Yes, you just hold down one button and record away. As much as you like.
Then when you go back later and hold the pen over the glue on sticker it
reads back whatever you recorded.

Re: marking memory sticks

2014-01-31 Thread tickpub
O wow, what I did was get one of those speaking marking pens. What you do
is stick a tiny round sticker onto the flash drive, hold the pen on it
and record whatever needs to identify what is on the flash or ? You can
put the size of the flash, space left and a list of files that can be
then read later.
I have at least 20 flash drives with all kinds of things on them and now
I just take that reading pen and touch the round button sticker and it
tells me exactly what I put onto the recording which is what is inside
the drive.
That was my work around method!

I think it is called the Pen Friend. Get hold of your local Commision for
the blind and ask them, they might give you one free. The cost is about
$150 I think?
They are great for all kinds of little things. I use mine for a list of
phone numbers. Instead of having to turn on my computer to look up a
number, i just click the dot and the list that I recorded is read to me.
I also list all my kids birthdays and special dates onto a tag, the tag
goes onto the frig and when I want to remember a birdthday of someone I
just let the pen read what I have recorded. I have also listed all my
CD's and flash drives. You can put as much material onto a recording as
you want. I played around with my wife and put a dot onto her forhead and
made suggestions of her IQ and her love for me...? ...Ha!

You can use it anywhere, on luggage or even in books for notes.
On TV for remembering what station plays what or when?
On Clothes, shoes, canned goods, stuff you put into freezer and more...

Been there done that, not fun. I used one unit that I bought from Fry's
or Fries electronics for under a $100. It is an actual casette unit
player with all the goodies to make it work. I found it to be the best so
far. I use Adacity with it and it does well. I tried at least two other
inexpensive items that did not work and as you so say, were not worth the
cost of the box they came in.
I'm sorry that I do not know the name of this unit as of now, I am in the
middle of changing computers. But call a good computer or electrics
outlet and ask about this unit.

Grace digital audio player from Fry's It came with Adacity the free
program but this is the upgrded one I guess.
you need a trnsfer cable, which I think comes with the device. You put
your tape in, hit a hot key on adacity or whtever program you choose to
use and then hit a button on the device and it copies it as an me3 gfile.
It took me a bit of time to figure it all out but once I did, it worked
well and still does.

I gave up on all those tricky switches and just went to Fry's and bought
a casset player that does it all. You just put in the tape, press the
right buttons an your tape plays and is saved on PC. You use the adocity
program to do the work. It was about $70 but i had at least 300 tapes to
transfer.
I guess you can do this with programs and a recorder but it was easier
for me this way.

I have used about 10 different TTS programs. Never heard of the weather
one but will look for it. I settled on TEXT ALOUD! I run jaws 7 with

strokes but it does a good job. The other one I use to use was Dspeach.
it was pretty good but one day stopped working.
There was a recent article on or from Flying Blind with a link to ? Gismo
where they tested at least 10 or more different TTS programs. Some were
free but TA was not mentioned. I so far am sticking with TA, it does a
great search in my longer documents. I also have about 15 voices I use to
switch around, like Daniel the best, he does a good job in pronouncing
difficult words. If there are better voices out there that will not break

through Adacity then you'll own a nice casset tape player and could then

little more you can own your own devices.

it adjusts the noises but not the speed. I am blind and have not yet read

Ok, Text To Speach Program TA how do I convert Text Aloud files from text to mp3?

2011-10-18 Thread tickpub
Hi all good people out there. I have downloaded the trial version of TA
(Textaloud) and I cannot find an easy way by menu to just convert my
edited text to an mp3 file. I am legally blind and pretty well can get
around by spoken menues but in the file menu there is no convert to wav
or mp3 button. Can anyone help me on this. I have written TA tech but
they won't be back for a few days.
Thank you and all the best!

Re: Need a good TTS program!

