[JAWS-Users] Looking for an accessible VOIP/softphone option for desktop and iOS mobile

2018-06-26 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I know this topic has come up from time to time before, but I was hoping for
a refresher.

I’m in need of a VOIP/softphone solution that will work with desktop and
mobile. In my case, iOS.

I as well as other parties need to be able to make and receive calls, place
people on hold, etc.

I don’t want to get a dedicated phone line per say since I would need to
take and review information over the phone.

I’ve currently got a Skype number that has worked fine for now with one
business of mine, but I have this other endeavor where it would not just be
me who would need to access/be accessible via phone. That and Skype’s
accessibility has been less than inspiring as of late. I’m still on Skype
desktop 7.4 for this purpose. I know there’s also Skype for business, but
from what I’ve read with the experience of others, it too has its issues.

So… can anyone recommend a telephone service/product that can be used in
conjunction from the PC (Jaws user) and an iPhone that meets all of these
requirements?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

2018-06-21 Thread Cristóbal
Yes. This new Windows 10 feature still doesn’t' appear to be accessible with
Jaws. I've also come across some emojis by accident with the alt plus numpad
sequence when I've meant to type something else. Accented vowel, º, ñ for
example. ☺ = alt plus #1. ☻ = alt plus #2. ♥ = alt plus #3 and so on. But
considering that there are tons and tons of emojis and that you can also select
shade of skin color for the more ethno-centric conscious folks, it's still
pretty much a no go.
I want to say that Leacy or however you spell it has some sort of emoji
function if you buy their scripts, but I don't really have a need for leasy
products and am not jonesing enough to emoji my heart out to pay for that
specific feature with their script package.
Especially now that it seems to be built in to Windows 10. I would have to
imagine that it'll soon enough be part of the Jaws core function. This of
course will probably be touted as some major new Jaws feature eating up one of
my SMAs instead of addressing long standing bugs though.
You see? A grumpy or angry face emoji would have been perfect at the end of
that last sentence...

From what my sighted friend says, these are pictures--all kinds of things:
faces, animals, sports stuff, musical instruments--that pop up on the screen
when you press Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. Something
to make people smile, I guess, though some of the faces were crying. Many more
emoji than on her phone, she said. Shrug. Would be nice to have access as
partially sighted JAWS users do. Not complaining. Just sayin'.

Hey.

Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I
haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but
always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking
with my landlady, sometimes a simple emoji is best, as she just wants to go on
and on and on, and I have to indicate I'm listening, somehow. Lol

It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way to
select one to input in your messages and such.

I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's the
right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow key but
not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no colon and
closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they say, bring up
a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. But
if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I tried recognizing
the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found that there is an
add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not having NVDA
installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this since we all send
stuff to sighted friends.

Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no iPhone
yet. So, again, it would be great if JAWS would let me play! LOL.

Just sayin'

Rebecca

[JAWS-Users] Issues with Jaws 2018 losing focus in Firefox 60.x

2018-06-21 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I’ve asked this question before, but am really noticing it more and more
these past few days. Using the latest Firefox 60.X and Jaws 2018, Jaws focus
seems to be going blank every few seconds. It doesn’t’ matter if I’m
actively navigating the page or if it’s just passively there. Jaws will just
say blank and maybe speak the title of the page I’m on, but there’s no
feedback if I arrow around or use the navigation keys. I can get focus back
easy enough by maximizing the window or pressing tab/shift plus tab or alt
plus tab out of the window, but for one thing, it’s annoying as all get out
and it’s occurring so much now, it’s becoming quite disruptive. This has
more or less been there for a while now, but either I’m really just getting
tired of having to deal with it and am simply noticing it more or it is as I
feel, picking up more in frequency.

One thing I have noticed is that when I get a sound alert from an incoming
email from Outlook for example, Jaws will lose its focus. To be clear, this
also happens just randomelly as well, but it’s pretty consistent with this
incoming email alert correlation.

Anyone else dealing with this problem?

I emailed VFO a while back and got the standard “we’re not experiencing
this. It could be your set up.” Response.

I’m dealing with a similar issue in Outlook 2016, but that’s for another
email.

Anyway, please tell me I’m not the only one fighting with these Jaws focus
issues…

Thanks,

Cristobal

This is pretty cool. For those of us who already have Jaws, probably not a

And yes, I am aware of NVDA.

I’ve helped a VI low-income friend get a machine from this organization in

Once you get past the initial purchase of Jaws, if you price out the SMAs,
it’s basically a $5.00 monthly subscription anyway.

[JAWS-Users] Firefox 60.0.1 tracking shield alert and Jaws

2018-05-29 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

With Firefox 60.0.1, I keep getting the pasted alert below. I don’t seem to
be able to access/interact with it or otherwise dismiss it. I know if has to
do with the new privacy features in Firefox which is fine, but I’d like to
be able to disable this alert, find out where this shield is that it keeps
talking about and also be able to see what this whole 1 of 3 “next” part is.

Does anyone know how to access this particular notification/alert with Jaws?
Tabbing with F6 to the address bars and whatnot doesn’t’ seem to work. Nor
does poking around with the Jaws cursor.

[JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings

2018-05-29 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I was poking around Firefox after reupgrading to V 60.0.1 and going through
the various settings to make sure everything is how I want it and came
across the below:

Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r

 Use autoscrolling Alt+Shift+a

 Use smooth scrolling Alt+Shift+m

So, since I rarely ever deal with these particular settings, I forgot what
is advised. Whether to check or uncheck these three options? On the latest
Jaws 2018 May update and it is much better than the first go around with
Firefox 60.

Can anyone give me a refresher and what these three settings actually do?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

[JAWS-Users] New NoScript add-on layout with Firefox 60

2018-05-26 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So, I’ve been playing with Firefox 60 and the latest JFW 2018put out this
month. And I’m noticing that with the NoScript extension, now instead of the
various options to disable or enable the different scripts and whatnot on
pages, NoScript now presents you with a webpage with checkboxes instead of
the context menu where you can arrow into the submenu with the different
listed scripts.

I’m finding the new layout to be more tedious and not as easy to get around
and was wondering if there was a way to get the old context submenu layout
back or if this is how it is now? I poked around in the NoScript options and
didn’t find anything that jumped out to get the old layout back.

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Accessible Instapaper alternative

2018-05-25 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone can recommend any screen reader accessible
Instapaper alternatives?

I in general like Instapaper and have used it for a while now, but there are
some accessibility issues on the website that have never gotten fixed and I
think I’m at the point where I want to try something else.

It’s too bad as the iOS app is very accessible and having a nice
cross-plaftform service where one can save and sort articles and whatnot for
later reading/researching is a bigtime help. I know there’s Pocket, but I
don’t know if I want to pay $50 a year to go add free and whatever other
perks they offer.

So… if there’s something that replicates what Instapaper or Pocket can do
and is accessible, I’d appreciate the input. Ideally, an iOS app too.

