Hmmm. Just tried this. ssh -v tells me that remote rhosts authentication
was disabled due to bad perms on my home directory at the other end,
but my directory is drwxrwx--x, which is perfectly correct
(group read/write/execute due to Debian's use of user groups,
and world execute for public_html access). Is this an ssh bug?

Not as such. Ssh is perfectly reasonable in being paranoid about
permissions as it has no way of knowing that only you are in your
personal group. There is really no need for group write permission on
your directory, so you might as well chmod g-w it.

Jens. Here's a twist. I've attached a short text

10.8. Running an if for remote printers

One oddity of lpd is that the if is not run for remote printers. If
you find that you need to run an if, you can do so by setting up a
double queue and requeueing the job. As an example, consider this
  printcap:

   lj-5:remote-hplj:\
   :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
   :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5:\
   :if=/usr/lib/lpd/filter-lj-5:
   lj-5-remote:lp=/dev/null:sh:rm=printer.name.com:\
   :rp=raw:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5-raw:

in light of this filter-lj-5 script:

   #!/bin/sh
   gs options -q -dSAFER -sOutputFile=- - | \
   lpr -Plj-5-remote -U$5

The -U option to lpr only works if lpr is run as daemon, and it sets
the submitter's name for the job in the resubmitted queue correctly.
You should probably use a more robust method of getting the username,
since in some cases it is not argument 5. See the man page for
  printcap.

scsi 0: switching target 1 lun 0 return code = 7000
CD-ROM i/o error: dev 0b:00, sector 64
kernel panic: scsi_free: trying to free unused memory

My scsi card is a Trantor 128, CD-ROM is an ancient NEC Intersect 73(1X).

I've been told by an IBM mainframe guy that Linux is for hobbyists and
may never
run. A mechanical enginneer I know is convinced Linux is just another OS

Perl's idiot's guide to solving cgi problems didn't have any helpful

server as a user which could write in all the cgi directories, which
didn't seem right. Currently Apache runs as www-data/www-data which is
enough access to read execute to all the server home directories.

Alright, this is really weird. After adding those lines it ran fine and
now it runs w/o those lines.. maybe my permissions were wrong, but I'm
sure they were 755 root/root. hmm.. Anyhow, now it only runs in the
/cgi-bin and not the user's directories, so the problem is probably suEXEC
since it controls cgi execution in user dirs, right? ... what a mess.

Thanks

You didn't tell us, if you have accepted our advice to take a look at
perl's idiot's guide to solving cgi problems.

Anyway, change the script like this:

 #!/usr/bin/perl

 open (OUT, /tmp/cgitest) or die can't open cgitest file;
 print OUT CGI Script started\n;
 close OUT;

 [rest of the script]

If you don't get a file /tmp/cgitest, then your script doesn't get
executed. Then it is most likely a permission problem.

I know that others have suggested setting the users' shells to /bin/false
- that will disallow telnet and (unless you put /bin/false into
/etc/shells) will also disallow ftp. If I may make a further suggestion:
make the users' shells /usr/bin/passwd. That way, they can change their
password by simply telnetting to your machine (and changing their password
is all that they can do). Also, you may wish to create a
directory under /home (for example, called /home/nologin) with mode 755
owned by root, and then set all the users' home directories to that
instead of the default. (Of course, you can't do this if using something
like qmail, which expects to be able to drop things into users' home
directories)

To ease the bulk creation of accounts, you should look in to the newusers
utility. It does great things all at once. You may also look into the
program pwgen, which generates potential passwords. (e.g. you could use
pwgen in a script which generates a file for newusers)

Yes, I'm aware of that. If the user specifies pap or chap such prompts
will be ignored.

I personally am trying to play around with the multiple ISP problem here
and while in principle it ought to be trivial it is proving to be
 anything but!

Richard has already solved it (though at the cost of seperate config files
for each user).

