[HCDX] Laramie, WY TP DX Report Nov 21

2019-11-21 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
774khz JOUB started producing some audio around 1230UTC. It was enough to
know know they were there and to maybe make out what language it was, but
still kinda noisy and not really able to make out what they were saying

747khz JOIB started producing audio about 1240UTC, but just enough and
mired in noise enough to know I had program audio there but couldn't tell
what it was.

693khz JOAB started producing audio about 1245UTC and there was enough
quality there for at least a brief time to almost tell what they were
saying. WEaker then 774khz JOUB, but less noise and clearer audio. About
1300UTC, 693khz had fair signal and started producing some halfway decent
audio but with splatter from KGGF but JOUB Was soon ravaged away by that
schlop splatter and faded into the ether but came back a few minutes later
with audio but it wasnt very understandable.

It's now 1402UTC and I think mostly anything useful has burned off

As for Nov 20th, nadda... I slept in because I was so tired and didn't get
up till 1530UTC

Re: [HCDX] New 1450 Log From Laramie, WY

2019-12-08 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
What I initially thought while live DXing was KWBE Beatrice, NE turns out
to be KNSI St Cloud, MN.. 685 miles away from my Laramie, Wyoming QTH (I
was able to listen back to the recording and hear the station
frequencies/calls mentioned much clearer) Thats about 250 or so further air
miles then KWBE is and breaks my Graveyard Record by 100+ miles, previously
held by KWHW Altus, OK and KSEL Portales, NM

This was recorded Tuesday December 3rd at 734pm mountain, put on some
headphones and you'll hear, ".. Right here on AM 1450, FM 99.3 KNSI.. we
now return you to regularly scheduled programming"

Here is KZNU's station ID at straight up 7am on Monday October 14th, you'll
what "93.1 FM, 1450 AM, KZNU St George KAZZ Parowan" When listening
live, the Parowan mention was the only thing I heard, but quickly clued me
into the fact this was KZNU.

[HCDX] My FIRST Longwave Broadcast Station Log!

2019-11-19 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
252khz 0040UTC Wed Nov 20 in Laramie, WY
While doing a quick bandscan for beacons, I came across some jazzy
chill-out type music on 252khz. A quick internet search found me the Radio
Algeria Chaine 3 webstream and it appears to be a match.

252khz is pretty weak and static ridden here, but I'm pretty sure on this
one!

[HCDX] AM TP Report Laramie, WY Nov 19

2019-11-19 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
693khz JOAB started producing some understandable audio a poor to weak/fair
signal about 1315UTC. Lasted about 2 minutes before fading into the ether.

774khz JOUB was producing some audio around 1524UTC but was real weak to
begin and mired in splatter schlop. Probably wouldn't have been
understandable even by a native speaker unless they had real good hearing.
774 produced some somewhat useable audio at 1600UTC

I logged Radio Algierienne's "Chaine 3" french language network via the
1,500,000 Day/750,000 Watt Night transmitter on 252khz in Tipaza, Algeria.
I'm in Laramie, Wyoming 5400 miles away from the 252khz transmitter site.
Here's the audio from that logging.

Here's some jazzy chill-out type music from Tue Nov 19th at 636pm mountain

KDDD 800 Dumas, TX will cease the "All Ag All Day" farm format on
Thanksgiving day. The producers of the format had been leasing the signal,
some new owners bought KDDD AM and FM awhile back and want to do something
different with it I assume. (Just heard that announcement over the air in

[HCDX] "QT" 332khz Beacon Thunder Bay, Ontario

2019-11-24 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I don't go hunting specifically for radio navigation beacons but If I'm
bored or think conditions are good, I might tune down that way with my ICOM
IC746Pro and 25 foot long by 10 foot tall magnetic loop antenna. I'm in
Laramie, WY
And Thanks to Christopher Arthur, he's helped me ID a few. About the
farthest away one I've heard is "QT", 332khz, 1000 Watts from Thunder Bay,
Ontario. Actually, the airport is SW of the city limits a bit and the
beacon is a few miles SW of that near whats labeled as a potato farm!
Here's audio of "QT", 332khz. Recorded Mon Nov 18th at 1015pm mountain time
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Vq1fpdWwYqr7HTUvsglZuj-jYCn64hfg/view?usp=sharing
A tip for anyone into beacon hunting... Canadian beacons stick out real
well because there's a real long really deep sounding beep at the end.