Thanks,

Cristobal

At least from JAWS UI, in a given voice profile you can only set speed and

As an alternative, you may create a new voice profile whose primary language is

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

2018-05-11 Thread Cristóbal
I still had a 52.X ESR installer on my system. SO I just uninstalled V60,
ran the 52.X installer and updated to the most current one capable with the
older version and am now am on Firefox Version 52.8.0. The same one I was on
before trying the Quantum or whatever it's called.
The other issue I was having with Firefox 60 and Jaws on The Old Reader:
This is what I sent VFO:
I am noticing with the latest Firefox 60 (ESR and standard version) when
browsing down my list of RSS posts. Be it in a particular feed’s entries, a
folder created by me or even in the all posts view, when I click enter or
press the spacebar to expand that particular entry to show the summary (this
is in list view. Not full view) and then later wish to do the same for
another RSS entry, Jaws doesn’t appear to be able to accomplish this second
task.
I’ve tried using the Jaws cursor, maximizing the window and then pressing
enter or spacebar, tabbing to be sure Jaws focus isn’t somewhere else, but
nothing seems to work. It’s basically pick one RSS entry and that’s it. The
only thing I can do to be able to select another RSS entry to view is do an
entire page refresh. Which isn’t a solution as once the refresh occurs, all
previously unread posts are marked as read.
In my case, The Older Reader is marked as my home page and I refer to it all
the time. So this one bug is proving to be quite disruptive. I don’t know if
it has something to do with a virtual buffer focus or some other element,
but I am not able to figure it out on my end. To be clear, this particular
behavior is not present in prior versions of Firefox. I have been using the
V 52.x ESR version before upgrading to v60 without this issue present.
So anyway, in the same email response I pasted below, I got this note from
the same tech:
Also, I did see your other e-mail in which you mentioned a specific Web
site. I did look at that Web site, but I found that it requires signing up
for an account to see the issues. If you could provide us with a site with
these issues that does not require signing up for an account, that would be
very helpful.

Ok... but as I specifically mentioned this website, it kind of defeats the
purpose...
Again, probably one of those things I'd have to call in to better
demonstrate the exact problem, but I'm busy throughout the day and always on
the phone, doubt I'd be able to do it any time soon.
This is why I figured in part to just go back to V 52 and maybe wait for
another Jaws or Firefox release with hopefully some more improvements. I've
waited a few months, what's a couple of more weeks...
As long as you don't mess with your profile on your system, then
uninstalling and reinstalling any version of Firefox shouldn't be a big
deal. That said, standard caveats of backing up and all that apply. Also, I
do have a Firefox account for easier browser syncing between multiple PCs
and my iPhone so there's that too.

How did you revert to 52ESR? By uninstalling 60 and reinstalling 52ESR? I'm
hoping it was something else. I'd love to get 52ESR back with my settings
intact. meanwhile, I urge everyone else having problems with Firefox 60 to
contact VFO because otherwise they'll stall, the way they still stall on
making crucial 2018 fixes. But be sure you're using the current release of
2018 when you report Firefox 60 problems. Apparently, this release is
required for compatibility.

So, aside from me not waiting around a minute or two for every single

Regarding the alerts, I was able to disable those with an about:config tweek

I'm experiencing several problems with Firefox 60. Here's a copy of the
email I just sent VFO explaining what they are. I did mention in the message
that I recently upgraded from Firefox 52ESR to 60.

  1. When I try to log in to a website, Firefox's message offering to save
the log-in information is spoken, and then spoken several more times. I
caught that to decline, I should press alt-d. when I did so, Firefox hung up
and eventually gave me the options to wait or close. After what was already
a long wait, I closed it.

I've encountered this message several times since. Pressing alt-d led to the
same result, as did my try with alt-n (which often brings up other options).
The only way to get past this message is to wait for it to go away.

  1. On the donations page of the website
www.wnyc.org, the combo boxes for state and country
don't give any information, e.g., state abbreviations. These combo boxes do
work with IE11. A similar problem came up on another website with Firefox
60, but I can't be sure I've diagnosed the problem yet.

  1. Placemarkers are behaving erratically. None carried over from Firefox
52ESR, so I've had to start over again putting them in place. One repeating
problem is that even though I uncheck the box that would apply the
placemarker throughout a website, the placemarkers all apply on every page.
This means I've accumulated twelve placemarkers on every page of one website
I regularly visit, even though I want at most three per page.

  1. I'm also finding that some placemarkers just don't work when I press
the k key. Even though the placemarker list shows one for that location, k
doesn't locate it.

I'm working with JAWS 2018.1804.26.400,, and my OS is Windows 7.

So for full disclosure, I got my The Old reader issues I mentioned sorted
out.
Turns out, the problem was No Script disabling javascript which was
basically breaking the internet for me. Once I disabled NoScript, That
particular page and others I was dealing with were fine. I guess I have to
go into No Script to play around with the settings a bit more.
I did for whatever reason have a whole bunch of problems trying to get the
1Password extension properly installed and activated, but I eventually got
it to work too.
I suppose speed is fine, but more importantly, the browser just seems to
work now.

[JAWS-Users] Firefox 60 is out

2018-05-09 Thread Cristóbal
Somewhat surprised this hasn’t’ hit the list yet, but anyway… Firefox 60 is
finally out. Both regular and ESr.

So far with the latest Jaws, it seems to be working ok for me. Using the ESR
version in my case.

One frustrating thing though, my homepage which is the all posts page of The
Old Reader (www.theoldreader.com ) is acting
kind of funky.

My list of RSS subs isn’t showing up. Nor are the title subscriptions for
each post. Since this is my home page and I refer to it all the time to
check the news throughout the day, it may be disruptive enough for me at
least that I may go back to the ESR 52.X for now. By any chance is anyone
else who is a user of The Old Reader dealing with this particular issue?

Otherwise, no other problems that I’ve come across yet. I am noticing that I
need to screen refresh and or tab a lot more to get JFW to react or speak,
but I think I started to notice that even in the V 52.0.8 or whatever the
last version of ESR before V 60.

Anyway, for those who’ve been itching to give Firefox 60 a spin, knock
yourselves out.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws recently crashing with Chicken Nugget

2018-05-07 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So recently, I’ve been encountering an issue with the Chicken Nugget twitter
client (portable version) and Jaws. Starting on Friday, as I’m down arrowing
through the timeline of tweets, Jaws will just crash on me. Sometimes, I can
bring Jaws back with the insert plus alt plus W command, but often, I have
to resort to launching NVDA and killing the lingering Jaws processes in the
task manager to then be able to bring Jaws back.

As mentioned above, this is with the portable Chicken Nugget installer that
I’ve been already running for a while. My Jaws is current and while this
random crashing hadn’t occurred with earlier versions of Jaws, this issue
only started popping up last week. I’ve been running the latest JFW update
shortly after it was put out in the middle of April.

I reached out to the CN dev (Accessible Apps) and he confirmed what I
figured, that there was nothing on the app’s end that has changed to
suddenly caused this.

Are any other Jaws users dealing with anything similar when in CN?

Thanks,

Cristobal

2018-05-02 Thread Cristóbal
No, but Firefox V 60 should be coming out this month. It's supposed to work
with the latest Jaws. You could in the meantime do what a lot of others have
done and has been recommended by VFO and use the ESR version to keep up on
security updates.
I’m currently running Firefox ESR Version 52.7.4 that I just updated this
morning after I checked for an update.

You can also download an add-on. I have one instaled called Just Read that can

Hello Adrian,

You might want to try pressing Alt V followed by R. This should turn on and
off the reader view. I have a CTRL Alt R shortcut key assigned to a Remote
Incident Manager program and so when in Firefox I just use the view menu.

For anyone interested in getting reader view to work in Chrome, it works quite
well but needs some setting up. Here are some steps to follow for anyone
wanting to use the reader view feature in Chrome:

1. Locate your shortcut for opening Chrome, whether it's on your taskbar,
desktop or within the Start menu. Right-click it or use the application key and
open Properties from the contextual menu.
2. Tab until focus is in the Target edit box. the file path for the
Chrome application is shown in this field.
3. Add a space after the path text and then the following:
--enable-dom-distiller
4. Tab to the Apply button and use spacebar or click Apply with the mouse.
5. Close down all instances of Chrome. Icons in the system tray such as
Hangouts or Google Now will need to be closed.
6. Test out the Distill mode by opening Chrome from the shortcut you
edited. Go to a page containing an article. Use the Alt key and up or down
arrow to the “Distill page” menu item and press enter key. If using the mouse
click the icon with three lines in the top right-hand corner and choose Distill
page.

