Re: It was twenty years ago today, Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play

2021-01-01 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Doug and all dear PDML friends!

I really enjoyed reading this history of PDML! Thanks, Doug, for taking over
PDML. It’s greatly appreciated. Your generosity led to a lot of great
friendships, photography camaraderie, travel, improvement of skills, a PDML
exhibition, sharing of photo knowledge, teasing, storytelling, humor, and
everything else life dishes out! What a fun group! I know I’ve been a bit MIA
lately, but PDML is still a favorite part of my life.

I hope to be more active in 2021!
Wishing the very best to all on the list!
Happy New Year!’
Stay safe and well!
Big cheers, Christine Aguila

Thanks, everyone! I’m so out of touch with Pentax gear; it’s embarrassing. I

Hi Bruce: That’s good to know, but it is possible that I would find myself
shooting an appliqué art piece that might have fabrics like herringbone in
them, but it would often be in small pieces rather than an entire piece in
herringbone. Good to know about the herringbone fabric issue. Got it in my

Hi Sandy! YikesQ Hadn’t thought about moire. I’ll have to read up on that,

Some of the artwork would probably already have laced mounting, so drooping
wouldn’t be the problem, but you’re right, hanging fabric does have variables
like drooping that would have to be dealt with, and if I ended up doing a lot
of this, I would have to have multiple set-ups, shoot flat, shoot hanging etc.
I probably would never be able to do large pieces since I don’t have the studio
space for it.

Depending on the piece, shooting it still in the embroidery hoop or slate frame
might work—though it depends on the piece, “white” space around the design
perimeter etc, but with proper support, that might work too, like everything
else, experimentation is necessary here.

Thanks, Stan! Very helpful! Cheers, Christine

Hi Everyone!

Quick question:
I’d like to develop skills used to photograph the textile arts—which can often
include fabrics with beads and metals and sequins etc.
So, has anyone done this kind of work? Any recommendations? Tips? Resources?

Also, any tips for ways and stands for hanging the art so it can be
photographed?

I do have a photography background stand for background papers etc. Has anyone
used this stand to photograph art?

Maybe two stands? One to hold the rolled background paper, then another stand
to hang the art from? Something like that? What do you think?

Central Camera in Chicago and PDMLs Year End Quote List

2020-06-01 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone!

I hope you and your families are well and safe during these very difficult
times.

I thought I’d share a photography related story. Many of you probably know of
Central Camera store located downtown Chicago. It’s a quirky but fun camera
store, which has been in business for 121 years, founded 1899. Don Flesh is
the 3rd generation owner; his grand-father started the business; Flesh is aged
72.

Sadly, Central Camera suffered looting and was burned out. Flesh is confident
he can get the store back up and running, which is good. He is also not angry
and stands “with the African American community in solidarity.”

On the one hand I share this story because, well, this is a photography list
and this is a photography story and I thought photographers on the list would
be interested.

But on the other hand I thought I’d highlight two Flesh quotes that would have
definitely made our PDML Quote List that Mark Roberts puts together every year
had Flesh been a PDMLer.

Quote #1: “I wanted to go in, but the looters, there were so many people
walking by and I was a little bit shy and fearful and all I had was an umbrella
that was closed, and I didn’t think I could knock out everybody. No Rambo
here,” he said.

Quote #2: “Flesh started the live interview by noting that he had run out of
film and his phone had died so he was unable to photograph the scene. Asked
for his parting thoughts, he said, ‘I hope everybody is safe. Everybody should
learn a lesson. What is the lesson? Be prepared. Have more film in your
pocket.’”

I’ve included the link to the article below.

Shortly after Darrel & I set up house together (almost 30 years ago), we went
out to dinner for a cheap and cheerful meal.

At one point I said to Darrel, “Honey, you have potato salad in your beard.”

“You don’t let me save anything anymore,” he responded.

By the way, nice look, Dave! Very nice indeed!

Re: OT: Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stop the Spread

2020-03-26 Thread Christine Aguila
We just got an emergency alert via our mobile phones that the City of Chicago
is closing down the lakefront, beaches etc, which I think is a good idea.

I’ve been pretty busy with shifting my teaching to online. Our community
college district shifted pretty quickly as things turned, and faculty have
really risen to the occasion. This week I’ve had video sessions with students,
and I’ve been greatly inspired by students wanting to persist with the semester
despite these difficult circumstances.

