Hi Sebastian,

matrices seem to work fine here (using beta tagged as 2016.04.01 13:01
[see my previous message to the list]).

If you allow me some suggestions, I think it may be worth considering
the following when dealing with betas:

1. Always give the beta version, otherwise it may be impossible in some
cases to know whether something behaves as expected or not.

2. Always backup your previous beta before upgrading it. New betas can
contain bugs or unexpected features and you may want to stick to your
old beta while things are fixed.

Just in case it helps,

Pablo

Thank you very much for your reply, Aditya.

I have seen \edef for years, but I didn’t know what it actually was.

Hi Mojca,

if this is related to the server problem, then this is fine for me. I

[NTG-context] wrong beta version number?

2016-04-10 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Hans,

I have just updated the latest version from the ConTeXt Suite and it
contains:

   \edef\contextversion{2016.04.01 13:01}

Is the version number wrong or does the Linux 32bit distribution have a
previous version?

Many thanks for your help,

Hi Sebastian,

I copied and pasted your code adding \starttext...\stoptext:

\starttext
\startformula
S=\left(\matrix{
  \sigma_x & \tau_{xy} & \tau_{xz} \cr
  \tau_{yx} & \sigma_y & \tau_{yz} \cr
\tau_{zx} & \tau_{zy} & \sigma_z \cr
}\right)_{xyz}
\stopformula

My guess is that the different results may be related to the OS.

I’m on Linux 32bit using luatex-0.90.0. As far as I know, Windows is
provided with luatex-0.95.0.

This might be the cause of the different results. But it is only my
guess. If this is the cause, you may have found a bug in luatex-0.95.0.

I hope it helps,

[NTG-context] defining a comamnd as variable which behaves as constant

2016-04-09 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

I have the following document:

\mainlanguage[es]
\starttext
\startTEXpage[offset=1em]
\dorecurse{27}%
{\def\abcd{\convertnumber{a}{\recurselevel}}%
\dorecurse{27}%
{\abcd\convertnumber{a}{\recurselevel} }\par}
\stopTEXpage
\stoptext

I want to test all lowercase-letter pairs in Spanish.

Excuse me for my missing programming notions. For the sample above, I
would need a command that behaves as a variable when defined, but as a
constant when invoked.

Is there any way to achieve that without using counters? Sorry if there
is too much nonsense in the previous paragraph. But I need to know how
to do it for another example too.

Many thanks for your help,

Jan,

here you have the minimal sample:

  \showgrid
  \starttext

  \completeindex

Comment the first line and colors background colors will disappear.

Don’t know whether it is a bug or not, but this is only related to
\showgrid.

Wolfgang,

I’m afraid that even with that, I’m afraid it doesn’t work well:

\definefallbackfamily[mainface][rm][Latin Modern Math]
[tf=file:newg8-regular, scale=0.88, range=0x22C0]
\definefallbackfamily[mainface][rm][Latin Greek Math]

\setupbodyfont[mainface]

\starttext

If another "key=value" pair is specified, "tf=file:newg8-regular"
doesn’t seem to work.

What am I doing wrong?

Even if the font is on the same directory as the ConTeXt source file? I

Sorry, this was outside the ConTeXt tree. And I didn’t know that it has

Many thanks for your fix, Hans.

After updating to latest beta (from yesterday), footnote links work fine
(not extensively checked yet).

My (ignorant guess) is that updating luatex from 0.89.0 to 0.89.2
contained the fix.

Also for the record, so that no good action leaves unpublished :-).

Just in case it helps, directly generated from

Wolfgang, this was my original sample:

\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]
\setupinteractionscreen[option=portrait]
\starttext
No duplex printing.
\page[right]
In this document.
\stoptext

The doublesided alternative disables duplex printing.

Hans wrote about portrait and landscape as directives. I guess they
should be invoked with \enabledirective, but I don’t know how.

I’m afraid I must be missing something. If I remove the first line from
the sample above, I don’t get the third page.

I’d say this is redundant. "portrait" is duplex printing flipping the
long side.