Inasmuch as hamm seems to create the /etc/ppp/peer directory and the
etc/chatscripts/provider file, I would suggest that any user
configuration tool default to naming the provider files with name
related to the users input thus in effect making the existing provider
 files example files.

I intend to do something like that.

pon itself seems only to lack the ability to accept either an arguement
(which might be a security problem) or a choice which should not be a
 problem.

The user can also simply type 'pppd call provider'.

I also feel as though the whole process, as it currently exists (in bo),
of setting up an ISP connection is horribly messy.

I agree. This is partly an upstream problem. 2.3.1 improves the situation
quite a bit.

I don't know your own priorities but suggest that ALL connection methods
be considered for eventual inclusion in your setup software, even slip.

I monitor the newsgroups for questions about getting on-line. I don't
recall the last time I saw one about slip. Does anyone on this list use
it?

I've dunc to where it deals properly with my isp.

One thing you can do if you aren't used to compiling things is to not
worry about configuring it at compile time. Everything that's important
can be changed in the config file and there is a run time option for
pointing to where the config file lives.

I there something other than the -g option I must use ?

The -g option during compiling _and_ linking should be enough. For g++,
you could use -gstabs+.

What exactly did you do in xxgdb? If you get a segmentation fault while
running the program, try the `where' command to see where the program
was when it crashed. The debugger will not stop a program from
crashing, it will (among other things) let you inspect the status of the
program when it crashes.

I get a few error messages, one of which is a 'can't find partition table'
or something like which scrolls by quickly after a series of messages like
this:

hda: irq timeout: status=0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete}
.
.
.
hda: irq timeout: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataReady}

I also got error messages like this:
end_request I/O error dev 03:00 sector 0

Later, out of the main menu, in the partitioning the disk section, it says
'FDISK FATAL ERROR: cannot read drive' or something like.

When run from a dos floppy, MS (ahem) v6.2 fdisk appear to work fine.

This is all happening with a Maxtor 5.12G drive, model 85120A8. I have
tried
a number of things; booting with/without Maxtor's EZ-Bios, using
Normal/Large/LBA adressing for the drive, booting from dos floppy (via
boot.bat), the CD directly, manually setting the numbers of
heads/cylinders/sectors (though Linux seems to do this as well as I) etc.
etc.

I'm stumped.

Oh, and yes, I did turn off all those BIOS options, like virus check,
shadow
RAM, etc.

Help, assistance and/or wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Type xdpyinfo at a xterm to get these information among many others.

to create _all_ of my partitions [*], and have never encountered any
problems. This includes many extended partitions, that were perfectly
visible by Linux. Personally, I'd sooner distrust cfdisk than DOS
fdisk anyway.

I have had reports from others who

partitions in DOS before beginning the Debian install, and were disturbed

bleach [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Paul, Linux doesn't recognize or even care about primary partitions.
fdisk, cfdisk, etc. recognize them but only because BIOS deals with

Wrong. BIOS has no notion of partitions at all. Linux _does_ 'care'
about partitions - it just isn't particular about which _type_ of
partition it is installed to (like you wrote).

The reason why there can only
be four primary partitions is due to the design of the PC BIOS.

Wrong again - it is due to the design of the partition table, and was
(presumably) done by MS. It has _nothing_ to to with the BIOS. When
they ran into the limitation [*], they created extended partitions, of
which there can be as many as you like.

  Even lilo
ignores the DOS, Windoz, OS2, characteristic of not seeing the
inactive primary partitions (of course OS2 boot manager effectively does
  also).

Wrong again - DOS and Windows have no problem whatsoever with seeing
inactive primary partitions. I have four primary DOS partitions on my
first HD, and DOS sees all of them and assigns them drive letters. Only
OS/2 has this silly limitation, and OS/2's Boot Manager 'hides' (changes
the type from 4 to 0x14, or 6 to 0x16) all other primary DOS partitions
when booting one. The reason LILO doesn't care about partition tables
is that it creates a list of the physical locations of sectors to load
when booting.

