed to their highest levels EVER. Politicians will get rich(er) as a result of this boondoggle which, hopefully, will be repealed, and health care for the average American will change only for the worse. Dhin'vastam, Dhanyavad to Dhonyavd.* From my earlier post: dhin'vastam/ dinvas(tam), grateful, appreciative, thankful; Dinvas(i) is the one (upkari) who is thanking/ conveying gratitude, as in Hanv tuzo upkari; tuje upkar mantam. Also: dhi/dhinv, to delight. nourish, satiate. dhin' vastam; dhin, perception. +++ *Dhonyavad from Dhanyavad, dhanyavAda m. praise, thanksgiving, give applause. vad, vAd, vAD, to utter. Dhan means wealth, money, riches, fortune. It appears as a prefix as in, Dhangar (shepherd, Shepherd), Dhandevata (Mammon), dhanko (wealthy, girest Konk), dhandhanya (dhanya = grains, seeds, corn, etc), and Dhanapati (pati / poti = Lord, master, husband, as also leader). Wealth in those days was livestock as well as grains. dhan appears as a prefix in other . Dhonyavad has to have its origin in the dhan/daulat of Dhanapati, the Lord of wealth aka Kubera (God of the Fields). In the Christian sense perhaps the materialistic wealth/ materialistic success, aspect was blunted. I surmise Dhanya was given a connotation (to mean all things coming from a specific bounty/things bountiful/the horn of plenty --- graces, blessings, success, and including to cover all bases, the fount of all our materialistic aspirations) and added vad(a)/ 1. a path, a choice (to move in grace), a way (seeking help), 2. wisdom (ved(a)vada); theory. It is a word that reaffirms one being. Unlike thank you, it configures your relationship in the spiritual sense. To conclude, Dhan(a)pati: pati/poti is ones lord, master, a leader, a husband--not only in the earthly married sense, but one who husbands resources as in a higher power. Dhonya+vad. + In the past we heard women say something on the lines of, Mozo poti ani mozo soglo to. (My Lord and my all). This even when said in English was not meant lightly, and I know one woman who was so exuberant when she said to me pre-marriage what her to-be husband would mean to her. pati (husband), apatitA (to be without husband, be in a state without a husband). venantius j pinto

Hi MD, You mentioned: I have only these couplets. I think this epic is published lately in Marathi in Mumbai. ++ It recently came out. That book, Kristhapurana is put out by Nelson Falcao, SDB; a Salesian. I have my copies in India. One of which I intend to use for a visual books project I have in mind. Directly painting on the text, punching out areas, etc. Anyway. Its about Rs, 1000 I believe. You may contact Nelson at nelson falcao nelfal...@hotmail.com, or try Tej Prasarini. Re: [Goanet] REF: OLD KONKANI RECORS
Hi Eddie, I suspect that with MP3, there will be a quality loss, which would make the copies good enough for amateur listening, but not up to the quality they were originally produced in. That would be sad. And I think the appeal of Konkani music can go far beyond the belongs to Goans logic. Is there gold in our backyard whose true worth we are yet to wake up to? Can the Konkani music of yesterday become the equivalent of Cuban or Balkan music of tomorrow? I do not believe the Taj Mahal belongs to the people of Uttar Pradesh alone, or the pyramids just to Egyptians. Dears, I was holding off comment on this bill until I got to read it. It is a pretty big document (I understand), and I would prefer not to comment on what was eventually agreed upon and passed until I read it. However, after having read Viviana's comment, I thought I'd ask her, what she really meant by 'ACCESS'. It is a specific term and has specific connotations. Allow me first to wish a Very Happy Birthday to all those on the West Coast who are celebrating their birthday today..esp Viviana (:-) The example which Viviana has given, refers to Emergency care - which we all know (I believe) is taken care of. Even the word, emergency care and what is provided .may mean stabilization. BTW: Whenever one looks at health care, One looks in one particular indicator i.e. Infant Mortality Rate. Re: [Goanet] FW: Nobel prize win 'humbles' Obama.