2011-10-11 Thread tickpub
Bob, I have used D-Speech for several years now. I actually created a POD
cast for its use a year or so back. But now, it somehow will not allow me
to save and change a file or article into a wav or mp3 file. I can save
as a txt but not a mp3 or wave. It gives me aabort screen and the program
hangs there. I really liked Dspeech, it was so easy to use and it did
everything I wanted it to do. I have tried everything I know but still no
go. Somehow there might be a driver or some other file killing off the
Dsppech one? Just don't know but wish I could get it working again.
Do you have any ideas. I reloaded it twice now but still no go!

Ok, will do as soon as I get the time. Thanks for your help and ideas.
The only thing that does not work is that the conversion process is
intrupted with a screen saying ABORT! When I try to get rid of this note
it then tells me that this program is not responding!
I've tried everything I could think of, so for; but my thinker does not
do well these days, ageing you know!

Need a good TTS program!

2011-10-09 Thread tickpub
Thank You, I am looking for a really good Text to Speech Program! I use
to use Speech but it has somehow stopped working for me. I also have an
older version of Text-Aloud. I am looking for a TTS program that is user
friendly to the blind. I already have about 12 various voices. I could
upgrade to TA but is there anything better out there? I also have the
Ivona program but it is not very friendly to the partially sighted. So,
is there something that works so I can use inflections, pauses, emphases
and voice pitch changes?
I need a good one for stories and personal writings.

Hi back; to begin with, their entire site is very unfriendly. I have
contacted them several times and as you thought, they do not seem to sell
to individuals. I also like their voices and have even looked for cracked
copies but no go so far. But they might not be compatable with sappi.
They really do a bad job with their PR! It is an Italian company and
maybe that is the reason...Noodle Brains! I gave up on them about six
months ago. I do get their news letters and have been watching for their
sales to us common folks. If you do find anything out, please post it for

Re: Dspeech and save as mp3.

2011-01-31 Thread tickpub
Not tototally sure here but first save your document or work as a txt
file. This assures that you have your work on Dspeach saved. Then make
all your changes and save again. Then to convert your work into a wav
file, you use the File menu and go down to convert to wav or ? file. hit
enter and this will give you a choice and save as wav. Now once you have
your work saved as a wav file or a text file you can right click that
file name and your content menu should offer you a convert to MP3 line
and if all goes well just hit enter and your wave file will then convert
to an mp3. I have no idea of your system and I have not used dspeach in a
year or so, but it works something like that. It use to work great for me
but because I have added a bunch of other programs, something got thrown
out of wak and I just don't have time to mess with it any lnger.
Good lucks!

I think you might try radio.com and there is a good one called mikes or
mike raido or something like that, but you can listen to any station in
the world at any time. You can set it to play commedy or news or whatever
but it worked well for me. I only listen to one station and that is
commedy radio. Sorry I do not have the time to look up the exact names.

 Jason,

Assuming you have the current version of the firmware, hold down the
 play
button for several seconds. The player will speak. You can then
 switch
between books by pressing the left and right arrows either side of
 the play
button. When you hear the title you're looking for, press play as
 you
normally would (not for several seconds) either once or twice and it
 will
 start.

  Hi,

You need to be careful buying ATT phones if you want to continue
 to use
talks. Locked phones can sometimes prohibit the installation of
 3rd party

  applications.

Your best bet is to purchase an unlocked phone then insert your
 sym card
  into it!

Of course, you will need to transfer your talks lisence to the
 new
 phones's
  EMEI for a cost.
Another thing you can try is to contact ATT and see if they still
 offer
 an
accessible phone which is a contract phone with talks installed.
 They
 used
to do this with the Nokia 6682 but that is an older phone and may
 in fact
 be
  the one you are using.

Nokia phones come in many form factors i.e. slider, candy bar,
 flip etc.

The N82 is a very popular slider phone and works well with talks.
 You can

also pick up an N95-3 which is also a slider phone with loads of
 features
  including 3g connectivity.

It really depends on what you want the phone to do.

Good candy bar phones that work well with talks are the N73, N79
 and E51
 and
  E71.

Don't grab the E71X from ATT as it is locked and I have heard
 that users
are having issues installing talks on it.

  Subject: cell phone recommendations, anyone?

