Of course. And that’s almost always the case. With chaos come flat screen TVs
and Ait Jordan’s. And the anarchists love it as well.

Particularly when times are as tough as they are right now.

Considering how perilously close we are to some terribly hazardous topics of

move on to something we can all agree on, like slamming Kenny boy or something.

Yep. Didn’t someone say they saw Kenny boy coming out of Central with a new

the three other cops involved have been fired, and they have been

Re: Central Camera in Chicago and PDMLs Year End Quote List

2020-06-02 Thread Mark C
I'm sorry to hear. this. Central Camera is always a stop for me when I'm
in Chicago, and several years ago I had an enjoyable and informative
conversation with Mr. Flesh, who was working the film counter at the
time. He certainly had an interesting perspective on the evolution of
photography over the years. I hope it reopens, though so much of the
store's charm lay in the old and odd items tucked away in the store's
nooks and crannies, probably irreplaceable.

I've been quite surprised by the amount of support that the rioters seem to
have. I'm astonished that someone whose business has been destroyed is also in
that cadre. Race relations in the USA must be even worse than I envisaged.

The looters have stolen from the protesters - obliterated their message - as
much as they have stolen from the merchants.

You won't see that image of Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd's neck after
a couple of weeks, but videos of looters carrying big screen TVs out of Walmart
are going to get continuous airplay until after the November election.

The protesters have support.

The rioters & looters are hiding behind those protesters, stealing from them
just as much as they're stealing from merchants.

The rioters DON'T have that support, but I doubt most people will understand the

Of course. And that’s almost always the case. With chaos come flat screen TVs
and Ait Jordan’s. And the anarchists love it as well.

What’s worse is there seems to be a lot of evidence that a lot of the
destruction is caused not by people protesting the murder of George Floyd but
by people whose goal is to sow discord and make things worse.

Thanks Christine. I bought quite a bit of gear at Central in the ‘70s. Lots of
good memories there.

I too am angry — horrified in fact — over the killing of the black man at the
hands of a lunatic cop. I hope he’s eventually charged with murder 1 and spends
the rest of his life in prison. But I don’t share Don’s lack of anger at the
looters and arsonists. Destroying other people's property and lives
accomplishes nothing positive. It only paints the protesters as insincere and a
danger to society.

November? There will always be bad cops, although they’re a minority. Trump is
a jackass, but he didn’t recruit them. And there will always be those who loot
and destroy in the wake of a tragedy. They did it on Obama’s watch and they’ll
do it again if Biden makes it to the White House. It’s the sad truth.

Sorry to read this. Mr. Flesh seems to be quite a character. We should
have more of those.

Let's all hope this madness will be over for good in November.

Central Camera in Chicago and PDMLs Year End Quote List

2020-06-01 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone!

I hope you and your families are well and safe during these very difficult
times.

I thought I’d share a photography related story. Many of you probably know of
Central Camera store located downtown Chicago. It’s a quirky but fun camera
store, which has been in business for 121 years, founded 1899. Don Flesh is
the 3rd generation owner; his grand-father started the business; Flesh is aged
72.

Sadly, Central Camera suffered looting and was burned out. Flesh is confident
he can get the store back up and running, which is good. He is also not angry
and stands “with the African American community in solidarity.”

On the one hand I share this story because, well, this is a photography list
and this is a photography story and I thought photographers on the list would
be interested.

But on the other hand I thought I’d highlight two Flesh quotes that would have
definitely made our PDML Quote List that Mark Roberts puts together every year
had Flesh been a PDMLer.

Quote #1: “I wanted to go in, but the looters, there were so many people
walking by and I was a little bit shy and fearful and all I had was an umbrella
that was closed, and I didn’t think I could knock out everybody. No Rambo
here,” he said.

Quote #2: “Flesh started the live interview by noting that he had run out of
film and his phone had died so he was unable to photograph the scene. Asked
for his parting thoughts, he said, ‘I hope everybody is safe. Everybody should
learn a lesson. What is the lesson? Be prepared. Have more film in your
pocket.’”
