Re: Airfoil Speakers For Android App
Hi all I like AIrfoil a lot and one day might try it using Apple TV to transmit the stream from my Mac running AIrfoil. Ah, so the white noise is mixed in with the stream then. The overlaid got a little confusing for me, meaning it will either modulate or somehow corrupt the stream so that it's garbled to say the least. For the benefit of the hard of hearing, is the white noise loud enough to be a motivation to rush to your device(s) and stop the stream quickly? Sorry if this may sound stupid, but in case time gets the best of me and the ten minutes has way, way past. I did pay for Airfoil 3 a while back, but I think will pay again to upgrade to 4, but not without trying it with Apple TV first. Anyway thanks for any responses on this. On 1 Jun 2015, at 20:00, Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net wrote: Hi! I just installed this App on my Samsung Note4 and it works very well though not quite in the way I expected it to. Airfoil Speakers is an App that receives streaming from a device running Airfoil, this can be a Mac or a Windows machine. Airfoil hijacks an App on your computer or another audio source such as a line-in, microphone, DVD playing, output from your web browser and so on, the audio then is streamed to be received by an AirPlay device or - in this case - Airfoil Speakers For Android. No setup is required, just install and launch the airfoil Speakers App which is then ready to receive a stream from Airfoil, your device will pop up in the list of devices that Airfoil can stream to. So what was unexpected about the Android version of Airfoil Speakers? Other versions of the App I've used - for Mac, Windows and IOS - have allowed the streaming of iTunes or any other device that can stream to an Airplay compatible device or App to stream to Airfoil speakers, the version for Android will only accept a stream from Airfoil itself, I'm curious to know why and I've written to the developer so I hope I'll get an explanation. Anyway worth the $8 from Google Play, you can get a demo version to try, after ten minutes you'll hear white noise mixed in with your received stream. -- ** Those who need help are those who are prepared to help themselves

Hi all, Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this message. I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So, the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones etc? Mary

New bluetooth speakers
Hi all, Today I received my belated Christmas present from friend and list member Hannah Day, stereo bluetooth speakers by Gear 4. It is very small but has excellent bass. It is also completely accessible. When you switch it on via a small switch on the side it emits a chime and is immediately in pairing mode. Once connected, both VoiceOver and audio output in general comes through the speakers. Also guess what? We were surprised to discover it can also be used as a speakerphone. We assume one can talk to Siri as well as make and receive calls via the speaker. If you know any better please let us know as we are curious. Thanks! Charging is done via the USB port at the bottom of the unit. There are also push buttons on the unit but not sure what they do. Battery life is about five hours and the unit also supports line in meaning you can use these on any device that do not support bluetooth or you simply do not wish to use it.

Hi all Received this radio today from www.argos.co.uk it's a DAB/FM digital radio system. The product is quite accessible even without speech. Once you know the basics like adjusting the volume and selecting a station it's a piece of cake. Of course changing settings, retuning or resetting to factory defaults may need sighted assistance, as well as the advanced functions of the radio. One cool feature that may or may not be usable by us is the ability to pause and rewind live radio, as well as record programs for later listening. The programs are stored in its in-built memory. There is a USB port located on the side but it's only used to update the firmware from what I gather when downloading the PDF manual a few days ago which, by the way, should be accessible with your favourite reader, there is also an auxiliary input port so you can connect your iPod or other MP3 player. Cost £84.99.
Re: Tapin Radio
Hmmm I'm surprised you didn't get much out of it with Nvda. I have been using it with Nvda for a while and they work great together. In the help menu, about dialogue box you can install a small add-on for Nvda which adds a program specific keystroke, Nvda-control-t, to speak the stream. On 16/11/2014 20:59, Dane Trethowan wrote: Okay, been playing with this for the last few minutes and I make the following observations. Firstly I had to use the software with JAWS, couldn't get much out of it with NVDA. Second, it seems that the database hasn't been updated for some time, I can of course only go on what I see in my country of Australia as that's the only place I've looked thus far. I estimate that the database is over 4 years old as there are many stations which were boradcasting 4 years ago listed here. Many of the stations referred to in Australia are not streaming now due to royalty issues which still needed to be sorted in the Australian courts so - if you hear nothing on a stream - then don't be surprised. I guess that's the disadvantage of having an App like this use its own database, you have to be pretty dedicated to keep that database up to date. Perhaps the developer has good reasons for ding this, I don't know what sort of fee the Vtuner database of Internet radio stations and Podcast would charge any developer for access, I know that a lot of the products I have here from Sangean, Denon, Yamaha and Pioneer use it for their Internet Radio data but then again these company's have pockets filled with cash compared to an individual software developer. Apart from all that I was most impressed with the layout of the software so I sincerely hope that we'll see more udpates to Tapin Radio in the future.
Re: Decibel from sbooth.org
Cool man! Going to check this out. I have VLC but there's something annoying about it. I have a randomized playlist because that's who I am smile. Unlike Winamp for the other platform I cannot search for a file and the results appear in a separate list. Sure you can search the playlist made but the table still shows the entire list. I'm not asking for help here; just going to see if this Decibel can do this for us. On 10/11/2014 12:11, Hamit Campos wrote: Man, the mac always gets cooler stuff. Re: Decibel from sbooth.org
Ok all I like the app, but it's very slow at adding my tracks to a playlist. Mine is a large one, over 7,000 in total. VLC however adds them instantly and are available immediately. With Decibel I have to wait at least two minutes otherwise I will be told that the app is busy. This may be no big deal for some but is for others like me. So for now I'll just use the trial till it runs out then go back to VLC. Options are good though smile. Don’t get me wrong, VLC is still a nifty player but just doesn’t have the audiophile features that decibel does though perhaps you could add those to VLC through plugins? I've not played with Skype for IOS but do intend to in the coming days as I'm interested to see whether Skype will handle such devices as the Yamaha MPX100 as well as FaceTime obviously does,. And finally, both of us in our chat were using hands free devices, me the aforementioned Yamaha device and the other party used their iPHone in Hands free mode, we both commented just how clear the whole thing was and how we wouldn't have known that we were both using hands free systems. Moving email address
Hi all I am going to move email addresses for this list, I am happy with Gmail but going to use that for only personal mail and maybe one or two lists, the rest will be transferred to Apple's own iCloud Mail account, it's just brilliant and finally I can receive my own messages from lists rather than receive a copy which is the case with Gmail if set up correctly. Also with iCloud Mail my mail will be truly organized as whatever I do on the PC will also be reflected on my mac and all my iOS devices where iCloud Mail is set up. Again I'm quite happy with Gmail but want to use it for the above only and use iCloud Mail for the rest. So moderators if you see unsubscription/subscription notifications from me that is why. Bye for now and see you in iCloud Mail land! -- Christopher Hallsworth Student at the Hadley School for the Blind www.hadley.edu
Re: Burnaware free question
Amazing. I tried to help the Burnaware support team to make the new version accessible. After a couple of contacts I heard nothing so thought nothing about it and they fixed any accessibility bugs at their end. This doesn't appear to be the case. Such a shame. You are but it is a limmitation of the free account for Spotify. You need to either pay premium or if you have an iPad get the iPad app. You can then enjoy all the benefits of premium with the inclusion of ads every few songs. Update on Burnaware 7
Hello everyone. Here is what I received from Burnaware support regarding version 7. It appears they will listen to feedback from the blind community. Thank you for comment. Ribbon in BurnAware can be used with hot keys (they listed in Help File). Except the Main Window, but this will be improved in next release. I'll try NVDA and think how to resolve this problem.