  Hi listers,

I hope that this is not off topic for this list, but my
 cell
phone died after four years and I'll need to replace it. Its so
 old
that at the att store here in the sticks of Gardner Mass, they
 told
me that they no longer could replace the battery a year ago when
 I
first started having problems. I got a new battery on the
 internet,
at ebay, and thusly extended the phone's life for quite
cheaply. However, now I think its about time to get a new one.

So, I am an a t and t customer. What would be a good
 phone
to get. I've been using the talks software, but, I think that is
 not
transferrable. Who can help. I thought I'd never get a cell
 phone
millenia ago, but having done so, now I can't live without one.
 I
don't think I want to pay for data plans and all, but, what works
 as
a solution these days. Thanks, in advance, for any ideas!

Ok, I use the Olympus 40, the only difference is in the capacity. But,
the speaker works fine for me and I am sure that there might be an
improvement on the 50.
My ears ain't all that good now days but the sound quality is good. I
listen to music and to many articles, you can turn it up pretty loud. I
lay it down about two foot from me on a counter next to my work and just
let it play. It does well for this an sounds like it is something you
can work with very nicely.

My opinion on Olympus WS-210S digital recorder

2009-01-08 Thread tickpub
Ok, hey, if your going to spend your money on an older Olympus 210? and
be limited why not wait a time and invest in the better Olympus 50 or
higher. I use the 40 and it is great, but wished I would have waited
andgot the 50 because of storage space. For I do a lot of recording and
carry around a good amount of audio files and so fort. So forget the 210
and move up and you won't be unhappy!

I think there is a POD cast on BCT site on the Dspeech. But you
 can do
it two ways. from your text editor, copy your document and paste
 it into
the Dspeech editor. To do this just click AlrF for the file menu
 and hit
new and that will clear anything and bring a new editing field up.
  Just
paste your copy there and use the tab key to move around
 in the
keys. You can go through the menues and find the key help list and
 there
it tells you which keys to use to do what?
If you have the sappi voices from JAWS, you can use anyone of
 these on
the fly. The main work keys are the F keys.

You can also insert a document by hitting CTRO for open and tab
 down to
get to the folder and file you want to enter, hit enter and that
 file
will load. Work it over, sometimes you need to arrange the commas
 and so
fort to make it bread better. To convert it to an MP3 you open the
 file
menue and go down to convert to audio and there you will be given
 two
choices. Just tab to the MP3 and hit enter a but first make sure
 you save
it to your file of choice.
Listen to the POD cast, it gives more detail.

Sorry, but it works just perfect for me. You don't download the POD cast,
you listen to it on site. It is one of the most well used sites that
the blind use, it shold work without any problems. Maybe ask the list
what to do, I'm out of suggestions!

I think there is a POD cast on BCT site on the Dspeech. But
 you
  can do
it two ways. from your text editor, copy your document and
 paste
  it into
the Dspeech editor. To do this just click AlrF for the file
 menu
  and hit
new and that will clear anything and bring a new editing field
 up.
   Just
paste your copy there and use the tab key to move
 around
  in the
keys. You can go through the menues and find the key help list
 and
  there
it tells you which keys to use to do what?
If you have the sappi voices from JAWS, you can use anyone of
  these on
the fly. The main work keys are the F keys.

You can also insert a document by hitting CTRO for open and
 tab
  down to
get to the folder and file you want to enter, hit enter and
 that
  file
will load. Work it over, sometimes you need to arrange the
 commas
  and so
fort to make it bread better. To convert it to an MP3 you open
 the
  file
menue and go down to convert to audio and there you will be
 given
  two
choices. Just tab to the MP3 and hit enter a but first make
 sure
  you save
it to your file of choice.
Listen to the POD cast, it gives more detail.

Dspeech. It is easy to use and handles all sappi voices and it works very

I can't remember how I did it but for me, if I did it, then anyone can
but I know it is a stan alone program. That means it does not get into
your regeristry. So, from what I know you just download it to your rive
where you keep your programs, C:\ or ? and just click on it and it shold
then open. I think it sets up a shortcut key on your desktop, can't
remember but it is just an .exe or X file so it should open right up.
You can email the guy from his site and ask but I think it should be very
simple.
Once it is in your drive, locate it and right click on it an see what it
tells you there.
Sorry I cannot tell you more.