A few minutes ago I had decided that I would really not get into a non Goan issue anymore, and after this post will adhere with my decision. Now, what Ms Coelho says below is correct, and there is more to this which is not worth getting into. Many things happened right from the first week of the presidency. The Pres Obama is a player---a big one. The Nobel prize did not enlighten Obama at all. I doubt whether the NP is a koan to bring about satori. Not one bit. In addition, if this bill had not passed his Presidency was finished. His Presidency would not have recovered. It practically appears to be shredded and more so on account a few things currently in play. I personally do not feel he believed in bipartisanship and that it would work. All this crap about socialism etc., is also nonsense. This does not mean it will not be viewed as socialism; just that work are thrown to elicit responses. The language used in America is very, very complex. Much better to observe from afar, and not get too excited. Much better to read something on Goa and post that. Perhaps he and his advisers simply could not envisage what he was against. Basically, people will get helped on account of the Bill, and many will get screwed, But the players across both parties have done well, and have served the insurance companies admirably so. We like to believe in goodness and should but with eyes wide open. If we did not, things would get really weird. So keep those senses open, and even if someone seems to be doing good by you, do not necessarily accept it at face value unless you are very strong underneath. venantius j pinto Message: 11 Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2010 08:24:32 -0700 (PDT) From: viviana viviana_coe...@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [Goanet] FW: Nobel prize win 'humbles' Obama. [Goanet] Derozio ... early Indo-Anglian poet
I've long wondered about the Indo-Anglian poet Henry Louis Vivian Derozio , one of the first in these parts to use that language. Thanks to initiatives like the Wikipedia, there is today more information available: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Louis_Vivian_Derozio QUOTE Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (18 April 1809 – 26 December 1831) was a fiery Indian teacher and poet. As a lecturer at the Hindu College of Calcutta, he invigorated a large group of students to think independently; this Young Bengal group played a key role in the Bengal renaissance. Derozio was generally considered an Anglo-Indian, being of mixed Portuguese descent, but he was fired by a patriotic spirit for his native Bengal, and considered himself Indian. UNQUOTE It's all the more amazing that he achieved so much while living till just the age of 22! Here's another quote: His father was a mixture of India and Portuguese and his mother was English. The Portuguese family name was originally DeRozario, but was changed by his father. Even though Portugal was a dominant colonial power in the Goa region of southwest India, several persons who shared that ancestry migrated to Calcutta and remain important to this day. http://home.alphalink.com.au/~agilbert/derozi~1.html Other tributes: Derozio still moves city Anglo-Indians http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata-/Derozio-still-moves-city-Anglo-Indians/articleshow/17902015.cms If you look at films like Bow Barracks Forever, you'd realise that a lot of people with typically Goan-sounding names are considered to be Anglo-Indian in parts of eastern India. Was wondering if Derozio had any Goan connection... any ideas? Btw, here's any interesting quote from the history of early colonialism: Father Thomas Stephens, who went to Goa in 1579, was the first Englishman to settle in India, and Anglo-Indian literature began with his letters, of no extrinsic value, to his father, which have been preserved by Purchas. Master Ralph Fitch, merchant of London, travelled in India and the east from 1583 to 1591, and his lively description of his adventures, preserved by Hakluyt and Purchas, was of the utmost value to those who sought to promote an English East India company. http://www.bartleby.com/224/1001.html -- Frederick Noronha Goa,1556 :: Books from Goa :: http://tiny.cc/goa1556
[Goanet] Ref: Old Konkani Records
Hello, Preserving Music can or must be done within Goa or India. Sigrid Pfeffer may have special passion for Konkani we all do the same but I understand that her love of Konkani music is more commercial than just passion for music or listening pleasure. If she just loved to listen to Konkani songs or just air them over German Radio would be understood as pure passion would be appreciated by Goans, however, releasing music CD's with old songs and selling them at £13.99 is a pure indication that Konkani music means business for her in those regions where she wants to introduce or broadcast music. My request to everyone is not to sell your old records to any outsider's with the hopes that Konkani will be kept alive. We must first keep Konkani alive in GOA and then move outside. I strongly feel that people who are outside Goa have more love for Konkani anyways than the new generation within Goa. Please do not misunderstand me, Im not against Sigrid nor about her commercial gains. There are varying degrees of sampling for any process that decide the eventual resemblance to the original. And of course there will be a loss in analogue to digital transformation or even analogue to analogue. That is bound to be with any recording process - so what is your point? What is more important is that these recordings be salvaged and archived in some format. On a related note I have heard time and again that the All India Radio studios at Altinho have vast archives of original Konkani music on LPs that are going to seed due to non-use or misuse. As in any Government institution the process of accessing these archives is tedious. A collaborative effort between Konkani music lovers, AIR and sound recording experts could help salvage these treasures. Cheers! Cecil ===