The issue comes from having one key for five values and also from mixing
viewing options with printer options (the PDF spec shelters them in the
viewer preferences dictionary).

In this case, doublesided sets layout "TwoColumnRight" (which is a
display setup) disabling also duplex and fixed printing (which are
printing setups).

As I proposed before (but Hans is busy with other issues), there should
be four different keys in \setupinteraction (when not moving them to a
new \setupprinting command):

duplex  page portrait landscape

fixed   (no value is required)

copies  number

pdfpapersizeyes no

I’d love to contribute the patch myself, but Lua is totally unknown to
me. I have tried to adapt lpdf-mis.lua, but this is beyond my knowledge.

So I will have to wait until the new keys are implemented :-(.

Many thanks for your help,

[NTG-context] issue with bookmark for sections

2016-04-21 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

\setuppapersize[A5]
\setupinteraction[state=start, focus=standard]
\startsetups[placelist:section]
  \start
\setupinterlinespace
[line=2.8ex]

\starttext
\completecontent
\dorecurse{5}{\chapter{Chapter \Romannumerals{\recurselevel}}
\dorecurse{10}{\section{Section}\input zapf\par\input knuth}
}
\stoptext

The setups are required to allow a different interline space in the list
of section items from the content lists.

But the issue I’m experiencing is that the bookmarks from the first
sections in each chapter have their destinations in the chapter and not
in its section titles.

Am I missing something or this is a bug in ConTeXt?

[NTG-context] bug in \definefallbackfamily?

would it be possible that the default values were yes in both cases?

Hi Jean-Pierre,

there is something weird with columns and the last paragraph.

Even using exactly the same text for both left and right columns (as
shown in https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2016/085544.html),
the paragraph on the left fits on the first page, but the paragraph on
the right doesn’t.

Well, if that isn’t a bug, I’d like to know what I’m missing there.

I agree with you that classical or ancient vs. modern are misleading

In my opinion, etymological or phonetic vs. syllabic should be preferred.

\doreverse? I guess it is \dorecurse.

What happens with the column balance can be explained by Hans.

It seems to be related to the linenotes on the right.

I addressed the issue in a separate thread
(https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2016/085544.html), but
Hans may be busy with other things.

\dorecurse only avoids copying the same text again and again.

Hi Robert,

the coma is the problematic character in url:

\setupinteraction[state=start]
\starttext
\goto{http://a,b.c}[url(http://a,b.c)]
\stoptext

I’m afraid this might be a bug.

I must be missing something, since columns aren’t balanced on pages 1,
4, 5, 7 and 8. The text for both columns is the same paragraph. Isn’t it
a bug?

BTW, is there any way to force that the text before or after a \column
command remains always on the same column?

Many thanks for your help,

Isn’t it possible that you install GFS Didot on that Windows system?

I’m not sure I get your point.

These are linenotes, not footnotes. References are to the line number,
not to a footnote number.

Is that what you meant?

I asked that after reading the following in lang-def.mkiv:

This is why I thought that both were synonyms.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

some remarks about your code:

1. The simplefonts module isn’t needed anymore. The code has been added
to the ConTeXt core.

2. The language code for ancient Greek is agr.

3. In this particular case, you may load the Latin patterns with the
Greek language.

4. You define a mainface using the Palatino typeface, but then you load
palatino. It only works when you load the mainface.

5. It is better when you use typefaces distributed with ConTeXt.

Well, my code doesn’t work well. Line numbers and notes are only allowed
on one column.

I know Hans will hate me ;-), but the fun comes when the recursion
exceeds the first page.

BTW, I guess this approach (as flawed as it is) should work, but I
should be missing something with columns.

It is beyond my understanding why the last Greek paragraph fits on the
first page and the lat Latin paragraph doesn’t fit.

Here is the code:

\setuplanguage[agr][patterns={agr, la}]

As far as I concerned, please consider that this would break backwards
compatibility.

Relative scaling is a feature that might pass unnoticed until it is to
late to fix anything. And this would be a problems for sources that have
this option already defined.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

I’m afraid that parallel texts is something it has to be improved in
ConTeXt, when Hans finds the time, the motivation... and a more or less
unified proposal.