I don't completely understand the function and purpose of these
 files.
When I have wished to download audio files from such places as ACB
Radio's Main Menu and other sources I have not been able to retrieve
 an
actual file, even with the save as option. It's my understanding
 that
each time I access a link with this extension the computer is
 connecting
to the server where the files are stored. I ask myself what would
happen if I wanted to access a file which has been removed. Would
 I
need to capture the material with Replay or Total Recorder, or is
 there
a way to retrieve and store the actual data on my own hard drive?
I haven't looked at the new Main Menu site, but even if files can
 be
directly retrieved from there I would like a more complete
 explanation
of .m3u files. Are these play lists?

 Thanks as always in advance.

Re: Creative zen 16GB drive

2008-08-09 Thread tickpub
Hi, I do not know much about this particular zenstone device but as far
as the others, if it works like my zen, you just plug it in and with
windows it shold appear in the my com folder. Just click on the zen
folder device and it shold open. You simply begin copying the files from
your audio files wherever they are and go over to the zen and paste them,
it should be that simple.
MMM that is all I know, if it gets more complicated than that, maybe an
expert can tell you more.

Re: Fw: the overlooked MP3 player

2008-07-28 Thread tickpub
Hi, just ordered it, but missed the sale. But wanted to try it, I like
the battery idea, when i go camping, I do not have a way to charge the
zin.
I like the idea of a speaker and now the zin has one, but you still got
to charge it by com.
Hope it comes with cables, does it?
Is this buy com reliable?

I've seen a few people who have put together guides to accessible
 MP3
players, and they all tend to overlook this one. I don't know why,
 because
it's just as screeneless, reasonably priced, and it's a rather
 unique piece.
This is the Sansa Shaker by Sandisk. I got a deal on it from
 www.buy.com
in May when the red 1 GB model was on sale for about 20 bucks with
 free
shipping. If you want to skip my description and see the official
 one by
 Sandisk, use this here link
 http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1253
 otherwise, you can read ahead.

So, this thing may be overlooked because it is marketted towards
 kids. But I
think if you are a gizmo nut like me, you just won't care and will
 find it
fun to use. It comes in various colors and you can get it with
 either 512
megs of storage or 1 GB, and I think you can also use a 2 GB SD card
 in the
1 gig model. Oh, that's right! This is a player that has no on-board
 memory,
but will store your stuff on standard SD cards.
First, what's it look like. Again, for you gizmo fans, you'll like
 the
shape. It's pretty much a cylinder with a flat top and bottom and
 it's
thinner in the middle than it is toward the ends. I suppose it's
 what you'd
call an hourglass shape. I call it my salt shaker because it also
 looks like
a high-tech salt shaker. The controls are way way easy to use.
 First, on top
there's a small speaker, and although the sound is strong and not
 extremely
shrill, the fidelity is limitted, probably best for voice
 recordings. There
is one button which is flush with the rest of the unit, and that's
 more
towards the bottom. This is your power and your play/pause button.
 There are
two standard mini headphone jacks on it so two people can listen at
 once if
you like. Finally, there is a band at the top for adjusting volume
 and a
band at the bottom for skipping tracks forward or back. You just
 grip the
band and twist it one way or the other to perform a function, and
 let go
once you have things the way you want them, since they spring back
 when
you're done. It is called the Shaker because you can also skip
 tracks by
pressing and holding the Power/Play button while your track is
 playing and
give it a vigorous shake up and down. You'll hear a camera shutter
 noise and
it will skip tracks. I'm not sure if you can control in which
 direction
it'll skip this way, so it may be a sort of randomizer.
It's powered by a single AAA battery, and the website claims that
 will last
ten hours while you are under headphones. The battery and the SD
 card as
well as the port for the USB cable that comes with it are located
 under a
twist-off cover on the bottom of the unit. You do not need special
 software
to transfer files, so you can just use Windows Explorer to copy and
 paste
from one location to the player. I believe it will only play MP3 and
 .wav
files, and it comes with a small folder of sample MP3 files. I find
 that it
will not play some MP3 files, but not sure what exactly it's picky
 about.
But I'm pretty sure it'll play most MP3 files. It does not avhe any
 resume
capabilities, so when you shut the player off and turn it on later,
 you are
at the beginning of the file you were listening to.
I actually use mine to play books on, even though the books are on
 MP3 CD as
well. I can just use its little speaker and play my book while doing
 stuff
in the kitchen or whatever. It's a nice little player, and it seems
 to do
what it does well. Yes, I still think the Zen Stone is the most
 versatile
off-the-shelf player, but this one is good if you want to either
 store
things on multiple SD cards or you just want a groovy-looking gizmo
 to play
your files on. It's worth a look if you just want something to play
 your MP3
 files on.

