Re: PESO s spinning fire
Great shots, Larry! I never quite got the hang of shooting the fire spinners while we were out there. The closest I manage to get was near the end of the spinning and was ruined by the fact that I'd zoomed in too tight so that the fire left the frame and re-entered at the outer edges. Semi-OT: Paint Shop Pro Photo X2
Hi all, So, I recently inherited a copy of this software from my brother who was using it to edit and catalog photos of is granddaughter, but decided he didn't need all the bells and whistles that came along with it and wanted something a little more basic. Given that my old copy of Photoshop 7 predates DNG support and I can't seem to find the plugin that will make it do so, I thought I'd give it a shot. (I don't have the dough to spend on CS or LR, unfortunately, so my options are limited here.) Does anyone have any experience with this software at all? Because, so far, I'm very much less than impressed with it, and not for lack of features. It seems fine in that regard. What is really, really grating on me is the extreme -- and I use that word advisedly -- slowness in cataloging my DNG files in the organizer. It's taking somewhere around four seconds per photo! Picasa doesn't have this problem at all. It zips right through them like a hot knife through butter. Unfortunately, Picasa doesn't have the features that PSP does. Otherwise, I'd just say screw it. Anyone know why it might be taking so long to catalog these photos, and any idea if there's something that can be done to speed up the process? With a steep learning curve, you'd leasrn enough to get over that bar in a short span of time. With a shallow learning curve, though, you would have to spend far more time before you became proficient. That, in my opinion, would be a far less desirable situation. Hmm. The metaphor of 'a steep learning curve' is to say that something with this characteristic takes a lot of effort to learn ... there's a lot to learn in a relatively short space of time to achieve a proficient skill. Kind of like climbing a steep hill .. it takes a lot more effort in unit time to achieve the top of the hill if the hill is steep. . With an easy or gradual learning curve, one doesn't have to work as hard to become skilled ... the distance may or may not be as high, but the slope is longer so it's easier to move along it. Come to think of it, it was probably a poor choice of metaphor to begin with, inasmuch as I don't really have any time constraints to deal with. To the extent that there is a steep learning curve, it's more a function of my ability to get a grasp on the application before getting frustrated and putting it off for another time. So, instead of using the learning curve analogy, I probably just should have said, Me no grok The GIMP. -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Why do you shoot?
On 3/31/2011 12:39 PM, Collin Brendemuehl wrote: Tim just gave us some pretty macro flower pics. A lot of people will like them. I enjoy them as well and even really liked a couple. But as someone said a couple of weeks ago, the more seriously he takes his photography the less he shoots. The question is: How do we better our photography and get past cliche images? Can we take it more seriously without falling into either the trap of elitism or the trap of demanding a certain level of commitment from others? (That's the motivation behind my recent technical criticisms. We can do better without burning ourselves out.) I think about the retirement home with little old ladies taking oil paint lessons so that they can do still life paintings of daisies. I wonder how many of us have nothing better in our imagination than warm fuzzies. And I think Tim senses some of this with the sarcasm in his title about beating us to a bloody pulp with these cliche images. In 2D art one can hardly get more cliche than pretty flowers. So the challenge is this: Make a picture say something. Make it say one word That is, other than Ah or Ooo. A real word. High. Long. Fast. Friend. Love. Charity. Cold. Hot. Soft. Hard. Tomorrow. Yesterday. Win. Lose. Amateur. Professional. Try. Succeed. Fail. Return. Leave. Strong. Weak. Majesty. Humility. Service. Nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs -- they all work. This can help you when you take pictures at kids baseball games or at a wedding. Capture more than just the people. Get their faces, their hands, their interactions with each other and the world around them, their full expressions. That's what makes the Ali(Wasn't he still C. Clay at the time) v Liston picture so special. http://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/sports-products/muhammad-ali-framed-8x10-photo---ali-over-sonny-liston.html Sorry about the rant, but cliche images bother me deeply. Sincerely, Collin Brendemuehl http://kerygmainstitute.org He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose -- Jim Elliott Personally, I shoot what catches my eye. If that happens to be a flower, so be it. But, most of the time, it's not the flower itself that catches my attention, but the way the light falls on it. Having only pursued photography relatively seriously as a hobby for a little over a year, I'm still learning a lot about the camera itself, and a great deal more about photography itself. So, in essence, I shoot to learn how to shoot. Sometimes, flowers provide a great opportunity to learn how the camera captures light. Also, there's the fact that I like taking photos that people like to look at. I don't shoot for other photographers, simply because there's really no way