Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Large fonts

2014-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Tink when you try to solve the initial problem by doing clear direct
formatting you are clearing the 400 and forcing it back to the
style's size! So it might be better to set a style, or create a new
style and set that to have font size 400 (or whatever).

As for the initial problem i don't suffer from that on LO 3.5.7 on
Ubuntu. I thought that the Mac version was the same as the GnuLinux
(Ubuntu, Mint, Redhat, openSuSE, Mageia etc) one but it would make
sense if it's the BSD one instead. Even so i thought the BSD one was
almost identical to the GnuLinux one. I think it's only the Windows
one that is much different. Sadly i can't try out more recent
versions of LO on this machine easily. At work i was on a much more
recent version but i didn't try to click back into the document after
setting the size to 400. Grrr, sorry about that!

It's interesting to hear that other people don't seem to be having a
problem with a directly typed-in value for font size but i'm wondering
if they clicked into the document again afterwards. I'm wondering if
your or my machine has a wonky UserProfile or if it's something else.

So is it possible to re-use an existing style or create a new called
HugeFont or something and then set that font to 400? Does that do
the trick?
Regards from
Tom :)

I am not sure if there is an easy way to convert numbers to words. ie
 2,000 to Two thousand

So far people have been talking about how to make the numbers look
like numbers still but just be unable to perform calculations using
them. It's good for telephone numbers, zip-codes and that sort of
 thing.

There might be an Extension (what other people call Add-ons or
Plug-ins) to do that in LibreOffice itself or there might be a
separate app (or program) that can do this outside of LibreOffice.
 Our Extensions page is here;
 http://www.libreoffice.org/features/extensions/
Most are written by 3rd parties but some are very popular. There are
also Extensions written for OpenOffice which might still work with LO
or it might be easy to contact their devs to ask them if they could
 update it for LO.

 Sorry this isn't very helpful!

It shouldn't need be necessary to click back into the doc(1). Here, I
typed 400 in the font size box, then hit return. *Nothing* visibly
changed in the document. Note, by nothing I mean just that; not even
the cursor changed size. Then I typed a character, and lo-and-behold,
it was in 400 point, as was the cursor.

(1) In fact it's only when I clicked back in to the doc that I got the

Yes, I saved and re-opened the file without issue.

My font size does not readjust after i clcik back in so i can't test

That depends. If the OP is setting point size w/o any text selection

settings are, seemingly, lost. Why? Because I find it's very hard to

Hi Tink,

To set the font size:

* put the cursor in your document exactly where you wish your font to change
* change the font size number in the font box by double-clicking on
the number and changing it to your liking

* hit Return
* start typing --- you will now notice that the font is now in the size
you chose

To change the font size of text that has already been typed in

* highlight the words or sentences that you would like to change the
font size
* change the font size number in the font box by double-clicking on
the number and changing it to your liking

* hit Return
* you will now notice that the text is now in your chosen font size

That's it!

Cheers,

Marc

[libreoffice-users] LibréOffice Base Forms, PostgreSQL (JDBC) and Table Joins

2014-02-22 Thread Jim Seymour
Hi There,

I've researched and experimented with this, and I'm out of ideas.

For starters: LibréOffice 3.5.7.2, Build ID: 350m1 (Build: 2)

Before anybody suggests a newer version: I'm currently on Ubuntu
10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), so I'm stuck with it. (Even my much newer
Linux Mint desktop install at work is still 3.x, I believe.)

I have a database with a couple tables, as in

create table hdwr_assets (
  atag text primary key,
  serno text unique,
  status_id int references hdwr_status,
  .
  .
  .
);

-- e.g.: deployed, in stock
create table hdwr_status (
  status_id serial primary key,
  descr textnot null,
);

The plan was to create a form that could query and alter hardware
assets, selecting values for status_id from a drop-down list, the
available selection being from the hardware status table.

Near as I can tell: The Forms Wizard simply isn't that smart?

Interestingly: A Query created in Design View DTRT, wrt FK
references, but I can't persuade the Forms Wizard to do so. In fact:
FK references in the Forms Wizard appear to be thoroughly broken--at
least in the version of LO I have?

Is there any way to accomplish what I want, or am I going to have to
resort to Real Coding (Java, HTML+PHP+JS or whatever)?

Thanks,
Jim

It is called bottom or in-line posting, and is preferred by the more
technically inclined.

It is primarily Outlook users who prefer blind top-posting (ie, quoting
the entire message they are replying to and adding their comment at the
top).