Please feel free to share this review wherever you'd like, as I
 don't think
too many folks know about this one. Also, you can send it to anyone
 you know
who might be putting together a guide for off-the-shelf players.

Re: XP-home to XP-pro, jaws 8 upgrade?

2008-06-24 Thread tickpub
Thank you, I like xp-home just fine but I wanted to get a used laptop and
they all come with xp-pro and they want an extra $100 to install xp-home.
I have a Del Desktop but they sent it without disks and I cannot copy the
xp-hoe onto any other of my coms.
Plus, it would have cost me at least a $1000 to upgrade all my programs
to xp-pro, so that is why I was inquiring if there was some kind of a
adaption.
Thank you,

The program is free. You just download it from

  There are no
special installation options for screen reader users and it doesn't
mess up any of your settings.

For JAWS users, to run the program following installation:

 1. Launch the program.

 2. Shift-tab to the combo box of countries.

 3. Down arrow to the country you want.

 4. Tab once to the list of TV stations in that country.

 5. Down arrow to the station you want and press enter. Wait 30
seconds or so for it to load. Note that not all stations are on air

24/7, so some might not work when you try them.

 6. When focussed on a station in the list, you can press the
application key for more options, such as to go to their home page.

 I hope this helps.

I would like to download this free program but before I do, I would

If there is anyone that can assist with its user friendly hints that
 work
 with Jaws, please do so.
Upon download, is there anything to watch out for, or not to click
 on or
 stay away from?
Once downloaded, does it interrupt jaws or shut down sound?
Magic Jack shut off my sound and reset files, does this JLC do any
 such
 thing?
I use Englishfrom , USA and like to keep it all simple, is this
 possible?

does jaws work with it well, and to what level: good, ok, a little and
so forth?
There is a reason to my maddness, it is called money, costs and tech
fees! If my com system gets messed around, this is major woes for me, I
ain't no tech and have found it better to ask questions, and lots of them
first, research and if need be, bug people until I am satisfied enough
to involve my computer into this big wide world of things that might be
strange to me at this moment.
That is it!
So my friends, if there is anyone out there that can add just a little to
my knowledge base, this would be so much appriciated. And when I become
an expert, useing some of your ansers, I will do a pod cast for all those
ones, yet to come and are uncertain about such advances.

The program is free. You just download it from

 it.
   There are no
special installation options for screen reader users and it
 doesn't
mess up any of your settings.

Note that not all stations are on
 air

24/7, so some might not work when you try them.

  6. When focussed on a station in the list, you can press the
application key for more options, such as to go to their home
 page.

  I hope this helps.

Re: Accessible Digital Recorders

2008-05-14 Thread tickpub
Hi, I'm getting in a little late on this one but I did a ton of looking
around and listening and I eventually bought the Olympus 40. I only
wished it had been around a few years back, wow, it is nice, easy to work
and has many great features and tells you most everything you need to
know about how it works.
I only wished I could have afforded the Olympus 50, I find that I carry
around a lot of recorded data, pod casts and many muic and song cuts. Now
that extra space wold have been very nice. I totally recommend the
Olympus 40 or 50.
The price is fair and it is sstrong, well fits in the pocket and
justworks great. It runs on battteries and this is nice.
Ok, that is it for now, MMM

Re: Magic Jack... Yes!!!

