Rich's original announcement did mention the ability to download it on his
webpage at www.rwapsoftware.co.uk/SBASIC_reference_manual_online where it
mentions being able to download PDF, HTML or Epub versions.

For context, re file sizes, my PDF for the Atmel AtTiny85 micro-controller
is 234 pages and 3.8 Mb in size. The SuperBASIC Manual in PDF is
currently, as of November 4th, 944 pages and is only 2.2 Mb in size.
That's not bad for 4 times the number of pages at 0.57 times the size. ;-)

But, it will be getting bigger ..

Re: [Ql-Users] Withdrawal of my personalSoftwarePreservation Project

2016-07-12 Thread Ian Burkinshaw

Hi All

Having being away for a week, I was so surprised at the reaction and
comments to Rich's announcement.

I have total respect for what Rich achieved with the preservation project.
And his reasons for giving up on it. However I do feel we have most likely
hit the limit of what can be achieved. Since authors have either:-

Sadly pasted away (I know a few have)

Do not want to engage with the QL community any more, for what even reason,
we have to respect that.

Or simply are not contactable, due to change of address and /or e-mail. They
may not even have e-mail, not unknown.

Having tried to run down a few myself I know the frustration.

Having read all the responses to Rich's original statement the real issue is
the trolls. I have no problem with debate or free speech. But if these
people wish to debate, then they should stand by their statements by
identifying themselves. Also making comments with due respect and manners,
personal insults do not help and are not acceptable, if they really want to
change things. If they do not, then their comments are meaning less have no
value and should be ignored. Trolls are just sad people in my opinion and
need to get a life. What a sad state we have got into with these sorts of
people. These trolls are most likely not even QL users, and have no idea
what a QL is. If I am wrong, then that is very sad for the small group of QL
users that we are. The idea all software should be free is ridiculous the
choice on the matter lays with the software authors nobody else. It is a
shame more authors are not more forth coming but that is the way of life and
it is not up to us or others to criticise. I do understand Rich's choice,
but I do feel the trolls have won on this won. We should all be ashamed,
that society and may be our own small community has got so disrespectfull. I
also fail to understand what Rich's commercial activities has to do with the
philanthropic work he has done to preserve QL software. I have purchased
several items from Rich including several keyboard membranes and replacement
chips, he has at all times been very prompt and professional in his
dealings. I am a big supporter for Rich and RAWP and would be a very sad day
if he gave up completely. We would all be losers without him in the QL
community. At the end of the day it down to the software authors what
happens to their software, either releasing it as freeware, if they see any
commercial value, then they have the choice of selling though RAWP or
marketing it themselves or just say no I retain copyright and that's it. The
debate about rights and wrongs of copyright is a bit pointless, this is not
going to change, and it is personal choice to follow the law or not, but be
aware it only takes one to cause a lot of trouble, and penalties are very
hard. I know of people who have been bankrupted, because they did not know
they had even infringed copyright. Happens a lot in the music industry for
example.

All the best Rich get better soon.

What the whole thing boils down to is probably:

Do I care if someone is blocking my driveway?

Of course you do - it's directly affecting you.

Do I care if someone is blocking my neighbor's driveway?
Of course you should - they will probably fight and make your life a
misery (or damage your car while fighting)

Do I care if someone is blocking my neighbor's driveway that hasn't been
used by them for 25 years?
Turns out the blocking car was your neighbour's all along who you had not
bothered to speak to for some time, and without you knowing your neighbour
was growing and supplying drugs, the car "blocking" the driveway was there
to hinder police getting in. Oh and they put the registered address for
the car down as yours, so you got into trouble when they were eventually
caught. Result for us all, one less QLer because you chose to disregard
something you wrongly thought was irrelevant..

In all but the first case, I don't - It's none of my business. And in the
last case I'd find it a bit ridiculous if I did.
OK, my writing above is almost completely false, totally ridiculous and
designed only to make you read it to see where it was going and if it was
relevant. So, just because it seems irrelevant, don't dismiss it out of
hand.

(Actually, number 2 happened to a friend of mine some years ago, so not
that irrelevant).