To go out of Distill mode you can use Alt with left arrow key. This will load
the page again in the usual manner.

Take care.

Don't know what to tell you. I use it all the time when reading articles in the
New York Times.
Control plus alt plus R is probably my most used Firefox command. I use
flexible web a lot less because of this.

The New York Times comes to mind right away as a publication where reading view

It does seem strange to me taht the reader sometimesfails to read an article
for me, though I can download the text and read it in the published format.
The Economist is the only publisher I've encountered which reader does not
read. Adrian, what are some publications which don't format in reader for you?
Maybe there is a common thread, like a hard pay wall. For sure, reader does
not read truncated articles (continued, read more, etc.) for the most part. It
usually in my experience requires a full article for it to open.

It doesn't work for me either, and although I could be wrong, I *think* this is
because we are both using Firefox 52/ESR. The reader view was a feature
introduced later; I'm not sure which version. I assume it works well with the
new Quantum ones, but so far, if you want to use JAWS with those, I guess you
are still out of luck, and versions between 52 and 57 are not supported by

[JAWS-Users] Stand alone Jaws accessible program on Windows 10 with Google Calendar integration?

2018-03-26 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

As the subject line states, I’m looking for a stand alone Jaws accessible
calendar with Google calendar integration. I do use Outlook and the outlook
calendar and while with some tinkering, you can import a Google calendar
into the Outlook calendar, you can’t do anything from within Outlook but
view appointments. I took a quick look at the built-in Windows 10 calendar
and wasn’t terribly convinced.

Anyone know of something that may work? That or can the built-in Windows 10
calendar app actually do this?

Thanks,

Cristobal

[JAWS-Users] Odd behavior with latest JFW update

2018-03-20 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Ever since updating to the latest JFW March update, I’m noticing an odd
behavior on webpages while in Firefox 52 ESR. Jaws will sometimes hang and
appear to refresh placing me back towards the top and if I try to jump back
and forth with the control plus up or down arrow for example to get speech
back, I’ll end up in a different tab.

Anyone else dealing with this?

As there are VFO folks on these lists, You wonder if they don't go about
reverse engineering this sale to figure out who was the rep that messed up if
in fact it was a mistake as it appears to be. I'm sure they've got to have some
sort of self-auditing type of system in place in general.
That's probably what I would do if for nothing else to figure out who needs a
bit more training or to be taken off of sales.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Two unsolved 2018 problems: Outlook 2016 email
readability and webpage stability

I've written and called VFO tech assistance about both these items. One is
that JAWS 2018 cannot handle complex emails in Outlook 2016. By "complex," I
mean ones that contain tables or are just very long. My workarounds are to
reopen the message in IE11 or unload 2018 and load either 17 or 18.

The other unfixed problem is that JAWS 2018 cannot maintain its location on
numerous webpages. When I switch away from a webpage and then return to it,
focus has wandered off somewhere else. this is true in both IE11 and
Firefox.

When I contacted VFO, I was told to change numerous settings. An obvious one
was making sure "smart navigation" is turned off, which it is. For email, I
also disabled the relevant table settings in JAWS quick settings. Other
settings changes the VFO rep strongly recommended were ones I want to keep
as they are. Besides, JAWS 17 and 18 read these messages fine without all
this meddling.

JAWS 2018 has some advantages. For example, I like the automatic OCR option
when a PDF file is determined to be "blank." Also, JAWS 18 sometimes detects
edit fields that JAWS 18 doesn't. As a result, I'm constantly switching
between versions. Not only is this distracting and time-consuming, it also
means that changes I make, such as to the JAWS dictionary, don't carry over.

If any other JAWS users are encountering either or both of these problems,
please alert VFO. Maybe they'll take them seriously if they receive a number
of complaints.

Oh, by the way, a predictable thing happened when I called. Every email
message I tried to use as a demonstration read fine. I also couldn't find a
webpage where JAWS lost its place. But I'm not imagining things.

Re: [JAWS-Users] turning off sounds in word, outlook etc.

2018-03-15 Thread Cristóbal
No. In Outlook at least, you have to go to options, ease of access and if
you want sounds disabled all together for the program, uncheck the first box
when you tab down. Otherwise if you tab after that, there are a couple of
sound schemes that you can pick from.
I for whatever reason started to get the annoying arcade game sounds when
deleting an email and other cartoonish affects that started to annoy me
since I deal with Outlook all day for business.
The control panel thing didn't work for me and the Microsoft accessibility
guy on the phone then suggested we do a Windows repair which I wasn't ready
to do. I poked around some more and came across this setting.
Outlook has been blissfully quiet ever since.
This is for Outlook 2016 to be clear.

Hi,

I'm using office 2016, windows 10 pro and jaws 18.

Every time I delete text it makes a sound, I thought to turn that off it was
in the word options under advance. However, I just came from there and I do
not see it.

There are other sounds being made depending on the action, but I just used
the delete for an example of what I'd like to do.

These sounds occur in any office application, not one specific. I mentioned
word earlier, since that is where I found it, to turn it off that is.

I've had this problem in prior Jaws versions when working in a Word or Outlook
email. Either replying or typing a new message. A simple Arrow down would do
nothing, but a controlplus arrow down or the same laptop command worked. It
used to be bad around a year or so ago. So far though, in the limited time I've

Currently on Microsoft Outlook Version 16.0.8431.2079 if that helps.

What's new in this release:

Enhancements in JAWS 2018.1803.24 (March 2018)

The following is a list of improvements made in JAWS 2018 between the
February 2018 update and the March 2018 update.

JAWS
list of 11 items
. JAWS will now unmute your sound card automatically. In addition to
refreshing the screen, pressing INSERT+ESC now also checks the sound device
being used by JAWS or Fusion to make sure it is not currently muted or has
the sound level set to 0 percent. If muted, it will be unmuted. Or, if the
sound level somehow got set to 0 percent, this new feature will raise it to
50 percent, allowing you to recover without getting assistance. The sound
device is also checked every time JAWS or Fusion is restarted. If you
purposely muted JAWS speech, there is not an issue as this new feature only
looks at the Windows setting for the sound card, not the JAWS speech
settings.

This sounds like the Webvisum add-on. I recalled going in and disabling some
settings as I only used it for the capcia stuff and didn't need the other
accessibility features. It may also depend on any other extensions you also
have running. NoScript can be pretty clicky too for example.

When Fire Fox starts, it keeps making an annoying clicking sound. I know this
mightt be due to Webvisum loading, but it can continue for a minute or longer
when clicking on a web site. Is there any way to turn off sounds in Fire Fox or
must we just live with them. This has been true for a long time with earlier
versions of JAWS and Window-Eyes. I’m finally getting tired enough of it to
ask about it. I didn’t see any options in the Fire Fox menus. Does JAWS have
any settings for this? I am using JAWS 2018 with Windows 7 64-Bit Pro. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS

2018-02-24 Thread Cristóbal
I just go into the Jaws desktop properties icon and punch in a number in the
shortcut prompt (which is automatically added to the control+alt sequence)
and continue to tab to the OK button.
I prefer to use the version number over the simple control+alt+J command
since I usually end up with more than one version of Jaws on my system
eventually. Control+alt+7 for JFW 17. Control+alt+8 for Jaws 18 and now for
version 2018, I just chose control+alt+2 and will likely go to control+alt+9
when Jaws 2019 comes out later this year.
You just have to redo this shortcut after installing every Jaws update which
is easy enough.