[HCDX] KGAB 650 Cheyenne, WY off air or at very very low power

2019-11-24 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I think KGAB 650 Cheyenne WY is off the air. It's been incommunicado aka
missing for the last 2 hours I've been checking for it and with 8.5KW from
only 40 miles away it should be very audible. I've heard nothing but KMTI
Manti, UT owning the channel this afternoon.. which is very very very rare
here in Laramie, WY. Even on the 500 watt directional signal, I should be
able to hear them

[HCDX] VietRadio 1560 KGOW Houston, TX OFF AIR

2019-10-03 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Everyone's favorite ethnic station, Viet Radio 1560 KGOW Bellaire/Houston
is completely off the air due to flooding from Tropical Depression Imelda
that has "Detrimentally affected the transmission equipment"

They are completely off the air instead of using the seperate day or night
site full time like last time when the day site got flooded

This must've just happened a few days ago because I caught them on the air
and put them in my log books about a week ago or so.

I should note, of potential interest... the Viet Radio programming on KGOW
1560 has recently been heard simulcast on KYND 1520 before KGOW went off
the air

[HCDX] 1450 Logging From Laramie, WY

2019-10-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Had two loggings on 1450 within 10 minutes of each other

KVSI 1450 Montpeiler, ID with Hot AC music, signal actually held on for
several minutes, faded out and heard a mention of "The Wave" and 101.7,
their translator. Not a new log, but only the second time heard here They
are listed as country in some databases but aren't. The format change is
recent (300 miles from Montpeiler to Laramie)

KZNU St George, UT. About 30-40 seconds after the KVSI station ID, I heard
several frequencies mentioned along with with the town of "Parowan", which
would make that KAZZ 1400.. which is simulcast on KZNU St George. (St
George to Laramie is 515 miles)

Surprisingly, this doesnt break a graveyard record for me.. the record
belongs to KWHW 1450 Altus, OK at 572 miles. Well, the lower 48 record
anyways. My graveyard record from Alaska is 2500 miles!

[HCDX] DX Tip: KYND 1520 Houston

2020-02-29 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
25KW Daytimer KYND 1520 appears to be on the air at 9pm mountain/10pm
central. I'm in southeast Wyoming and have had something under KOKC
Oklahoma city and in a moment of quiet on KOKC, I heard a 281 area code.
Check a web controlled radio near Houston, it appears KYND is on and
running a promotional loop soliciting for programmers to buy time, using
Bill Turners loop announcement. .even though Bill hasn't been working for
KYND in like.. a year?

[HCDX] XEXX 1420 Tijuana

2020-01-29 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
XEXX-AM 1420 Tijuana was off the air Tuesday January 28th at least part of
the night. I caught them back on the air Wednesday January 29th.. a 6am
mountain check resulted in nothing, but they came back around 7:45am
mountain.

When I heard them they played a dance party rave type tune followed by a
sad, slow piano type tune, followed by some commercials or PSA's then more
music.
XEXX had running the TUDN Sports programming from Univision... I'm pretty
certain I heard that a week or two ago
At 8:45am mountain, a check of an Escondido web SDR reveals some kind of
local talk programming.. they mentioned the "telefono in cabina" number and
talked about Baja California. It also appears to be seperate programming
from XESDD..

1030/1700/620/1420 in the Tijuana area are all owned and/or controlled by
Baja California Governor Jamie Bonilla and often share/simulcast
programming or air the wrong feeds

The station had been operating with 1000 Watts Non Directional 24/7 since
last year after a fire at its transmitter site. Here in Laramie, when they
were at 1000 Watts, I never heard them but they caused a low rumbling het
all night every night.

I DX every night, so I noticed it. well, Tuesday night February 4th the low
rumbling het was gone and i had my first confirmed logging of KCKN

Wednesday night, theres no rumbling het. I checked with an engineer who'd
know stuff and he said stuff has been repaired and back to normal

The signal is at times pretty good here but im North and east of the night
pattern so it it gets very weak noisy and fadey at times. But KMMQ is no

[HCDX] WCNZ 1660/WVOI 1480 Marco Island, FL Off Air After Fire

2020-01-23 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
From Coastal Breeze News On Facebook:

The building housing transmitters for two Marco Island Christian radio
stations burned to the ground Wednesday morning forcing both off the air.
Firemen were called to Curcie Rd between Marco and route 41 at 12:23 am
Wednesday to find the building engulfed. No persons were present when the
fire occurred. Cause of the blaze is not known.