Hi Ian,

If you open up the File Manager and select the SMSQmulator.jar file.
Performing a right click to get the properties of the file. There should
be a tab called "Open With" to define the application to open the .jar

Just point toward the Java Runtime and the double clicking the Jar file
will load the Java runtime and then the jar file.

Just like in Windows

Hi Ian,

'ls -l' to show detailed listing will show who owns files.

Just because it is in your directory doesn't mean you own it, you could
have accidentally done something like 'sudo unzip smsqemulator.zip'

There is nothing in SMSQmulator or java that requires root to run so
something is wrong.

Re: [Ql-Users] Instrutions for running SMSQmulator on Raspberry Pi

2016-02-17 Thread Ian Burkinshaw

Hi Marcos

Checked Java was there and correct with $ java -version
That proved to be OK.

Then $ sudo java -jar /home/pi/Downloads/SMSQmulator.jar

Also forgot that the operating system is case sensitive, the 'D' in Download
being the culprit.

Still not able to double click on the file in file manager to launch.

So the trouble was I needed to start it as a super user (sudo) and case
sensitive in the command line. Also the pi needs to be running in GUI mode.
So entering the command line in LXterminal.

So now looking into setting up a short cut to launch from the GUI.

Running on a Pi2 and the speed is not bad as far as I can see.

Making it portable, by running off batteries, using a USB power block. Give
a few hours operation between charges. The touch screen removes the need for
a mouse and Florence the on screen keyboard and also setting the config to
boot straight to the GUI.

/home/pi/downloads/SMSQmulator.jar. Which I can see in the file manager.

Tried with both with and without the sudo at the start of the command line.

Hi,

do not unzip the jar file itself.

Just Double-click on the jar file.

That should do it.

Else, from a command line, type "java -jar
<entire_path_and_name_of_jar_file".

[Ql-Users] Qdock and Maqnifier

2014-12-14 Thread Ian Burkinshaw
Hi All

I guess most know, but just in case. Dilwyn has done his magic again.

First with Qdock, a graphical program launching system. To be found at
http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/qdock/index.html
I have been using this program over the last few weeks and is very good,
especially if you do not want a full desk type program such as LaunchPad or
QDT. It does have a low back ground load on QL systems which for some maybe
important. This program is not freeware, but at a cost of £10 is well worth the
money. Do please support Dilwyn and the development of new programs. It is so
what we need. I have submited a review to Quanta, so look out for that. There
is also a freeware program called SPRV to view the sprites in Qdock or for that
matter any sprites. Very usfully little program this as well.

Second is a freeware program that Dilwyn put up only the other day called
Maqnifier http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/misc/index.html. Again a very usefull little
program, it will magnifier a selected area of the screen by a factor of X2 to
X8, user selectable. For use with high resolution, greater than the standard
512 screen. But Qdock and Maqnifier push the QL platform and SMSQ to the
limits. Dilwyn has sluged this program for good reason as explained in the
program notes. My only comment or advice is, give the program time to update.
It take 500ms to start the update process at the default settings, which as
Dilwyn points out is the best setting, that does seem to be the case. Also when
reading text files use the cursor mode to follow text much easier I find, and
pointer mode for graphics. This is selecable from the main Maqnifier screen so
is not a probem to change from one mode to the other.

However my main point is, do buy Qdock and support our QL programmers like
Dilwyn. It will not make him a rich man but does give him and others the
motivation to do more, if he can find the time.

This post is entirly my own, no input from Dilwyn at all. No, I am not being
paid either.

Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

You may have seen my e-mail on QL-User asking him to contact me, still no

I have even checked my spam files, nothing there.

Have you heard anything ?

My plan now is, I will write again with a warning that I will go fully

I have documentation that he has had my money, but I have no documentation

Surprise! It only took 6 years, but finally there is another official
beta of QPC ;-) Don't hesitate because it's called a beta, it's very
stable, I only want people to test the new keyboard driver first
before calling it a release.

It includes the latest SMSQ/E v3.16.