Viviana, According to the CNN, medical bills are the cause for the majority of bankruptcy cases in the US. And most of these bankrupts HAD medical insurance. Here are some quotes: This year, an estimated 1.5 million Americans will declare bankruptcy. Many people may chalk up that misfortune to overspending or a lavish lifestyle, but a new study suggests that more than 60 percent of people who go bankrupt are actually capsized by medical bills. -snip- They concluded that 62.1 percent of the bankruptcies were medically related because the individuals either had more than $5,000 (or 10 percent of their pretax income) in medical bills, mortgaged their home to pay for medical bills, or lost significant income due to an illness. On average, medically bankrupt families had $17,943 in out-of-pocket expenses, including $26,971 for those who lacked insurance and $17,749 who had insurance at some point. -snip- Overall, three-quarters of the people with a medically-related bankruptcy had health insurance, they say. 'That was actually the predominant problem in patients in our study -- 78 percent of them had health insurance, but many of them were bankrupted anyway because there were gaps in their coverage like co-payments and deductibles and uncovered services,' says Woolhandler. Other people had private insurance but got so sick that they lost their job and lost their insurance. Here is the link to the article: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/06/05/bankruptcy.medical.bills/ This is Obama's gift to the health insurance industry and has nothing to do with providing health care here in America. I see this as a positive outcome as these death panels will result in Govt job creation for US residents. Finally, I must salute Obama for the cherry on this health care cake. Photos: http://bit.ly/aE389O The highly talented Goa Jazz Junction with vocalist Yvonne Gonsalves, pianist Darryl Rodrigues, bass player Collin D’ Cruz, and drummer Lester Godinho complemented the German saxophonist Bernard Schmidt to present Goa’s jazz lovers with some well known and much loved favorites as well as some great Bossa including “The Girl from Ipanema” which Goans have adopted as their own. Yvonne captured the spirit of the songs but infused them with something of her own. Her daughter Sharon enchanted the audience with an impromptu performance and her smoky vocals. Collin’s exquisite guitar work, combined with the smooth, hot jazz of Bernard and the intricate piano work of Darryl helped to make this night in palm studded Benaulim, a magical one. South Goa’s doctor-troubadour Dr. Francisco Colaco was at his best when he showcased his Bossa Nova talent with Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Agua de Beber”. Viktor Hugo Furiani, a visual arts jockey from France enhanced the ambiance of the star lit evening with spectacular visuals projected on a large screen that served as a background for Jazz Function and its cool rhythms. Another pre-dinner treat included a global fusion dance performance by the French dancer Marion Urban who perfected blended various global dance forms with yogic asanas and aided by Viktor Hugo’s funky background visuals gave a fluid, energetic show full of creative floorwork, strength and flexibility. Goans showed their love of music and support for Goa Chitra’s quest to preserve the rich heritage of this much loved state by their enthusiastic support of the membership drive that was launched earlier in the month by the Governor of Goa, His Excellency, Dr. S. S. Siddhu. The night ended with Goa Jazz Junction toasting Victor and Aldina Gomes and Goa Chitra, the repository of Goa’s heritage with the well known song by Ernestine Anderson “What a Difference a Day Makes” to a backdrop of gorgeous visuals of Goa’s spectacular scenery and its beautiful people which convinced the audience that there is no place like Goa! Re: [Goanet] win 'humbles' Obama.
Mervyn - Thank you for your response. I just can't figure out what it has to do with what I wrote? The fact remains that EVERYONE in the States has access to immediate health care, regardless of ability to pay; my nephew is only one example, I know many people who have the benefit of the best medical care in the world and they pay ZERO for it. ZERO ZILCH NADA NIENTE RIEN. So what's the point of putting a bureacracy between people and their physicians if not to get rich from it? Obama is in the pocket of the insurance industry or why would he want to force everyone in the country to buy insurance? Simple, HE AND HIS FRIENDS ARE GOING TO GET RICHER. If you don't believe this I'll send you the name/email of my nephew in Texas who, on his FIRST day in the USA collapsed in church (exhaustion from the trip from Goa) - you can ask him what medical response was provided FOR FREE; he never even received a bill. Check the stats - on the day the Senate signed this bill health insurance stocks skyrocketed to their highest levels EVER. Politicians will get rich(er) as a result of this boondoggle which, hopefully, will be repealed, and health care for the average American will change only for the worse. My in-laws in Texas also expect Obama to create death panels which will decide on who lives and who gets govt medical care. I see this as a positive outcome as these death panels will result in Govt job creation for US residents. Finally, I must salute Obama for the cherry on this health care cake. According to those who passed this law, this health care bill is actually going to save taxpayers money :-) MervynPerhapsitstimetoreturntotheUSLobo __ Yahoo! We should have all the ghatis in Saligao deposit the products of their metabolism every morning at Admin Frederick Noronha's door just as Admin Noronha sits down for breakfast. He, we can be sure, will view these very human urges with relish. I am also curious - what does Admin Noronha do when his bladder calls on him for su-su? Irrigate his own living room with his very human urge? If not, why not? Compassion peacocks like Admin Noronha are hypocrites. It is public space, after all, so it is okay for the ghatis to muck it up. Same thing with Goa. It is no skin off Admin Noronha's back if ghatis defecate all over it. As long as Admin Noronha's house is kept off limits. Or maybe not - we don't know the answer to the question above, as regards Admin Noronha's habits of micturition. Regards, r habits of micturitionh