  Gertjan.

[*] Actually, the real reason extended partitions were created was as a
quick fix for the (then) MS-DOS limitation of not being able to access
disks that were larger than 32 MB. They removed this limitation around
DOS 4.0, IIRC.

an opportunity to do anything within the debugger.

If I just start xxgdb and try to select the file to debug, following the
selection of the file all the xxgdb window remove themselves from the

The progam that I am running is a simple hello world C program
which runs fine from the command line.

With respect to the use of the`where' command, I am not familiar with
that command. Can you tell me more.

Thanks Peter

I there something other than the -g option I must use ?

The -g option during compiling _and_ linking should be enough. For g++,
you could use -gstabs+.

What exactly did you do in xxgdb? If you get a segmentation fault while
running the program, try the `where' command to see where the program
was when it crashed. The debugger will not stop a program from
crashing, it will (among other things) let you inspect the status of the
program when it crashes.

/afs timeouts from /etc/cron.daily

1997-12-09 Thread Douglas Bates
I recently installed the AFS file system on a Debian Linux machine
running the unstable distribution. Every time the scripts in
/etc/cron.daily are run now I get a series of error messages about
connections timing out for /afs domains. The messages look like
 find: /afs/bcc.ac.uk: Connection timed out
The subject of the message from cron is
Subject: Cron [EMAIL PROTECTED] run-parts /etc/cron.daily

It seems that find is only called at / by updatedb in the script
/etc/cron.daily/find and that script has a configuration file that
puts /afs in the PRUNEPATHS and afs in the PRUNEFS variables. Those
exclusions seem to work if I run the script by hand because I don't
get any timeouts on afs domains.

Are there are other scripts in /etc/cron.daily that may be running a
find from / without excluding /afs? The contents of /etc/cron.daily
for me are
 $ ls /etc/cron.daily
 acct find news standard
 apacheman-db smail sysklogd
 apache.dpkg-oldnetbase smail.dpkg-dist

and make it like so:

#!/bin/bash

anyone have any recommendations of particular modems which would meet my

There are a few of them...

But if you want a good voice mail quality, I'd suggest making your
own. With most packages you need to get acquainted with it, and that
takes a few days, maybe a week. About the amount of time, it takes to
make a voice package. But, you could take a look at mgetty, which
does provide a vgetty program.

In my case, I installed hylafax on my machine, which provides a very
intensive fax functions (even paging). I also had a modem with a
cirrus sound chip, that doesn't have any software support on Linux, so
I programmed an 'egetty' (external getty) for hylafax, that grabs the
call if it's a voice but passes it onto hylafax, if it's fax or data.
The modem itself has all functions for voice mail, it's only a
question of communicating with it in the right order, and then put the
recording in a maildrop.

This is a request for some feedback from current and potential users of
 GPC.
I have GPC 2.0 compiled for hamm, built using GCC 2.7.2.3. The next
version of GPC (currently 971001) is in beta, but is already more stable
than GPC 2.0. There seems to be a few possibilities available. I could
package GPC 2.0, GPC 971001 beta, both versions, or wait until GPC 971001
beta is released as GPC 2.1. Let me know your preferences, if any, within
the next few of days and I will then decide which course of action to take.

I'd say package 2.1 beta, into unstable and 2.0 as stable. Then
update the beta package when GPC get's released.

I have a few pascal programs, that would be nice to compile on Linux
and I'd want to use 2.1 as it is more complete than 2.0.

Upload the beta version into experimental.

questions: Non-internet connected IP Address default ???

1997-12-09 Thread David Oswald
Hello all ...

I have convinced a client of mine who is novell IPX based to install a
debian linux machine into their small company. (all they have ever used
is Novell for file and print shares).

Initially , this new debian machine will be used to serve up internal
web pages and documentation. There are other tasks to be performed based
upon my success with the installation of the machine, and related web
pages. I will be working on this project diligently, as they are
somewhat apprehensive a free software package that can do all that stuff
our novell box did, and more for FREE !!!

