Re: [Ql-Users] Today 30 years ago...

2016-04-23 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Hi QLers,

April 23rd, what does this date say to us? Saint George's Day, The
Bayerische Reinheitsgebot (regarding the ingredients of beer) was signed 500
years ago, William Shakespeare died on that day 400 years ago, the Sinclair
ZX Spectrum was launched 34 years ago. Great day in history!

The QL’s official life span was from January 1984 to April 1986 when Amstrad
axed the QL. Well, I’ve seen some Samsung QLs manufactured in May 1986, but
those were most likely built that month on behalf of the last valid order
from Sinclair Research Ltd.

Although 2 ¼ years sound like a short period and I cannot remember how long
it felt back in the 80s, I personally felt exactly how long it is when I
judge the “QL is 30” activities which started on the QL’s 30th launch
anniversary back on January 12th 2014. Even I was busy in both life and work
I’ve spent quite an amount of time (several hundred hours) for and with the
QL during the last 26 months. To name just the major milestones like the “QL
is 30” website http://www.qlis30.org.uk/, “QL IS 30 2014 – THE
DISTRIBUTION”, the ZX-TEAM-meetings 2014, 2015 and 2016 in Germany, meeting
Rick Dickinson and David Karlin again in 2014 and 2015, attending La Nuit
des Musées 2014 in Switzerland, the QLis30 dinner and workshop in Scotland,
testing and integrating new versions of SMSQ/E and SMSQmulator, updates to
QL/E and THE DISTRIBUTION, this was a very intense QL period, at least for
me.

Today is the release of the final version 3.04 of “QL IS 30 2014 – THE
DISTRIBUTION”. This marks the end of my “QL is 30” activities.

QL forever!

Cheers,
Urs

Wow. Now I'm feeling old. Maximillian (hope I remembered his name

Time flies. It really does.

The end of the QL was the worst part of the Amstrad buyout, but the
spectrum did live on though.

[Ql-Users] Today is a very special day for me...

2016-04-13 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Dear QLers,

In that week 30 years ago the Sinclair computer business was bought by
Amstrad and the QL was axed. It was that Sunday after the press conference
when the message did arrive here in Switzerland. I was in my first months
with my first personal QL so the news hit me hard.

On today's date 16 years ago my son was born. This was one of the greatest
moments in my entire life.

I'm currently in the process of releasing the next version of THE
DISTRIBUTION. Recent updates of SMSQ/E and SMSQmulator have been worked in.
Major changes and enhancements are in the QL/E part of THE DISTRIBUTION. The
start-up sequence (aka BOOT program) of QL/E has been reworked and enhanced
to enable QL/E to also run on QPC1, uQLx (Raspberry PI), QL with QL-SD
(should also run on the MIST) and Q-emuLator. As a goody QL/E now comes with
Per Witte's D-Miner game and an adapted version of Francois Lanciault's 2048
game.

While QL/E is ready for release today, completion of THE DISTRIBUTION may
take some more days.

Download link see message footer below.

QL forever!

Hi Urs,

BTW: Anniversary website http://www.qlis30.org.uk has updated today with

Thanks. As for the story by Jürgen Malberg, did you read it? I was
actually disappointed that he only wrote there was a successor on 68040
basis. This sounds like the Atari/Amiga lines of 68K history went
technologically ahead of the QL. In fact the Q60 was one of very few 68K
machines where the mainboard was directly designed for the 68060.

Yes, I did. It’s a relatively short ( 12’000 characters) story of the QL’s
features (3/4) and history (1/4) with very nice rendered illustrations. Some
details are just not that accurate (yes, he had better wrote 68040/68060) or
- even worse - very few are just wrong (“Sinclair Ltd. sold to Amstrad”, it
was “Amstrad bought the Sinclair computer business and brand name on
computers”). Don’t get me wrong, the article is great. But if offers little
news for QLer like me but may be a great and compact story for many others
(non QLers or those back to the QL).

In the spirit of Urs' virtual QLis30 suggestion I thought it would be
a good idea to look back 10 years on how we celebrated the 20th and
21st Birthdays of the QL. I was responsible for the activity
programmes for both QL2004 and QLis21 and I also hosted web pages for
both shows.

As a reminder I have reposted both web pages on my website. If nothing
else it shows what the hot QL topics were 10 years ago. It is also
interesting to note the detail we went into on travel arrangements and
accommodation.

The web pages are accessed from my news page:

www.gwicks.net/justwords.htm

For those who are saddened that there are still no firm plans for a
QLis30 event, the situation today is not so different from that of 10
years ago. Quanta had behaved in a similar way in 2003 giving the
impression it would organise QL2004 although it had no intention of
doing so. It was only at the very end of 2003 that we realised that
there was no chance of a Quanta QL2004 and decided at the beginning of
2004 to hold the event in Eindhoven. Three of us Jochen Merz, Sjef
v.d. Molengraaf and myself set up ourselves as the ad hoc committee.