Hi, Folks. I'm one of those former Window-Eyes users who went kicking and
screaming over to JAWS. All that said, I only just yesterday started using
JAWS for the first time.

Anyway, my question is: Is there a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS if
it and some other software don't play nice together? I'm asking because I'm
an amateur radio operator (ham) and use an interface with a radio that when
plugged into my PC, takes all the sound away, including JAWS. At that
point, I need to restart JAWS, but see no keyboard shortcut to do this.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.--Matthew Chao

So I was able to get the email stuff set up. I’m seeing that for each
periodical, I'm getting four attachments per email with xml and other Daisy
extensions. I've tried opening them directly from the email, but it's not
working. Is this something where I have to download the files first only to
then be able to open in an application?

Yes, and you can do it in one of two ways: either the first issue of the
paper, or have it email you all updates (i.e. some papers continue posting
articles to various sections throughout the day).

that basically, I use Newsline to look through the book review section of
the New York Times on Sunday and to look at any important news story in Long
Island's newsday, if I receive an interesting headline in an email from the

material from Newsline. Additionally, I've discovered that sometimes, the
publications they have don't include all of the material that's actually in

That's due to the fact that Freedom Scientific insists on bundling FSReader,
its own daisy reader with its installations.

NFB Newsline, when it detects a Jaws screen-reader in use, won't let you
read daisy files in another program except to use FS Reader.

If you want to use your Outlook program to do it, you'll need to unload Jaws
and use an alternate screen-reader.

[JAWS-Users] Skype and Jaws 2018

2018-02-15 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone’s been using the latest Skype (be it the desktop or
Windows 10 app) with a telephone number and whether they’ve been able to
perform basic functions with Jaws? I know the Skype topic has come up
recently in the past and how there are some accessibility challenges with
it. But it looks like there’s a nasty Skype for desktop exploit out there
and since I don’t use the chat features, but rather just the phone aspect,
thus my inquiry.

I saw that Brian Hartgen commented on Twitter that he’s been using the
Windows 10 app and is pleased with it. I know Brian’s probably considered an
advanced power user, so maybe he knows how to work around stuff maybe more
than the “average” computer user.

Microsoft accessibility has acknowledged the accessibility difficulties with
the latest Skype updates, but as of yet, nothing’s been done about it.

IN any event, I’m still on Skype for desktop 7.4 and using the latest Jaws
2018. Again, I’m mainly interested in the telephone aspect of the program
and if it’s still workable with Jaws. Be it the dedicated desktop app or the
universal Windows 10 app.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-27 Thread Cristóbal
I'm going to have to pay more attention to this now. The only time I
absolutely know when Jaws freezes on me is when running a spell check in
Outlook before sending a message. It'll sometimes hang for a bit or outright
crash. I do get the odd Jaws freezing/hanging, but it's so random otherwise
that outside of the spellcheck thing, I can't really pinpoint a specific
behavior or sequence to it. I can usually tell when it crashes because my
Brailliant display will then just show the standard "Humanware Brailliant BI
40" message until Jaws comes back. This too is how I can tell in general
when Jaws has dumped on me since sometimes it can also be a pop up on the
screen or some other program that's frozen and gotte in the way of Jaws's
ability to speak. My sighted wife's bailed me out a few times by reaching
over and grabbing the mouse and closing whatever might be on the screen. And
like magic, Jaws comes back on its own.
There was an issue earlier this morning with Malwarebytes and some webcheck
update that was pushed out causing some weird ram spike and making
everything slow, crashy and buggy. It was locking up Jaws, NVDA and
Narrator. No matter what I tried, I would lose speech and I would have to
restart my desktop and laptop.
The only way I found out that it was Malwarebytes was by jumping online
between pc reboots and browsing through Twitter with my iPhone. There I saw
a tweet by them acknowledging that an app update was causing problems for
folks. They put out a fix about an hour later and both machines for me at
least are working as they should. It was a pretty stressful morning for
sure.

Hi Christóbal.

How much ram do you have on your computer?
Probably it can be a problem, causing to less ram.

I never recomend's a computer running Windows 10, Jaws 2018 and Microsoft
Office, with less than 8 gb ram.
Even with this setup, it sometimes can be a problem, when tables are very
complex in structure, and there is Graphic included.

I had no problem reading your table in the browser, but it is'nt the same as
reading it in MS-Word.

Hope you find a solution for your problem.

Hans Pauli.

Hello list,

So, I’ve been having problems with Jaws and large tables. As part of my
business, I work with one vendor that sends out assignments via email to bid
on. Jaws will often get sluggish or pause for a few seconds as I arrow down the
columns and will frequently crash outright. It’s become so much of an issue
that I’ve started to switch to NVDA when receiving one of these emails. I find
myself even having to go into the task manager at times to kill any JFW

I’m currently on the latest JFW 2018, but these issues were also present in
earlier versions of JFW 2018 as well as JFW 18. I’m using Outlook 2016 on a
Windows 10 desktop. This sluggishness also happens when I access the same
emails on my laptop with the same operating specs.

I use both eloquence with Jaws and NVDA. Again, NVDA seems to handle these
tables fine.

I reached out to Freedom Scientific with my problem and they wrote back saying
that they couldn’t reproduce my issue. So…

I was wondering if others were perhaps having similar problems with tables and
Jaws? I’ll go ahead and paste a sample email I get below.

Any input would be appreciated.

Windows 10 desktop. This sluggishness also happens when I access the same
emails on my laptop with the same operating specs.

I use both eloquence with Jaws and NVDA. Again, NVDA seems to handle these
tables fine.

I reached out to Freedom Scientific with my problem and they wrote back
saying that they couldn’t reproduce my issue. So…

I was wondering if others were perhaps having similar problems with tables
and Jaws? I’ll go ahead and paste a sample email I get below.

Any input would be appreciated.

I am sorry. I have no clue how this message ended up on this thread. It was
not suppose to do that, obviously.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Why does JAWS say "clickable" when it isn't?

2018-01-10 Thread Cristóbal
Agree. The very few times where there's an element that can be clicked through
for me at least doesn't warrant this feature to be enabled. Besides, you can
more or less tell if and when you can click on something to bring up a dialog
on the page.

if i could turn this off for all my screen readers i would do it. its totally

Hey Cristobal.

Yes, I know I can disable it, but having JAWS detect these elements is
potentially useful. It just seems like it's doing it wrong, and I'd like to
know why that is. I know I'm not the only one; does everyone else just turn the
whole thing off, or live with it?

Disable the detect elements setting in your Jaws settings. Going off of memory
so the exact terminology may be off, but it's easy to find. I'm sure someone
else will provide step by step instructions if needed.

I know this topic came up here some time ago, but I'm afraid it wasn't relevant
to me at the time and wasn't a thread I took the time to read. So, sorry for
bringing it up again.

But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there often *is*
"clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me of this fact.
But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there is
nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And can I get a
happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss important information
about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia article or IMDB review or
something and hear "clickable, clickable, clickable", on what appears to be
static text - that just seems like weird, excessive noise.

