When I boot up my Voyage MPD system and play some music, I sometimes get an audible click or noise pulse at about 1 pulse per second, along with the proper audio play back, for the duration of the sound file. The noise is not present when there is no music file playing. Rebooting the mpd server generally results in the clicking noise vanishing until I finish listening and power the server down. Occasionally I may have to reboot a couple of times before I get a clean output. Sometimes the system comes up clean on first boot. So far I have tried both Voyage MPD 0.7.5 and 0.8.0 I have tried two different systems, a FIC system and a Futro A250 thin client, both Lx-800 based. I choose 386 generic mode when I build the systems on the CF cards. I have tried two different DAC's. No matter which sets of hardware, or software, it either works beautifully after boot, or it plays the audio with a constant click, click, click, which is very annoying. I am streaming the audio file as a Flac at 24bit/96khz from my Freenas Nas box, using a Wifi connection, and a wifi Nokia N800 as a controller for the mpd server. Whilst the fault is occurring on my MPD server, I have also simultaneously streamed the same audio filefrom the Freenas box to a VLC player on my Linux desktop system. This plays the file with NO clicks, showing the problem is somewhere in the MPD servers ??? Googling around, I cannot find any obvious postings from anyone with similar problems so it must be unique to my installation, but I am unable to work out what is causing this. The fact that rebooting fixes the problem for the duration of the session blows my mind. Thanks for the info. I'm considering donating a kit to the Voyage Linux project. You and other vendors are welcome to make donations to Voyage Linux project. We can discuss this on separate thread for the arrangement. But before that I'd like to know more about the project and what it can do. I have some Linux experience myself, but wish there was a good solution for the linux-inexperienced to get started. Voyage MPD mainly contains a music server daemon (MPD), which is responsible for music playback and sending audio signals to USB DAC or built-in/PCI sound card. The music files could be stored in USB disk devices, or accessed remotely via NFS/Samba mounts. You also need a separate device (iPad/iPhone/Android/PC/Mac) to remotely control the playback. The ideal audio Linux distribution would start and install with minimal user interaction. Voyage Store is now selling a Voyage MPD Starter Kit. Just plug in your USB DAC and load your HD music files to USB disk, you can enjoy the playback. BTW, you need iPad/iPhone/Android/PC/Mac to remotely control the playback and manage the playlist. As for the audio setup, playback should be without oversampling and interference with the data. Agree. To minimize EMI, Voyage MPD should be best run on a fanless and headless hardware with minimal electronics, like PCEngines' ALIX3D2. -- Regards, Kim-man Punky Tse * Open Source Embedded Solutions and Systems - Voyage Linux (http://linux.voyage.hk) - Voyage ONE (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-one) - Voyage MPD (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-mpd) * Voyage Store (http://store.voyage.hk) ___ Voyage-linux mailing list Voyage-linux@list.voyage.hk http://list.voyage.hk/mailman/listinfo/voyage-linux

Re: [Voyage-linux] Bug reports
Hi Stanislav, Regarding to the 1st problem: Floating point exception in vmstat 1 when idle. I am able to reproduce it yesterday. But after I reboot with different kernels back and forth, today this problem disappears automagically! I have debugged a bit and can share the finding It seems that on ALIX with 3.2 kernel, the idle counter in /proc/stat (the 4th number) is not moving at 100 ticks when idle. I once saw the idle counter stay as the same number when it is idle. If the idle counter does not change over an interval, vmstat would use 0 for a divisor. So the floating point exception is actually division-by-zero error. The below output shows the correct behaviour while [ 1 ] ; do cat /proc/stat |grep cpu ; sleep 1 ; done cpu 1031 0 1916 1115462 258 13 73 0 0 0 cpu 1032 0 1917 1115560 258 13 73 0 0 0 cpu 1032 0 1919 1115658 258 13 73 0 0 0 cpu 1033 0 1920 1115756 258 13 73 0 0 0 Next, I will do a hard reset on ALIX board to see if I can repeat the problem. Re: [Voyage-linux] Problem mounting USB HDD
Hi Derek, For NTFS you can't mount rw or it is unsupported. Linux guy just don't have the spec. on NTFS so write is dangerous. Probably it is permission problem of your files on the disk, not MPD. So better change the file permission on windows machines and plug back again, or re-format your disk to FAT32. Have tried changing permissions - says Operation not supported - so I went into the USB HDD via Windows again and allowed everyone all operations - still no joy. One odd thing - when I ran chmod -R 777 it scrolled through every song on the USB drive but when is ls /var/lib/mpd/music/music it seems to list only the directories - could this have a bearing on why it won't update? Will DSD be a trend in CAS in near future? 2. What hardware is needed to play DSD stream? 3. There seems to be two ways in DSD playback. a) Having MPD to translate DSD to PCM; b) DSD native which requires a DAC to support DSD. Re: [Voyage-linux] Issue with volume at boot up
