Updated running a discussion list with TB

2000-08-05 Thread Leif Gregory

Hello users,

Ok, I've updated the How-To on running a discussion list with TB to
include all the great new capabilities since the last release.

I'd appreciate any comments from people on if something is incorrect.

HTML to text

2000-08-05 Thread Remi Pach

Hello ,

There is no way to compose formatted messages in TheBat! and this is
what I like best about the program as I consider HTML formatting to be
a complete nuisance.

However when I receive a formatted e-mail, it is displayed in all its
splendour. Is there a way to force TheBat! to display only plain text
and ignore all the unnecessary HTML ornaments?

Too many windows

2000-08-05 Thread Remi Pach

Hello ,

I am a Eudora user trying to look for a better alternative. TheBat! is
small and powerful. It looks like a nice e-mail program and I'm giving
it a try.

I have noticed that every time I create or open a message, TheBat!
opens a new window. I find this confusing and unnecessary. Is there a
way to do all one's work in the main window, as is the case with
Eudora and other programs?

Re: Expanding trees

2000-08-05 Thread Curtis

On Fri, 4 Aug 2000 16:54:39 -0400, Pasquale J. Festa Sr. wrote:

ML (like the "T" key in Agent)? No, there's no such key.

CTRL+} does a similar sort of thing. IOW's if you're in a thread
and there's another unread message there, CTRL+} will move you to that
 message and no other.

PJFS If your in message mode, i.e. I'm reading this message and want to
PJFS read next message in *this thread * the ctrl key plus your
PJFS directional keys for up and down will take you out of the thread
PJFS and go to a previous or next message,

The CTRL+up and down keys will not expand threads but provided the
threads are expanded they will move you up and down each message in the
 thread as they should.

PJFS I want to read an entire thread while in message mode, as it is
PJFS now I have to read your message (this one I am replying to) close
PJFS it than use either the arrow key,or high lite the next message in
PJFS thread and hit *enter* .

Hmmm. I assume that you are aware that in the view folder or message
mode as you put it, there's a message list for that window which is not
on by default. View - Message List. This message list operates
independently of the main TB!'s list and is what is being used by the
 CTRL+up and down keys.

I find it tedious that the view folders message list doesn't initially
default to reflect the main windows message list for that folder. The
user may alter this if he wishes to but the *initial* list view should
be the same as the main windows is for that folder. This is especially
pertinent for those who use the view folder window without it's message
 list enabled.

PJFS Being able to * read the next message in thread while in a message
PJFS window could / should * be a perfect addition to the message window
PJFS option.

You seem to be unaware of the view folder windows own message list.

Re[3]: strange behaviour ctrl up / down

2000-08-05 Thread Fred van Veen

Hello All,
Yesterday I wrote the following and only one of you replied.

FvV I just noticed that ctrl up and ctrl down moves to the previous or
FvV next message based upon the date and time the message was received.
FvV Isn't this strange? I have sorted my messages on creation time.

Am I the only one who finds this strange behaviour?

FvV Further, when sorted last created message first, ctrl up goes down
FvV (the previous message) and ctrl down goes up (the next message).
FvV Isn't this strange too? Should ctrl up and ctrl down not look how
FvV the list folder is sorted?
FvV It could be that I'm wrong.

FvV No, I'm not. When I'm in the message, Ctrl up goes down to the
FvV message below the message Ctrl down goes up to the message above the
FvV message!

Is this a bug and is this already known?
Do I have to inform RITLABS?

with all applications. :-)

Many like myself find it a Godsend and love TB! for this. It offers me
the flexibility of using TB! across virtual desktops. TB! is non-MDI
while Eudora is MDI. I never did find an MDI interface for e-mail
management to be good but only restrictive and I disliked Eudora and
Pegasus Mail for this. It's interesting that when you're accustomed to
something how another style can be cumbersome. TB! is a different
universe and adapts different styles and approaches from the other
mainstream apps. This is a good thing. It creates choice.

Should the developers add the ability of toggling from an MDI type to a
non-MDI type interface? IMO, it would add unnecessary bloat. Most apps
adopt one interface. TB! has chosen a more flexible non-MDI.

RP Is there a way to do all one's work in the main window, as is the
RP case with Eudora and other programs?

No. The editor window cannot be integrated into the main window.

To display automatically the plain text when you view a message: under
the Options menu, uncheck "HTML Auto-view." You can still view the
HTML by using the "message.html" tab at the bottom of the message.