So, you will have to wait until it is implemented (or simply improved).

[NTG-context] what does rscale=auto achieve?

2016-05-15 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

I have the following sample:

\definefallbackfamily
[mainface]
[rm]
[DejaVu Serif]
[preset=range:cyrillic, rscale=auto]

\definefallbackfamily
[mainface]
[rm]
[GFS Didot]
[preset=range:greek, rscale=auto]

\definefontfamily
[mainface]
[rm]
[TeX Gyre Termes]

\setupbodyfont[mainface]

\starttext
\startTEXpage[offset=1em]
аaα
\stopTEXpage
\stoptext

I thought that "rscale=auto" would scale the typeface so that its
x-height would match the x-height from the main typeface.

Since I don’t see any scaling, could anyone explain me what I’m missing?

Many thanks for your help,

In the meantime (so that you don’t get bored :-)), when would it be the
right time to remind you of a feature you told me some months ago?

Many thanks for your help,

[NTG-context] typesetbuffer in \insertpages

2016-05-01 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

I have the following sample,

\setuppapersize[A5][A4, landscape]
\setuparranging[2UP]
\setuplayout
  [backspace=0pt,
topspace=0pt,
   width=middle,
  height=middle,
location=middle,
  header=0pt,
  footer=0pt]
\startbuffer[hola]
\mainlanguage[es]
\starttext
\dorecurse{32}{\input cervantes-es\par}
\stoptext
\stopbuffer
\starttext
\typesetbuffer[hola]
%~ \insertpages[{\typesetbuffer[hola]}][width=Opt]
\stoptext

Is there any way to make the commented \insertpages command work?

Or is there any way to force the PDF file name in \typesetbuffer?

Many thanks for your help,

For future reference (and replying to myself), the solution may read:

\showgrid
\define[2]\chapterframe{\framed[frame=off, height={10em},
align=high]{#2}}
\setuphead[chapter][command={\chapterframe}]
\starttext
\chapter{Knuth}
\input knuth
\chapter{Zapf}

\chapter{Knuth\\\&\\Zapf}
\input zapf\par\input zapf
\stoptext

The code comes from the user that reported the issue at
https://github.com/ousia/context-critica/issues/1.

Just in case it may be useful to anyone,

The source includes a norepeat keyword that should disable repetition.

But I’m a afraid it doesn’t work:

\setupitemgroup[itemize][1][n, repeat]
\setupitemgroup[itemize][2][n, repeat]
\setupitemgroup[itemize][3][a, norepeat]

\starttext

This is our item list:

\startitemize

\startitemize

\stopitemize
\item ...  % 1.2
\startitemize
\item ...  % a
\item ...  % b
\stopitemize
\stopitemize
\item ...  % 2
\stopitemize

\stoptext

I may be missing something or there might be a bug here.

[NTG-context] issue with # in url

2016-05-08 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

\startbuffer[demo]

 Link not working:
http://a.b/c#d;>http://a.b/c#d
 Link not working:
http://a.b/c;>http://a.b/c#d
 Working link:

\stopbuffer

\startxmlsetups xml:initialize
 \xmlsetsetup{#1}{p|doc|a}{xml:*}
 \xmlsetsetup{\xmldocument}{span[@label]}{xml:logo}
\stopxmlsetups

\hyphenatedurl{#1}}[url(#1)]\egroup}%
\unexpanded\def\href#1#2{\goto{#2} [url(#1)]}

\xmlprocessbuffer{main}{demo}{}

\stoptext

Latest beta from 2016.05.08 17:30 doesn’t generate a clickable link with
the first two paragraphs. It seems to be caused by the presence of # in
the url.

The latest beta I have that generates three clickable links is
2016.01.14 09:55 (using LuaTeX-0.87.0).

From beta 2016.02.01 13:26 (and LuaTeX-0.88.0) the first two links
aren’t interactive. And this beta included a wrong rendering from # as
"\Ux {23}".

The wrong # conversion was corrected in beta from 2016.02.15 10:26 (and
LuaTeX-0.89.0), but links weren’t made interactive.

