I tried shooting with a high key background, used white board from
home depot for the floor and white seamless for the back. I didn't have
enough light on the back, so I had issues to deal with in post. Also
the seams between the floor panels needed to be dealt with in post.
I did discover that I could drag the spot remover in lightroom to
remove a line, so that made things easier.

I was never really happy with my lighting, but it wasn't a total failure.

Lighting was a 7' umbrella on the model (no fill light and just
the room as fill reflector) and a smaller softbox on the background.
Since the stage was in a corner, I only had one side, and the front
 for setting up lights.

I shot about 1300 frames, and narrowed it down a bit for this set:

Comments and suggestions on improving the lighting appreciated.

Photographer vs. The Color Run

Yet another case where a company uses photographer's photo
without permission.

There was an interesting story unrolling, where a photographer
allowed the company (The Color Run) to use his photograph(s?) on
their facebook, just to find later that they used his photo in an
international advertisement campaign (including Sports Authority
store chain). ... So, he demanded the compensation... In return,
the company decided to sue the photographer for using its name
and registered marks...

Here is the story.
http://petapixel.com/2014/02/14/color-run-sues-photog-demanding-payment-widely-distributed-photo/

Having read all of this, I think:
1. The Color Run company is using a bad practice in the way how
they used photos without permission. Their response to the demand
of compensation is also weird. Being in the advertisement
business, they should know the laws. It is the case where the
company should be punished monetarily for such action.

2. Some demands of the photographer appear rather strange
(immature?). While in my opinion his demands are formulated so
that they leave the room for negotiation and for a step back,
some of the demands (request for the status, etc.) just don't
make much sense to me. Posting his status on FB about being
employed by the company is also strange. (I wonder if it all
comes from the percieved fame of being associated with the
company.)

While I was going to post this to PDML (since Saturday), there
was an update on the photographer's blog that an agreement was
reached and the company will be paying him...

That's what the Mamyia RC-402 module was for. It provides a two
position momentary contact switch with an attached tapered release screw
socket, (I can't remember if it's ASA or DIN that specifies the
standard), that you would find on most cameras from about 1950 to the
age of digital propitiatory connectors. Mamyia supplied it as an add on
for those wanting to use their existing long remote shutter releases
rather than buying a wired remote. This was before wireless remotes
were well accepted by professionals. If you watch e-bay, I expect that
one will turn up now and then, that's where I got mine. It's no big
thing to figure out the pinouts with a multimeter or even flashlight

The biggest problem I found was getting three conductor wire to connect
the adapter module to the mini stereo plug, I ended up using telephone
wire. Finding a tiny project box was also a problem the one I used is
three times larger than it needs to be.

Re: SHUTTER RELEASE

2014-02-18 Thread P.J. Alling
Yes, I have. Other devices such as the Canon adapter to their
propitiatory four or five pin connector might work, though I don't know
if they still even make them. Then you'd have to cut the wire and solder
a mini stereo plug onto it, which might not be possible if it's a nylon
core wire. Those Canon adapters aren't cheep either.

At one point I even published some web pages about the project. They're
no longer on the internet and I don't know where the pages are if I even
saved them.

On 2/18/2014 2:39 PM, John wrote:

If memory serves, you suggested the Mamyia RC-402 once before and I

That's what the Mamyia RC-402 module was for. It provides a two
position momentary contact switch with an attached tapered release screw
socket, (I can't remember if it's ASA or DIN that specifies the
standard), that you would find on most cameras from about 1950 to the
age of digital propitiatory connectors. Mamyia supplied it as an add on
for those wanting to use their existing long remote shutter releases
rather than buying a wired remote. This was before wireless remotes
were well accepted by professionals. If you watch e-bay, I expect that
one will turn up now and then, that's where I got mine. It's no big
thing to figure out the pinouts with a multimeter or even flashlight
bulb, a couple of wires, and a battery.

The biggest problem I found was getting three conductor wire to connect
the adapter module to the mini stereo plug, I ended up using telephone
wire. Finding a tiny project box was also a problem the one I used is
three times larger than it needs to be.

On 2/18/2014 11:55 AM, John wrote:

Lighting was a 7' umbrella on the model (no fill light and just

PESO: Ex-Cow

2014-02-18 Thread David Mann
I've been roped into scanning some old slides from the 1920s (or thereabouts),
most of which are from a Commonwealth tour of Australia. There's an
accompanying book but that's in storage with the rest of our possessions while
our house is being repaired.

The slides are a weird format, about 6x7ish, and are mounted between glass
which is taped together. I've made up an insert to hold them in my medium
format scanner because I didn't want to take them apart.

I just came across this one and words fail me. How it got up there I have no
idea. I am starting to think that someone's playing a joke.

Warning: the photo features a deceased cow.

I would love to hear some captions :) This slide has a very small handwritten
label which I'm mostly unable to decipher. Apparently it's in Queensland.

While looking to find out what the powder was, I found that there are
several competing organizations hosting these events. Looks like
Raleigh is going to have at least three of them in this coming year.
Don't know how many of them will end up coming into my neighborhood

I did find out that the powder is food grade corn starch dyed with
food coloring. Probably won't hurt you if you get it on your skin, but

The most interesting thing I found out about them is their corporate

I shot one a year and a half ago. You guys are really blowing this
out of proportion.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/alohadave/sets/72157630592112576/

Stay upwind and stay out the color bombs, and you will be fine. I had
dust on my gear and clothes, and what little didn't brush off my
clothes, came out in the wash no problem. I even changed lenses while
shooting.

The company that did the one I attended uses mall parking lots and
fairgrounds and other fairly open spaces. They didn't close off any
streets, just the mall parking lot before it opened on a Sunday
morning.

PESO: Trillium

Two photos of a pretty little flower. I've been meaning to take these for the
past week but whenever I remembered to go out the light wasn't right.

I think it's a trillium, anyway. If not, I expect to be corrected!

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/766/#peso
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/767/#peso

Both taken handheld with the K10D and FA100mm f/2.8 Macro. I underexposed a
bit to preserve detail in the petals then brightened them up a little in
Photoshop.

Pretty hot for us, too. I think I've only experienced one hotter day when it
got up to about 40 a few years ago. Normally the hottest we'll get is about
32. In this part of the country the heat is thankfully very dry and we had 30%
humidity.

I filled my Spinal Tap* to 11 before going out for my run. It ran out within
the last km so I managed it quite well. When I got back I slammed down a
couple of glasses of iced water then sipped on a couple of glasses of Nuun
during the evening. No worries with dehydration which has sometimes been an
issue for me when training in hot weather. I don't want to know what my core
body temperature was!

Today's much milder, about 20C.

My partner really really wants AC by next summer. I may have to somehow
 squeeze the money from somewhere...

We use ours all the time during the winter as it's such an efficient heater.
We got it for free after Mother Nature cracked our chimney and it's much better
than the gas fireplace. Trouble is, we now want to get rid of the fireplace
but we have to pay to have that done ourselves.

I was referring to the litigation, not the event itself.

In one of those Incredible Race episodes, the contestants were involved in

Probably the idea for the Colo(u)r Run came from there.