[JAWS-Users] How well does Jaws 2018 work with the latest Kindle for PC

2017-12-29 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was curious to know if anyone’s been using the most recent version of Kindle
for PC and Jaws 2018? I know there have been supposed improvements on both
sides in regards to accessibility, but poking around online, it doesn’t
really say how extensive. If things like highlighting or making notes, that
sort of thing can also be done with Jaws. I’ve heard that NVDA also is
supposed to work well with Kindle for PC, but NVDA is more my backup choice
for doing things. I’d rather stick with Jaws if possible. How about braille
display support?

I like FSReader and QRead well enough, but the most you can really do with
either program is bookmark. That and if you’ve got multiple devices you’ve
soon got a patchwork of books and bookmarks on different machines.

The idea of being able to make notations and highlight passages and have
synchronization across platforms and devices is appealing to me. Thus my
interest.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Hi,
A few questions:
* Is this really a Windows 10 Version 170x machine? The new Narrator command
is available from 1703 onwards. If Control+Windows+Enter doesn't work, try
Windows+Enter.
* Sounds like BitLocker (Pro and higher) is told to prompt you for a pin or
a USB drive. In this case, screen readers may not be available at that
prompt. The only way to circumvent this is turning off BitLocker completely
9unless your organization's policy says otherwise).
I'll forward this to another list to see if folks there have any answers.
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 & Windows10 -Login & BitLocker

Hi All,

We are continuing to have problems with logging into the Windows10 Dell 7440
test machine at work. Frequently JAWS appears to be clipped when it
initially launches prior to the login screen. When this happens, JAWS does
not come back until after the user has logged in and they are on the
desktop. So one thing I am asking that IT look at is the launch order. Am
I barking up an empty tree? Is there a way to change this order?

I've been attempting to use Control+Windows+Enter to turn on Narrator at the
login screen, but it will not launch.

In addition, sometimes BitLocker comes up and wants some type of action from
the user. Besides figuring out what is triggering what now appears to be a
random launching of BitLocker, I am looking for any tips on how a JAWS user
can get through BitLocker when it does come up. I'm guessing that there is
not a solution.

Thanks,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] Making annotations with eBooks

2017-12-10 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So was wondering on people’s strategies for taking notes or if they want to
make annotations in an eBook they may be reading. I do pretty much all of my
fiction reading via audiobook, but for nonfiction topics, while I do some
audiobook consumption, my preference is eBook. BookShare, ePub, etc.

Sometimes, you want to take note of a particular fact or passage and be able
to refer to it at a later time. With FSReader or QRead at least, I think the
most you can do is bookmark.

My college days are long past and even then, I did it the old school way
with Braille and cassette recordings.

More than anything, I’m just curious to know how folks do it to have their
virtual bookshelf marked up with their notes in the margins and so on.

I think you can do this with Kindle, but I don’t really use the Kindle
platform be it on my iPhone and not at all on my PC.

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to use jaws find in acrobat reader in a PDF document

I've generally used the insert+control+f command across all programs as it
seems to be nearly universal for Jaws as opposed to keeping track on which
applications may and may not allow the control+f command to find something.

Mary, I find that three-key combo works in a number of places. For example, it
functions differently enough in MS Word to make it sometimes a useful
alternative to MS's control-f find command. With PDF files, it's the only find
command that works while using JAWS.

Thank you for this information. Where should I have looked to have found that?

difference between control F and control jaws key f?

[JAWS-Users] Top 5 audio enhancers for Windows 10

2017-11-12 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone’s used any of these sound utilities and whether they
found them to be accessible and actually do in fact increase or enhance
sound quality? Be it audio in general (in my case a laptop) or even if
there’s any positive impact for a screen reader (for me Jaws with
eloquence).

I thought I’d ask first in case someone’s already put them through their
paces and can offer an opinion and hopefully help avoid having to install
and uninstall application after application. Link to the article covering
each one is also below.

Applications in question are:

1. DFX Audio Enhancer

2. Breakaway Audio Enhancer

3. Bongiovi DPS for Windows 10

4. SoundPimp Audio Enhancer

5. Fidelizer Audio Enhancer

[JAWS-Users] Trying to figure out Firefox bookmarks

2017-10-31 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Screen reader issues with the coming Firefox 57 aside, I know some add-ons
are going to stop working regardless when these pending problems are
resolved.

For years, I’ve been using the PlainOldFavorites extension and while I
haven’t actually used IE in forever, I’ve always liked IE’s favorites layout
simplicity

In any event, I’ve recently been trying to work with Firefox bookmarks and
am dealing with a frustrating issue. There appear to be some bookmarks that
no matter how much I try to delete/get rid of them, they’re still showing up
in my bookmarks menu. This is making jumping to a bookmark by the first
letter tedious and much longer than when working in IE’s favorites layout.
They seem to be showing up right after the most recent bookmarked option. Be
it deleted folders or unsorted bookmarks.

Was just wondering if I’m missing something on how to better sort the
Firefox bookmarks menu or if this is just going to be a part of dealing with
this feature? I do already have bookmarks set to sort by name.

Using the latest JFW 2018 recently released and am on Firefox 56.X. I’ve
already disabled the automatic update in Firefox and will only update once
the noted screen reader issues are finally resolved.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

2017-10-28 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list

So for the longest, I’ve been a Firefox user and have started to play around
with Chrome.

IN Firefox, there is a reader mode (alt+control_R) that you could activate
to get rid of a lot of clutter on websites that support it. This is almost
nearly universal, but for a few sites. CNN comes to mind.

IN any event, I was wondering if Chrome had an equivalent for this
feature/keyboard command? Poking around in the settings, didn’t really come
across anything. Nor did I find a keyboard command listed when doing a
general Google search for Chrome keyboard commands. I did find an extension
called read mode, but in its brief description didn’t mention a command.
Just some icon to click to enable and disable this layout.

I do use and like the Jaws flexible web feature, but the alt+control+r
command is probably my most used command in Firefox. Sometimes, you just
want in and out on a site without having to configure beyond that one time
you’re going to click through to read X, Y or Z.

I recall way back when, there was a programmer who put out some scripts for
Firefox and IE called IEMax and FireFoxMax or something. One of the nifty
keyboard commands in those scripts was a control+m for a pagination/reader
mode. It was incredibly useful. This was way back with Firefox 4 or 5.

Anyway, any help for a Chrome newbie on this particular command would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem trying to repair Jaws 18 before upgrading to V 2018

2017-10-25 Thread Cristóbal
Well… SO I first went back and clicked on the last October JFW .exe file I
had and the prompt of Jaws made changes to your computer. Restart for
changes to take affect etc. Came up. I thought… … … cool maybe it’ll work
after all. The PC restarted and I got the notification to modify/repair of
which I selected repair. I let it do its thing. Pressed the various OK
buttons and after it restarted again… … … the same reply/forward bug
appeared.
So I figured, I’ll go ahead and just install the new JFW 2018 released today
and as was suggested on another list. Not migrate any settings. Did the
whole song and dance. Restarted the machine. Went through the startup wizard
and… … … Low-and-behold, I’ve got the reply/forward bug on this new JFW
version as well.
This is the only real issue I’m encountering. And on this one machine. JFW
2018 on my HP Envy laptop is working perfectly fine. At least not getting
that reply/forward bug on it. Unfortunately, this is a rather noticeable bug
and present on my main work desktop. Both running Office 2016/Windows 10.
I guess I’ll have to try uninstalling and reinstalling next. That will have
to be with more time though.
I guess I can also as suggested try removing shared components. I don’t
think I want to do that quite yet… I don’t recall at the moment, but does
removing shared components mean you’ll then need an activation key? I’m
fairly certain that I’m currently at zero keys.
Anyway, something to worry about for tomorrow.
Thanks,

Hi Cristobal,

Don't worry about the Sentinel System Driver. It is already installed which
is why it did not copy. Not sure about the failed to install components
however.
The next thing to try is to just execute the install of the JAWS 18 again,
without using the / type repair.
When it starts, it will give you the choice as to what you want to do and
there is a repair option in that list. Please choose that one and complete
in install.
If you still have a problem, I would suggest uninstalling and removing
shared. Then do a clean install.