What is worrisome is finding food and supplies. I haven’t been out in 10 days
expect for a 30 minute walk in an empty park. I’m not that keen on going to
the store, but I will have to in the next few days, and, of course, I will take
precautions. Ordering online is great, but so much is out of stock and the
wait times can sometimes be a bit long, but it just requires us to do a bit of
rationing and be smart about how we use up supplies. A constant refrain in the
house is “we’ll just have to make do,” which everyone around the world is
saying.

Also, we have some friends who are nurses, and I have some students whose mom’s
are nurses, so we’re very worried about them. There are women everywhere in
America sewing cotton face masks for hospitals. Maybe you’ve seen the calls for
face masks on Facebook. I’d love to stitch some up since I have sewing
skills, but my school work has my time pretty occupied. Maybe I can stitch
some up week after next, since we will be on spring break.

Re: OT Covid-19

Hi Paul & Everyone Else!

Hope you feel better soon, Paul! Thinking of you!

Darrel & I were able to get some groceries today, which is good, but absolutely
no toilet paper to be found; boxes of tissue will have to do until we can
secure TP.

City Colleges here in Chicago is shifting to online learning. We will take
next week to prepare for the shift.

I was hoping to do a little photography in the next few weeks, a photowalk or
two, and post some shots and rejoin all the PDML fun, but I might be a bit
distracted now with the attention needed for the online shift—and, of course,
all those airborn germs have given me pause.

I have been lurking a bit, but I’ve been light on the photography. I did shoot
a basketball game awhile back, and I got this great jump shot, but I missed the
focus. I wept.

The other day I found myself looking at Pentax lenses. There’s nothing like a
shinny new lens to rekindle photography! :-)

I think of you guys all the time! I still consider myself part of the
gang—I’ve just been on a little break!

Big cheers, Christine & Darrel

USB HUB Recommendation for MacBook Pro

2018-06-05 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi All:

I’m in the market for a USB hub to plug into my MacBook Pro/Retina 2013. I’d
like at least 3 USB ports in the hub for external drives. The Belkin on the
Apple web site didn’t have good reviews.

Can anyone recommend a good hub?

Lightroom Advice Needed!

2018-06-04 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi All:
Hope this post finds everyone well!

Here’s my situation:
1) On my old iMac (2011), I have the stand alone Lightroom version, which has 2
or 3 catalogues.
2) The RAW files for these catalogues are on two external hard drives connected
to my iMac.

Here’s my goal:
1) Bring the catalogues from the iMac into my Lightroom Classic Creative Cloud
version on my laptop. In doing this, I would, of course, then hook up my
external hard drives to the laptop via the two USB drives.

Reasons for setting this goal:
1) For reasons I won’t go into, I’m going to loose free, easy, and daily access
to my iMac.
2) The iMac is getting old.
3) I want all my photos in one place.
4) I want to be more mobile; during lazy evenings when Darrel and I are in the
living room with the tv on, I want to be with him, and I want to work on my
photos.

Here’s my query:
1) To achieve my goal, is it just a matter of just exporting the catalogues on
my desktop to, say, a flash drive, then import these catalogues into Lightroom
on my laptop? Then, of course, plug in my external drives?

2) I back up my catalogues to my external drives. Would it be easier to just
import the back-ups into Lightroom on my laptop?

3) Any other suggestions or tips I should consider?

Cheers, Christine

Yes, this is key!!! With LR CC you DO NOT have access to the Print, Book,
Slideshow, and Map Modules.

I tried to send a response to PDML with the adobe link which has Julianne

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Stan:
Today I did some testing on the syncing issue you speak to at the end of your
post. I took a photo in imported it to my iPad Pro via the SD card reader and
plugged into the Lightening port. The frame imported to my camera roll, then I
imported into the Mobile Lightroom app. I then made some tweaks. Then I
forced a sync. I then opened LR Classic Cheers, Christine on my laptop and the
frame was synced with the adjustments I made on the iPad Pro.

It would be great if Godfrey could jump in here and help us clarify issues :-).