Most people who are rabidly anti bottom/inline posting will go out of
their way to complain about how bad bottom posting is, and will
invariably use BLIND bottom posting - quoting the ENTIRE message ABOVE
your comment, which is admittedly way WORSE than blind top-posting - as
examples of why bottom/inline posting is bad. They almost always simply
refuse to even acknowledge the difference between BLIND bottom posting,
and inline posting (quoting only the relevant portion, and putting your
responses/comments AFTER the relevant quoted text, which is much cleaner
and easier to read than even top-posting, mainly because you can clearly
see the full context).

[libreoffice-users] Forms in Spreadsheets

2014-02-22 Thread Pikov Andropov
I have a spreadsheet which has two sheets -- Checkout and PaddleNumbers.

Checkout has the following columns
A: Code
B: Item
C: Opening Bid
D: Paddle Num
E: Buyer Name (contains =VLOOKUP(D2,$PaddleNumbers.A$2:B$110,2,0)
suitable incremented)
F: Amount

while PaddleNumbers has
A: Paddle NUM
B: Name

I would like to add a form so that a person can enter a Code, a Paddle
Number and an Amount, and have those fields (including Buyer Name)
populated.

The tutorials I've found have been for Excel and an older OO Calc, and I
have not been able to figure it would. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, how do I protect the spreadsheet so that nothing can be changed
except from the form?

If anyone would like me to email a sample off-list, I'd be more than
happy to do that.

Thanks.

Tom, I agree that Midori (0.5.7) can be difficult to configure ; for
example, I've never managed to get it to display Gmail in the standard view,
but am forced to read it in the basic HTML view. Nevertheless, I was able to
download the deb.tar.gz file for the main installer package as easily in
Midori as in my standard browser, i e, Firefox Nightly 30.0a1

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Large fonts

2014-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Good point! So you can keep the 400-point font size as long as you
don't click back in. That means you can probably print it and do
various things but it is limiting. For example if you save it then
open again doe the saved version retain the 400 point?

My font size does not readjust after i clcik back in so i can't test
the parameters of this but it seems like a bug to me.

Henri,

You are correct. The US uses the decimal point or period and I know some
European countries use the comma instead.

There is setting under TOOLSOPTIONSLANGUAGE SETTINGSLANGUAGE to set
the default separator based on the system location (US, France, etc.). I
think the default is to use the local setting but it can be reset.

 E: Buyer Name (contains =VLOOKUP(D2,$PaddleNumbers.A$2:B$110,2,0)

I would like to add a form so that a person can enter a Code, a Paddle

 populated.

The tutorials I've found have been for Excel and an older OO Calc, and I

Also, how do I protect the spreadsheet so that nothing can be changed

[libreoffice-users] Defending ODF against OOXML in the UK

2014-02-22 Thread Alexander Wilms

Hi everyone,

I already posted this on the LibreOffice Google+ and Facebook pages, but
there are probably quite a few people subscibed to this list who are not
following either one.

The UK government plans to move to open standards like ODF and HTML and
apparently Microsoft didn't know that people can voice their opinions on
the proposal since January and started to spread some FUD once again a
few days ago.

If you think that truly open standards are a better solution than OOXML,
then it'd be beneficial if you registered on the standards.data.gov.uk

This has always worked before from Chrome directly through the link.

(I accidentally clicked early and also could not get the rpm version -

I also tried to download the current 4.2.0 version - same problem.

Also tried this:

Re: [libreoffice-users] HOW CAN I CONVERT A NUMBER IN LibreOffice CALC TO TEXT IN LibreOffice CALC?

2014-02-22 Thread Peter West
Here we go again.

There is top-posting, which is, in general, a good thing, and is preferred by
most email users, including the technically inclined, like myself. Its primary
advantage is that it is a great courtesy to the readers of email threads, who
can quickly assess a contribution to the thread for relevance to them. A
secondary advantage for the poster is that it increases the likelihood that the
new material will actually be read, or at least skimmed.

There is in-line posting, which is necessary when you need to reply to specific
points in a previous post. You can put your comments into the immediate context
to which they apply. This is also a good thing, if the circumstances require it.

Then there is bottom-posting. It's a kind of virus that contaminates,
primarily, open-source mailing lists. When a poster is infected he (yes,
overwhelmingly, he) is overcome with the urge to tell people what to do. He is
filled with a (completely spurious) sense of righteousness. He is a rebel, he
is liberated, he carries the banner of freedom (free as in speech) against the
grinding capitalist forces of oppression and regimentation. Therefore, you MUST
DO AS YOU ARE TOLD. And so the champions of freedom become tuppenny Trotskys,
low-rent Lenins, and we can say a quiet prayer of thanks that their influence
extends no farther than the occasional mailing-list.