Hi Jeff, Alsa stores the sound device information under /var/lib/alsa/asound.state before reboot. You can run alsactl store 0 to save the sound information for card0. After restart it will run alsactl restore 0 to restore the saved states. Regards, Punky On 7/20/2012 11:10 AM, Jeff Mai wrote: Hi, Long time user of the Alix 2d2 plus Voyage. NOT a linux expert, however. It seems like I have to relearn everything each time I update Voyage. I'm having a new and odd issue. During boot up of the Alix, the volume level indicated on the display of my USB attached sound device (Audiophilleo1) changes several times (the sequence is: -14db, -72db, -20db, -14db, -20db) and is not restored to the previous setting prior to boot up. Formerly, this was not happening - the display was constant (or at most changed only once) and remained where it was set prior to boot up. The only thing that has changed is the firmware on the Audiophilleo and an upgrade to the PurePower supply for the Audiophilleo. It is my understanding that the volume level is set by ALSA - the Audiophilleo only reports the level and should not influence it. So the questions are: How do I understand what is happening to the volume at boot up of Voyage? How could the Audiophilleo firmware and hardware changes affect the volume setting during boot up if this is controlled by ALSA? Any thoughts / suggestions on this are much appreciated. [Voyage-linux] New Donation from exD Audio
We are pleased to announced that exD Audio [1] has donated a USB-DSD development unit to Voyage Linux community. Their donation enables us to certify DSD support on Voyage MPD. After a brief test, Voyage MPD 0.9-rc1 and daily build play DSDIFF/DSF and PCM files flawlessly on this USB-DSD unit. You can find more information about exD Audio and their products in the below link [1]. Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to exD Audio for their generous donation. Re: [Voyage-linux] Fwd: Voyage current fails to boot PXE
Hi all, Voyage Pxeboot is fixed on daily, there were some problems: 1. stop at switching... problem is because of all_generic_ide in kernel parameter. Remove it in the fix. 2. serial console is not set probably for login and autoinstall feature does not work because modifying inittab in initramfs at boot was broken. Hint: press '0' in pxeboot menu will give you more debug information. Let me know if it works for you. On 12/12/2012 11:11 AM, Kim-man 'Punky' TSE wrote: Some updates. One of the users communicated to me recently and I have patched the 3.8.5 kernel available below: http://www.voyage.hk/dists/experimental/linux/linux-image-3.8.5-voyage_12.4-1_i386.deb This should solve your problem according to the user reported. Re: [Voyage-linux] kernel headers
Hi Michael, The header will only be provided during the release time, when a voyage kernel is frozen. In addition, I don't think out-of-kernel modules is a good idea. Modules should be put into vanilla kernel. Regards, Punky On 4/21/2013 9:36 PM, Michael Hartje wrote: Dear list-readers, if you must compile external modules - e.g. r8168 for network - you need the kernel_headers. Ok, you can produce them compiling the kernel and everything else. This is a stony way if you do not find the mails on this list decribing how to do it... I like to ask what is the reason not to generate the kernel headers by default with release or the nightly build? if not produced by officials -- what is the reason not to make a short shell script as voyage specific with the aim to produce it by the individual who need it. Re: [Voyage-linux] mpd.conf and DSD files
Hi Jim, All of the .dff samples files downloaded from 2l.no have the same problem. I need to used Korg AudioGate to convert the file to .dsf to resolve. Its obvious when this is happening. Any of the following will be true. If you have an Alix or an Atom processor and sinc_best is selected the system will stall. If sinc_fastest, it will be noisy (and the Alix will still stall) if you have an i5/i7 at better than 2 GHz the processor use will spike near max. It works but is not really the first choice I think. -Demian ___ Voyage-linux mailing list Voyage-linux@list.voyage.hk http://list.voyage.hk/mailman/listinfo/voyage-linux -- Regards, Kim-man Punky Tse * Open Source Embedded Solutions and Systems - Voyage Linux (http://linux.voyage.hk) - Voyage ONE (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-one) - Voyage MPD (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-mpd) * Voyage Store (http://store.voyage.hk) ___ Voyage-linux mailing list Voyage-linux@list.voyage.hk http://list.voyage.hk/mailman/listinfo/voyage-linux

Well, I understand that the headers are provided with the release -- but what about the release candidates? the last voyage release seems to be 0.8. If you select voayage to install it on a new flash card system, you are looking for long duration fo future operation even in this frozen state. So I decided to prepare the system with 0.9rc2. But with 0.9rc2 I selected the kernel version 3.6.9 as of end of 2012 -- is this too new? Although I don't understand why insisting on the kernel-headers as it could be re-generated by kernel source, but here it is: http://www.voyage.hk/dists/experimental/linux/linux-headers-3.6.9-voyage_12.2-1_i386.deb out-of-kernel modules are sometimes a must when you have the Realtek network chipset rtl 8168 since the kernel module r8169 has some problems with this chipset. The module r8169 is loaded but the network does not funtion with it. Some people recommend to use the manufacturers provided driver for it -- and this seems to do the job. What is your idea how to solve this situation? I would contact the manufacture or the related developer to fix the vanilla kernel ASAP. Doing so it would benefit the whole Linux community in a cost-effective way. -- Regards, Kim-man Punky Tse * Open Source Embedded Solutions and Systems - Voyage Linux (http://linux.voyage.hk) - Voyage ONE (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-one) - Voyage MPD (http://linux.voyage.hk/voyage-mpd) * Voyage Store (http://store.voyage.hk) ___ Voyage-linux mailing list Voyage-linux@list.voyage.hk http://list.voyage.hk/mailman/listinfo/voyage-linux