I will be needing to install TCPIP stacks on their client machines.

QUESTION: Is their a generic ip addressing scheme that should be used
within this company , since it is not connected in any way to the net.
Does it even matter? I guess I could use any address I want ...

QUESTION: I took a quick tour of their offices, and have noticed the hub
in the closet. The brand - David Systems, never heard of it myself...
Will I have any problems passing TCP/IP over this hub? IP and IPX can
exist together, cant they ??? I don't have any information on this hub
other than it's name...

Are you saying that linux can't handle logical partitions? I am
currently running linux on logical partitions, so I gues I have proven

While I can see how you got that impression (It looked that way to me as
well), I believe what he is refering to is the difference between using
DOS fdisk and Linux fdisk (or cfdisk). Logical partitions created with DOS
fdisk are completely unusable by Linux, and often will result in cfdisk
reporting a broke partition table. Using the original DOS tool to remove
these partitions and replacing them using the Linux tool will usually
 recover the problem.

Thanks Dale! The original poster had used the DOS fdisk to create the logical
partition and of course was having trouble. To all the defenders of logical
partitions, hey what can I say? Properly created partitions are quite usable,
logical or otherwise.

Linux, in general, and Debian, specifically, run quite nicely from a
logical partition. This e-mail was sent from a system runing on a logical
partition, so I know that part is true. I have had reports from others who
have thought they were getting ahead of the game by creating their
partitions in DOS before beginning the Debian install, and were disturbed
to find that Debian didn't think there were any partitions available, or
worse yet that their partition table was broken. Removing them with the
DOS tool has always fixed this problem in the past.

I have a question for you... What happens to the Linux partitions sitting in a
extended partition if the extended partition gets accidently _trashed_?
(like from a virus)

was working great, until a few days ago. Thanks.

 Ok; hmm...
Well, I'm willing to bet that it's still some change your ISP did. Try
 going through a session manually:
After ppp is up, see what value you have for visible_name in
/etc/smail/config (when I use $visible_name$ below, I mean for you to use
this value). Now see what value you have for the smarthost path
variable in /etc/smail/routers. (when I use $smarthost$ below, this is
what I mean for you to actually type)

[testing suggestion snipped]

Now, here's the thing - at some point in this little scenario, you should
get the 551 message that smail keeps complaining about. Assuming you do,
telling people on the list where the error happens might result in someone
being able to solve your problem.

However, if you don't get the error message, then something's really
screwy, and I'll have to think about how you'd go tracking it down in that
 case.

Thanks! It turns out I had my visible_name set to my hostname,
which I figured wouldn't be a problem because I was using the
special smail tranport. And it seems that for a while at least,
it didn't matter. Then my ISP must have changed something, and
all of a sudden, I needed to use the correct value of $visible_name.

Thanks again,

Can't help you on this. IP IPX do coexist without a problem and if the
hub you mention is indeed only a hub, then it won't be a problem.
However, if it's a router, then it will have to support IP as well as IPX.

Yes, use one of the private network blocks set aside for that purpose
by IANA. I typically use any number that starts with 10 and chose a
netmask to suit the number of hosts needed. Ie. 10.0.0.x with a netmask
of 255.255.255.0 gives 254 hosts that can be used.

make-kpkg - minor irritant compiling custom kernel

1997-12-09 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I'm trying to compile a custom kernel (2.0.31) for my machine using
make-kpkg (3.01). I came across a minor irritant. Here is what I do -

1. make config|xconfig|menuconfig

2. Edit drivers/sound/local.h and add #define DESKPROXL (my machine.
drivers/sound/Readme.cards asks me to add this line after make config.

3. make-kpkg -revision Custom.X.Y kernel_image
To my irritation, make-kpkg runs make config again in some kind of
automated mode. And drivers/sound/local.h is re-created without the
#define for DESKPROXL.