How do I know? I've been there. I am now afflicted by a complementary virus. I
am equally righteous and insufferable. I know, I know. But my desire is to see
all of this nonsense fade away into an easy-going environment of live and let
live. Bakunin before Lenin, and classical small-l liberalism before either.

Bottom and Top posting seems to be a personal preference often pursued
with religious zeal (as you mention below). While quickly browsing, top
posting is easier to follow unless your email client hides all previous
posts for you. I installed an extension to do this in Thunderbird;
without it, bottom posting is almost impossible to follow. The extension
makes it easy to follow ongoing conversations regardless, but is
annoying if you were not following things from the start and want to
catch-up :-(

in-line posting seems to be assumed for Thunderbird. Makes the response
more like a conversation.

It is primarily Outlook users who prefer blind top-posting (ie,

You must work hard to get Outlook to do anything else. I know you used
to be able to convince Outlook to do otherwise. I don't even know if you
can still do that. Every time MS releases a new version of something
these days, it usually feels like I need to relearn the product. It
annoys me.

My limited exposure says that every large company using Outlook likely
works in this way.

putting your responses/comments AFTER the relevant quoted text, which
is much cleaner and easier to read than even top-posting, mainly
because you can clearly see the full context).

You can make everyone angry and happy by doing both. Place your entire
message at both the top and the bottom :-)

This is the site I'm downloading from:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/
No issues there for me.

After five minutes it timed out and is trying again.

I've tried Chrome, Seamonkey and Firefox. In Chrome, after about two
minutes of waiting for the download to start, I get a web page saying
that the site is unavailable.

In Seamonkey and Firefox, it says Waiting for
download.documentfoundation.org... and nothing ever comes through.

I always do the help download first - it's smaller and gives me a
faster success - when it works. Again, this is for the English Deb
x86_64 version.

I tried this:

$  wget
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/4.2.1/deb/x86_64/LibreOffice_4.2.1_Linux_x86-64_deb_helppack_en-US.tar.gz

HTTP request sent, awaiting response...

And that's as far as it gets.

I can ping the site, but no download luck.

This has always worked before from Chrome directly through the link.

(I accidentally clicked early and also could not get the rpm version -
same problem.)

I also tried to download the current 4.2.0 version - same problem.

Also tried this:

$ scp
download.documentfoundation.org:/libreoffice/stable/4.2.1/deb/x86_64/LibreOffice_4.2.1_Linux_x86-64_deb_helppack_en-US.tar.gz

At least I get something back here, but no download

Last ditch: I tried clicking on the main download link, and I get the
donation page just fine, but still no download.

Any suggestion not tried above would be most welcome

I'll have to get back to you on that when I get home tonight. Our

External Host: mirrors.syringanetworks.net

I have redacted our company identifiers. It could also be a problem
with the mirror's security - we're kind of tight on that.

This used to work - I routinely download the updates at work, but
yesterday this happened here and last night I could not connect from
home, either.

Thanks.

Hi :)
Sorry! I missed all that. It seems to be working now.

My web-browser tries to block such downloads but i just click on the
Allow button in the grey 'tool'-bar that appears at such times and
then the pop-up appears asking if i want to save or open it. So, it's
working now afaik.

I'm not certain but hasn't the downloadsdonations page been
re-organised? It seems really clear now that donations are optional.
All the download bit is in the top section of the page and then a
clear line dividing the page into 2. The lower part deals with
optional donations. I'm sure it wasn't as clear as this before but
maybe it was?

Regards from
Tom :)

The HTTP access from that mirror appears to be broken, but the FTP
access works. Try:
ftp://mirrors.syringanetworks.net/tdf/libreoffice/stable/4.2.1/deb/x86_64/LibreOffice_4.2.1_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
.

I trust this helps.

Guess I should have been clear.

Henri? What OS are you running?

 Thx guys...

Sorry, Charles ; I, too, should have been explicit : I tested on 64-bit
Linux Mint 16. Recently I've noted several issue reported by Windows users
which I have not been able to reproduce on GNU/Linux
; as I presume a majority of LO users are running Windows machines (Does
anyone know if this presumption is correct ? We should be able to get an
idea from the downloads statistics.), it's important that LO works well
with Windows OSes