I hope the description helps. Could anyone confirm the issue?

Many thanks for your help,

excuse my top-posting.

I was really interested in this thread. But Dutch isn’t something in

My apologies for the comment, if the message was intended as private.

I’m eager to learn XML in ConTeXt, since the possibilities are less than

Sorry, Hans, I guess my question will be stupid, but why don’t use

I wouldn’t get it, even with a minimal sample, but xml-mkiv.pdf includes

[NTG-context] \setupalign (protrusion and expansion) in notes

\definefontfeature

[default]
[expansion=quality,
 protrusion=quality]

\setupalign
[hanging, hz]

\starttext
\input knuth\footnote{\input knuth}

Notes don’t inherit by default the \setupalign values.

Wouldn’t it make sense that they share the same align values than the
main text, unless other values are specified for notes?

Hans,

would it be possible that only Windows has the latest LuaTeX binary
(0.98.0)?

Linux 32bit has luatex-0.95 and I get wrong hyphenations.

I understand that they have to be a separate stream.

Of course, I didn’t mean a partial alignment should be inherited in the
notes. I meant the alignment properties for the whole document.

I don’t know whether it would make sense to add a key/value pair to
\setupalign, such as "notes=inherit".

My question is more an open one than a feature request. I don’t know
whether it might be useful (because there is a lot about text streams in
ConTeXt that I simply don’t know).

Many thanks for your help,

Setups are the way of doing it.

I thought it might be interesting that notes would inherit the setup

Hi Jan Willem,

are patterns for Brittish English better?

\starttext
\hyphenatedword{schematic, maintenance and integrated

\uk\hyphenatedword{schematic, maintenance and integrated

Sorry, but English hyphenation is too tricky for me.

Hi Henri,

why don’t you install ConTeXt Standalone? It is portable, so you may
install it in the same machine with TeX Live 2016.

(This is also why I asked you to test the Linux 32bit ConTeXt Standalone
with hyphenation.)

Create a new directory in in your /home/ directory and there you can
download and update the latest beta.

This won’t break your existing TL 2016 installation. And so you can have
the latest source and you may even use it.

I use the following commands:

cd /home/user/context-beta-directory/
rsync -ptv rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/setup/first-setup.sh .
./first-setup.sh --modules=all
cd && source /home/user/context-beta-directory/
mtxrunjit --generate

And you may start using it invoking:

source /home/user/context-beta-directory/tex/setuptex

(Sorry, if this was obvious to you. In that case, it hasn’t been obvious
to me that you knew it.)

Just in case it helps,

Hi Henri,

could you try the hyphenation with ConTeXt Standalone for 32bit?

The issue might be related to 32bit architecture.

Jean-Pierre,

I included it in the sample. Here you have it again:

\setupexternalfigure[location=default]

\definelayer[logo_layer][state=start]

\setlayer[logo_layer][preset=lefttop, y=.01\paperheight,
x=.82\paperwidth]{\externalfigure[spider][height=0.2\textwidth]}

\setupbackgrounds[page][background={logo_layer}]

\starttext

\dorecurse{5}{\input knuth\par}
\stoptext

Or is there any issue with the sample? At least, the spider should be
placed in the top right corner of the first page. To have it in all
pages, replace "state=start" with "state=repeat".

If this isn’t what you need, please let us know how the logo should be
placed.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

the default directory is tex/texmf-context/tex/context/sample/common
from ConTeXt Standalone.

If you have the file in the same directory than your text source file,
you don’t need any setup for the external figure.

To solve the issue (after fixing it, you might investigate it further),
please, copy the file Logo.svg to the same directory where you have your
ConTeXt source file.

Compile the document and it should work (provided that you have Inkscape
installed on your system).

Please, let us know whether this basic approach works.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

well, I think “ConTeXt supports SVG as image format” is a true
statement. It doesn’t support it natively and it needs an external tool
to convert SVG files. But this is a different question.

BTW, if your SVG files contain vectors, I think it is better to convert
them to PDF. Otherwise, vectors will be lost in PNG files.