New features:
 - Added new keyboard driver that doesn't rely on DirectX anymore.
DirectX support in Windows became worse and worse over the years,
so now QPC can use the Windows keyboard driver. Much work has been
but into this feature to be as compatible as possible, so I hope
it works for all countries and that even KEYROW continues to make
   some sense.
SMSQ/E keyboard tables like the ones created by Clavier will NOT
work with this driver, but the old driver is still in there, just
select SMSQ/E as the keyboard driver in the configuration
   dialog.

 - Basic support for floppy disc images. Images can be configured on
boot but currently not changed afterwards.

 - Various bug fixes including a probably more stable screen driver.

 - Some CPU fixes thanks to George Gwilt.

While I'm at it, does anybody still use the fullscreen mode? I'm
considering moving away from DirectX completely, which would also get
rid of native full screen mode. But in times of LCDs it's probably not
that important anymore anyway.

Download link: http://www.kilgus.net/qpc/downloads.html

Cheers, Marcel

Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today

2013-03-20 Thread Ian Burkinshaw
Sad though this is, I have to say it seems me inevitable this was going to
happen sooner or later. The constant increase in postal rates is self
defeating, the more they go up, the less poeple send. Look at Christmas
cards, card pennies, post 40p, just out of step. I bet we have all cut back
on Christmas cards, for this reason. Many professional producted magazines
are going down the same road to electronic, to keep costs under control. So
we are not alone with this issue.

I have also to say writing for QLToday spured me on to write my hardware
articals. It was a focal point as a publication and deadlines. Without
deadlines we all go I will do that next week, then is two weeks and so it
goes on and it never gets done.

As to Quanta magazine, it is not the same. The Quanta magazine format does
not lend itself to 2,500 word with pictures articals. It is what it is a
club magazine. However I do have some idea's for relativly short articals,
that was I was going to write for QLToday. So they may appear in the Quanta
magazine.

Back to a QLToday replacement, my personal prefence would be a pdf based
publication. Since it would still offer the focus, that to me web sites
don't give.

The only issue with pdf or any other electronic format, is are we casting
asside people who still use QL's and are just not interested in the
internet, or have connection (slow) problems.

The Raspberry PI has a pdf magazine, worth looking at to see what they do.

lots of good stuff going on. But it does not all get written up for the

Seems to me, down to a very small number that contribute. One item from

Really - so one leg is sending letters (8-)#
You mean 'fewer' of course.

the less people send means the same number of people send less in
total.

Not at all, but maybe it is different in Glasgow (8-)#

'Less' and 'Fewer' are referring to 'people' not the letters.

Fewer - when the noun can be counted. People, marbles
Less - when it cannot. Flour, petrol.

Why say there is less sand on the beach when you could, if you had time,

The other meaning would presumably be written as

the smaller the number of people who send

Anyway postage is rather high now and certainly to be avoided if

Hi all,

Mostly copied over from qlforum.co.uk, so if you read it there, sorry for
the redundancy!

Today I ran a loop on an unexpanded QL in monitor mode (US model, has weird
interrupts) and then with a 68EC020, a GC and a SGC.

100 PRINT DATE$
110 FOR loop = 0 to 10 : NEXT loop
120 PRINT DATE$

It's a good timewaster. It just moves things around, takes a certain amount
of time.

Machine Time
Bare QL 2m17s
My 14MHz EC020 1m01s
My 020+RAM 0m39s
Gold Card 0m29s
Super Gold Card 0m12s

My first line is an MC68EC020 running just pure QL hardware. I can't get it
reliable above 14MHz so that was the speed for the test.

My second, faster line is with 512MB of 16-bit SRAM added, and a simple PAL
address decoder that allows the 020 to access the memory in its native
width.

Rounding off, with QL = 1, basic 020@14MHz = 2.3, 020+RAM = 3.5, GC = 4.8,
SGC = 12.5

So I have a little way to go, I think. However, 2.3x achieved by around £40
of components is... nifty.

If this gets people wildly excited, I'll write up a how-to and a schematic

New one on me, but that is not difficult.

Just downloaded it, very interesting. Also very small download at 2.44MB.
Must admit I have always kept away from machine code. But this looks like a
very good way to start learning. The simulator is very good, since you can
step line by line though your code and see what is happening to the
registers.