Eric

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Problem trying to repair Jaws 18 before upgrading to V
2018

Hello list,

So, I've been dealing with this issue since Jaws 18 was put out on 9/26/17.
Along with the Outlook address thing that later got fixed, I was having
trouble when replying or forwarding message in Outlook. Arrowing down was
not possible. Jaws would behave as though I was at the bottom of the screen.
Even if I arrowed up once and then tried going back down to the line I was
previously at, I'd encounter that same barrier. Navigating the message body
of text with the read by paragraph or sentence commands, Jaws worked as
always. It was just the read/navigate by line that was giving me problems.

VFO tech support emailed me instructing that I should try doing a Jaws
repair. Do the copy path from my JFW .exe file and add the / type repair at
the end in the run dialog box.

As I saw that Jaws 2018 came out today, I figured I'd try to get this
resolved. I for one reason or another hadn't had the chance to go through
with the repair, but figured I should try addressing it before upgrading to
JFW 2018.

In any event, I went through the repair process earlier today and along with
all the other typical Jaws chatter when doing an installation (I was using a
JFW.exe file from October that addressed the Outlook issue), I heard Jaws
say something about a sentinel system driver not being copied. By the end of
the process I then got the following error message:

The JAWS setup package could not install the required component

JAWSRepair. The process will now exit.

OK

I already wrote VFO back about this, but as it's Jaws 2018 release day, I
don't expect a follow up any time soon as I'm sure they'll be dealing with
all sorts of stuff related to that.

Anyone have an idea on what this is or how to fix it?

Thanks,

Cristobal

I just use Skype with a paid for telephone number and a Logitech headset
with a boom mic.
I don't recall the model headset, but it's pretty basic. Anything with a
boom mic will do. Jaws comes through both headphones along with the call.
Serves my purposes well enough.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New JAWS 18 build

2017-10-10 Thread Cristóbal
I'm still having an issue present in the last release where when replying or
forwarding an email in Outlook 2016, I can't arrow down. Jaws acts as if I'm
at the bottom of the screen. Using the read by paragraph or sentence
commands work fine and if I arrow up and then try to go back down by line,
the line I was previously on is no longer accessible to me with the read by
line command.
I wrote VFO about this last week along with the issue others were
experiencing with the email address bug. I was informed at that time that
they weren't getting this problem reported by others. It was suggested I do
a Jaws repair and remove some user settings. I really didn't want to go
through that hassle and was thinking of rolling back before I installed the
9/26/17 update with system restore, but then today's update came out. I was
hoping this would fix it along with that annoying email address bug. No go
though.
I wrote VFO again. So who knows. I haven't heard of this particular problem
come up on this and other accessibility lists so maybe it's just me after
all. Oh joy.
I'll wait to see what sort of response I get back in case they've by any
chance now encountered this bug with others.
At least the email address thing got fixed.

But it certainly did fix the problem with the auto complete addresses in
Outlook 2016. What a relief! Before I downloaded it, I was having to write

[JAWS-Users] Recommending Brian Vogel

2017-10-06 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So, a while back on this and other lists, I had posted an inquiry/request
for help on a task having to do with my business. I was looking to automate
a task of triggering an action on a link when a certain email from a
particular account would come in.

I had poked around online and while the general idea seemed possible, the
technical aspects were beyond my computer knowledge and abilities.

In any event, I got a near universal “can’t be done” on my query, but Brian
Vogel reached out and with his help, we were able to accomplish this task.
It took a couple of remote sessions and over the phone, but the deed got
done and he also at my request provided me with a guide/installer should I
have the need to replicate the steps on another machine in the future.

The fact that he was familiar with assistive technology (in my case Jaws)
made things a lot easier as well.

I would highly recommend Brian should anyone have the need for any computer
help beyond what may fall under the purview of this list.

Thanks,

Cristobal

[JAWS-Users] Another issue with the latest JFW 18 update

2017-10-02 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I’m encountering an issue with the latest JFW 18 update and Outlook 2016.

I’m noticing when I’m either replying or forwarding a message, I’m having
trouble accessing the entire message field. Be it to delete certain sections
of the email like headers or signatures or text in general.

Also, if replying, the replied to text isn’t accessible by Jaws. I’ve tried
maximizing window, alt tab and then back and so on, but that part of the
message just doesn’t show up. This behavior isn’t consistent and is somewhat
hit or miss. But enough so that it’s quickly becoming annoying and
disruptive.

Between this and the bug where email addresses aren’t being announced by
Jaws in the to/cc/bcc fields, I’m finding this update of Jaws to be a dud
and am considering rolling back.

Is anyone else dealing with this odd issue?

Re: [JAWS-Users] The Codex converter instructions for Kendal books

2017-09-19 Thread Cristóbal
I mean, it literally says on the website:
• If you wish to carry on using Codex to convert all your Kindle purchases,
you will need to avoid updating to any release of Kindle for PC with a
version
number higher than 1.17. If you have not already updated to Kindle for PC
1.19, you can open the Options dialog from the Tools menu and uncheck the
box
which reads: “Automatically install updates when they are available without
asking me”.
http://jscholes.net/using-codex-with-kindle-for-pc-1-19/
I'm using the older Kindle for PC version and have had no problems
converting and reading in QRead for example.
The old Kindle for PC application is still kind of crappy as far as
accessibility, but you only need it to download the title. After that, you
don’t' really have to interact with it.

I know that many of you downloaded the codex to convert the Kendal books.

Sadly enough, the steps to convert books are right on the download page, but
never the less many passed the information by. Steps to convert Kindle
books:

1. Download Kindle app to PC

2.Go to Kindle content on the desktop,

3. Should see a list of your books, click on applications and make
sure that the book is actually downloaded

4. Open up Codex app and press Alt/T

5. Arrow down to brows downloaded Kindle books and press enter

6. Find book that you want to convert, if not in list, then it is not
downloaded into your Kindle folder

7. After you choose book, you can choose the file type, Word, Epup,
PDF and so on.

[JAWS-Users] Instapaper versus Pocket and accessibility

2017-09-10 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So for the longest, I’ve been using Instapaper to save various articles to
read later. I mainly do so via the iOS app on my iPhone. This arrangement
has served me well.

Nevertheless, the actual website has been and continues to present some
accessibility issues. I’ve written the Instapaper folks about this as well
as VFO. VFO took a look at the site and pointed out some areas where
accessibility is lacking. I provided this info to Instapaper as well. The
site still has the same issues. The Instapaper folks gave lip service on how
they take accessibility seriously and would look into it, but nothing’s
changed.

IN any event, I’ve found myself needing to check out my article database
more and more on my PC. TO this, does anyone know if Pocket has any better
accessibility on the computer in conjunction with Jaws? I’m on V 18 with
Firefox as my main browser.

I guess I’m also interested in how accessible the iOS app is, but for now,
more so the actual website on the PC. It would be a hassle to have to
transfer everything I’ve saved over the years just to find out that Pocket
may have accessibility problems of its own.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to copy audio files and maintain track order.