2008-04-22 Thread tickpub
Hi, I have been trying to work with MJ and had some problems so removed
it and finally got my system back up and working ok.
But now...you mention this:
I found my jfw.ini file and added the line to lock Jaws into using the
built-in soundcard on my motherboard.
I plugged the lowly piece of hardware into my USB port... And waited with
bated breath.
XP was a little confused at first, and asked me if I wanted to use this
device to copy pictures from a camera to my hard drive...
But meanwhile, the onboard software installed itself, downloaded updates
and
took me to the registration screen.

Why did you have tomake a change in jaws?
What type of software does it download, where are the files and what are
they named?
Does MJ interfere with anything else?
Could you explain in detail on exactly how to do this?
Do you mean that jaws no longer works with the elequence program or waht?
I would much appriciate any help.
Thank you,
MMM

I established my location, verified my settings... And soon, I was
 greeted
with the soft phone's screen showing me my fine new phone number.

So I plugged in a telephone to the other end of the Magic Jack.
I got a dial tone, but at first, I couldn't get the phone's buttons
 to
operate... That is, when I pushed the buttons, there was no
 accompanying
tone pulse, so there was no dialing from the telephone.
I could dial out from the soft phone, and I'd had trouble with that
 phone
previously... During those ancient times in a former century when we
 used to
have 56-k modems in our computers and splitters for our
 telephones...
So I switched out that phone for a cordless phone... And after
 positioning
the base unit for the phone far away enough from the router such
 that that
strange helicopter sound wasn't to be heard during my test
 conversations,
I arrived at having a fully functional telephone connection
 contingent only
 on my computer's availability.
As I personally hate cell phones for anything but necessary calls,
 I'll
enjoy talking to my relatives over a stable connection at a very
 reasonable
 price.
Thanks to who ever was the first person to post the news about Magic
 Jack to

But, I have removed the MJ device and am not sure if I shold allow it any

Does it do this reset each time you plug it in?
Once I plug it in and start useing it, do I have to reset this setting
only once?

I am so busy that I can't spend time trying to fix things I know little

Does it have any more tricks under its buttons?

Hi All, Ok, about Magic Jack, glad your doing ok with it. I tried it
 as
it so states in its set up and nothing went right.
So far, it has taken me two days to try and figure out what the heck
 went
wrong. I cannot find anything that it downloaded, this is necessary
 in
order to clean out my system and possibly try again. But here is
 the
really bad thing; all my sounds are gone now. I go into the sound
settings and try loading up one of my own or any other and no go. I
 tried
just setting one, like windows start and when I click the play
 button to
as if test the sound, a dialouge box shows and says that this media
 file
cannot be played because my sound card is now in use and as far as
 I
 know, this is bunk.
My jaws works ok, but no sounds in any program. I use to get a sound
 to
notify me that I got email, now nothing; and so on.

So, does anyone know how to get my sound card working again?
I really would like to get MJ working but not at the expense of jaws
 or
 any other interference.
 Any ideas out there?

   Hello James!

To answer your question about Magicjack and Screenreaders (JAWS
 or

Windows-eyes), yes, a blind person can use it just fine. All
 you
  do
is insert the Magicjack into a USB port and it installs itself
temporarily. You have to answer a few questions at the sign-in
screen the first time, but that is it. The interface on the
  screen
is not to accessible, but it has a skype-like interface and you
  can
enter numbers and there is a dial and hang-up button. However,
  once
the program is loaded, you can minimize the screen, so
 Magicjack
  is
hidden or minimized; then you can plug a regular house phone
 into

the MJ unit and you are ready to go. You get a regular
 dial-tone

and you can make phone calls directly from the regular phone.
 You

don't even have to use the screen at all. It works directly
 like
  a
   regular phone.