Just tried tutorial 1, and it all made perfect sense.

I am sure even for the most advanced developers out there, the
EASy68KQuickRef guide is most useful.

I would say that is a very good find.

Now all we need now is a QL/SMSQ version !!!

Stumbled across something seemingly useful for 68K assembler developers, not
sure if it’s been mentioned before but here goes.

It’s something called Easy68K, an editor, assembler and simulator for the
68000 (integrated development environment), running on Windows. (OK Norman,
I know...)

The website description is:

“EASy68K is a 68000 Structured Assembly Language IDE. EASy68K allows you
to edit, assemble and run 68000 programs on a Windows PC or Wine. No
additional hardware is required. EASy68K is an open source project

Hi Norman

I do read them. But up until recently I have not had the time, to get down

learn it properly, I am sure it would make much more sense.

The way Easy68K, displays things does make it more understandable, at least
to me anyway.

For example I have never realy understood which registers are used for what.
Also managing the stack is not clear to me either. But to be fair I have not
studied it that closely.

I realy must go back to the start of your series in QLT, and re-read it all,
and start to work though your examples.

I have played with some the PRT stuff in your more recent articles, which
has been of great interest to me. But have to admit I have not understood it
all. That is down my lack of knowledge, not your work. Since one of my

Re: [Ql-Users] SMSQmulator

2013-01-28 Thread Ian Burkinshaw

Hi

I have done another test, prompted by the comments regarding re-writing to
the screen. My little test program, did mean that in every loop the screen
was completly re-writen. If my understanding is correct.

So since I have a fairly complex boot program, loading extentions and
sorting out between different platforms etc. It has some screen stuff as
well. So is most likly more representive of a real program. I now measure
3.57 times slower than QPC. So this clearly more complicated than I first
thought.

I did not mean to miss lead anybody, I think SMSQmulator is great. I just
did not know that screen writing would have such an effect. But clearly it
does. I did say people should check the programs they want to use on
SMSQmulator. I just did this to offer some feedback.

It also explains why I did not find any problem with speed using xchange for
example.

Do you think you could send me a small file (one line basic would be
enough) with that, so that I could test it?

Sure, sending one off list.

Re: [Ql-Users] SMSQmulator

2013-01-26 Thread Ian Burkinshaw

Hi

I have done some simple speed tests between QPC2 and SMSQmulator.

The system I am running on is a WINdoes XP with service pack 3. On as
2.93GHz Celeron processor with 2G of ram. With NORTON 360 running in the
background, that is my firewall and anti virus program.

From clicking on the SMSQmulator JAVA exe file to displaying the SMSQmulator
window takes 15 seconds, then loading and running my boot file a further 10
seconds. I am running a screen size of 1024 x 600. Don't know if that makes
any difference.

If I run a simple program as follows:-

100 FOR a=1 TO 1000
110 PRINT a
120 NEXT a

On SMSQmulator it takes 2 min, 42 seconds to run.

On QPC2 the same program runs in 5 seconds

So SMSQmulator is 32.4 times slower than QPC2 on my system.

So for programs like word processors speadsheets etc. Not a real problem.
But programs like games, I would say, not so good. However my simple program
is not representative of running real programs, so they may well run faster.
All you can do is try them as see how you get on. I just did this out of
interest just to see what would happen.

HI,

I've released a new version of SMSQmulator this mornong.

Apart from a small bugfix, this nox implments copying to/from the
clipboard to the Scrap thing.

The manual shows how this can easily be automated via a hotkey.

Have fun

2013-01-24 Thread Ian Burkinshaw

Hi

The simple answer is yes. I have been running the full version of QDT with
no problem. Just a little slow but usable, at least on my system.

Such a shame that QDT will most likely never be finished. I understand the
reasons why, but still a shame.

is it possible to run the trial version of QDT under SMSQmulator ?

Best regards,
Petri

Hi Wolfgang

Just tried SMSQmulator on my Windows XP system. Works fine. Ran my normal
QDT setup, a little slower than my QPC2 setup. But worked first time, no
problems. Great work.
