Avocent 100 KVM switch problems

2012-08-13 Thread Gary Roach
I just purchased an Avocent Switchview 100-4 KVM+Audio switch. I have 2
Debian systems and 1 Windows 2000 system. Everything works fine except
that the scroll lock key will not switch channels when connected to a
Debian system but works fine when connected to the Windows system.
Further, the NumLock light is reversed with the Debian systems and works
correctly with the Windows system. Why the operating system should
effect the switches operation is beyond my ken. I talked to the factory
and they don't understand it either. I am using a Microsoft 4000, USB,
Ergonomic keyboard and Microsoft USB laser mouse. Normally I wouldn't
bother but the switch is buried under the computer table and is hard to
control manually. Has anyone else had this problem and know of a fix.
The SkrLk + SkrLk + End that is suggested on some of the web sites
doesn't work.

Hi

change to the digest form. Can I just re-subscribe to the digest form or
do I have to unsubscribe from the standard for as well.

If you want to post replies, I wouldn't do it :-/

Agreed strongly! Please do not post replies from a digest.

Can I just re-subscribe to the digest form or do I have to unsubscribe
from the standard for as well.

You will have to unsusbscribe for one (normal) and then subscribe for
the other (digest) but again, reconsider it... if you don't want to store
messages in your hard disk you can use a newsreader and NNTP, no
subscription nor local space needed.

People using digests usually don't know how to reply using them and
cause a lot of problems. Please don't be the source of problems.
Using a digested mailing list is hard! You need special tools in
order to burst the digest to read and reply to it.

As Camaleón writes people that think they might want the digest form
would be much better served by using the newsgroups. Or Gmane. Or
other web archive reader. I use the mailing list interface. But to
avoid the problems of a digest I will suggest Gmane as one of the less
objectionable alternatives. Try this.

Overview:
   http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.user

Web page reader using frames and threads:
   http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.user

Bob

While my MUA is able to handle replies to digest correctly, digest
anyway caused that much trouble, that I canceled it and subscribed to
the normal mailing list again.

YMMV,
Ralf

OK, OK
I'm convinced. I'll stay with the normal list. I just needed to get used
to the difference. I quit the digest because it broke for me. This form
takes a little longer to go through but not significantly so.

I hope that this is the correct way to reply. I don't want to clutter up
Ralf's normal in box with debian messages. I notice that a few of the
lists messages are showing up in mine. The filter doesn't catch them
because they are directly from the sender instead of from debian lists.

Are you using a threaded mailer? I can only guess that you are not.
In which case you should try it. It makes reading the mailing list
quite a pleasant experience.

And let me note that message threading is not what Gmail and MS call
conversations based upon subject. That is yet a different way of
sorting messages. One that is lacking in my not so humble opinion.

I'm using icedove. It does a good job of underlining or dropping down
threads that are active. Any older threads, for which I have special
interest , I just tag with a color. I found the out of order dates that
are created a bit confusing at first but am now used to it.

Gary R.

It looks okay to me. I see no fault with it.

I notice that a few of the lists messages are showing up in
mine. The filter doesn't catch them because they are directly from
the sender instead of from debian lists.

Are you talking about people who CC the original sender of the message
in addition to the mailing list? That is against the mailing list
code of conduct which specifically says not to CC the sender too. It
is a perpetual problem regardless. When that happens you get a direct
copy along with the mailing list copy. And the extra discussion
concerning it on the mailing list saying Please don't CC me as I read
the mailing list already.

For me it means that I need to verify that I got the message by the
mailing list too (which always comes later so I usually ignore it for
a while first) and that it wasn't a reply only to me. So I can't just
ignore them. I have to spend effort to determine what is going on
with the message and where it came from and how it got to me. What a
pain! And usually from people asking for help. My editorial remark
is that if people want help then the easiest thing is to make it easy
to be helped and they will get more of it and of a higher quality too.

I have come to the conclusion that humans are intrinsically bad at
communication. Apparently it isn't common sense. Apparently it does
actually require the person to put some effort into learning how to
interact with others. I wonder if we will ever master it? Na.
Probably not. File it as a wishlist bug and tag it as wontfix. :-)

Xsane error with Workforce 645 printer

2012-09-07 Thread Gary Roach

Hi everyone

Our old epson printer just threw a rod so we replace it with a new Epson
Workforce 645 printer. Nice printer. I am trying to get the scanner to
work with Xsane and keep getting the error Failed to start
scanner:Error during device I/O The printer is setup as a stand alone
network printer with a wifi connection. I am trying to scan multiple
documents (auto feeder) in color and using the PDF to PC setting. All my
linux boxes find the printer and seem to do standard print operations
correctly. I'm using Debian Squeeze on this particular system.