WCNZ AM 1660 and WVOI AM 1480 were using the building at the time of the
blaze. WVOI was Marco’s first station beginning in 1984 as WWWO and
operated with 1,000 watts during daylight hours. Later the station received
permission from the FCC to operate day and night and change call letters to
WMIB. Later in 1993 it became WODX and finally WVOI in 2002. The station
was home to many radio personalities including Joe Klimus, Steve Reynolds,
Paul Lethbridge and Bob Ladd all heard at one time or another on the
morning shows with Klimus and Ladd also broadcasting high school football
and basketball.

WVOI operated from studios at various locations over the years including
South Collier Blvd next to the theater, Manatee Road, Elkcam Circle and rt
41 between Marco and Naples and at Bonita Springs. As of late the station
was operating from studios at Green Bay Wisconsin.

WVOI suffered damage during Hurricane Irma and was operating at 250 watts
when the fire occurred. WCNZ was operating with 10,000 watts daytime and
1,000 watts at night. Both stations were broadcasting programs from the
Relevant Radio Catholic network.

The current owners of both stations, Immaculate Heart Media Inc have not
decided the future of the stations as yet.

Re: [HCDX] KRVN 880 Off/At Low Power

2020-02-05 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
KRVN 880 Lexington, NE will be operating with 5000 Watts Non Directional at
night for awhile instead of the 50KW 4 tower directional. Work was being
done on the KRVN towers, diplexing KUVR 1380 into one of the towers and
hanging a translator antenna when some mis-wiring of electrical work
occurred after tower work was done which caused damage to the equipment
that facilitates the switch between Non Directional days and directional
nights.

KUVR and some sister stations were recently bought by The NRRA. KRVN is
moving from 500W Day at 62 Watts night form it's own tower site (but on an
STA with 30 Watts from it's studio roof) to 320 Watts daytime only from a
KRVN tower. KRVN uses one of it's towers by day, KUVR will use another and
when sunset comes, KUVR will sign off and KRVN will go directional when
this is all fixed. The cost of phasors and all the required equipment for
KUVR to stay on with peanut power at night would be extremely cost
prohibitive as they'd have to continue to use a KRVN tower and KRVN uses
all of them at night

[HCDX] Crawford Broadcasting & The National Anthem

2020-02-17 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The company owns quite a few christian preaching/teaching/music stations
across the country and part of their "God & Country" stance, they play the
national anthem. I've heard it on KLZ 560 at like 5 or 6am and again at
night around 630pm mountain. I've heard it on KBRT around 530pm pacific.
All of the Crawford Broadcasting AM stations seem to play it twice a day
even though they aren't daytimers, don't sign on/off.. and it also doesn't
seem to correlate to power up/down/pattern change time.

I thought this might be useful to some DX'ers who hear the anthem at odd
times.

Here's a list of Crawford Stations that might be useful to someone

[HCDX] KUBC 580 Montrose, CO format change

2020-02-19 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
From radioinsight.com ..

Ahead of its translator K283CZ 104.5 launching, talk is gone at KUBC 580

local morning show remains on KUBC.

Story:

Paul’s note: I hope their audio gets better. Their modulation and audio
quality always seemed a little wimpy. Not horrible but noticeably...
different.

I’ve checked all the stations with formats listed that are even remotely
close to what I heard musically. So if it’s listed with oldies or classic
hits or AC I’m pretty sure I checked it all... and they all had streams

So an SDR wouldn’t tell me anything I don’t already know I don’t think

Re: [HCDX] UN ID'd 1380khz

2020-02-11 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
For the 3rd or 4th time in a week, I've had a mystery classic hits/oldies
station on 1380khz between 6:30 and 7am mountain time here in Laramie,
Wyoming.
This morning Tuesday February 11th about 654am, I had Three Dig Night's
"Shambala". Yesterday, (Mon Feb 10th) I had Dr Hook Medicine Show's "Carry
me, Carrie" about 6:45am and last week one day, I had "Turn Me Loose" by
Loverboy.
The music I had on 1380khz absolutely did not match KRKO, KCII, KCIM, KUVR,
WDLW, WBEL and I couldn't get a stream working for KBWD.. but I don't think
it's them (could be wrong on that one)
It's not KQKD, theyre classic country. Tim Hall wonders if it's one of the
California 1380's having changed formats recently.

[HCDX] UN ID'd 1380khz

2020-02-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
This is getting annoying.. for the last week, I've had a "mystery" station
on 1380khz I've never been able to match to a stream or event a recently
played list.

I ma in Laramie, Wyoming and sometime between 630am and local sunrise or
so, I catch a station playing some oldies/adult contemporary music.

Last week, I heard "Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy

Today I heard "Carrie Me, Carrie".by Dr Hook Medicine Show.

