Unable to change voice settings

2013-07-30 Thread Fresco Sam-Sin
Dear all,

I somehow am unable to change the qualities of the voiceover. Everything is
read out really slow.
VO-Cmd used with arrows doesn't work. although the percentages are changed, the
voice still sounds the same. I tried to reinstall the voices, but I still keep
having the same issues. So, please help!

Best,

Fresco

Multilingual texts with VO

2013-07-30 Thread Fresco Sam-Sin
Dear all,

Another question, is there a way to deal with multilingual text using the
voiceover?
For work, I have to read multilingual texts (dutch, mandarin, english)- meaning
more languages within one document. Really could use some advice.

Best,

Fresco

Re: page wrap in pages

2013-07-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

Pages is not good for reading straight through a document. Sometimes it works
but most often it doesn't. If this is a document created in Pages, then I'd
just select all (Cmd-a), copy to clikpboard and paste into a TextEdit document
which will read straight through just fine.

I set a short cut for the Service New TextEdit Window Containing Selection. You
can do this by going to System Preferences/Keyboard/Short cuts and selecting
Services in the first table. You'll find this option under Text in the second
table. It's a very useful command in many situations.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: to anne r.RE: page wrap in pages

2013-07-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

TextEdit is a simplified word processor which is very useful, but it isn't a
professional tool.

Pages, on the other hand, is much more sophisticated and can produce all kinds
of professional documents.

Everyone has different requirements. I couldn't work as a professional
translator without Pages since MS Office isn't accessible. You can create
templates in Pages which is a useful feature. It's handy to have a template for
business letters, for instance. It can save a lot of time.

However, until you're really comfortable with VoiceOver, Pages is likely to be
more trouble than it's worth, and TextEdit is so easy to use.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Ian,

VO-Shift-backslash works to sort any column of a table, whether you're in
Finder or in iTunes. If you use it again, it will reverse the order of sort.
(On English language keyboards the backslash key is under the delete key.)
Remember to interact.

Cheers,

sure. Vo shift cabk slash will do you fine, so hit that, then hit space on the

shift back slash again to stop the process.

Can you change it via the voice over utility? vo f8? if not I don't know as
something might have gotten corrupted. Not sure though.

Good luck and hope that helps.

You can vo shift m on the attachment. you will see it as embedded something
where the something will be the name of the file. Then choose open. You can
also go to the headers area with vo left then interact and click the
attachments pop up button. I like the first way better though. lol!

Take care.

When VO reads 'embeded', move the mouse pointer to that spot, by pressing and
holding the VO keys, with Command and F5. Then, open the context menu [VO shift
and the letter m] and then use the arrow keys to get to save to downloads, you
can always move it from there. Anne told me how to do this, and it worked for
me, so good luck -

You can also go to file and then save all attachments and then save them on
your desk top as well. This for multiple attachments in an email and it's a
fast way to do just that.

Take care.

Reading tables in Safari

If I arrow down, VO announces ro 4, and the next down arrow will say row 7,

rows go with which columns. Are there any tricks/tips for working with tables

Re: Reading tables in Safari

2013-07-30 Thread Andy Collins
What adds to the difficulty in reading these tables, is that VO will say
column one, expanded across 5 rows. And then I arrow down, and I hear
different co-ordinates spoken, but there doesn't appear to be a pattern to it.
I was looking at some savings accounts that had fixed terms for investments,
and different rates of interest determined by the term, but I couldn't make
sense of which interest rate applied to which term etc, as I could only read
horizontally, and not vertically. so, is there a way of reading up and down as
well as right and left with VO? I know of course the up and down arrows can be
used, but half the time, reading using the up arrow is the same as using left
arrow, and down arrow does the same as using the right arrow. Puzzled, and need
a bit of help. Thanks -

RE: Reading tables in Safari

2013-07-30 Thread David Griffith
I think that probably what you may be experiencing is a non uniform table.
As far as I am aware voiceover does not announce a non unified table layout
to alert you to this problem.
The non unified table layout will have varying columns and row arrangements
throughout the table. Row one may have 3 columns and row 2 may have 6
columns for example.
So when coordinates are read outs as you move through the table this may
create a result which may not be easy to visualise without sight.
A solution may be to decrease Voiceover verbosity so that coordinates are
not read out which may make the table slightly more comprehensible.

Mac OS is generally pretty dreadful at handling tables but in this instance
Windows Screenreaders are little better though they will within documents
indicate if a table is non uniform. The solution generally on other
platforms is to copy the table off the web to a document format in which
the table can be edited so that it becomes a regular uniform table . This is
impossible to achieve in Mac Os Word Processors but may be possible in a
Numbers or tables Spreadsheet. As I never bother trying to handle tables
under Mac OS I will have to defer to other people's experience here as to
whether this is a feasible work around. It is definitely a job which it is
useful to have sighted support for. I used to use my DSA support for these
sorts of problematic tables.

David Griffith
Unfortunately on all platforms, I needed to use sighted support if I
wanted important table information..

Sounds about right I deal with tables all the time with safari and voice over.
Never on other platforms unless I have to, and I just visualize those as I had
to train myself how to do that because of a class lol! I guess all you can do
is just imagine the space the table takes up on a piece of paper or vertically
on a screen and imagine it expanding and shrinking to fi the table row and
column's need. That probably does not make sense but the 3 years I've been
using a mac this is what I've had to do and it works, but you will find your
own way of thinking of these tables.

Take care.

May I just point out that the MacBook Air doe snot have an Ethernet port.
The only kind of network interface is, therefore, WiFi and, if you possess
such a thing as a BlueTooth dongle or modem, you could do it that way.
Otherwise, the USB stick is the only way. Creating a boot image is very easy
but I guess it's only fair to say that the new user might find the process
daunting.

I would be happy to write an article for our blog on this if anybody thinks
it would be of help?

I've found Chrome with VO handles some tables better than Safari. In addition,

iSangean, An App Full Of Surprises

2013-07-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Last week I wrote a brief introduction to the Sangean WRF-28D Dab/FM/Internet
Radio, I've been playing with the set for a week now and here's my notes,
comments and observations.

This portable radio is thoroughly recommended as its feature packed and most
features people without vision can easily use through either the radio itself,
the iSangean App or through a web interface on a computer.

Yes, you will need sighted assistance to set the radio up and no, you can't set
alarms and you can't navigate through the menu system easily but those are
small verses.

The iSangean app allows near full remote control and interactivity with the
radio to the extent that you can read the information displayed from Internet
and DAB+ radio stations. For example, I tuned to the Sky Racing DAB+ channel
and was able to see that the next race at Warrick Farm was at 3:15 this
afternoon, tuning to the ABC News Radio DAB+ channel allowed me to view the
current weather forecast for Melbourne, When I tuned to ABC Radio National I
was able to read the currently airing programme and what was up next so we now
have - all be it in a round about way - an accessible DAB+ radio.

Using the App you can browse for Internet radio channels or search for what
you're looking for, you can then save that station to 1 of the 5 preset buttons
on the front of the radio or add it to your Favourites list.

The Favourites list can be accessed via the web where it can be added to,
edited and so on, the radio must be registered with the Radio Fronteer web site
so that the site recognises the radio, this is done by creating an account on
Radio Fronteer and then typing in a unique Access Code which is found in the
radios Help menu.

I will write a complete review of the radio shortly, when I've played with the
set more.