One thing: On my old Dell Desktop, once I plug the MJ unit,
 the

sound goes to the phone (XP Pro); however, when I plug the MJ
 unit

into the HP Desktop (Vista) I don't get the same effect and the
sound stays with the computer. You can turn off JAWS and just
 use

the phone. Some guy said you could start JAWS first and plug
 in
  the
MJ unit later and the USB may not take over the sound card.

Like I said, MJ is definitely usable via the phone regardless
 of

   your screenreader.

I have the unit and it works fine. They could, however, do a
  little
script-type work on the screen interface. The good thing about
 it

is that, once you get the unit, your phone costs go way down.
 You

only have to pay a small licensing fee in succeeding years ($18
 a

year for me, as I bought unit early, but it may be cheaper for
current purchasers). Free long distance in US and Canada and
  skype-

 you

Do any of these programs interfere with Jaws or cause slow downs or have

Wow, hope you can, got troubles here?
Ok, so far, something has happened to my soundcard so one error said.
No more sounds at all; not with windows boot up or start, no sounds when
I use to get them with new email, no nothing. I tried resetting them but
it tells me that it has something to do with my sound card.
Jaws works fine, and mp3 and wav files will play but none of my voices
other than jaws set voice will work. So apparently, trying to install MJ
created a conflict with my sound card.
Also, now textaloud and Dsppech will not function.
All this took place when MJ locked up my com.
I also would like to know what is Natural speak, does that work with the
soundcard?
Maybe it or some driver got knocked out???
So, first I must now solve these major problems in order to try MJ again.
Thank you and would appriciate any help at all.

Please...Re: Magicjack and Screenreaders

2008-04-13 Thread tickpub
Hi All, Ok, about Magic Jack, glad your doing ok with it. I tried it as
it so states in its set up and nothing went right.
So far, it has taken me two days to try and figure out what the heck went
wrong. I cannot find anything that it downloaded, this is necessary in
order to clean out my system and possibly try again. But here is the
really bad thing; all my sounds are gone now. I go into the sound
settings and try loading up one of my own or any other and no go. I tried
just setting one, like windows start and when I click the play button to
as if test the sound, a dialouge box shows and says that this media file
cannot be played because my sound card is now in use and as far as I
know, this is bunk.
My jaws works ok, but no sounds in any program. I use to get a sound to
notify me that I got email, now nothing; and so on.

So, does anyone know how to get my sound card working again?
I really would like to get MJ working but not at the expense of jaws or
any other interference.
Any ideas out there?

  Hello James!

To answer your question about Magicjack and Screenreaders (JAWS or

Windows-eyes), yes, a blind person can use it just fine. All you
 do
is insert the Magicjack into a USB port and it installs itself
temporarily. You have to answer a few questions at the sign-in
screen the first time, but that is it. The interface on the
 screen
is not to accessible, but it has a skype-like interface and you
 can
enter numbers and there is a dial and hang-up button. However,
 once
the program is loaded, you can minimize the screen, so Magicjack
 is
hidden or minimized; then you can plug a regular house phone into

the MJ unit and you are ready to go. You get a regular dial-tone

and you can make phone calls directly from the regular phone. You

don't even have to use the screen at all. It works directly like
 a
  regular phone.

One thing: On my old Dell Desktop, once I plug the MJ unit, the

sound goes to the phone (XP Pro); however, when I plug the MJ unit

into the HP Desktop (Vista) I don't get the same effect and the
sound stays with the computer. You can turn off JAWS and just use

the phone. Some guy said you could start JAWS first and plug in
 the
MJ unit later and the USB may not take over the sound card.

Like I said, MJ is definitely usable via the phone regardless of

  your screenreader.

I have the unit and it works fine. They could, however, do a
 little
script-type work on the screen interface. The good thing about it

is that, once you get the unit, your phone costs go way down. You

only have to pay a small licensing fee in succeeding years ($18 a

year for me, as I bought unit early, but it may be cheaper for
current purchasers). Free long distance in US and Canada and
 skype-
type credits for calling abroad. I think, however, that, if you

sent a friend or relative in another country a unit, you could
 have
free long-distance calling, as long as you both are logged on or
 if
you call your MJ number and it is in England, they could answer it

and pay nothing. I like that.

