128 MB of RAM, with GNOME/KDE is just bad nowdays. Use a *light*
windowmanager, like windowmaker/icewm, turn off the themes, stop your
 gnome/kde apps, and try it.
256 MB of RAM is a must with KDE/Gnome stuff. You could recompile
Mozilla and strip or a lot of components as well.

Yeah very much truei am having 64 mb with rh 9.0 installed and using
blackbox...its really smooth.
Some of the appications which require memory are Evolution, Mozilla and Openoffice.
I have replaced Evolution with sylpheed...(which is very much good on low memory.),
Thinking of replacing mozilla with firebird..though mozilla is somewhat ok on
blackbox

how long will it take for me to setup a gentoo machine which has most of the
things a normal redhat pc has ? I certainly would love to try out my hand on
gentoo. I was vary of taking a step because, i heard that gentoo does not
release patches soon and the latest libraries. I dont know how true it is,
please correct me if i am wrong.

Depends on your connection speed and hardware
There r 3 stages of install, if u start from stage1 it will take some real time for
building the base system itself. Stage3 is already a built system..i.e its equivalent
to
cp -ax /mnt/existingsystem /newgentoosystem
After that the time depends on the number of packages you choose...
It would take a day or two if you have a fairly decent system with a decent connection.

Try installing the font packages from the redhat cd's.

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config(RH 9) is the file which has the path to the fonts

I am not sure if yours is a font specific problem...
Check out one/all of the following
1. Check if u r low on disk space..then recover some space.
2. mount you redhat cd and check you have some rpm by this name
XFree86-base-fonts-version or some thing like that..Try installing that font rpm.
3. check the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config and see that all the font files

Re: [LIH]Mail delivery problem

2003-09-30 Thread G.Vinubalaji

A clear PERMFAIL 5xx is issued. What do you mean the mail is denied
 but not bounced back?

I meant the mail remains in the queue and qmail keeps on trying to send
it to sourceforge,
after say about a week it bounces back to me.
I can see that it used to return a 550 error.

550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

So does qmail or whatever MTA tries to send the mails keep on retrying
for the problem to get solved.

 1. Checks for a proper HELO - syntactically correct (underscores are
not valid in HELO for example)

 2. Makes a smtp callback (connects back to the sending domain's MX and

verifies if ... 1. the user sending it exists, 2.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] exists)... only then does it let your mail
 through.

Thanks a lot for this info.

Re: [LIH]Cannot Login from Console.

2003-10-08 Thread G.Vinubalaji
I am running a Redhat Distro, the machine boots to run level 5, I cannot
login to the machine through telnet, but am able to login through ssh, also

do you mean root login or any login?

As suggested ssh is the way to go, but still if
you want to configure telnet for any reason(s) go ahead..
root login is not recommented instead you should login as any user and do a su.

the biggest mystery is I am not able to login to the machine through Command
Line, but am able to login in GUI mode, in command line it just gives me the
login screen, when I enter a user name and press enter it just comes back to
the login screen again. The /etc/securetty is fine, no changes made, there
are no logs also for me to debug.

Any pointers to how to troubleshoot this.

The configuration file related to login is /etc/pam.d/login. May be its configured
wrongly. You should get some message in the logs for invalid logins or login failure.
Otherwise add some debug options in the pam configuration (/etc/pam.d/login).

The securetty file should contain the list of all the terminals that the
user can login from may be the terminal from which you are trying to login
is not listed in /etc/securetty.

To my understanding you have a windows and/or dos system + a linux

you reinstall windows or some software.

If this is what you want then you could just copy the kernel and initrd
to the dos partition before reinstalling windows and boot up from pure
dos prompt using loadlin.
OR
Just get a linux boot floppy or a linux boot cd. Any linux cd will do
for that matter since you are going to boot in rescue mode only.

2003-11-13 Thread G.Vinubalaji
That was a good reply to the query . However could I get any links
which compare the 2 databases? Also I heard that the latest versin of
 MySQL is better .

