New Glass
Here is the first shot from my K-70 with my new smc Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm lens. It is far from ideal as I have only begun to learn this lens, especially getting the focus and depth of field where I want them. I have never before owned a macro lens. The vast majority of the mills that I am photographing are not in good shape, because most have been abandoned. Even the very few that are still in operation, such as Vaughn's mill, are generally not attractive, partly because they have been converted to diesel of electric power, their flumes gone and their wheels abandoned and rotting or rusting. One great feature of your photos is that you had the mill ponds and dams, and those water features are major parts of your compositions. As I continue to photograph SW VA mills I will very rarely find that. Most of the mill ponds and dams in this region are long gone. Many grist mills in this area were fed fed by wooden flumes carrying water for some distance. Still, I expect to find a few gems, but I don't expect to find any as nice as those Clinton mills. Both images are very good work. I am sure that there were once many more mills in Clinton, but since population density is much higher there than in most of the area where I work unused mills there were probably generally torn down and the land reused. In an area like mine that is mainly rural some mills were still in operation anywhere from the '30s to the '60s. Since there was not a great demand for the land on which they stand their hulks often remain. Still, only a small percentage of the old mills remain standing. In an urban area such as the Roanoke valley where I live only one old mill out of dozens remains on its original site (and is still operating 'though greatly changed). -- Dale H. Old Water-Powered Mills of Southwestern VA (Preliminary Photos)
I have posted the initial version of my Old Mills page at: https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/pages/mills.html The initial photos are all of old water-powered mills in Floyd Co., VA. All of the photos except for Mabry Mill (which was taken last year) are preliminary photos, taken on a cloudy day scouting trip last Tuesday to get a feel for what I'm doing. One objective is to show the mill wheel, if it is still there. Another is to give an indication of the overall physical condition of those mills. Of the mills photographed last Tuesday only Vaughn's Mill is still operating. It was converted from water to diesel power years ago, but still produces Indian Chief flour. Water-powered mills, like covered bridges, are a vanishing part of our history. After I complete my photographic survey of Floyd Co. mills (which will include better photos taken on sunny days) I will explore other counties near me in southwestern VA. One option that I am considering adding is a set of maps so that other folks can more easily find old mills that I have visited. -- Dale H. Old Mills
Well, here I go starting another photographic interest. A friend got me interested in SPOOM - the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills (https://www.spoom.org). This morning I joined SPOOM, downloaded their PDF of existing old mills in Virginia, and I spent the afternoon in nearby Floyd Co., VA. I located five of the eight mills they have listed for Floyd Co., and had previously photographed one more (Mabry Mill, photographed about a year ago). I still have to locate two Floyd Co. mills, whose descriptions in the SPOOM list of Virginia mills are vague and incorrect. Today's trip was what some might call a fishing trip, but which I call a scouting trip. A scouting trip has three purposes: 1) To find the desired locations (old mills in this case) and plot them accurately in Microsoft Mappoint on my laptop so that I can find them again (or direct someone else to their locations). 2) To take establishing photos so that I can decide which view of a location (i.e., mill) works best. I like overcast days like today for scouting trips so I don't have to deal with bad sun angles or shadows. 3) To decide what time of day will give the best light for each chosen view. I will review the photos tomorrow (it's tired and I'm getting late (bonus points for anyone who can name the song and artist from whom I stole that line)). The two mills I didn't find have no GPS coordinates, but have locations in a brand of Virginia atlas that I don't have, so a trip to Barnes and Noble tomorrow is in order. I hope to plan a return visit on a sunny day later this week or next week, that should yield some photos good enough to share. Mind you, Mabry Mill is a silk purse and today I saw a lot of sow's ears. I hope to use some of the techniques I used in the Mabry Mill photo to make the Floyd Co. mills look less like run-of-the-mill (pun intended) swine and a bit more like Miss Piggy. -- Dale H. Link Farm Covered Bridge (1912), Giles Co., VA
I am continuing to photograph covered bridges in my region, and yesterday visited the Link Farm Covered Bridge (1912) in Giles County, Virginia. If any of you have seen Dirty Dancing, that film was set at a Catskills resort in upper New York state, but the film actually used two resorts in the southeast for the shooting. One was Mountain Lake Hotel in Giles County, Virginia, and the Link Farm bridge is just off of Mountain Lake Road. Larry Colen kindly suggested some things that I can do to improve my photographs, including bracketing images and using histograms to avoid clipping. I experimented with that at home, and tried to use it in the field for this bridge but somehow got to the wrong setting and overexposed all of the images. I was running late and did not review the histograms in the field. That was a big mistake as all were badly clipped at the high end because of my error. I have posted the best of them, using post to correct somewhat for the overexposure. https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/pages/bridges.html#linkfarm I have created a new page just for my covered bridge photos, as I expect to be taking many more, and revisiting some bridges in better weather: https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/pages/bridges.html and have also redone the post for my earlier photo of Sinking Creek Covered Bridge (1916) which originally was too garish: https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/pages/bridges.html#sinkingcreek -- Dale H. I frequently drive within a few miles of this bridge, but this was my first visit. It was a gray day, and since the bridge is in a rather narrow creek valley lighting may be a bit problematic, but I will return in the spring. Re: Long Glass Adventures