It does NOT and has never matched KRKO, KCIM, or KCII whenever I check
those streams. It isn't CKPC because they're well into sunrise and country
music formatted. It also isn't KQKD because they're country as well.

I feel like I'm missing something even though I've sourced radio-locator.com
and the TopazDesigns AM broadcast search engine.

Any ideas?

2020-02-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Based upon the time, I don't think it's anything too too far east of me. I
think it's West or South... I'd say north, but there's only one 1380 in
Canada and that's Ontario's CKPC.

I wonder if it's a Mexican station?

[HCDX] I came SOO close to logging myself when DXing!

2020-02-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Darnit!!! I am so close to DXin'g myself on Thursday February 13th! I could
hear classic country music on 1350khz, just enough to match it to the
stream of KDIO 1350 Ortonville, MN with 38 Watts at 535 miles (My QTH is
Laramie, WY) but it's not nearly good enough to consider a logging.. Had
some music for several minutes that faded out before I did my talk break
and kinda sorta faded up again after the break is over, with more music

(I'm on KDIO and quite a few other stations overnight 12am to 6am
eastern/11pm to 5am central, etc.. AM's include WTCH 960, WTBC 1230, KGNO
1370 and WFLW 1360)

[HCDX] DX TIP: KCFJ-AM 570 Alturas, CA

2020-02-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The station had apparently at one point run China Radio International and a
website indicates it ran talk programming at some point, which is what
several online directories still list it as. However, I have logged it for
the first time here in Laramie, WY twice in the last week and it's running
none of that

KCFJ is running the Westwood One Radio Network satellite fed "America's
Best Music" format. The best way to describe it is soft adult oldies...some
lighter softer oldies, not adult standards and some newer softer music
along with newer artists doing older music. You'll hear two voices on the
station, a female voice.. that is what comes from the network. She sounds a
bit older and slightly classy and laidback. Often times, the network will
fire their end of the liner but the local liner that should play from the
station doesn't What you will hear sometimes is a male voice that makes
some reference to "reaching out to you" and specifically mentions KCFJ...
or "ever wonder where all the good music has gone you've found KCFJ AM
570".

KCFJ DOES havecommercial breaks and they'll often be a combination of
national/regional/statewide spots with some locals mixed in.. I heard a
spot for True Value of Alturas voiced by an older man.

I worked as program director for a station that ran the same format so I am
familiar with it. The "America's Best Music" format has no DJ's

*I thought this might be useful to someone who may log something and have
no clue what they'r hearing.*

Re: [HCDX] [irca] KKOH 780 Reno Off Air Time This Weekend!

2020-02-15 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Good news... Daniel Appellof, KKOH's engineer has graciously agreed to run
15 to 20 minutes of DX Test material using KKOH's 50KW non directional
daytime facility at 12midnight.. this is to hopefully give eas coast DX'ers
a chance to log this. The 6am test will still run, but it would be
very late for East coast DXers.

[HCDX] KLIV 1590

2020-01-13 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Legendary KLIV 1590 San Jose, CA isn't dead, it looks like it's going to
sputter back to life
KLIV will be getting an STA for 500 Watts from a wire antenna to be located
at 556 N. 16th Street, San Jose.. a residential neighborhood. One end will
be attached to a temporary portable tower, the other end is going to be
attached to a tree. This is to keep the license alive while a sale is in
the works to Pham Radio Communications which also owns KVVN 1430 Santa
Clarita, Ca.

2020-01-02 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, ain’t that interesting. Learfield IMG is running english language UT
Arlington games on Spanish “Radio Luz” 620 KTNO Dallas.

Likely this stems from when 620 was english business news KEXB. That
format was jettisoned, Spanish “Radio Luz” moved from 1440 To 620, and the
call letters Radio Luz from 1440 to 629

1440 became Catholic Relevant Radio KEXB.

2019-12-24 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It would appear at about 5:28am pacific, they play the national anthem
after finishing with the first half hour of a syndicated morning news
magazine show... the anthem is immediately followed by the intro to their
local news program with Kelly Frost.

I thought this might make them easier to log if you need to or help in
figuring out what you logged if you heard this and had no clue since
everyone on 1670 is english, full time or foreign language and you wouldn't
think theyd play this.