Google for Mysql vs Postgresql and you will find lots of link related to
that and you will finally conclude that both are equally good and there
is no specific benchmarking tool. You should find an article on
phpbuilder which says Postgresql is better than Mysql and how
sourceforge.net performed a real time analysis by shifting from mysql to
Postgresql. Mysql site has justifications for this. But i think
sourceforge.net uses db2 now.
On the whole the performance tuning plays a critical role and the
version of the db you use also makes a difference. Postgresql is more
full fledged with supports for subqueries, transactions and everything.
Mysql is also coming with this support by providing different table
types like Berkeley DB tables and InnoDB tables.

This mounts the file system with default options. So instead of
user, noauto you will have the default options i.e with rw, suid, dev,
exec, auto, nouser, and async.

From the man page of mount
defaults
Use default options: rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, and async.

and
exec Permit execution of binaries.

So when defaults is specified it mounts with all the options including
the exec options. So exec is the option which you missed.

if you had specified exec, noauto, user as the option in the fstab then
you would have able to execute the binaries as well.

What i tried was give defaults, user as the option in the fstab and it
just ignores the defaults, so the exec was not included..

Re: [LIH][Fwd: How do i enable identd at bootup]

2003-11-23 Thread G.Vinubalaji
I use identd so that I can connect to EFNET IRC servers. Right now I
 have to manualy

 $ service identd start

I guess you are using a redhat type distro.
ntsysv is the command to setup all the services thru a curses based
interface.
redhat-config-services is the command to setup the services using a
gui.
chkconfig is the manual way of doing the same.
Or if you want a more manual way just create a Sxxidentd symbolic link
pointing to /etc/rc.d/init.d/identd at rc.3 or whatever runlevel you
want
to use identd and a corresponding Kxxidentd in the
rc.0 and rc.6 directory. xx is a number that you have to decide based on

the dependencies of your startup script.

2003-12-07 Thread G.Vinubalaji
I am currently working on a project in which I need to do a 'special'
thing. I want to stop the TCP/IP stack of my machine from sending out
 certain packets.

This should be possible with a simple iptables rule. Netfilter framework
allows you to add any rule to the packet. If you want the packet could
be also be passed to a user space program(Using the QUEUE target rule)
where you can manipulate the packet and just drop or send the packet
back to the kernel. www.netfilter.org

.xinitrc is the other way of achieving the same..
But starting xinit and typing startx is the best thing the poster could
do to find the exact cause of the error and also checking the log files

Re: [LIH]Linux Installation

2003-12-11 Thread G.Vinubalaji
Unfortunately I cannot. The reasons are a) the machines do not have
exactly the same configuration. b) a couple of machines are under
warranty and opening them up will void their warranty.
Also, I forgot to mention that I will be using Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2

Yes you can if you have the fairly same hardware. If say you have a
different processor then since redhat or Mandrake copies the kernel
based on the processor, you cant.

The partitioning will be a bit of problem, if you have hard disk of
different sizes, but still you can by just changing the ks.cfg
(Kick start) file to create different partitions based on the hard disk.

ks.cfg is completely configurable and i dont know if mandrake provides
the method. There is no need to open the box or anything, you can
install using nfs and the ks.cfg.

Otherwise check out the softwares like partimage (www.partimage.org) or
the systemimager mentioned earlier, which(partimage) also has an option
for installing the image from network or write into a cd and install
from that.

may be in this or some other machine, you should find the
gtk-devel tar file in/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES and a spec file in
/usr/src/redhat/SPECS(Which may also have what patches you have to apply
to make the source compile)

/var/lib/rpm, i can no longer go by this route. i did do a rpm -iv

 dont work.
(relating to my /var/lib/rpm problem, I also tried rpmdb --initdb and

Have you installed any new packages or only the redhat 7.1 default

This should work most of the cases, if it works put it into your

You need to configure your modules.conf file to have full duplex mode

This one will work but the better way is to do it using find.

 ls -al | tr -s | cut -d -f6-7 | grep 'Jan 5'

But i dont know how ls will differentiate between Jan 5 2003 and Jan 5
 2004.