to impress them. Every photographer has his own notion of what makes a great photo. I spend precious little time worrying about the technical details of my shots -- and that obviously shows a great percentage of the time. But, when I put the camera to my eye, I have an expectation of what I want my photos to look like when I finish with them, and I gear my shooting toward that end: Shoot, chimp -- nah, do-over. Shoot, chimp -- dammit. Shoot, chimp -- getting closer. Shoot, chimp -- dammit. And, then, there's the fact that I love to photograph just about anything that will catch my eye -- birds, flowers, people, cars, junk, hot babes, dead opossums, you-name-it. If it has something about it that recommends itself to the eye, I think it's worth shooting. As I see it, if you're walking past something that has obvious beauty and decide not to shoot it because, well, someone's going to make fun of you for shooting it, you've given up a little bit of the joy that made you want to be a photographer in the first place. Part of the beauty of the Ali vs. Liston image is the fact that it puts the viewer there at ringside. It captured the climactic moment that makes people want to go to boxing matches. And that was a good part of the rationale behind my shot choices while I was out in California -- to capture what I saw while I was there and to give the people who will look at my photos (the vast majority of whom are non-photographers) a sense of what I saw while I was there. Regrettably or not, a great deal of what I saw was flowers and bugs and the sort of thing that real photographers would consider cliche. I'm comfortable with that, just as I'm comfortable with the notion that people on the list who see what I've posted will say, Well, it looks like Walt yanked out the K-x and ran out to the flower patch again. Pass! In the end, I guess my view is that, even though some images are naturally more compelling than others, there's no reason not to photos that other people will like. There's no crime in making non-photographers smile, even if it does curl the upper lip of your photographic betters. -- Walt --

These flahrs are set about 18 off of the privacy fence, and they extend about 20 feet into the distance with highway, a utility pole and a house across the street. To the right is about a half-acre of open lawn and another house. It's all really clunky looking, really. They're in fairly good shape, because by the time I was gaming regularly we were either using ADD or, more often, a variety of home-grown rule systems loosely based on ADD. The most common variation was one that would be recognised by an average RPG player of today - using mana points, rather than the fire(ball)-and-forget magic system of by-the-book DD/ADD. I've also got a complete set of Dragon magazine up to issue 250 or so (including all 7 issues of the pre-cursor Tactical Studies Rules), and a fair assortment of other gaming accessories from those days. My subscription to Dragon started around issue 60, I believe, but I was able to fill in most of the early gaps in the late '80s by scouring sales I found on this newfangled usenet newsgroups world (including one generous gamer who sold me 30 early issues at face, including half a dozen issues from the first three years; the only issue that really forced me to pay collector prices was issue #1). Yeah, I'd say you have me beat by a pretty good margin, John! I probably played my first round of ADD in 1983, or so. You must be sitting on a small fortune in collector's items. I haven't played since I got out of high school -- before the 2nd edition Player's Handbook came out with the new classes. There were about six or seven guys I played with regularly, and I don't think we ever played a single round by-the-book -- though we had good intentions. And we always had a good time, which was the important thing. Eventually, though, it got to the point where we all had pet characters that we larded up to the point of invincibility, which took the sport out of it. Still, it kept a bunch of small-town kids entertained and out of trouble during summer vacations. Aside from the price and low-light performance, the video capability and in-camera HDR on my K-x were two of the biggest selling points for me. The darkness of the foliage was semi-intentional. There was some nice sun running across the petals, and an unappealing background, so I stopped the aperture down two stops after metering the light in hopes of obliterating the background and preserving the sunlit parts. When I looked at it, I was pretty pleased with the results, thinking it had a break of dawn look to it. The background is a fairly ugly, dog-eared slat privacy fence -- but not quite in the rustic sense of ugly just yet. I suppose a bit more greenery would give it more of a real spring daffodil look, though. But, getting that would have necessitated the bland, distracting background given my skill level. Thanks for having a look. I'll see if I can finagle a better shot out of them sometime tomorrow. -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Why is it that whenever someone raises this point, they always fail to recognize that the people who are subjected to waterboarding also are subjected to it in training. They know how it works. Thanks, Larry! That reminds me of the old saw about the difference between Baptists and Catholics: Catholics will say hi to you at the liquor store. :-) And yes, that would be a great place to try a little layering of bracketed exposures. I was strolling down the sidewalk with friends when I took this one, and didn't want to hold everyone else up, so I just turned on the camera, popped it into landscape and fired. The sky just happened to be a really beautiful shade of blue that day. One of these days, I really do need to get back downtown and shoot some of the older buildings before they get turned to dust in an earthquake -- and it won't take much of one to do it. -- Walt On 3/20/2011 5:45 AM, Larry Colen wrote: On Mar 18, 2011, at 1:29 PM, frank theriault wrote: On Fri, Mar 18, 2011 at 4:19 PM, Walter Gilbertldott...