My personal opinion is that it's way too often used inappropriately but
that there's a place for it. It was introduced in a very bad way to
users and this is the basis behind the abuse. How can they have it on by
default in OE for example. How can they have fixed settings to compose
in HTML format in the first place?!! I do send HTML messages at times
but it's rare and only when I really need the HTML abilities.

Go to the Options menu and toggle off 'HTML autoview'. This will
display the message in plane text initially by default. If you look at
the bottom of the message view window of an HTML formatted message,
you'll see two tabs. Clicking on one displays the plain text version
while the other displays the HTML formatted version.

Send function in IE 5.0

2000-08-05 Thread Craig S. Reeder

Hello TBUDL,

I'm brand new to the Bat!, I've read the FAQ and archives and I can't
seem to come up with an answer to an odd behavior from IE 5.0 when
trying to "Send" - "Page by e-mail" or "Link by e-mail". I can click
on either choice when trying to send a page or the link via e-mail
and I'm left with no action on behalf of "the Bat!" (the Bat! being
the default mailer). When either Eudora Pro or Outlook Express 5 is
the default mailer then the page or link is sent via the default
mailer. I noticed in the archives or FAQ that there is a change made
to Netscape when using it as the browser. I use IE 5.0. Am I missing
something and didn't see it in the archives? I've upgraded through
the betas thinking that they might "fix" my problem. Any help is

the default mailer then the page or link is sent via the default
mailer. I noticed in the archives or FAQ that there is a change made
to Netscape when using it as the browser. I use IE 5.0. Am I missing
something and didn't see it in the archives? I've upgraded through
the betas thinking that they might "fix" my problem. Any help is
   appreciated.

Hi Craig

You are not doing anything incorrectly, the functions in IE5 use MAPI
which is not implemented in The Bat!

Instead you could save the page and use right click Send To The BAT! from
Windows Explorer or simply copy the URL into your mail.

Stupid Question #349

2000-08-05 Thread Joe Finocchiaro

I discovered how to prohibit TB's splash screen from appearing (while
opening) by using the command line, but is there a way to do it
on a permanent basis?

With Eudora, you could change the .ini file; is there a similar
file/method for TB?

I have a lot of programs that open automatically, including TB, and
I like to keep the screen unlittered. It's already busy enough.

Thanks!

I took this from the "Tip of the Day" that comes up when you start TB. Just affix
the parameter "/nologo" (no parenthesis) to the end of the executable
"thebat.exe" in your icon's properties on your desktop. That's how
mine starts up.

Thanks for the tip, Craig! I learned something else, too.

You have to make this change to *all* of The Bat's shortcuts, at least
to the ones you routinely use.

I was going by the shortcut I had placed in my "Quick Launch" file,
and I hadn't yet made the change to that particular start-up file.

Thanks again!

Yes, you can. Create a new filter rule, specify the source and
destination folders, and then enter the filter string for one of the
persons under 'filtering strings'. Now, enter the other search strings
in the 'Alternatives' section of the filter rule setup dialog, hitting
the 'Add Set' button and entering a string for each of the other persons
mail to be filtered. TB! will then filter any mail that matches any one
of the strings that you've entered.

This is different from adding all the strings in the first window of the
filter rule dialog, under 'filtering strings', using the 'Add' button.
If you add all the strings there, you're asking TB! to filter messages
only if *all* the strings are matched in *each* message to be filtered.

Hello Windisch and everyone else...

WG I think it is possible, Account/Filters/Incoming filter/Alternatives. (I've
WG never tried this so far, but I think that's what you need.)

As an alternative to Alternatives (*g*) you can use the pipe ( | )
character as "OR".

I.E. to filter for "john" or "jan", you can use one filter rule for:
john|jan

Backing up in order to reformat

2000-08-05 Thread Tai

Hello Group,

I'm planning to reformat my hard drive and was wondering how I should
go about backing up the all the file folder structure and emails. I
currently manage 3 POP email accounts using TheBat!. I hope there's a
smarter way than doing it the way I did it the last time, which was to
recreate all the accounts and file structures and import the backuped
emails that I exported prior to reformatting.

You bet there is. Back up up you MAIL folder (by default, this is
C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL). After reinstaling, copy it back to
it's place. Then start TB!, and create account with the same name as
before. Now select the account and hit Alt+Ctrl+Shift+L to recreate

Or another way is to back up the mail folder as well as TB!'s

reformatting and reinstalling windows, restore TB!'s directory to the
same directory and path it was originally and restore the registry key.
It would be as if nothing had been done to TB!. :-)
