[XFree86] The GUIness of it all
Ok, so I finally got X compiled (stupid ldconfig) but now I have another problem. I'm trying to install xFCE for a desktop manager, so I'm also trying to compile the GTK (dependency). I've installed all of the _GTK's_ dependencies, but every time I try to run ./configure, it crashes with the message configure: error: Pango 1.2.0 and Xft backend is required for x11 target I know that Pango is installed (I can see it in /usr/local/lib, and I HAVE run ldconfig this time!!!) so the problem must be Xft. What I've read says something about needing Xft2, but that may not even make any real sense. Do I need to recompile XFree86 with some sort of option (to enable Xft) or what? [XFree86] LCD monitor: X works in Mandrake, but not in Redhat
Hola! I have an NEC Multisync LCD1765. I have not been able to get this monitor to work with RH9. I tried Mandrake 9.0 and the monitor worked without problems. I tried Mandy for awhile, but I really want to go back to Redhat if possible. I have tried to merge the working XF86Config files from M9 into the RH9 version without success. My attention is currently focused on the horizontal and vertical sync rates. If I enable the Redhat settings at 60Hz and 60Hz, there are no errors, but the monitor reports No signal found- going to sleep. I am currently booting to a prompt, so I can use CTRL-ALT-BKSPC to log out back to the prompt. When I return to the prompt, the screen is full of the typical messages one gets when logging out of an x server to a prompt. If I enable the Mandrake settings (by commenting out the appropriate set of values), I get the following errors: (EE) VESA(0): No matching modes (EE) Screen(s) found, no none have a usable configuration Fatal server error: no screens found. My Frankenstien XF86Config file is enclosed. I know somebody out there has the answer or a really good hunch. All commnets and suggestions appreciated. Lenard, your suggestions will be wasted on me, since I am using a Microsoft newreader until I can get Redhat working or go back to Mandrake. Thanks, all! [XFree86] MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Hello, I'm a complete linux newbie, and i installed slackware 8.1, and liked it, but had an ATI rage 128 32MB video card back then. That one went kaput, and I bought an MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4200, Now i loaded up slackware 9.0 (never tried 8.1 w/ new card), and i cant get the x window system to start. I get the same error every time, and ive gone through the xfsetup and xfconfig to no previal. My error message is on the lines the fact that it says it found a screen but could not config it. But then the output file says that access is denied when i try to open it or copy it to a floppy, and i only havethe root login,so i dont even know how to get the file to show it to you guys. But as for this problem, maybe it has already happened, and somone had the same issue and knows how i can fix it. My monitor is a ViewSonic GS790. If you need to know anything, just e-mail me back. i sure hope someone knows what i can do, because i sure dont. Thanks in advanced. Michael Anderson

