Re: Warning about LR6.0 [solution found, issue resolved]

2015-04-24 Thread Stan Halpin
At least I think the issue is resolved.

Background on OSX for those not familiar: OS-X offers a “toolbar”, a display of
icons representing generally programs or functions. The user chooses what
programs/functions are included. Drag-and-drop an application icon/thumbnail
onto the toolbar and you now have an active alias hotspot which you can click
to start up a program. Drag-and-drop an icon from the toolbar to the desktop
and the link is destroyed in a puff of smoke.

Last evening I removed the LR5 link from my toolbar. Went to my Applications
folder to get the LR6 icon to drag over to the toolbar. My Applications folder
is sorted by Name. Much to my surprise, right there above the Adobe Lightroom
folder was a folder labled Adobe Creative Cloud. I opened the folder, found an
Uninstall Icon. Clicked Uninstall, confirmed that yes I really did want to
Uninstall, and my problem seems to be solved. Lightroom 6 no longer acts as
though I am in a free-trial period for Lightroom Mobile.

Whether the installation of Adobe Creative Cloud was a sneaky nefarious plot by
Adobe, or if it was an option I failed to opt out of during LR6
download/installation, or an option I mistakenly opted into during LR6
download/installation, or if it was a glitch on their end I probably will never
be sure. But the problem seems to be resolved.

paying $120/yr for something that I don’t want, don’t need, and didn’t ask for.
No complaints about the program itself, just about the Adobe hegemony and its
policies.

My recollection ..
When you first start up LR6, there's an notification on screen that asks if you
want to synch to CC. You should turn that to off by clicking the control.
Otherwise, it creates a trial account based on your Adobe ID.

Turn off the account in your preferences. That's all.

When you first start up LR6, there's an notification on screen that asks if
you want to synch to CC. You should turn that to off by clicking the control.
Otherwise, it creates a trial account based on your Adobe ID.

Turn off the account in your preferences. That's all.

Actually, one of the first places I looked was Preferences. Discovered a tab
for Mobile. Clicked that tab and found the following options available to me:
Join
Delete All Data
and
More Account Info Online

and a checkbox for Prevent system sleep during sync

I did the Delete all Data and then clicked the More Account Info Online button
which took me to the Adobe account login page. I logged in, went through all of
the tabs on My Account page, found nothing that showed that I had requested a
Mobile trial, no way to disable it. (I did find that I hadn’t recently updated
my street address and got that taken care of so this whole experience isn’t all
bad!)

I hate it when I am forced to opt out of something, which seems to be something
I missed during installation. If I can’t turn it off, I can always disable my
wifi while using LR for the next 29 days.

Re: Warning about LR6.0

A couple of things I have learned over the years:

Don't be an early adopter. Wait at least a couple of months for others
to find the bugs, quirks and weaknesses in new software.

Don't install anything from Adobe without first setting up a software
firewall like ZoneAlarm to prevent it from phoning home. (Of course
this isn't an option with the subscription model but that's not a
problem for me.)

I am not usually an early adapter but was intrigued by the HDR and pano
features. So far the program seems to work just fine. No glitches, no major
changes to adapt to. My only issue is with this added “bonus” of a free trial
of Mobile which I somehow got into. I can work around it, but it is an
annoyance.

RE: Warning about LR6.0

2015-04-23 Thread Igor PDML-StR

In many (some?) places, the bandwidth is not a problem.
(E.g. in my area Suddenlink has recently upgraded all the plans,
with the slowest plan available being 15 Mbps down/ 1.5 Mbps up.
This exceeds what T1 offers (1.44/1.44), even for the up direction.
And the second level above that (which used to be 8 Mpbs some 6-7 years
ago, when I signed up for it) is 50/5.

However, the problem is in the traffic monthly cap. With my 50/5, it is
only 250 GB per month. And as far as I know, that's the main limiting
factor with most ISPs (at least with the major cable-internet provider).

Now, speaking of the initial problem in this thread, I wrote about it
in a separate thread (my message seems to have been delayed for several
hours):

Stan, I suspect it might be related to the problem you experienced.

I think it depends where you are. Over here I have 76mb fibre optic and a
very fast wifi and the whole cloud thing works really well.

I am not sure what we pay Charter for internet as part of a TV/Internet bundle.
Over the last few years they have upgraded the speed a couple of times with no
increase in rates. No cap on traffic. Speed as of a speed-test a couple of
minutes ago is 26.62/4.38 Mbps Download/Upload speed. Which = 3.33 / .55 MB/sec
transfer rate. T2+ IIRC I know I can increase that by moving around a couple of
walls and 40-50 feet closer to the wifi box. So bandwidth is not that big an
issue for me. Usually, on a good day, when the stars align ...

Photoshop. I might want to explore Mobile if I had the time and if it had
different features and if it allowed me to use something other than Adobe as my
cloud storage site. But for now, I don’t want it and have not asked for it.

But when I open LR6.0, it tries to synch my 150k photos to my Cloud account and
displays a little note that I have 29 days left in my free Mobile trial. When I
log into my Adobe account, my only option with respect to my magical 30-day
free trial to Mobile is to purchase it. I just want it to GO AWAY! Adobe Help
Chat and Forums are basically dead due to the volume of people probably with
problems like mine. You may want to wait a few months before going to 6.0, give
them a chance to add a STOP button that lets you off the Cloud.