Just in case it might help,

Dear Jean-Pierre,

we are happy to help, but samples should be minimal.

Otherwise, the sample should be fixed first (to have something to play

Do you want a different interline space in the second column?

You have to set it (see sample below).

\mainlanguage also selects the language for the document. The second
command isn’t required.

> % Normal A4 size paper

Well, this is the default paper size in ConTeXt. No need to select it.

> \setupcolors[state=start]

I’d say this is not required (at least, I had to stop colors to get rid
of them in one document).

> \definelayer[logo_layer]

[state=start] is to be added here (see
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Layers#State). Right after your closing
bracket.

And here you have a shorter sample:

\mainlanguage[fr]

\defineparagraphs[TwoColumns][n=2, align={hz,hanging}]
\setupparagraphs[TwoColumns][1][width=200pt]
\setupparagraphs[TwoColumns][2]
[style={\setupinterlinespace[line=5ex]}]

\setupexternalfigure[location=default]

\definelayer[logo_layer][state=start]

\setlayer[logo_layer][preset=lefttop, y=.01\paperheight,
x=.82\paperwidth]{\externalfigure[spider][height=0.2\textwidth]}

\setupbackgrounds[page][background={logo_layer}]

\starttext

\dorecurse{5}{\startTwoColumns

\input knuth

\TwoColumns

\input tufte
\stopTwoColumns}
\stoptext

Interline spacing is set in an unorthodox way (to put it fine), but
there is no "setups" key for \setupparagraphs (or it doesn’t work).

Let us know whether you find more issues.

I hope it helps,

[NTG-context] different default size when imposing documents

2016-07-12 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Hans,

after enabling image scaling in \insertpages
(https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2016/086114.html), I’m
afraid that the default value and compatibility in imposition is broken.

The minimal sample is the following:

\setuppapersize [A5][A4,landscape]
\setuparranging [2UP]
\setuplayout
  [backspace=0pt,
topspace=0pt,
   width=middle,
  height=middle,
location=middle,
  header=0pt,
  footer=0pt]
\setupinteraction[state=start]
\setupinteractionscreen[option={landscape, paper}]
\starttext
\insertpages[whichever-document.pdf][width=0pt]
\stoptext

Would it be possible to restore the width value to its previous default?

[NTG-context] (again) PDF info fields

2016-07-17 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Hans,

sorry for insisting in this issue. I may be missing consecuences or
requirements that make impossible its implementation.

I see two inconsistencies in the following output:

  \def\BookTitle{{\itd A \ConTeXt\ Book}}
  \def\BookAuthor{{\sc The Author}}
  \setupinteraction[state=start, title=\BookTitle, author=\BookAuthor]
  \enabledirectives[references.bookmarks.preroll]
  \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection]

  \starttext
  \chapter{\BookTitle}

  \section{\BookAuthor}

  \subsection{\ConTeXt\ is \TeX, but not \LaTeX}
  \stoptext

Would it be possible that PDF info fields can have their contents
prerolled as it happens with bookmarks?

In the bookmarks, \ConTeXt\ is rendered as ConTEXT. Since “The
TeXbook” only mentions \TeX and no \TEX, would it be possible to
preroll \TeX, \ConTeXt and \LaTeX as TeX, ConTeXt and LaTeX?

Hi Alan,

sorry, but this is only a another way of reaching the same result:

\setupinteraction[state=start]
\enabledirectives[references.bookmarks.preroll]
\placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection]

\setupdocument
[metadata:title={\documentvariable{title}}]

\startdocument
[title={\em Your title}]

\documentvariable{title}
\section{\documentvariable{title}}
\stopdocument

I need the expansion (prerolling, or whichever the name is), because the
real source is a more complex XML source and I need only the text, no
commands.

[NTG-context] prerrolling PDF fields

2016-07-04 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

\def\BookTitle{{\itd A \ConTeXt\ Book}}
\def\BookAuthor{{\sc The Author}}
\setupinteraction[state=start, title=\BookTitle, author=\BookAuthor]

Is there a way that I can preroll or expand the commands so that PDF
info fields have the same text as the bookmarks?