2017-08-01 Thread Cristóbal
Going to have to edit the file metadata. I've always used MP3Tag for this. A
quick Google search will bring up the page.
I use an older version since it's always worked well for me and is fully
Jaws accessible. I tried upgrading once, but found it wasn't as intuitive as
the version I was using.
In any event, editing the tags so the files are labeled 01, 02, 03, etc as
far as numeration will resolve that issue.

[JAWS-Users] Automatically open link in received email via Outlook 2016

2017-07-31 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So, part of My business in tales accepting freelance assignments via email
with a corresponding accept/reject link. These assignments are time
sensitive and they’re pretty much first come, first serve.

A good description of what I’m looking for is contained in this forum thread
link.
https://forums.slipstick.com/threads/94167-automatically-open-link-in-email-
received/

I’d like to have an automated action where as an email comes in the accept
link is activated without me having to navigate to the email, open it,
scroll down to locate the link and then click.

I’m in general pretty fast at this, but I still lose time when having to do
all the steps above. Especially trying to get to the proper link. That’s
also if I’m not at my computer and haven’t stepped away for this or that
reason or if Jaws decides to at that time act all weird on me.

These emails can come in for a lot of Southern California. I’ve already
filtered out areas that I don’t wish to cover and only receive emails for
the areas I know I can do or get covered.

The thread referenced above talks a lot about scripting and macros and while
I’m a pretty competent PC user in general, scripting, coding and macros are
areas where I simply have no knowledge of.

Can anyone help me out either by pointing me in the direction to some
resources on where I can learn about this stuff to where it doesn’t’ seem
like hieroglyphics or perhaps help me out with this particular task?

The link above talks abut Outlook 2007, but I’m using V2016. Also a Jaws 18
user. My default browser is Firefox.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Request for suggestion for an accessible rss reader for firefox

2017-07-05 Thread Cristóbal
It works with all browsers as it is webbased. It's basically a website. You
can sort by folders, read, unread, oldest to newest and vice versa.
There are some keyboard hotkeys and commands, but at least in my case, as a
Jaws user, I more or less get around like any webpage. I may on occasion use
a hotkey command. In those cases, I invoke the insert+3 Jaws command to
bypass the screen reader command.
If memory serves, there is a free plan for less than 100 feeds. I've been
using it for a few years now and pay $2.00 a month. Instead of the $3.00.
There may be a discount if you pay for the full year.
It also integrates with other services like Instapaper and you can share via
Facebook and email, etc.
Also, if you have an iOS device or even an Android, it works with certain
RSS apps on those platforms. I use Feeddler Pro on my iPhone/iPad. It
synchronizes in real time.
All in all, a good solid service which in my case at least, I don't mind
paying for.

[JAWS-Users] Problem with Firefox constantly refreshing and Jaws

2017-05-18 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I’ve been encountering this problem today. In Firefox 53.0 and the latest
JFW 18, the page is constantly refreshing making me lose my place. This is
getting rather annoying fast.

Be it in a Google search results page or other pages. Side note, I’m trying
to look up issues with my Outlook Exchange server not connecting, but it’s
becoming nearly impossible since I’m always getting placed at the top of the
page.

I have the refresh page settings in Jaws set to off and off the top of my
head, don’t’ recall this issue present even yesterday. Firefox is my default
browser, so haven’t yet tried another browser.

Any ideas how to stop this disruptive behavior?

and start speaking the content of another view in outlook. The only way for
me to get focus back and navigate the window I’m in is to tab/shift+tab or
control+tab/control+shift+tab.

I have noticed this issue in earlier versions of Jaws 18/ 17, etc. Also in
Outlook 2010. I’m not entireley sure, but it feels like it’s happening more
often with Outlook 2016. It could be though that this is the program I use
the most throughout the day and thus deal with this focus issue more often
because of it.

Is anyone else dealing with this problem and do they perhaps have a fix for
it that I’m maybe not aware of? That or is it another one of those Jaws

I do encounter this problem on two separate machines. A Dell desktop and HP

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows

2017-03-09 Thread Cristóbal
The KNFB Windows app has a file explorer function where you can select a
file to perform OCR on. You can also save the OCR results into an
alternative format.
Since it works with scanners and cameras, and if you want to review the
results in more detail than just having KNFBReader read everything back to
you in one stream, you can save the OCR results on to your computer.
The Jaws OCR function is ok for a quick check of things, but KNFBReader
gives a more detailed and accurate scan.

My question is how do you use this blasted thing.

When I scan, do I place it on the keyboard? Or every time I am scanning I
need to have my scanner connected to it so I would need to place the paper
on the tray of the scanner??

Hi Group,

Does anyone know how to make the KNFB app for windows read line by line?

All I have been able to figure out is how to stop the reading and start it
again using ctrl + P. If anyone has a list of short cut keys that would be
helpful too. I have looked online but have not found anything.

Just enable the PC cursor again by pressing the numpad plus button once or
twice or Jaws key+semicolon if using the laptop keyboard layout. Then you
can arrow around like normal.

Since my Open Book software has run away from home during my move, or may be
in a box placed above my head, I was hoping to get this for my
printer/scanner, however, Jaws turns on the touch cursor and when I tried to
buy the site locked up and after 30 minutes I had to turn off the computer
to get it to unlock. Not a happy camper. Especially since the sale is so
limited, already paid full price for the app on my phone which I can use but
I am not particularly handy with the camera.

I like the app on my phone but there are times I'd rather used my scanner.

Apparently I will have to pay another full price due to the limited nature
of this sale, drives me crazy, the Android app (I do not have an Android
device, was on sale for ever and ever. I can afford the full price but, it
is annoying to have to pay that again when I did so in 2014. Then they
started the half price occasional sales but I did not need to buy the app
again.

Oh, well such is life.

From what I can tell, it does a brilliant job of scanning. I'm using a
Cannoscan. I think that's what they're called. The small portable scanner.

[JAWS-Users] New KNFBReader app for Windows 10

2017-03-01 Thread Cristóbal
Don’t knowif others have come across it yet, but seems that there’s now a
KNFBReader app available for Windows 10. If you have a laptop with a webcam
or a stand-alone webcam or if you have a scanner it’s supposed to work as an
oCR solution.

Of course my luck, I just got around to upgrading to Kurzweil1000 14 last
month.

Anyway, for those who have downloaded it, can they comment on accuracy or if
scans are comparable to K1000?

Also, does this app work with Jaws unlike K1000 where you have to switch
between programs and keyboard commands?

If it takes away the step of switching between programs and keyboard
commands, I may still be interested.

It’s on sale for $20.00 for the next couple of days. Whereas the regular
price seems to be $100.00 like the iOS app

Jim:

I'm now using Outlook 2016, but I think the process for adding contacts was
the same for Outlook 2010.

Basically, I get into my address book via control shift B. and then use my
Alt key to get into the menus. Once in the menus, I up arrow several times
until I get to "add new entry".

I hit enter on that, and tab to add to contacts, and then to ok.

Then, I'm put into a group of tabs for the various entry fields, which I
then fill out as needed.

Then, at the very end of the tabs, I am put into a document field, which
contains the new contact information. I then hit escape, and I am asked if
I want to save my document, which actually is my new contact entry. I arrow
to "yes", and am done.

I realize that this method is rather complicated, and much more difficult
than used to be the case with Outlook Express, but it seems to have worked
for me, and I have over 700 contacts in my address book.

Things now seem to be working properly again.

Not sure how things got changed, so I'll have to monitor things to be sure

Insert+J when you have JAWS 17 running. Then Options/Basics. Go through
Insert+all
the checkboxes in the "Automatically Start JAWS" section. It's likely that
something got unchecked.

