I'd even go as far to suggest that they split off the reports (printed

buttons/menus in Legacy. They would just be separate executables. I
don't think most users would even notice the difference, except for the
fact that these windows could stay open while you were off working on
something else in Legacy.

P.S. I don't know what the ramifications of having the same Access db
open in two separate applications would be.

RE: [LegacyUG] Correcting faulty Legacy 5 update install

2006-02-27 Thread LegacySupport
Ian,

To go back to Legacy v5 after having installed Legacy v6:

1. Uninstall Legacy 6.0. This will not delete any of your family files,
pictures or other data. It will only remove Legacy 6.0.

2. With Windows Explorer find and look in the C:\Legacy folder or what ever
folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you will find
several files remaining that you will need to delete. Carefully delete all
of the files in the Legacy folder but DO NOT delete any of the folders like
the Data folder, Picture Folder or Web Folder as these folders hold your
data and you don't want to accidentally delete your family file or pictures.
All the other files should be deleted.

3. Use this link and download and install the final build of Legacy 5.0.
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion5.asp

The password required when Installing is:

   Password: family

4. Start Legacy 5.0 and click on Help, Unlock Deluxe Edition and enter your
version 5.0 Deluxe Edition Customer Number.

With the latest build of Legacy v5, you'll have no problems opening files
that were opened in Legacy v6.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I am interested in the possibility of reverting to Version 5. I have updated
to Standard Version 6 (operating on Windows 98) but it seems to be a lot
more resource intensive. I am running out of memory (even with other
programs closed) and have several times managed to get the message Run-time
error '-2147024882 (8007000e)', either when using split window and/or
sub-windows e.g. edit [person] - add event - add source - cite source etc
[crash!]

I never had these problems with Version 5. If I go back, what happens to the

still be able to open/edit them?

Or is there something else wrong - perhaps a bug that is about to be
corrected??

Winifred,

You could always get a new copy of the Version 5 Install program then
and save it to the Download Folder. Previous versions of Legacy can be
downloaded from
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion5.asp. The proper
full install version is the second choice and is 16.4 MB. The first is a
smaller program that will download files from the web as it does the

Regrettably, v6 requires substantially more resources than v5 and will
prove a losing battle on machines below XP. The future bodes no better.
I believe that your file will still work correctly after installing the
last available build of v5; you can always install it before removing v6
to be sure (backing up everything first, of course).

As I understand it, the last version of 5.x was able to read the file format
of 6.x.

And it's a perrennial problem. I stuck to version 4.0 for a long time because
my hardware could not cope with the extra memory requirements of 5.0. I saved
up and bought a new computer that could cope with the extra memory
requirements of 5.0 and then 6.0 comes out, and I can't afford to buy yet
another new computer.

I do wish they would split off the bells and whistles like Research
Assistants into a separate program, and concentrate on making improvements

not overwrite Legacy.exe because it should have been named
Legacy5Setup.exe.

Have you tried running your Legacy? Be brave, you will probably find it
 still works.

You should be able to copy the installer program to your download folder
then run it to install the last update to Legacy 5.

  Sherry,
Please help me. I fear I have made a big mess. I have been ill and
unable to
  convert to Legacy 6.
Today I was getting ready to do it by downloading the last update to
Version
  5. The last update I had was 12 June 2005. I am using Windows XP with
SP2. I
went into Internet Explorer, Legacy Family Tree, Help, Downlad and found
the
last update to Version 5, but instead of downloading it into myy
download
box I downloaded it into Legacy 5.
Of course, it won't work that way. I tried to uninstall Legacy 5 to redo
it
right, but could find no uninstall button. I fear everything is
corrupted.
What can I do to correct it?Thank you for your consideration.
I wish I had stayed away from the computer another day. I have been at
this
for many years and should have known better.

I have Version 5.0.0.256 (Deluxe) on my old computer and will need to
install the same version, free edition, on my new computer in order to

spending two hours searching the Legacy website, I cannot find any

What have I missed? Advice/instructions gratefully received.

Re: [LegacyUG] Correcting faulty Legacy 5 update install

2006-02-25 Thread winmcl
Brain
When I click on Legacy5 to open it, Windows XP comes up with this:
Open File - Security Warning.
Name: Legacy.exe
 Publisher: Unknown Publisher
Type: Application
 From: C:\Legacy.
Run
Cancel
At the bottom, it says The File does not have a valid signature that
verifies publisher. Only run software from a publisher you can trust.
When I press Run, it quickly goes through installation, then says Legacy is
installed. When I press the lLegacy button again and the same window
appears. That is the dilemma.

If I copy the Legacy5setup.exe file to my Download floder and install it
from there, do you think it might patch it up.

 Brian:
Thank you for your encouragement. I found the Legacy5setup.exe file in the
Legacy 5 directory. It is dated 12/28/204, 141 mb. The proper date should
be
1/28/2006, so I guess that is not the file I need. Search does not find
another file. I did find the uninstall file in the Legacy directory, but I
will not use that till I am sure what I am doing. I do not want to install
Legacy 6 yet. I am going to wait until I am in better condition and able
to
 handle new stuff.
Is there something else I can do?

  Winifred,

  All may not be lost!

The file you downloaded from the web site is an install program. It did
not overwrite Legacy.exe because it should have been named
 Legacy5Setup.exe.

Have you tried running your Legacy? Be brave, you will probably find it