Re: [XFree86] Trouble starting X on Red Hat 7.2
First off, I would greatly recommend upgrading to RH 8.0. I dont' think 7.2 had ext3 support yet. Anyway .. did you install the Nvidia driver? You can go here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191 to download it. Make sure you download it and the correct kernel RPM. The install instructions on the site are pretty easy (I think you change the driver from nv to nvidia, and comment out a few lines in the XF86Config). [XFree86] Blurry Monitor
I'm having a strange problem with my monitor. In linux (RH 8.0) it is just 'slightly' blurry. Not so blurry as to make it impossible to read, but blurry enough that if I code here for more than 20 minutes or so, my head is pounding from eye strain. If I boot up into windblows 2000 it's nice and crisp using the same resolution (1024 x 768). Any ideas how to fix this? I've tried all kinds of refresh rates to no avail. I even tried 800 x 600 (eeek), but it was blurry there as well. Here's my config: RedHat 8.0 (haven't upgraded anything until I figure this out so it's all distro defaults) GeForce 2 MX 400 (Also tried a PCI ATI Xpert 128 with same result) Shamrock C903P5 19 monitor. it HAS to be something in the monitor settings. I tried this before with RedHat 7.2 and 7.3 on a machine with an Intel 810 (I think), but ended up going back to 2000. Well I've decided that I'm NEVER using another MS product, so I have to figure this out now. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated. Re: I'm stuck: font-related crash with current CVS
On Wed, 19 Feb 2003, Keith Packard wrote: Yes, they are rather system specific, but FreeType2 uses setjmp and longjmp extensively for error recovery. Disallowing setjmp and longjmp would make using FreeType2 rather difficult. I believe the approach taken will at least work in the majority of cases, as long as setjmp/longjmp are exported as regular functions and jmp_buf is no larger than xf86jmp_buf. Because the system setjmp.h is included when referencing those functions, it may be wise to place a check there to ensure xf86jmp_buf is large enough; that would catch systems for which this technique will fail. What are the risks of pulling in other system specific stuff that shouldn't be included? It seems like the wrapped versions could be extended so that they would work correctly. Either let the jmpbuf get passed into them, or have a single global jmpbuf that is used to avoid the stack disapearing problem. [XFree86] radeon 9500 Xvideo crash w/SwCursor, 4.2.99.901
Hardware is Built-by-ATI Radeon 9500 128MB. Server is XFree86-4.2.99.901-20030213.1debug, which I built by enabling DebuggableBuild in mharris' Rawhide package. Server SEGV's when starting any application which uses Xvideo (tested mplayer and xine) AND the server is configured to use SwCursor. Xv works fine with HwCursor (I had cursor artifacts in that mode before 20030213.1, which fixes that). I tested in both dual- and single-head mode, with no change. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4144 (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 0002 Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping+ SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz+ UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- Latency: 64 (2000ns min), cache line size 10 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 11 Region 0: Memory at f000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] Region 1: I/O ports at ec00 [size=256] Region 2: Memory at ff8f (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Expansion ROM at 8000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: available only to root 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4164 Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 0003 Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping+ SERR- FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz+ UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- Latency: 64 (2000ns min), cache line size 10 Region 0: Memory at e800 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] Region 1: Memory at ff8e (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: available only to root Here is a backtrace with gdb-xfree86 attached to the process when it segfaulted. Re: [Xpert]New pointer extension?
I've been thinking that we need a new extension for better pointer motion in video games and other interactive applications. I came to that conclusion a couple years ago and now I wish that I had been more proactive back then. I'd like to see a stand-alone X-extension suitable for adoption by X.org that would do all of the following with a single request: 1) grab the pointer (and other clients don't get the events) 2) hide the cursor 3) receive relative motion instead of absolute motion 4) do whatever is possible to reduce the latency in reporting these events to the client. For what it's worth, if you compile xc/programs/Xserver/os with -DTCP_NODELAY, I've found that the issue mentioned in item 4 (latency of pointer events) is greatly reduced or eliminated. This turns off the coalesence of packets, so events are sent as soon as they happen, rather than getting bunched up and sent in bursts. See xc/lib/xtrans/Xtranssock.c to see the actual code which is turned on when TCP_NODELAY is defined. (This flag was easiest for me to turn on by adding it to ConnectionFlags in X11.tmpl, but adding it locally in the os directory works, too.) Of course, this won't address all types of transports, and it can be dependent on the underlying OS support, so defining that flag certainly isn't guaranteed to address the latency issue on all OS/transport combinations. But, I've had success with it in the past, so I thought I'd mention it. -paul ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

Keith PackardXFree86 Core TeamHP Cambridge Research Lab Hi Keith, The changes which Rick Beldin mentioned related to extension decoding in xscope don't currently have an MIT license on them, but I should be able to get that done. (I hadn't done it previously since the rest of xscope didn't have an MIT license, as you've already noted.) The changes involved adding an mini-infrastructure to decode extension requests, replies, errors, and events, so that extensions can be added easily and in a modular fashion. At the time, this did what I wanted with the least impact to the original source code. I'm sure others who have added extension tracing have made similar changes. I've added some extensions, but I didn't fully decode them all (i.e. one only prints out the names of the requests and replies, but it doesn't decode all of the information in each request/reply). I think I also threw in some code to account for improperly encoded reply lengths. There was also a potential overflow problem which I found when decoding some large replies (such as XListFontsWithInfo() with lots of fonts present and XGetImage() for really large images). I found a fix for it, but it often only defers the problem, so I'd hesitate to call it the fix. If there's interest, I can work to get this contributed under the proper license. -paul ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

I installed XFree86 4.1.0 on my RedHat 7.1, and now the startup is all messed up. I end up with only XFree running when I used to have a KDE login. If I type 'startkde' at the console I get (I think it's xterm), KDE starts, but everything has a greenish titlebar above it, and I only have a few fonts available. During the install-script, I answered 'yes' to all questions about overwriting configuration-files (as I never modified them). Am I right thinking that I lost the Red Hat specific config-files? (I backed up the X11R6 directory, but NOT the X11 one) If so, which config files have to be changed back? Should I change them to the default RedHat 7.1 ones? (RH7.1 carries XFree4.0.3) I would find this out myself, but the startup is really confusing (startx, xinit, xinitrc, xinput, xclients, ...) Oh, and maybe it also has something to do with the display-manager and/or the session-manager? I really don't know what these two programs do, but I get the xsm when I startup my computer. (I found there's also a kdm, a gdm and a xdm; also very confusing...)