Because of make-kpkg running make config again, I am unable to use
(without some emlementary hacking of the Makefile in drivers/sound/)
make-kpkg for creating custom kernels. Is make-kpkg supposed to behave
this way?

RE: XDM seem to hang until I reboot.

1997-12-09 Thread Lewis, James M.
Jay,

I am a little confused. If you are running Exceed from an NT box and
connecting to debian, then exceed is the xserver. You don't need an
xserver on the debian box (or even fonts, for that matter).

If you are also using the window manager on debian, then you have to be
using single window mode in exceed.

I use exceed but I let nt be the window manager. It's a lot simpler and
your mouse clicks and movements don't have to go over the network.

How about a little more detail on the setup...

Linux Java (1.1.3) question...

1997-12-09 Thread Andrew Akins
I have a question that has not been asked on the java-linux list, but
has not been answered. So I'm asking here :)

I am running Debian stable, and using the JDK package downloaded from
Hamm. I have had no problems until this...

I'm writing a RMI program. It works on other platforms (Win NT, HP UX).
But when I try to start the server on Linux, I get an AccessException.
According to the docs, an AccessException occurs when the server tries
to register on a remote machine - this is not occuring, I am registering
on my local machine (using the host name that I set, and confirmed using
the gethostname command).

The programs compile fine - they simply don't register.

And yes, I am running rmiregistry

Any ideas or general comments. If anyone wants to help, I can email some
source code (since it's not completely topical to this list, I won't
post it unless a great number of people ask).

Thanks...

makes the client settings much more controllable by the server.

It's available as a debian package and must be manually configured by
editing the (rather well commented) config file.

umsdos

1997-12-09 Thread Jason Ish
I have to install Linux onto a umsdos file system on one of my computers,
even though I know it isn't a suggested practice.

What steps should I take to install a fresh debian system onto umsdos. I
have a up and running Debian system to make a new kernel and what not.

Thanks for any info or pointers to info.

RE: XDM seem to hang until I reboot.

1997-12-09 Thread Jay Barbee

I am a little confused. If you are running Exceed from an NT box and
connecting to debian, then exceed is the xserver. You don't need an
xserver on the debian box (or even fonts, for that matter).

Humm, let me clearify... I guess I do not need an xserver, but it
wants to be installed when you select the xbase. I will try to
remove it. Let me see if that helps.

If you are also using the window manager on debian, then you have to be
using single window mode in exceed.

I have exceed setup so that I do see a single root window (which it
the backdrop of the xserver, and I have all of my xwindows pop up in
that one root window. I can easily minimize it if I don't want to
look at X. It has never failed to open exceed and get a list of
available XDM servers (there is only one). It is actually exceed's
chooser that shows up, not debian's. Once this is selected, they
next thing should be the Login screen, that never appears.

I use exceed but I let nt be the window manager. It's a lot simpler and
your mouse clicks and movements don't have to go over the network.

Might be something that I need to look at, but seeing that I do not
get anything back makes me think something else is hanging other than
the window manager. I will make a note to try that.

How about a little more detail on the setup...

Most everything should be default. I callup afterstep from the
'.xsession' file, and I have made minor modification to .steprc and
exceed configuration. Exceed has XDMCP is set to Broadcast and
I have the IP of the linux box in the xdmcp.txt host file.

I will try removing the Xserver and Xfonts, but if I am not using
them in the first place, I am going to assume this will not correct
the problem.

Re: Partitioning

1997-12-09 Thread Bill Leach
Lets back up for a moment. The drives themselves care not how they are
used. In scsi (and I suspect IDE), the drive responds to the block
address and knows nothing about partitions, logical or otherwise (or
for that matter, clusters).

It is the device level driver code on the actual interface that talks to
the drive. This interface 'speaks' 'block addresses'.

The partition structure (primary, extended, logical) are all
abstractions of the 'physical' drive. Although most people don't think of
them this way they actually are the top level of the filesystem. What
we typically call the filesystem then is only an instance of a
particular subset within this top level abstraction.