And another request, could \TeX (and others) be prerolled to TeX instead
of TEX? I think that there are two reasons in favor of this change:

1. From scrn-ini.mkvi:

   creator  {ConTeXt - \contextversion}%

2. The TeXbook includes \TeX, no \TEX.

Many thanks for your help,

Many thanks for the reply, Hans.

I understand it now and I can explain this to others.

Many thanks for your help,

[NTG-context] disabling page scaling

2016-07-04 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

I have the following sample:

\setupinteractionscreen[option={paper,page}]
\starttext
\ConTeXt\ is awesome!
\stoptext

The values for the option key should enable "/PickTrayByPDFSize true"
and "/Duplex /Simplex" in the PDF file. But I get an undesired
"/PrintScaling /None" (I need to reduce the document to printing margins.)

Checking lpdf-mis.lua, I see that there are two lists (or dictionaries,
maybe [the technical term is beyond my knowledge]) controlling the
printing options: pagespecs and plusspecs (both are local).

page, portrait, landscape and paper involve fixed in the pagespecs
dictionary. But these values don’t involve fixed in the plusspecs dictonary.

How can I invoke the plusspecs dictionary from ConTeXt, so I can get
duplex printing in the PDF file (or "/PickTrayByPDFSize true") without
having to disable page scaling?

Many thanks for your help,

[NTG-context] latest binaries for linux

2016-08-08 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear Luigi,

would it be possible to have version 0.98.0 binaries in the linux
(32bit) platform for ConTeXt Standalone?

This may fix a nasty bug with US English hyphenation.

Many thanks for your help,

Dear Mojca,

many thanks for your explanation on the administrativia for having
binaries in ConTeXt Standalone.

I will start a new thread requesting this.

Ok, if your binary doesn’t hyphenate (latest beta with luatex-0.95.0
hyphenates "wo-uld" [sic]):

\starttext
\hsize\zeropoint
would
\stoptext

it would be great to have an official release.

I mean, version 0.98.0 could be released in all platforms for ConTeXt
Standalone.

Many thanks for your help,

Hi Jose Luis,

I think your last command should read:

mtxrun --generate

I hope it helps,

[NTG-context] luatex-0.98.0 for linux?

2016-08-07 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear ConTeXt maintainers,

would it be possible that ConTeXt Standalone for the linux platform had
the latest LuaTeX binaries?

Besides the update, I think it is important to confirm whether English
hyphenation is fixed in the latest binary.

The following sample:

\starttext
\hyphenatedword{schematic}
\stoptext

outputs "sc-he-matic" with luatex-0.95.0.

Many thanks for your help,

Hi Jean-Pierre,

the issue with the font is fixed, but you had a footnote that didn’t
have the final } and this prevented compilation.

But the rest of the issues will be dealt in a private reply.

Cheers,

[NTG-context] issue with French patterns

2016-06-30 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Dear list,

I have the following sample:

\setuplanguage[fr][patterns={fr, agr}]
\mainlanguage[fr]
\setupbodyfont[dejavu]
\starttext
\hyphenatedword{χαλεπά éligibilité}
\stoptext

I cannot compile it with latest beta (or with stable from 2015.05.18 12:26).

The error message reads:

error on line 2 in file a.tex: ! Conflicting pattern ignored

Is this a bug or is there no way to load French and ancient Greek
hyphenation patterns?

Many thanks for your help,

Hi Jean-Pierre,

you have to define a sans font after the serif font, such as in:

  \definefontfamily [mainface] [sans] [GFS Neohellenic]

BTW, latest beta versions require force=yes in \definefallbackfamily.

Just out of curiosity, do you plan to post the resulting PDF file online?

I hope it helps,

Re: [NTG-context] Strange problem with Blockquote

2016-08-16 Thread Pablo Rodriguez
Hi Robert,

from what I get from your message, there is only one blockquote in the
introduction.

How about adding the following code before \starttext?

\startsectionblockenvironment[frontpart]
\setupinterlinespace[small] % or whichever value you want
\stopsectionblockenvironment

I think it might work. I hope it helps,

Pablo