[HCDX] KMMJ 750 Grand Island, NE History Question & Answer

2020-03-09 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
KMMJ-AM 750 Grand Island, NE is licensed as “Limited Hours” and I was
curious what exactly this meant. I inquired, a search of FCC
History/Archived Records was made and yielded this answer:

Way back on September 19, 1968, KMMJ was issued a telegram for presunrise
authority to commence operation with its licensed facilities at the local
sunrise time of cochannel station WSB, Atlanta. The authority was
conditioned subject to the outcome of a rulemaking proceeding (Dockets
17562, 18023, and 18036) relating to the “status of Class II stations [here
KMMJ] assigned to US I-A clear channels.”

Ultimately, the Commission settled on a 500 watt limitation on presunrise
operation nationwide. That was less than KMMJ’s regular operating power
(10.5 kW directional away from WSB). It appears too that WSB opposed
letting KMMJ keep the higher power presunrise authority (see paragraphs 31
and 32 at https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-69-844A1.pdf , July
29, 1969).

The solution the staff came up with was to issue the license for KMMJ with
“limited time” of operation. In effect that replaced operation of the 500
watt presunrise limit applicable elsewhere in the country. See the
Memorandum of June 12, 1974:
https://apps2int.fcc.gov/admin/api/download/attachment/25076f9170b21d4a0170bfdedcc90169
..

The changes on the license were included on the next renewal of license
authorization (BR-676, dated May 20, 1977). The changes made KMMJ into a
“Limited Hours” station and specified the on-air times. As a practical
matter, however, KMMJ continued to operate unchanged.(This is the
origin of the comment in the AM Query: LIMITED TIME OPERATION: SEE BR-676,
MAY 20, 1977.) BR-676:
https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/dataentry/api/download/attachment/25076f9170b21d4a0170c009b0480176

KMMJ is still licensed to operate in this manner.

It is likely that there is no other station in the country licensed in
this manner.

[HCDX] Tip: KAFY 1100 Bakersfield, CA

2020-04-15 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
AM DX LOG Before Bed: KAFY 1100 Bakersfield, CA 800 Watts/3 towers, 800
miles. * It’s running what sounds like a Spanish pop format with the slogan
“La Nueva Mega”. It is not running the Spanish oldies format from the La
Favorita Network as Rádio-locator and Wikipedia say it is *

[HCDX] New Log! Talk about right place right time!!

2020-04-17 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Talk about right place right time right circumstances when DXing!!

I was tuned to 880khz this morning at 5:58am mountain in Laramie, WY and
heard some music bubbling under Rodney Zeigler's 50KW Blowtorch, KRVN 880
thats only about 350 miles away. Fast forward to 1 minute into this clip,
listen and hear what I can now positively ID thanks to the other station
running their legal ID at exactly the same time KRVN took 5 seconds to do
it's pattern change.

Who on 1550khz would play a mowtown/soul type song? I just had what sounded

6:09pm mountain or so, and It didn't match KESJ, I don't think... theyre
also classic hits 80s 90s type stuff and I had a Tears For Fears song

I didn't see another obvious match when looking through stations on radio

[HCDX] KHAT 1210 Laramie, WY

2020-04-13 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The station had been off the air since sometime Friday midday and came back
sometime midday Monday.

The station still sounds as garbage-y as ever with a sick transmitter
causing spurs all over the band here.

I'm talking to another broadcast engineer in the area and he has other
duties with his employer (hes not employed by KHAT) and his plan is to
approach KHAT's owner with facts and measurements once he has time to do it.

[HCDX] OT: Anyone in Bellevue, WA?

2020-04-12 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
There's a station NE of Bellevue, KARR 1460 that's transmitting from a
longwire on the roof of a business. I'd be curious to see it.. i've been
using google maps satellite view and the street view. It appears to be in
an industrial/business park area on the roof of an electronics business a
few miles east of the 405/520 intersection. It appears to be viewable from
from publicly accessible areas. It's viewable on google, just not that
great and the sun kind gets in the way a bit.

If someone is in the area and or passing by or wants to pass by and has a
good camera they can take pictures with, I'd be glad to toss you a few
bucks for the trouble.

Email me offlist: walkerbroadcast...@gmail.com

Thanks,

Re: [HCDX] Oldies on 1090?

2020-04-21 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Nigel, ultra 104.9 KJAV is an upbeat ac/hot ac and that sister sledge song
from 1979 fits their “gold” library well

What I heard was The Kingsmen and The Beach Boys.

I was listening when I typed my original email so it was about 6am
mountain, a few minutes before/a few minutes after

There is a 1090 in Sioux center, Iowa but it’s went Spanish recently.. it
had been classic hits which is 70s 80s... doubt they would’ve played these
songs back to back to back even when they were english. I checked my
recording and had the Surfaris after The Beach Boys