I finally took an afternoon to have another try at hummingbird photography with the Rokinon 650-1300mm. I swung the shepherd's crook pole around, and that let me put the camera in the hall outside the kitchen and change the zoom from 1100mm to 900mm. That gave me a slightly wider field of view at the cost of a little less depth of field. I only have juveniles left (the adults are headed south) but there is still a fair amount of traffic. Long Glass Adventures
I have stolen only a little time to work with my long glass for shooting hummingbirds. During the first try my old Focal tripod (don't laugh! - I have to do this on the cheap) proved woefully inadequate to handle the load of so much lens. Results from the first session were, not surprisingly, woeful. Today I had another try, first with the old Focal, but that try ended when the tripod broke while I was moving it - it really was overloaded. In the time since the first try I found another old Focal tripod, but much beefier, at Goodwill, and it was a significant improvement. Shooting the hummingbird with the Rokinon 650-1300mm was quite a challenge. With a straight-on shot the camera was backed up against the refrigerator, and the shortest focal length that would focus on the feeder was 1100mm. That turned out to be too long a lens for a view as wide as I wanted. My favorite visitor is my only adult male, who arrived while I was still getting things framed, so I did not get a good shot. https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/images/IMGP0773.jpg After I got the shot set up I didn't get anybody on the two "flowers" closest to the camera - everybody used the back "flowers". https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/images/IMGP0792.jpg The only subjects who I got good shots of were the insects. Long Glass
In the 50 years that I have owned SLRs I have never owned glass longer than 300mm. For the last year and a half, ever since I bought my K-70, I have had my eye on some long glass at my local camera shop. They have had it in stock for at least a couple of years, and when I got paid for a job today I ran out and bought it. It is the Rokinon 650-1300mm f/8-16, and they had marked it down so far that the price was about $10 less than the best new price that I have seen online. It doesn't matter to me that it is three-on-the-tree without power brakes or power steering because that is what I first drove 50 years ago and I can still drive that - there are times when I run the K-70 in fully or mostly manual mode. If I get a chance tomorrow I will see what the traffic in my hummingbird feeder looks like through it. I suspect that I may want to build an extension bar to support the K-70 so I won't strain the tube at 1300mm, but 650mm may be enough for the feeder. -- Dale H. Initial Hummingbird Videos
Here are some of my first video clips of my ruby-throated hummingbirds. They are pretty crude - although I sometimes ran studio video cameras back in the NTSC days that was 20 years ago, and shooting video with a K-70 is much different. For my next experiments I will probably use aperture priority for depth of field. I have at least four hummers in my feeder. I had no adults this spring, but a few weeks ago I got two juvenile males and a juvenile female (based on behavior). About a week ago I got an adult male from a neighboring yard. The pecking order among the males appears to be juvenile #1, adult, juvenile #2. Juvenile male #1 and the adult like perch above the feeder to chase out lesser males. The feeder is hung from a shepherd's crook that has a bird silhouette welded to its top. I call that "Bird On a Bird" with apologies to Leonard Cohen. The first clip has the adult perched there and apparently tasting the air with his tongue. https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/temp/Bird On a Bird.avi The second clip is about the birds and the bees - this juvenile has to keep moving to avoid a bee. https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/temp/Bird and Bee.avi When I play that one online VLC complains about a damaged index but will play it. The third clip shows the adult male dining, then chasing out juvenile male #2 when he wants to eat. https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/temp/Get Outta Here.avi I can see that I have a long way to go before I start getting what I consider decent quality videos. I am saving up for some longer glass which should help. -- Dale H. Because the Soviets already has some spy satellites and the CIA didn't want the Soviets to see the mockup they removed the it from the pylon when a Soviet satellite was due to pass overhead. At first the CIA didn't realize was that the Soviet satellites could do infrared imaging. The shadow of the mockup was cooler than the surrounding ground. The Soviets were able to discern the mockup's outline from the infrared image of the shadow. Once the CIA learned that the Soviets had an outline of the mockup they figured out how it was obtained and then instituted thermal counter measures. The Soviet photographs showed the place where the mockup was. Dale H. The Kroger-Harris Teeter deal was that they swapped stores - the HT's north of the VA-NC line went to Kroger, the Krogers south of the state line went to HT. Some stores in the trade adopted the new brand, some were closed or sold. Dale H. Kroger is still going strong in Roanoke - since Harris Teeter left and the last Winn Dixie closed (both some years ago) we pretty much have Kroger, Food Lion, Walmart (they have a couple of Neighborhood Markets here in addition to the Supercenters), and one Fresh Market. Re: Taking better pictures
Another approach to taking better pictures is to use the age-old directions (around since at least the mid '50s) on how to get to Carnegie Hall. Dale H. I carry one stashed under the rear seat in my Explorer. The camera bag comes with me when I go back into the house, but the tripod stays. I have a couple of older, cheaper tripods in the house if I need one indoors. If I need a small tripod the Manfrotto tabletop tripod is always in the bag. I also usually have a monopod in the Explorer. Dale H.