On the first of February I met the Quanta committee and the then
chairman was scathing about our plans. I didn't realise what a puny
little organisation Sin_QL_Air was that would be incalpable of running
a local show let alone an international one. QL2004 was doomed to
failure and the entire committee smirked at me.

The irony was that I was the only person present in the room who had
been a member of Sin_QL_Air for 7 years. (The inverted commas are
because under Dutch law Sin_QL_Air had donors nor members.) I also
knew that in the 1990s Sin_QL_Air had run an international show once a
year that was a high spot on the QL calender.

It was only on 27th March we had our first face to face meeting as
organising committee and we only had one other on 12th June. The event
was held on 16th October.

After the June meeting we decided to set up a dedicated show website
that was regularly updated and this proved to be very effective in
raising interest in the event. Even so it was a nerve-wracking time
because the activity programme only got off the ground at the last
minute. Jon Dent's offer to attend followed by Nasta's intention to
come finally got the activity programme off the ground.

At the last minute we had a disappointment when the school refused to
let us use some facilities such as their projector and PA system and
we had do some some rapid improvisation. However we had visitors from
nine or ten different countries including most of the developers and
those of us who were at the New Canton restaurant after the show will
never forget the atmosphere.

QL2004 gave a much needed boost to the QL community. There is still
time to organise another boost by a QLis30 event,

Re: [Ql-Users] Today.

2013-01-13 Thread Ade Vickers
Popular Computing Weekly magazine ordered one on the day they were announced
(probably while they were at the press office). Although they didn't get one
of the first 80-odd (the hand delivered ones?), they did get an FB ROMmed
device.

I've just picked up a bunch of old PCW mags which document from launch to
arrival (I don't actually have the official report of the launch
unfortunately); if anyone is interested in the articles, I can scan them
put them on a website.

I guess what I'm most surprised to have forgotten (although, in my defence,
on January 12th 1984 I was in fact only 10 years old), is just how MUCH
excitement the QL announcement created - and just how much disappointment
the long long delays caused.

You have to wonder if - had Sinclair waited 3 months (and hence lost out on
announcing the world's first sub-£1000 (let alone sub-£500) 32-bit computer)
- whether the QL would have had the same massive excitement and, being a
fully working machine by now, have REALLY set the world on fire, instead of
being comparatively restricted to those of us who saw a bloody clever thing
when we saw it... (in fairness... it was my Dad who spotted its potential,
I'd have probably been happy with anything that called itself a computer...)

Cheers,
Ade.

Yes, first customers had to wait a long time for their QLs to arrive.
 Reference http://www.qlvsjaguar.homepage.bluewin.ch/QLchronology.html:
End of April 1984 the first batch of 89 QL's were shipped to
 customers by car (SST).
During May and June 1984 the backlog was reduced and towards
autumn enough working QLs were available resulting in High
 Street stores stocking the QL.

IIRC the original Apple Macintosh (128K) was available the
 day after its launch!
 Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_128K)writes:
The sales of the Macintosh were strong from its initial
release and reached 70,000 units on May 3, 1984.

[Ql-Users] Today.

2013-01-12 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
On today's date 29 years ago Sinclair Research launched the Sinclair QL
professional computer. On January 12th 1984 - exactly 12 days earlier than
Steve Jobs launched the Apple Macintosh - Sir Clive Sinclair and Nigel
Searle presented the QL to the world in a Hollywood-style launch event at
the Hotel Inter Continental in London.

Today I was browsing through my collection of pictures and uploaded those
related to the launch event onto my Sinclair QL web gallery.

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=C250D8748980CE5A!3812

Beside of the pictures you'll find two Web-Links of videos related to the
launch event. The video of the press conference itself is not original
footage; it's filmed in 2009 with actors for the BBC docudrama Micro Men.
Compare the original pictures with this video and you'll see how authentic
this scene was made.

Enjoy watching!

Clive's not gay as we all know. He just married last year a blonde bombshell

The computer children of the business's marriage (ZX Spectrum 128K +2/+3)
looked terrible compared to the puristic Sinclair design by Rick Dickinson.

I have at least version 2.0 of that program (ANIMATIONSGRAFIK).

There's a video of it on YouTube (short link):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAjVWQxSeJU

This program was in German only.

Later, in 1989 the program has been reworked as ANIMATOR, translated to
English and added to the QTop package. I remember having you as distributor
for the UK. Great days!

There's also a video of QTop-ANIMATOR on YouTube:

QTop-ANIMATOR is freeware nowadays and can be found on the QL-PD/CD-R.

It is interesting to reread Colin Baskett's report on the forum at QL2000:

TARGET GROUPS:

Children: Arnould Nazarian was arguing strongly for a £100 computer aimed at
children with good graphics capabilities.

Schools: SuperBasic was a good way of teaching programming skills, but we
could not break into the educational system. (Interesting how this topic
came up this year in the Future of the QL thread.)

The elderly: Well, we have plenty of wrinklies now, but that is not what was
meant. Four years later a trader opined on this list that UK QL-ers were too
old and decrepit to make the journey to Eindhoven for QL2004. I offered to
ask Sin_QL_Air to lay on zimmer frames and nurses. He approved of the latter
but not the former.

PS Malcolm: Any chance of a Stannah Lift at the church hall for those
ancient Quanta committee members?

Loyalists: It was thought that few enthusiasts for other systems would be
interested in the QL, but since that time a few speccies have taken an
interest. And how many of you knew that Ed Milliband was a former speccie
games geek?

Tinkerers/Programmers: Largely based around the ease of QL programming
although one brave soul ventured the opinion that Visual Basic was as easy
to program as the QL.

Migrants: Now that's a naughty word these days! In those days it meant
trying to persuade PC defectors to come back to the QL. The weapon was to be
a bootable CD containing an emulator. How many years did we have to wait for
a QL on a stick?

New Users: A forlorn hope. Market was too small for hardware development,
but still OK for software. One big problem was TK2, which was not available
on PD emulator. Perhaps a help guide to QL jargon was necessary.

PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED:

Accessibility: Both QDOS and SMSQ should be in the public domain. (This was
a few years before the major licencing dispute.) Could Quanta negotiate or
purchase SMSQ? Could source code be made available? Also proper
documentation was essential. Questions were asked about the new colour
drivers and if there were not more urgent priorities.

Software: Many programs were incompatible with SMSQ and all to often the
authors could not be contacted - in some cases to contact them we would have
needed a stairway to heaven. Quanta could have a role to play here
(contacting authors - not building a stairway to heaven with or without a
Stannah Lift) and perhaps could provide money if necessary. Also important
to make clear which programs were PD and which not. Incompatibility
between QDOS and SMSQ.

INTERNET ACCESS:

The need for the QL to have internet and email access dominated the show.
The first email from a QL had just been sent and the future for QL internet
access appeared promising especially for users of the then new Q40. However
Jonathan Dent warned that there was much work to be done before working
internet and email progams would be available for the QL. In spite of this
some members left the hall claiming that we would all be emailing from our
QLs the following Christmas.

Finally amomg other business was a moan that it was impossible to get hold
of a QL - none had been advertised for about three years. Rich Mellor, where
were you when we needed you?

 Hi Geoff,

This raises the point that I raised in my last personal statement. Two
members of the present committee are retiring and unless Quanta gets new
blood on the committee - and there are only 10 nomination days left -
 then
it could be too small to be viable.

Seems to be the most important point to me, isn't it? I think, QUANTA is
 too
much overloaded with jobs and election jobs.

I am not sure what you mean by election jobs. When you handle almost
£5,000 of members' money per year, you have to have official things like
elections, reports and auditors. Otherwise you have hit the nail on the
head. Quanta has to get down to determining its core tasks and stop
indulging in fantasy schemes for which it has neither the skills nor the
resources to implement.

When I read the chairman's report last year, I was shocked by the number of
things he promised that Quanta couldn't deliver and hasn't delivered. To be
quite honest I was relieved not to be elected chairman, and when I
congratulated the winner I had the hypocritical politician's smile on my
face, but underneath I was smugly thinking You silly bugger - now you've
got to implement your promises.

I have not enjoyed sitting on the committee and hearing all the wild ideas
about a revamped website, with passwords and restricted areas and ideas for
a chat room for Quanta members only, knowing the committee were unable to do
a simple thing like keeping the site up to date,

Best Wishes,

Geoff (privately)

Hi Geoff,

This raises the point that I raised in my last personal statement. Two
members of the present committee are retiring and unless Quanta gets new
blood on the committee - and there are only 10 nomination days left - then
it could be too small to be viable.

Seems to be the most important point to me, isn't it? I think, QUANTA is too
much overloaded with jobs and election jobs.

Cheers...Ralf R.

Quanta has noted both the quality of the site and its great
features.
Congratulations.
My main problem with the Quanta site is that every time I have
 looked on
it, mainly for future events I think, it has been out of date, often
 by
 over a year.

I have simply given up looking there now, so it may be OK now (8-)#

I don't think we need 'great features' to make the Quanta site OK.

 Tony
Like most websites, when it comes to Quanta I guess we are looking
more for content and regular updating than technical brilliance. Which
is where so many 'professional' sites go wrong, at least hobbyists can
cite lack of time.

It could be said that technical brilliance is the last thing a QL site
needs anyway - we go on the QL sites to get at the content and
information, not to wait minutes for some flashy animation to
download. At least you can quickly get onto Tony Firshman's site and
hear him speak in no time at all!

I can sort of read many QL-related sites via the mono screen on my
mobile phone (OK, I was a bit bored at the time!). If we are to use
something like Lynx to browse on a QL system sites need to be kept to
fairly simple html anyway.

In my own case, I gave up on my site's 'news' page because I couldn't
find time to keep it up to date. It's hard enough ensuring that
something like my 'QL Shows' page gets kept reasonably up to date!