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Christine Aguila
On the laptop version, on the right side panel where all the develop tools are,
you can see the adjustments that are made when you choose the presets located
on the left-side panel. Take a screen shot of the medium contrast curve on the
laptop, then try to copy the curve diagram. For Punch and Face/Scenic
sharpening the numbers are explicitly shown.

I do a catalogue back up to an external drive. Am I right in thinking, that I
can import catalogue back-ups into my laptop Lightroom Creative Cloud and plug
in my external drives to the laptop and I should be good to go?—Or do I have
this wrong?

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Bob:

I am a Lightroom Classic CC version 7.3.1 user on my laptop MacBook Pro
s/Retina 2013 13-inch.
I also have the Lightroom mobile app on my iPad Pro 10 inch and iPhone 6,
though I have only just started using these, so I’m still learning.

Punch equals Clarity +30 and Vibrance +25.
Sharpen for Faces equals Amount 35 and Radius 1.4 and Detail 15 and Masking 60
Sharpen for Landscape equals Amount 40 and Radius 0.8 and Detail 35 and Masking 0

I haven’t migrated a catalogue to the cloud. I thought catalogues could only
sit on a drive—external or internal. I think you can export a catalogue and
import it to an existing catalogue, but if what I just said is true, wouldn’t
the imported catalogue have to sit on a drive as well?

I have Lightroom 6, version 6.14 on my iMac 2011 desktop, but my understanding
is Adobe is done with the stand alone, and will not be offering further
updates. I’m quite undecided about what to do. Should I bring all photos over
to the laptop or continue working the two versions? What to do? What to do?

Cheers, Christine

Several hundred years ago when I just started out, students used to miss-speak

Re: Visual communication of photographers

2018-02-24 Thread Christine Aguila
Well, here goes:

How an entity (company or periodical) handles issues like photo captions might
be more of an issue of style rather than effective communication. Style in
this sense means how they handle photo captions, spacing, names of sources, et
al—think of the various style manuals: APA, MLA, AP, Chicago Manual of Style,
NYT Style etc.

I would argue effective communication is different—it’s the art of using
language expressively and strategically to communicate a message for a
particular purpose and for a specific audience.

I do agree though that effective communication is a skill that has to be
practiced—but it’s not unattainable.

As to the order you describe, maybe—and I’m just guessing here—the order is
based on the assumption the viewer looks at the front row first then moves
towards the back, so this becomes reflected in the order of names in the photo
caption.

I had meant to respond to the school photo point you originally posted. A
friend wanted me to take photos of her children, and I agreed to take a few
candids. In conversation, she mentioned school photos were so boring etc etc.
Gently, I expressed my view that school photos are actually quite important.
In a no nonsense, no fuss way, they capture the student at yearly
intervals—depicting physical development and if lucky a bit of spirit—a bit of
personality. Watching the development from year to year is amazing—and
heartwarming in my view.

Now I’m not suggesting this is an either/or situation—both professionally taken
family photos, candids, at home Kodak moments—and school photos all have a
place in the mix of documenting kids—they are all important—and fun to have!

The thread also made me nostalgic, and I pulled out all my old school photos,
which for grades 1-8 were always group photos. We never had single portraits
in grammar school—always class group shots. There were a few closed eyes, but
nothing really consistent. For the most part, we all just looked at the camera
and smiled. I love the group shots—especially in grammar school, since you
spent an entire year in class with the same students. Individual portraits
make more sense in high school given the structure of U.S. high school.

I have no idea what tricks the photographer used to get the overwhelming
majority of students to settle down and pay attention to the camera—but the
photos show nothing fancy—just get the shorter kids in the front rows and the
taller kids in the back. The boys always wore ties, and the girls
dresses—though that changed in 1972, when the Chicago Public schools allowed
girls to start wearing pants to school, so in 7th & 8th grade, some girls wore
pants.

If I was a parent and the photos were consistently bad with respect to eyes
closed etc., I’d complain, especially if the portraits are individual head
shots rather than group shots—though I do appreciate the challenges of shooting
school photos. Maybe the teachers have to be more involved in helping the
photographer get the younger ducklings to settle down—a kind of team effort. I
don’t know if that happens these days. Still, if you’re not hiring skilled
talent and/or it’s all rather assembly line, well, it makes it kind of hard on
a competent photographer to get the best results.

Cheers, Christine
