Hi Dan,

Is there a specific number to call in order to speak with Verizon regarding
Mobile Speak? Also, does anyone know if there are non-qwerty phones
supporting mobile speak on Verizon's network?

Thanks to all for this discussion; it's been a help. I have ordered my DM-520

tit? Maybe a podcast on ACB Radio or something. I downloaded the manual but
the graphics aren't described very well. It's a PDF file and it doesn't allow
you to save it as text--i guess that wouldn't make the graphics any better.

I'm looking for something that has good to great recording quality, easy to

Someone did say the olympus was better for recording quickly or on-the-spot.

Another choice that people may wish to consider is the Sony PCMD50, you'll hear
a review of it on http://www.blindcooltech.com though you may have to look for
it in the archives.

One of the features I really liked about this model was the system it had for
protection against the sound clipping if the level got too high.

Would either of the other programs mentioned be able to play

Extractor and use it to extract the audio from the .flv
files?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

the best solution for CD burning is Exact Audio Copy. It can rip in
both the lossless flac format which offers CD quality sound or in MP3.
Flac is supported on both the Victor Stream and Booksense. There's a
learning curve with EAC for a newbie, but hearing classic jazz
recordings digitally remastered using the drive offsets in EAC has
made me feel like I was right in the ballrooms and clubs where the
recordings were made. ITunes or anything else at this point still
can't light a candle to EAC for quality.

I'm starting from ground zero insofar as this kind of thing is
 concerned.
At some point, I would like to put some of my records and cassettes
 onto the
PC and I'd also like to be able to manipulate the recordings I've got
 on my
dm520; I'm sure there are other audio tasks, oh yes, ripping cd's to
 a more
 useable format as well.

I'm thinking if I got both Goldwave and Total Recorder I should be set.

Is this correct or will both of them do the same thing; I do not wish
 to be
 redundant.

 Thoughts are appreciated.

Victor Reader Stream or Book Cents

2009-12-23 Thread Denny Daughters
Hello guys,
I've listened to reviews on both the book cents and victor stream. What
kinds of things should I consider when looking at getting either one or the
other? I want to be able to play NLS, Recording For the Blind books and MP3s
among other things. The book cents is getting the RFB and D Support. What
other things should I consider when looking at these 2 machines? How is the
response time between the 2? Any problems with the 2 machines? Can you record
in wave format and stereo? What's the speed compression like?? Can you speed up
music and books on both machines if you want? Thank you guys for any feedback.

victor Reader Stream V Book Sense

2009-12-23 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

Okay, I don't have a Book Sense but I do have a Victor reader Stream.

One thing I like about the Stream is that all prompts and messages are
recorded in human voice rather than having to rely on a software voice
synthesiser so you won't miss any alerts, prompts or errors which Victor
is trying to communicate to you.

I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor
coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your
recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to a
PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major gripe
about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a Mac most
of the time and there's no way of converting files from the Victor's
format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix the problem.

The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its
incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested
to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only hope
that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're prepared
to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be solved by
purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the manual first
so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how to arrange
things etc.

I would like to see some sort of voice database feature in these

say link a telephone number with an address or a name, I should think
that such a feature would be handy for elderly people who could use
these type of machines - not just for playing books - but as a type of
information manager for basic information, The Victor Reader for example
uses LINUX as its operating system so there's no question about the
power the player has, its just a question of how to design such a system
I outlined.

Dane,

With a card reader and the Companion software, I think transferring
files to the VRS is quite easy. I use a PC, so that's probably why
it is so, as I'm not sure if the Companion software works on a mac.

I also like the human voice prompts. However, the synthesized voices

much. Thank god for Text Aloud.

That's exactly my point, you're using the software to do all the
transfer and you shouldn't have to do that, you shouldn't have to use
software to convert the audio format to something standard either and -
most of all - you shouldn't have to purchase a memory card reader
because of the slow transfer speed of the Victor Reader Streams USB port.

Hello guys,
I've listened to reviews on both the book cents and victor stream.
What kinds of things should I consider when looking at getting either one
or the other? I want to be able to play NLS, Recording For the Blind books
and MP3s among other things. The book cents is getting the RFB and D
Support. What other things should I consider when looking at these 2

machines? Can you record in wave format and stereo? What's the speed
compression like?? Can you speed up music and books on both machines if
you want? Thank you guys for any feedback.

I would like to see some sort of voice database feature in these devices,
some way whereby you could link notes or recordings together, say link a
telephone number with an address or a name, I should think that such a
feature would be handy for elderly people who could use these type of
machines - not just for playing books - but as a type of information
manager for basic information, The Victor Reader for example uses LINUX
as its operating system so there's no question about the power the player
has, its just a question of how to design such a system I outlined.

Hi!

Okay, I don't have a Book Sense but I do have a Victor reader Stream.

One thing I like about the Stream is that all prompts and messages are
recorded in human voice rather than having to rely on a software voice
synthesiser so you won't miss any alerts, prompts or errors which
Victor is trying to communicate to you.

I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor
coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your
recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to
a PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major gripe
about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a Mac
most of the time and there's no way of converting files from the
Victor's format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix the
problem.

The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its
incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested
to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only
hope that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're
prepared to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be
solved by purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the
manual first so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how to
arrange things etc.

Re: victor Reader Stream V Book Sense

2009-12-23 Thread covici
I have never even used the VR's native transfer. I got a card reader
and its not hard to just copy the files on the card. They have software
to do this as well, but I never felt the need for such software.

The stream already plays mp3,ogg and I think wma, but am not sure of the
wma. I never used it, but I am pretty sure it plays wav as well.