Though it depends upon what one might mean by the term knows, the PC
BIOS _IS_ the implementation of this particular filesystem abstraction.
The decisions as to how to deal with the initial design limitations from
the original and even subsequent BIOS designs is what has given us this
nightmare design.

Linux, for very practical reasons, chooses to honor this brain dead,
convoluted drive abstraction. There is NOTHING about Linux that requires
any of these screwy kludges except that Linux must live within whatever
limitations are imposed by the BIOS with respect to booting. The
practical reasons include such things as people wanting to be able to
have bootable non-Linux operating systems on their drives.

As to lilo -- IT IS lilo that has the problem. While under Linux, lilo
determines and stores the block locations for the files that it must
access to boot the machine, when the boot occurs those blocks must be
accessible through BIOS calls. It is the limitations of the BIOS calls
that started this whole mess!

I repeat: There is _nothing_ inherent in Linux that requires any of this
grew like topsy, screwball design. The m68k versions of Linux have no
such concepts as primary, extended, or logical partitions. I have
not actually seen it done, but I believe that if one connects a scsi drive
from a PC to an Amiga Linux scsi bus, that Linux does recognize the drive
and its' structure.

As can no doubt be discerned, I detest the basic PC design. I would be
willing to defer to your claims that I am wrong concerning primary
partitions being visible in DOS, but am having some trouble with that. My
experience with DOS and Windoz is _very_ limited. Still however, of the
few dozens of machines that I have seen with more than one primary
partition (not including the extended partition which is also, as I
understand, a primary partition), I have never seen drive letters assigned
for more than one such partition (at least on the boot drive).

If you can boot a DOS session, you might want to try doing a fdisk/mbr on
that drive. Not being sure just exactly what you are trying to do though,
realize that issuing the above command _will_ wipe out everything on the
drive. If you do run the command, it would be a pretty good idea to take
a look at your CMOS settings. Besides all of the other stuff recommended
for Linux operation (like no shadow ROM, no BIOS virus checking, no BIOS
APS, etc.), be sure that the BIOS is set to handle the size of that drive
(ie: LBA or its equivalent should be enabled).

No, idea about the hub though. It should be willing to accept the Linux

The IP address offered by Linux during installation is one of the
addresses that is designated for local net only use. Internet machines
are supposed to recognize that these addresses should not be promulgated

Jim,

I am not sure about the server reset. If it is a default setting, It
is there. I will double check. I believe there is something in it
not being about to write to the display. But it is NOT on the exceed
side. It is something on the Linux side that is preventing it.

Another quark about the Exceed/Linux thing is that Exceed runs off of
a SMB share on that linux box. I have had it like this for more than
a year when I used Slackware, but only a month or so with debian. I
am not sure it has anything to do with it, but I thought I would note
it to you.

There are several xdm logs that seem to repeat themselves. My only
problem is I am not sure if the times correspond to the time it seemed
to die. I will look at them and if they are worth anything, I will
bounce it to you tonight.

While it might appear the XDM does not get my request to be managed,
remember that I have had a hangup while actually running a session.
What I have open at the time runs fine, however, I cannot open
another window or click on any of the buttonbars to do anything.

Thanks Jim for your quick response...

Re: dunc pppd configuration script

1997-12-09 Thread Bill Leach
Hi John;

One question that I have: Is it true that ALL ISPs that use chap or pap
authentication also do not require an initial login? I don't personally
know of any exceptions but I also don't see any technical reason why it
would not be possible to use chap following login.

It also seems to me that there are three ways to initiate ppp for login
type ISPs. The first is that upon login, the host starts the LCP
negotiation, 2) The host waits for a \n and then starts negotiation, 3)
the host requires a specific command after login to start ppp. Though I
have not seen or even heard of this, I presume that another possible
scenerio is that the host monitors for an incomming LCP negotiation.

The non-login modes are probably much more straight forward (though I
note that bo examples and docs did not seem to even recognize that there
was such a thing). Is there any chance that there is a
non-authenticated ppp initiation followed by a login in use?

Richards multiple provider solution

I will have to have a look at that. I seem to have it solved now but
have not yet tried under other user accounts... so I might be under the
illusion that I have it working right.

John, I am NOT ragging on you (or anyone else really). While Linux has
the potential to meet anyone's needs better than anything else
available, trying to produce packages and configuration utilities that can
deal with all of the variation (or even most of the common ones) is
anything but trivial.

[and yes, I know that my anyone's needs claim is a bit far fetched.
For example people whoes needs include always having compatibility with
M$ product files will find Linux falling short often--how often depends
upon how often M$ releases a new version or update]

I think that anyone that even casually watches the Linux development
effort just about has to be in awe of the accomplishments. The rapidity
with which developers seem to deal with new information is stunning.

If you are also using the window manager on debian, then you have to
be
using single window mode in exceed.

It's a lot simpler
and
your mouse clicks and movements don't have to go over the network.

How to get slrn colored in xterm ?

1997-12-09 Thread Peter Prohaska
hi all,

I´m using slrn for reading news and do NOT want to change the app ;)

Now, when starting slrn from within the standard linux terminal, I get
that nifty color-spreading frontend. But when started in an xterm, it
looks sad monochrome.

Does anyone know if can get colors in xterms, too -- and how?

thanx,
  peter.

Debian needs guinea pigs

1997-12-09 Thread Brandon Mitchell
Do you have a little spare time?
Do you have some extra hard drive space?
Do you enjoy being the first to try something new?
Do you want to be on a low volume mailing list (compared to debian-user)?
Do you want to help debian become the most popular linux distribution?
Do you want women to adore you? (ok, maybe we can't do this)

If you answered yes to zero or more of the above, you're a perfect
candidate to join the Debian Testing Group! We're looking for a few good
guinea pigs in preparation of the Debian 2.0 release. Basically, we
install as many times as possible (although one is more than enough),
making sure all the programs work. If you are interested in joining, send
me a short message detailing what you can do, and in a few days, you'll be
added to our mailing list. New users are welcome!

I've included a more detailed description of our testing process below to
give you an idea of how this works.

DEBIAN TESTING GROUP PROCESS

The following document summarizes the methods used by the Debian Testing
Group. Testing is primarily focused around the time when the distribution
is Frozen before a release, but test reports are welcomed at any time
either before the freeze or after it. All reports should be posted to:
debian-testing@lists.debian.org, while all bugs should be reported
according to: http://www.debian.org/Bugs;.

I. Upgrade Install Testing

The first type of testing to occur during this period is upgrade testing.
The tester should attempt to point dselect from an older installation to a
Debian mirror. Any error messages during the installation should be
reported along with any work-arounds. Once the upgrade is complete, as
many individual packages should be tested as possible (see section III).

II. Base Install Testing

The second type of testing involves an installation from scratch. This
will usually involve creating the rescue, root, and base disk (or any of
the other options, including the zero floppy install). Once this is
complete, the tester should attempt to install any desired packages and
then test as many individual packages as possible (see section III).

III. Individual Package Testing

A list of packages and their checklist will be kept in one large file.
This should be kept at http://bhmit1.home.ml.org/deb/checklist.html;.
If you find a package that fails an item in the checklist, please report
it as a bug. Once you have verified that all test have passed, you can
report the package as being tested. If you are only able to test some of
the items in the checklist, you may report this too, but specify what you
have tested.

The checklist will initially be created by the maintainer. However,
anyone is free to add to or modify a checklist by sending e-mail to the
testers mailing list or [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Note that there will also be a checklist for all packages, and a checklist
for groups of packages. If the package belongs to a group, this will be
an item in it's list.

During a testing period, a list of untested packages will periodically be
posted to the testing list. Copies will also be sent to debian-devel
(less frequently) so that any developers can assist in the testing
process.

Add the following line to your ~/.Xdefaults or ~/.Xresources, depending
on which one you use:

xterm*customization:-color

You may also choose to add it to /etc/X11/Xresources, to make it a
system-wide default.

Thanks,

got around that by running lynx from an rxvt. There it looks like it's

Actually, though that will enable color for everything else, it will not
help slrn or other slang-based programs. For those, you have to either use
the command line option they have that enables color (for slrn, -C), or you
need to set the COLORTERM environment variable. Here is an example of how I
set the latter in my /etc/zshrc:

# Set COLORTERM for s-lang programs if this is a color terminal
if [[ $TERM = xterm ]] || [[ $TERM = linux ]]; then
export COLORTERM=y
fi

For bash, you'd want something like this: (untested)

# Set COLORTERM for s-lang programs if this is a color terminal
if [ $TERM = xterm -o $TERM = linux ]; then
COLORTERM=y
export COLORTERM
fi

dselect on unstable dist., how?

1997-12-09 Thread Alexis S. Panagides
I am finally making the transition to the libc6. I am following the HOW-TO
but am having a hard time finding the recommended files like 'libreadline2'
at ftp.debian.org (although I found libreadlineg2).

Beyond file location problems I would like to not use dpkg and use dselect
instead but I am having a hard time pointing dselect to the unstable
distribution. I keep getting,

Warning: Could not find a Packages file in unstable/binary-i386
This may not be a problem if the directory is a symbolic link

then the dselect update procedure throws an error due to no package file.

Furthermore, I downloaded and installed dpkg-1.4.0.19 and dpkg-1.4.9 from
unstable but I still have the same problems.

I have poked through the arquives on this one but didn't see anything. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Can't help you here. I don't run Apache, and my server always runs cgis
in user homedirectories as the respective user (if I allow cgi execution
for that user at all), so I don't need suEXEC.

1. Check that cgi scripts not in /cgi-bin/ are allowed at all.
2. (only a thought) cd to the servers document root. su to www-data.
cd to the directory where this script is. Run suEXEC with this script
(maybe suexec scritpt.pl ?).

Also I believe you will get better answers in a apache or cgi-authoring

twin again

1997-12-09 Thread Rick Hawkins

I got somewhat farther in hunting down twin, and some advice from their side.
It seems that there are libc functions not present in our version.
Particularly,

unsigned int * _dl_find_hash(char *, char *, int , char *, int);
   ^^^
and

   for (erp = _dl_loaded_modules; erp; erp = erp-next)

Is there a way to add these somehow? and some of the comments seemed to hint
that these would be present in redhat.

Re: make-kpkg - minor irritant compiling custom kernel

1997-12-09 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Hi,

There was a typo that caused the configuration to be done
multiple times; I think in the latest version that has been
fixed (I realize that may be little consolation to people running
 stable 1.3.1 rXXX).

Unfortunately, to ease the task of people who maintain a
kernel source on the local machine and install patches to keep
the kernel uptodate, the configuration script runs make oldconfig to
ensure that all the dependencies are in sync.

Until now, I was not aware of any problems created by doing
so: and thus indeed, make-kpkg is behaving as intended.

What we may need here is to add a target to make-kpkg: namely,
configure. In which case, you need to do:

1. make config|xconfig|menuconfig
1a. make-kpkg configure
2. Edit drivers/sound/local.h and add #define DESKPROXL
3. make-kpkg -revision Custom.X.Y kernel_image

If you do step 1a, then make-kpkg shall not re-run the config
again in step 3. Does this sound satisfactory? (most people skip
steps 1a and 2, as before)

Sort of, install the dpkg-mountable package, and then do this:

where status and avail are the status and available files - normally
/var/lib/dpkg/status
/var/lib/dpkg/available

This returns a list of packages that you might want to go and FTP - very
useful!