When setting the printer front panel for scanning the last step shows
USB connection on the readout. Could the wifi connection be the problem?

I am a little miffed that Epson has chosen to drop support for Windows
2000 from its driver for this model. Anyone know how to get around that.

workforce 645 printer can't find other network assets

2012-09-10 Thread Gary Roach
Earlier I was complaining about Xsine not working with this new printer
but the main problem seems to be that the printer doesn't see any of the
computers on the hardwired network.

I am running Squeeze, Wheezy and Win2K on various systems on the
hardwired part of the LAN. I have Samba installed on my linux systems
along with winbind. Smbd, nmbd and winbind are running. When I try to
scan from the printer to a network computer the printers list of where
to send the scans shows a usb connection ( it is wireless to my
Actiontec M1424MR router) and nothing else. I have an XP laptop that I
connected wirelessly to the network. The printer found this and listed
It properly. The rest of the network systems find the XP as well.

In summary:

1. The 3 Linux machines, using Smb4K, and the Win2K machine , using My
Network Neighborhood, find all of the computers both hardwired and
wireless,

2. All of the Linux systems and the XP system can print to the printer.
3. The XP wireless using my network neighborhood, finds none of the
hardwired computers.

4. The printer, in scan mode, finds the XP machine and nothing else.
5. The printer scans correctly to the wireless XP machine.

In Epson's infinite wisdom they do not supply a driver for Win2K and
older systems any more. Because of this and their attitude when they
hear Linux, I would not buy this printer under some circumstances. It's
too bad because the printer seems to be a good unit.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated. I suspect that the Samba setup
is the problem but have no idea what to do to fix it. I use Swat with Samba.

I went through the info you gave me and have installed the
epson-inkjet-printer-201106w_1.0.1-1lsb3.2_i386.deb driver file. I
also have Xsane installed. I still get Failed to start scanner: Error
during device I/O errors. My XP handles the scanner fine.

I don't know where that deb file comes from but it looks for the
printer not the scanner. Anyway, did you read the mentioned forum post?

I read the posts. The deb file came directly from Epson. It was listed
as the driver for the Workforce 645 printer. I assume that the scanner
driver should be included. Maybe not?

I am concentrating on the scanners inability to find the hardwired
(LInux) computers because this is an obvious problem that must be fixed.
This problem shows up when one tries to use the printers control panel
to scan and then send the PDF files to a particular computer on the net.
Again, this works with my wireless XP but none of the hardwired
computers. I am assuming that it is a Samba setup problem.

And I already gave you some hints (yes, also for this :-P):

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/09/msg00472.html

Greetings,

1. I checked the router. The instructions say that the router is setup
to allow wireless printing. In addition, my XP wireless works fine for
print and scan. It also shows up on the scan control console.

2. I ran the network connection test from the scan console. I shows
everything OK.

3. I will run the ethernet test asap. I am having severe back pain at
present and really don't want to crawl around under the computer table.
I'll see if I can't patch it from the top. I'lll be back with this.

4. All printing from all computers ( Win2k accepted) works fine. I
haven’t checked the fax functions yet. The ink level indicator never
seems to work but not worth fooling with.

Re: [OT] Re: workforce 645 printer can't find other network assets

2012-09-12 Thread Gary Roach

OK. Lets start over.

Configuration:
1. Epson Workforce 645 All in one
2. Network mix of hardwired Win2K and linux computers and an XP
wireless. All with fixed IP addresses.

3. 645 now hardwired to router. Fixed IP address set in router and 645.
4. Router - Actiontec M1424-WR plus Cisco extention switch (Lan to Lan
connection). I have locked in most of the IP addresses for my usual
hardware but still have the capability to use DHCP for new stuff.

Software
1. XP loaded with Epson drivers and Epson Event Manager from CD supplied
with 645.

2. Linux machines:
2.1 A mix of Debian Squeeze and Wheezy systems.
2.2 Samba and Cups installed (and configured?).
2.3 iscan_2.29.1-5-usb0.1.ltd1.7_i386.deb and iscan-dat_1.17.0-2_all.deb
installed with dpkg.