Strange i see something like this when i do a ls.

-rw-rw-r--1 vinu vinu0 Jun 12 2001 test1

-rw-r--r--1 vinu vinu 274468 Dec 28 05:57 test2

i.e for some files i see the year field and for some files i do not see
the year field and instead see a time field.

Why does ls behave like this?!

I like to know what is needed to work on a default installation on
RedHat8. Does root need to do some thing before normal user can start
working. Is there some default user or database created.

I know this may reply in google first. I did, but could not get
good link anyhow. May be my bad luck :-(

Check out the docs provided by postgres..It should be in
/usr/share/doc/postgresql-x-x, if you have installed the proper rpm...
Its very much comprehensive and should get you started with almost
everything...

Read the section on the privilige system..and after reading you know
know how to edit pg_hba.conf file to allow user based on passwords..

You need to create a new database to work on..Postgres does have some
database called template0 and template1..but this databases for internal
use by the postgres system to maintain its system tables.

postgres is the default user..you can create new users, database using
createuser, createdb binaries...Or issuing sql commands thru the psql
client interface.

The only problem being the yahoo file transfer and all did not

Try the Berlin project or a full fledged linux debian system with the

I don't know how well you can do non destructive resizing of your

and then resize the partition, but i don't know if its full proof.

Another method i can think of is: create a 10 GB (or whatever size you
want) partition for the root file system. Copy the existing root file
system to this new partition using
cp -ax / /newfilesystem
Update all your grub.conf and fstab file to point / as this new

Re: [LIH]LILO versus GRUB

2004-04-20 Thread G.Vinubalaji
 LILO
 * has no interactive command interface.
 * stores information about the location of the kernel or other operating
system it is to load on the MBR.
 * cannot read ext2 partitions.
 o.html)

 * Versions of LILO after 22.2 require nasm
 (http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/lfs/lfs-faq/lfs-faq.html#AEN134)

Personally i like grub. The shell is simple to use and even if the grub
installation fails for some reason i am landed in a shell through which
i could boot to something (No more seeing of L, LI, LIL error messages).
For installing new kernels, just editing grub.conf and reboot is easy
and saves one step and mbr is not written quite often (but I dont think
mbr can be made corrupt by just writing new values to it, its just a
sector in the hard disk).

I do use lilo on some machines, and i particularly like the -R option of
lilo. I dont think that grub supports this -R option.

Whats your partitioning scheme?
Do you have a separate boot partition?
I don't know how intelligently a distro can find the existence of the
same or any other linux distro and add the corresponding grub or lilo
entries.

But manually doing should be easy if you know the partitions and use
grub or lilo to load the different kernel and the different root file
system for different(or same) distro.

Send your partitioning scheme if you need assistance.

Since you have installed it on separate hard disks, you have each OS on

Do fdisk -l /dev/sdb
If sdb is your second scsi hard disk which has RF8.0 installed on it.
And include that partition in your grub.conf.
Read docs on grub. See /etc/grub.conf and understand and try to add the

Adding partition on one disk and seeing it another is strange. It cannot

[LIH]gaim proxy help

2004-06-24 Thread G.Vinubalaji
Hi all,
Have been trying this for a while. Googled a lot of times on this.
I want to use Gaim to connect using a proxy (with authentication). I did
some ethereal capture and see that Gaim uses the CONNECT method, which
our firewall (it has squid but it does not allow the CONNECT method)
blocks. We have a proxy with user authentication, and when some one uses
messenger on a windows machine, it works.

My question: Is there anything in gaim to make it work with squid
authentication, without using the CONNECT method or is there any other
IM client which can be used. I have tried ayttm, but that also does not
work and tried many but most of them use the CONNECT method.