@gmail.com wrote: A shot I took on the way into the bar I went to yesterday for St. Pat's to have a Guinness or two. Though with those dark shadows in contrast with the sunlit side it is one of those cases where I would just autobracket my raw exposures, just in case I ever get around to doing HDR. I don't go for that wild tone mapping HDR style, but there are times it would be nice to be able to pull more detail out of the highlights and shadows if the shot turns out to be a keeper. It occurs to me that with the K-5, it has so much more dynamic range at low ISO, I should increase my bracketing range, at least at low ISO. Lovely old church, well captured. Love the deep blue sky! Glad to hear y'all are making steady (if slow in some areas) progress. I do love Nashville, having had some of the best times of my youth down there. Re: PESO: Episcopal Church (across the street from the bar)
Thanks again, Frank! There are some lovely old buildings in the downtown area. One of the more beautiful ones is an old bank building that now houses a law firm. It's a stately, dignified old structure with granite columns where my granddad once ran a concessions stand in the lobby. Unfortunately, it's kind of tough to get a good shot of it because of where it's situated, and the newer buildings that have gone up next to it since I was a kid. I'll have to get out there one night and see if I can do some creative composition, though. -- Walt On 3/18/2011 3:29 PM, frank theriault wrote: On Fri, Mar 18, 2011 at 4:19 PM, Walter Gilbertldott...@gmail.com wrote: A shot I took on the way into the bar I went to yesterday for St. Pat's to have a Guinness or two. I'm in the process of trying to Frankenstein another couple of years out of my already ancient PC by upgrading the video card. I've already managed to max out the memory to 3GB and have added a 500 GB hard drive. Now, I just need to upgrade the video from the pathetic GeForce-2 32MB AGP card to the ATI Radeon X1600 PRO 512MB AGP card I recently picked up from eBay. Everything I've been able to unearth says that the card ought to be compatible with my mother board, which Gigabyte nForce3 250 MCP AGP 8x. I have a 400-watt power supply, so I'm fairly certain I'm getting enough power to run the thing. Problem is, when I seat it into the AGP slot and connect it the VGA, the thing simply will not boot and there is no signal going to the monitor whatsoever, though there is power going to the card and the fan is clearly operating. I tried disabling the current drivers for the old card before installing it -- same result. I tried installing the legacy drivers for the Radeon beforehand, as well -- which somehow managed to disable my USB wireless adapter until I ran a system restore. I've gone into the BIOS to see if there are any settings I might be able to change -- voltage, manually enabling AGP 8x, etc., but have been unable to find anything that would seem to be the problem. Any ideas what may be my problem (aside from the fact that I'm using a PC with Win XP, which there's not much I can do about at the moment? Thanks! Walt Bet it's your power supply. Try to find an online power calculator to see what your configuration needs. (ASUS has one but it may only cover their products) Then assume that your 400W supply is about 60% efficient (which is possibly generous) and see what the shortfall is. Then you can work out how much nominal power you need. Add about 20% for luck. Frankenputers are good but you need to start at the back end. Then you can go on virtually (ha!) permanently. Thank, Mike. That's what I was afraid of. I am running a few peripherals off that power supply, so I'm probably not getting the best output to the card, now that you mention it. I really can't complain about this old thing. I plunked down a little over $400 to have it built six years ago, and it's treated me a lot better than I've treated it. Still zips along pretty well for the most part, though I finally had to do something in order to deal with RAW and TIF files, which I'm just going to have to do if I'm ever going to get the most out of my camera. Re: OT: Win XP (SP3)graphics card issue
Thanks, Matthew! That's exactly what I needed. Looks like I'll need at least 500 watts. I sort of figured the OS wouldn't be the issue, since I thought at the very least the basic driver set would load even if the card wasn't compatible. But, I've been asking and looking around, and I kept encountering You have to uninstall your old drivers. So, I thought maybe there was just something I didn't understand about how video works. My first suspicion was voltage levels, but it just seemed to me that an AGP 8x-compatible mobo would have the proper voltage settings for an 8x card. I wouldn't think there'd be any variation there, given that everything started going to PCI-E right about the time it came into being. Still looking to see what kind of prices I can come up with on power supplies. I have a couple of geek-squad type buddies (one of whom built this system for me) to check in with and see if they may have a good deal.