Hi Tom,

You can try the following for your 1st issue, but I can't help with your 2nd
issue:
Note: The steps below were performed running Windows 7 & JAWS versions 15
thru 18. These steps won't work with Windows 8 or 10, & why they won't is
below my steps.
For those of you that have Jaws set to start at the Windows log-in screen,
but it doesn't, this might work for you. I looked in, msconfig, & found
that JAWS Freedom Scientific wasn't at the top of the list on the Start-up
Page / Tab, so this is what I did.
1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the run dialog.
2. Type, *msconfig*, without the stars, & press enter.
3. Press, control + tab, until you get to the, Start-up Page / Tab.
4. I arrowed down the list, & unchecked any items above, JAWS Freedom
Scientific, on the Start-up Page / Tab.
Note: Only uncheck the items / programs above JAWS Freedom Scientific, &
nothing else. Pay close attention to what you uncheck because you are going
to recheck these items / programs shortly.
5. Tab to the, Okay, button, press the spacebar, & tab 1 time to, Restart, &
press enter to restart your computer.
6. Once your computer is booted up repeat steps 1 thru 3, & you will notice
that JAWS Freedom Scientific is now at the top of the list.
7. Now, arrow down the list of items / programs on the Start-up Page / Tab,
check the items / programs that you unchecked previously, & repeat step #5.
Now Jaws should start on the Windows log-in screen when your computer
starts. I did the above steps on 4 different computers, both desktop &
lattop, 'm not going to say it works everytime, but it sure works most of
the time, which I can say is a damn site better than before I followed the
above steps.
Take care.

A final follow up to this issue.
I reached out to Microsoft Accessibility. After going over everything, they
suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for whatever reason
went bad. We tried going into the update section of settings and it kept on
closing on me with all sorts of error messages.
The FS tech who I spoke to (Dennis I believe was his name) also mentioned
this as a possibility.
In any event, with my still working Windows 7 laptop, I downloaded a Windows
10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife
following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs in tact.
This did the trick. It ran, rebooted a few times and is now up and
functioning as it should with all sounds and services running.
Thought I'd share should anyone ever come across a similar problem. Needless
to say, I'm going to keep a Win 10 recovery disk handy from now on.
Been using Jaws since V 3.7U and this is the first time I encountered an
issue such as disruptive as this during an update.

Crist says he started the process form the downloaded installer. From that
point of view, he did everything right.

Crist, if you and your wife can arrange it, I think you need to call FS
together. They need to know that installation of the current JAWS 18 caused
this nightmare, and they will be eager to help. I'm guessing you somehow
went into diagnostic mode instead of normal startup. I did this once when

me out of it. My guess is that FS/VFO can do this for you.

Well, I spoke to FS support and they as I figured were stumped. What they
did suggest and what I'll probably do is to grab the drivers off Dell's
website and manually install them with a thumb drive since I for whatever
reason am not even getting an internet connection even though I'm hard wired
to the router. I'll deal with the internet thing later if I can get sound
back first.
I may even run down to BestBuy and buy a cheap external soundcard just to
see. So... Anyone have an suggestion on a cheap external sound card by the
way?
I might even try giving Microsoft accessibility a call over the weekend.
The saga continues.

Probably going with either One Password or LastPass.
Reading reviews, one comment as a drawback about onePassword is that you have
to log in multiple times. Is this an issue encountered by lots of folks? The
less in the way the better.
Also, both these services seem to do more or less the same thing. Wondering why
OnePassword is much more costly than LastPass?

[JAWS-Users] Question on Outlook 2016 layout

2017-01-30 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I grabbed an Office 2016 license and am getting used to it. For the most
part, Outlook 2010 which I was using previously and 2016 don’t seem
drastically different but there are a couple of things that I’m trying to
figure out.

In prior versions of Outlook, when setting the reading pane to either right
or bottom, you could tab and shift+tab from the list view and message body.
Now, if I do that, all I get is two buttons that say all and unread. I can
get to the message body and back with the control+tab and shift+control+tab
and I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but was curious if I was missing
something and if there were a way to in fact get the old behavior back?

Same goes in the contacts tab. In Outlook 2010, I could highlight a contact
and tab down to the notes section to the notes section where in my case, I’d
have information such as address/telephone number or if it is a business
with multiple locations, all addresses. I found this to be faster than
actually clicking on the contact and tabbing all over the place for the
same information.

Now, it seems I have to open the contact and shift+tab to the notes button
and click on that to open the notes section. Again, is there a step to avoid
these extra steps and simply have the notes part show up as before?

These are the main two things I’m noticing. Other stuff I’m more or less
getting used to.

I’m running the latest JFW 18 on Windows 10 Pro.

Thanks,

Cristobal:

I found where to switch my g-mail account to basic HTML view on the g-mail
web site, and discovered that the folders are much easier to navigate this
way.

However, I went into my drafts folder, and discarded all drafts; but the
drafts still seem to be stuck in my Outlook 2016 drafts folder.

This now seems like an Outlook problem, and I'm not sure how to solve it
from here, since working within my g-mail account itself did not seem to
correct things.

I tried the Shift delete key method several times for each of the three
e-mails that are now permanently stuck in my Outlook 2016 drafts folder, and
the messages keep re-appearing.

In other words, they just don't go away!

I have also tried going to the gmail web site, and deleting the messages
from my personal g-mail account. But, I find the web site itself difficult
to navigate, and I have difficulty consistently getting to where I need to
go to delete those messages.

I guess my only option at this point would be to disconnect from the
internet, and see what happens from there. That just doesn't seem like it
should be necessary, though!

Click yes and it should be gone.

This works when I've got a message stuck in the outgoing folder.
If you're on wifi, just disable the wireless on your machine and if you're
hard wired, depending on what system you're running, go into adaptor
settings or network (maybe someone else can give you specific
instructions) and disable the connection. Then go back and try to delete
the messages and hopefully after they're gone, go back and enable your

If you're in Gmail's standard view, then there's going to be a button at
the top of the screen saying "Basic HTML view". Clicking on that will
take you to the more traditional and screen reader friendly layout.
Once there, you'll be able to search for and find the drafts folder easily.
With the Jaws insert+f7 or a simple Jaws search for Drafts.

Thank you!

If you find the standard view for Gmail too difficult to navigate, you
can always switch to the basic HTML page and access the drafts folder
from there.

Mr. Ed:

Hi Tom,
Have you tried doing a shift + delete key. Then you should get a message box
that comes up asking you if you want to permanently delete the message.

[JAWS-Users] Tradeoffs with Abby FineReader from Kurzweil 1000

2017-01-01 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I have Kurzweil 1000 and am considering switching to Abby FineReader for my
desktop OCR needs. I’ve never really got use to the K1000 commands or
interface and a lot of the extras that K1000 offers simply aren’t of
interest to me. Included calculator, calendar, database look up, etc.

Like everyone else on these lists I imagine, my main interest is OCR
accuracy which from my understanding shouldn’t be a problem since K1000 and
OpenBook use the FineReader OCR engine anyway.

As a Jaws user, I am also interested to know of any possible issues or
drawbacks/compromises one might encounter when using Abby FineReader as
opposed to K1000.

Between my iPhone with a ScanStand and the Jaws OCR feature I find myself
using or needing a standalone desktop solution less and less, but for those
times I do need one or wish to use for more involved scans, I’d like to be
able to use something where I don’t have to remember a completely different
set of other commands and settings like in K1000.

I am using JFW 18 on both Windows 10 and 7 computers.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal
