Hi Hao Wang,


OpenOffice is written in a C style C++. It has some very fancy parts. 
Some core elements are written in Assembler. ;)


However C++ skills will do fine, don't be alarmed. Your Python skills 
may also be very handy if you take up our SCONs development.



So some background maybe: OpenOffice Code is written in a very special 
C++ style. It reminds me a lot more of C then C++.


While we try to make the code more C++ stylish, it is a long road, and 
we have some priorities. For example we would very much replace C style 
arrays with nice C++ vectors.


On the other hand our build environment is really patchwork. we use (and 
maintain) old dmake, but a large part has been ported to gmake. Java 
Code (which we have too) is build with ant.


And everything is interweave so you have only one command on the top. 
Due to its highly modularization approach, we have one Perl script 
orchestrating the build.


Since this is not favorable and debugging is very hard some of us do 
strongly believe that SCONs will be the solution for us. SCONs is a 
build environment utilizing python instead of make.


Especially because we want to simplify the build setup on Windows (which 
is the weakest development OS at the moment needs lots of love.)



I can advertise other cases you might be interested in. Maybe you want 
to start with learning how to build OpenOffice first. We are in the 
process in trying to recreate our build guides. We would like to here 
your feedback on the dev mailinglist.

a big deal.

Ahh, Currently we do not apply any containers. And the Jenkins facility 
I don't think we have anything that needs to be done there currently.


I have suggested to look into docker for our use, but this requires a 
lot of discussions within the project and with Infra. I plan to do this 
at some point.


I have no estimates ion timing thought.

Many in the AOO community are not native English speakers so that is not a
problem at all. Your English is far superior than what I could attempt at
Italian.


Being blessed by a family and a daily job, I can only offer my free
time to this project, and even not 100% of it. But if you will be
willing to accept my contribution, I will be honored to help.


We are all volunteers and give of what time we have to the project. Only you
can know how much of that valuable free time that you can give and we
appreciate that you are willing to give some of it to advance AOO

I think best is to do some action. We enable you as we can go along. Dev 
Channel in general is the main communication channel, and the only

channels. I can give pointers if you want.


Code development can be driven completely through github, so I think if 
you have a github account you are setup.


And we can handle everything there. Further access we can grant if needed.

you have reached out to the Apache OpenOffice project.


Apache OpenOffice is a very complex project, with very little support.

As much as I would like to give you something to do, i do not have 
anything encapsulated and prepared that can be done in a 2 week chunk 
with 2h a day.


I am sorry. The truce to be told, we have nothing prepared, and we 
currently ask people to prepare themselves what they want to do. This 
project can only support if you get stuck somewhere.


There is lots of work to do before we can think of such an offer. That 
again is one of the reasons why the project has so little support.


The lowest barrier we have is translation from English to whatever 
language, maybe we could interest you in this? what is your mother 
tough? I check then for the support in that language.

Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 should be fine.

I guess in general newest Distribution version may be more difficult to 
build then older distributions.



I would also recommend not using Distribution libraries in the first 
attempt. I would use in the first step our non distribution specific setup.

P.S.: I put the coc address of the TDF in cc, because it is very hard to

AOO and LO must fight this attitude shown by Pulkit Krishna together. I do
hope we (AOO) are not alone in this. I want to work together with LO not
against them, but my commitment will stay with OpenOffice, no matter what.

We use mailing lists to organize our work. This are mail versions of forums.

So you usually subscribe to a List, and then you will receive all mails 
that are send to this list. As does eversone else. Try always to use a 
mailing list.



Translations, or localization, is organized on the  list

I recommend you subscribe to that list, and send then a mail there.

I hope you are aware that LibreOffice (LO) have little to do with Apache 
OpenOffice (AOO).


Working on LO will not develop AOO.

But it depends on what you want to do. It is your choice.

But think on more then just writing code. Think on how is a project 
organized, what License does the Project use, and what Licensebase it is 
build on.


How the Community is structured. And then pick a choice. I wish you good 
luck with whatever you do.

We accept no applications. We accept activity. If you contribute you are
in, from the first contribution. A contribution improves OpenOffice in
any thinkable way.

You contribute by engaging the development. What development means is
that you improve OpenOffice in any way you think possible.

We accept any contribution that you do as long as we agree in the
technical benefit. We have no hierarchy, or leadership.

When we need something equal we vote as equals. And every one is heard
in the discussions or votes.

No one is going to tell you what you must do. We might help you to give
you advisories what you could do.

I try my best in this respect. But my understanding and knowledge is
only slowly growing.


So where to start.

We have a generic overview what volunteers could engage in, to have a
rough Idea at [0]

If you want to change OpenOffice code, first step is to build
OpenOffice. It is a beast on its own. [1]

We need to renew our Program documentation. I am working on it at [2]
when I find time to go on.

If you want to look at Issues to fix, you can browse Bugzilla [3] or
have a look at a try to cluster and  structure Issues [4].

We can always use help in testing, updating and research on issues.


If you have code change towards OpenOffice, small or big, whatever you

With your submission you earn merit and we will grant you more access

Hi Chris, and all others who are interested,

welcome to Apache OpenOffice.

Despite what you can read, we are basically anarchistic organized. Which
means: No one is gonna tell you what to do. It is up to you. To be
honest this is the biggest obstacle to volunteers interested in joining
OpenOffice.

To help people to find their ways we try to help to the best of our
abilities. We communicate mainly over @dev mailing list.
So feel free to ask and talk your way through. you can search the list
for answers at [0]
We have created a list of generic fields you can get active in link [1].
We have also a lot written to cwiki [1] or mwiki (architecture page) [2].

What else.
I am trying an "Epic" List at [3], trying to cluster Bugs, hoping to
create a plan how to solve multiple bugs in a workflow.
Our official bug tracker is Bugzilla [4].
You can offer code via github [5]. We accept pull request there, to make
it simple for code contributors.

So have you already looked at the code? What do you think of the
architecture? What Ideology do you follow? Clean Architecture from Uncle
Bob?
Would you stick to C / C++ or rather move OpenOffice to Java or rust? or
what are your thoughts how should OpenOffice evolve?

volunteers active and we are not good at focusing on new people how to

Where we need help is at

# review, index and restructure documentation. (Forming all information
to one concept.

# need to update themes and layout on our websides (the wiki templates
are causing issues. We need to update the CMS. Here some work has been done)

recommend in learning how to build first as suggested by Sankar)

We are really not good at getting people in the position that they can 
contribute. It involves a lot of will and determination on your behalf.

If you want to develop, I suggest to start with the basics and learn to build 
OpenOffice from code base. We have build guides on our wiki. 
You can help to improve the documentation on the wiki.

Also subscribing to d...@openoffice.apache.org and try to follow the discussion 
and try to find ways to contribute.
Very important is to ask questions and try to use the informations you have.

We had a lot off contributors over time and you might be the next
contributor to this awesome project. :)

The oldest code in OpenOffice is maybe older then Microsoft Office. What
I want to say, it might be not as easy as you might think to improve
what youz want to improve.

We recommend to build OpenOffice from code for starters. It is quite a
challenge since our build system is aged and we are in the middle of
changes.

Also we welcome everything that you seem fit to change. For Code changes
we request a Test driven development approach. We use google test library.


Welcome to OpenOffice. I hope to read from you and you hand in patches.

I am sorry, I have a hard time following your thoughts. Plus we are not
a "great someone else does it" club. We are a "do it" club.

So if you want to join you are welcome. I have the feeling some of what
you want we can already do.

Unlike MicrosoftOffice you can use in OpenOffice, c++, Java or Python in
their full glory.

That leaves a lot more options to you, creating an extension (Addon)
that can do things.

Of course we ohave also basic like language on board.

Hi we have a lot of tasks that can be done.

Our current activities are a bit focused around pootle at this moment.
Pootle is a tool that helps us to manage content of the software, like
menu names,  tooltips and help sites.

In the past it has been quite difficult to get  language changes into
OpenOffice. We are working to improve the process.

If there are more tasks to do, language wise I do not know. Best you to
get in touch on l...@openoffice.apache.org, and have a chat, what can
you do. The List is pretty much in lead here.


We have also a Wiki site, which is quite unmaintained. I think the
biggest problem here is to organize interested people. And align them
onto a plan.

If you are interested, maybe we can have a discussion on
d...@openoffice.apache.org. Maybe we find some more people who would like
to get started on this.

Then the next step would be to make a plan. And try to follow it.

report. I pick his question up. And write to @dev and @recruitment,

our project is organized completely by people like you. Some have build
skills needed or bring skills they have from their background.

All have in common that we currently do this in our free time and
unpaid. This slows down development, and makes planing unpredictable.

If someone picks the Issue up it will be fixed or like most Issues we
have, have to wait for the appropriate time to be attractive to be
looked into.


Howard has made some work on HTML5, since we support currently only
html4. Maybe he reads this and decides to look into it, maybe he sticks
to his plans.

Maybe someone else wants to look into it. IT is completely open to those
who volunteer.


I have developed a strategy to try to bundle Packages to advertise them
in case someone asks. For this goal I have opened up a trello list which
I am currently maintain alone. https://trello.com/b/KxedeWKD

Your bug has already been added to the trello board. And I plan to
search for more html4 Issues. Add them, and do some advertisement. Maybe
someone takes the interest up.

Also I try to track what we are working on, by moving the cards, based
on the discussions made on dev. I do not track names thought. So far the
interest in the trello board is rather marginal.

It is more up to you then to the Project if you can be a part of 
OpenOffice. We are organized by the merocratic principle. If you develop 
the project you are part of it.


If you need access in order to participate, like wiki access, it will be 
granted. Commit rights are granted when we have some trust, that you 
mean it. So it is vital to


show interest  and participate on development mailing list. Best is 
subscribing to it.



In order to develop OpenOffice you need the understanding of our build 
system. Which is not an easy thing. We recommend usually to learn how to 
build OpenOffice.


Currently OpenOffice is difficult to build on Windows because the SDK 
you need is not available anymore. But I think someone on development 
mailing list can


provide you with the same if you want to try to build OpenOffice on Windows.

Someone with WIX knowledge is awesome, since I would like to see a new 
Windows installer build on WIX technology. We currently use an msi file 
wrapped in an exe installer. That is not very nice.

I'm a student of Bs-Software Engineering in Pakistan. I've finished 2
semesters and covered  Introduction to Computing, Introduction to
Programming, OOP, and Data Structures. Algorithms may come in this coming
semester.

I have developed a good understanding of C++ now.

In addition, I'm already working in the field of DevOps (Configuration
Management). However, currently working with Windows based technologies.
I'm good with Winodws Installer technology with WIX and Install shield and
have well understanding of deployments methods.

I also wrote Wix Burn based custom bootstrapper application for my company
in .Net (C#) while applying WPF's MVVM pattern by studying it myself.

Presently working with Team Foundation Server, while managing builds and
developing scripts to automate and enhance certain tasks like injecting
versions in code before compile, signing at the end and then build the
installers, merge modules etc.

I'm very much interested to work on other Build technologies, like Puppet,
Chef etc,.

Please let me know if I can start now to be part of Open Office
applications.

OpenOffice is a bit hard to get into. If you bring some determination 
towards the project, we will have fun together.


We do recommend to try to build OpenOffice from source as a first start 
for everyone who wants to code. You will need it and our build process 
is still 20 years old.


We are working on modernization of course, but it is hard work, and 
progress is slow.

The first time I learned that you were on the List was with your request

I assume that you assumed that when you subscribe someone gets notified

Since this expectation is not full filled, because there is no general

Ok. Fine. We are doing this in our freetime. No one here receives money for 
their work here atm. So please chill a bit and give us time, too.
For votes we use a response time of 72h. Maybe that is a good time to start 
with too. :)

For starters you need a wiki account.
That you request on the dev mailing (d...@openoffice.apache.org) list. You do 
not need to subscribe to the list. 
Just write that you want to work on the wiki and write a user name you want to 
have.

The next step would be to do something. But I have sadly no overview where you 
can start.

For information we have a document mailing list, but I do not know how active 
people become when you write there. Still write an introduction there and to 
the dev mailing list. The dev list is our main communication site. With 300 
mails per month quite frequent.
The document list has much lower frequency.
So I would recommend to subscribe to both list.

How can we help you to get started?
We do not have any particular structure to support volunteers. If you do 
something that improves the Project great, if not it is also fine.
I recommend you try to build OpenOffice from code first, but of course you are 
free to start / do what you want.

Hi Mitchell,

There is no issue with the technology.
We are all volunteers and an answer takes time. So we require patience.

You are right to ask. The structure of the project is a bit difficult since we 
do not employ hierarchy or a strict organisation. 
If you see something that you want to change make a suggestion.
In case you need access ask for it here or on developer mailing list (you do 
not need to subscribe if you do not want to take part.)
Just mention it since it helps us little to take care.
In Cases of no answers just *bumb* or rewrite. Sometimes mails get not 
registered.

About a job support I think Open Office contribution works after some time. Of 
course you can show off here what you can do. In general volunteers are 
appreciated.


If you need more info or if you have questions then please do not hesitate to

to explain how we do work and  trying to help among others to get every 
one who is interested into the project.


We have a tradition of self driven interest. We help you when you get 
stuck, but the desicion of what you and how much you want to do is up to 
you. :)


The biggest challenge we have is code development. And we always 
appreciate everyone who want to try. If you want to do the contribution 
in this area we do offer a first entry challenge: Building OpenOffice at 
your home. (Guide: [1]) If you get stuck, the most valueable advise is 
to ask on the lists.


The most important list for developers is the dev mailing [2] list, but 
you are welcome to ask on this list, too. Kepp in mind to mention if you 
are not subscribed. Sometimes we miss this. Also if you have other 
questions, or do not understand something ask them openly in the most 
direct form.


After a successfull build I suggest we talk what you can do next. I have 
a list on wiki with fun topics, plus we have some other fun stuff in 
reserve that focus on code enhancing. You pick then the next challenge 
to take. Step by step. I hope that sounds fine to you.


We do use SVN for versioning, but we offer a github repo, where you can 
pull from, but not push to.

with society at large, 5 years of development were scrapped. Learning from that 
lesson, I now use Git and am in the process of setting up a file server for 
home use while scrambling to recover -RECREATE- those lessons.  Other previous 
projects include a Management Reporting Suite that imported flat file data for 
easier consumption in MS-Excel via VBA, a real time touchscreen data 
acquisition project for manufacturing, and a point and click MS-Access GUI in 
VB6, among others. More recent endeavors include the PHP/MySQL stack, the MEAN 
stack, p5.js data visualizations, The classic GoF Design Patterns, Neural Net 
exploration, and Game Development in Unity.

   Having a family, while amazing, does make my efforts at coding less 
concentrated than desired, however, approaching the big Four-Oh I find a need 
to dig in again and make a contribution. I am unsure where my skills will come 
in the most beneficial to the Apache OpenOffice project, but do have a sense of 
excitement to be joining a community working on a piece of software that I have 
come to adore.

Welcome Andy,

Great that you show interest in developing Open Office.

Sadly the access to development is not that easy, or quick. You will 
need some endurance to get involved.
As a first step I recommend to get familiar with the build system of 
OpenOffice.  Our build system is a bit complex and does need some love 
and hugs ;)
We have 2 guides. [1] is a general guide, while [2] describes step by 
step which help to get familiar with it.
If you run into compiler Issues, search for the compiler Error to 
recieve help. At the end there is a message which is not helpfull to 
resolve the build issue.
Trunk is currently recieving changes to support Windows 64 builds. So 
there may breaks depending on the OS yu plan to use.
You could try to build the last live version 4.1.5 which resides in an 
own SVN branch.


I also recomment to subscribe to our development mailing list.

Which OS do you plan to develop for?

Do not hesitate to ask any Questions or for help if you need some. We 
are traditionally very freedom oriented. So you are in lead to define 
how you participate.

We are like 6 Developers. If you subscribe to Dev and say what you are
working on it I think it is fine.
However Once you have an User Account you can assign Issues to you,
signaling that you are working on them. Best is to leave the issues
Mailing list in CC, so QA and other devs can follow.

Once you have a patch you upload it to bugzilla. If you determind
enough to gain commiter status you can directly submit to our SVN
repository. (Please keep in mind that we might want to discuss a switch
to git. We have to take up the discussion on @dev mailinglist. OFC your
opinion is then also to be heared so subscribe to the @dev list)
The Revision number is then postet into the bugzilla to document the
commit.

different tool to recover their valuable content.  On the current side, I am 
suspicious that the latest Word like formats supported are getting stale with 
the Office fans out there.  Hopefully these are not beyond our reach.   I don't 
personally care about spreadsheet file formats at this time as I only use them 
for my own experiments nor for presentation formats usually although I may care 
for those soon.   I do care about some recent new spreadsheet misbehaviors with 
moderately sized data sets I have been seeing which I don't like... mostly 
regarding auto filters that cause weird results that are difficult to undo.  
This problem interferes with my efforts to develop the information I need for a 
special new kindle book on SQL. Do we have a comprehensive list of the latest 
formats, bugs, and important features that should be supported but may not be?


Note I am willing to use github for public projects and I am using Atlassian 
Bitbucket for my private projects as I can have 4 coworkers in it for free in 
that we can use to get started saving the world from data overload.

Can you describe a little what your experience is?
Have you done Application testing before?
How much experiences do you have with open office?
Have you looked a little around the tools we use? Do you know them or is it all 
new to you?
What do you expect how this will be for you?