  James

Warning on Magic Jack so far!

2008-04-12 Thread tickpub
Ok, I tgot my Magic Jack, it all sounded so easysorry!
I am leary of anything that just says, plug it in and this is it.
No way, it should tell you that there is an exchange between the device
and the internet and some sort of download or files downlod.
I want some control over what goes into my com but not whith this and the
following took place
As we set up my phone to make the switch to MJ and all went well with
this and then we plugged in the MJ and it came up ok but then about a
minute into the wait and something was downloading or making a try at it,
my com locked up and it tells me that there is a conflict.

My Jaws was knocked out and there was nothing to do but start over.
I did make the mistake of not shutting down all my other programs such as
Magic 10, and Jaws 8 and maybe Word was running but the instructions
should have said something.
We started over this time, and now it tells me that we need to plug into
the USB but this was already done. So now we put the plug device into a
second USB plug and it repeats but seems to move on and we get to the web
site but now my jaws is gone and it will not restart.
I tried hitting my dial tone, it worked fine and hit a preloaded number
but no go.

We tried several more times, but now my entire system was acting slow,
and my jaws would not work properly.
I tried to find out what had downloded into my system but nothing called
Magic Jack could be found. I thought I might clean it out and start over.
There were some files anew but unnamed and had no idea what they went to
or what they might do.

So, got really pissed, redid my phone back to its regular place, and now
have made an appointment with my techy to come out this week and maybe
find what the heck has happened.

I will have to run a repair on my jaws and hope that will fix it.
I only hope that the rest of the programs might work and i am soon to
ttry.

Some of this could have been from me...because I did not shut down all my
programs.
Wehn my com locked up we had to reboot and somewhere in here we could
have goofed things up but still, my jaws program is most important and no
way can anything shut or take it over.

So, I gave the MJ to my son in law for a test on his com, he knows more
about this stuff than myself

So, so far I cannot recommend MJ to anyone who runs jaws or other speech
programs.

But I will test it out on my kids program next.
I run a XP-home Del with plenty of memory and plenty of space and that is
it for now folks
If anyone might know of a fix with this, please let me know.

I have ordered one, will test it out as soon as it gbets here and post
whatever I learn. But the site says it will call Canada, Mexico and most
of the areas around the States, like some of the east island?
But will let everyone know as soon as i run the tests. I'll be as honest
as I can with my assessigment.

 Is this a fact?

Yes, you can call any number in the United States, Canada, Puerto
  Rico, and
the American Virgin Island from any Magic Jack, not needing one
 to
  answer at
  home in the U.S.

Can I store numbers into it on the com?
When you dial a number on the hand set, it stays on the screen for
 a
  few
  entries, never counted.
You can dial the stored numbers and I believe use your keyboard
 to
  enter
numbers though I've not actually tried entering numbers.

What else can someone tell me, please?

Hi All, you have been a great source of information for me, and now I am
looking into and have ordered the magic jack.
I would like to know how well it works, and is it an easy set up and if I
took it out of country, let's say Australia, plugged it into a com there,
could i then call back home? Or do we need to own two of them, making a
connection from out of country?
Can I store numbers into it on the com?
Can I use my com to dial out instead of actually dialing on the phone?
What else can someone tell me, please?

Re: making a podcast

2008-03-22 Thread tickpub
Hi, making the pod cast is simple, depends on your skill and the quality
you want to create. If your on the road, use a digital battery run
recorder, the best I know of is an Olympis 40 or 50. You just press a
button, speak and it is saved as a wma file. You must then download this
to your com, send it out.
But there are others out there that can ttell you of a less expensive way
of doing this, but after all my personal research, I find that the
Olympis 40 does the job for me. I only wished I could have bought the 50
instead.
If you know how to work with sound editors, then you can really have some
fun. But just for simple recording and posting it on your own site, for
your own use, keep it simple.

Oh yes, the Olympis 40 or 50 are nice, go to BCT, they offer a link to a
sale on the 50 at this time. Yes, they are about 200 to 250, but well
worth it.