2.4 Xsane, sane and gimp installed

Performance:
All computers with the exception of the Win2k print to the printer. All
of the print functions seem to work. The exception being the ink
level indicators that don't show on the Linux machines. Remote
FAX not checked. I don't care. The copier works fine. The scan control
from the XP works fine.

Problems:
1.1. When attempting to scan a document from Linux, Xsane produces the
error: Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. At this
point, the document is run through the scanner but no scan is produced.
1.2. When Xsane is purged from the system and sane's scanadf or
scanimage is used, I get the error: Could not send command to scanner.
Check the scanners's status. This same error occurs if iscan is run
through gimp. The scanners control panel reads: Communication Error.
Check the printer connection and try again.
2.1 The 645 still can't see any of the Linux systems on the consoles
readout when the Scan to PC mode is chosen. I can probably live with
this but an office of any size would be seriously inconvenienced. I
think this problem may be caused by Epson's Event Manager software. I
found at least one instance on the net where someone was complaining
about the quirky nature of this piece on drech.

Editorial: The Event Manager seems to be designed to freeze Linux/Unix
out of the market and to rid the user base of older Microsoft products.
If I were a real suspicious person I would see Microsofts hand in this.
Of course if that's true then Epson's management is a bunch of idiots.
Microsofts own management says that they loose about 20% of sales to
piracy, 10% to Linux and about 5% to Apple. That means that Epson is
throwing away about 10% of their business in this Workforce line by poor
support. Stupid.

Request:
Help me get Xsane or its equal to work . Any light shed on the console
listing problem might be icing on the cake but would be appreciated.

Sincerely

Gary R.

According to the Epson FAQ, you have now the right packages installed:

http://download.ebz.epson.net/faq/linux/faq_ls_2.html

(note that you may also want to install the network and image processing
plugins)

Performance:

Okay, so printing form Debian works, you only miss the information to get
the ink levels, right?

Epson provides a manual for the printer and a list of Linux FAQS, maybe
you can find something of interest there:

http://download.ebz.epson.net/man/linux/escp.html
http://download.ebz.epson.net/faq/linux/

Sadly, Epson explicitely says that they do not support the linux software
(sigh).

Problems:
1.1. When attempting to scan a document from Linux, Xsane produces the
error: Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. At this
point, the document is run through the scanner but no scan is produced.

Does your Xsane version support this device?

In addition, if Epson has a dedicated tool for this, e.g., iscan to
obtain the images from the scanner, try with it.

1.2. When Xsane is purged from the system and sane's scanadf or
scanimage is used, I get the error: Could not send command to scanner.
Check the scanners's status. This same error occurs if iscan is run
through gimp. The scanners control panel reads: Communication Error.
Check the printer connection and try again.

Run iscan from command line and as root user to discard a problem with
the permissions. Also, as you have connected the AIO using an ethernet
cable, the corresponding network plugin package may be needed so the
device can be properly detected by your system.

2.1 The 645 still can't see any of the Linux systems on the consoles

This can be the same problem that you experience when you try to
communicate with the AIO scanner from Debian and get a communication
error. Installing the network plugin could also help with this :-?

Editorial: The Event Manager seems to be designed to freeze Linux/Unix

Gary... Windows 2000 is now unsupported by Microsoft and hardware

Actually, I found a driver for the Win2K system on the HP web site. It

You're welcome.

Greteings,

The last post for this subject. Be advised that the Officejet Pro 8600
works great and was easy to set up on all of my systems. I had to
download a linux driver from HP's web site but it was easy to find and
easy to install. Two glitches. The paper feed won't work with Staples
Photo paper. It works with Epson and HP paper fine. Doing the droop test
over the edge of a table showed that the Saples paper is about twice as
stiff as the others. There is a spring loaded deflector in the paper
path that is supposed to deflect the paper upward as it comes out of the
tray. The stiffer paper won't make the bend. The other problem has to do
with network recognition and is probably a Samba problem. I'm starting a
new thread for that one.

See you all and thanks.

Film scanner software / hardware.

2012-09-20 Thread Gary Roach
After review a gazillion scanners I have concluded that the Plustek
OpticFilm 7400 is my best choice for my needs and my budget.
Unfortunately, they don't support Linux. Vuescan doesn't support this
Plustek scanner. Does anyone know of a software solution to this problem
or know of a scanner for less than about $250 that has 48 bit color,
will *actually* resolve better than 3000dpi, has dust removal, has a
Dmax = 3.6. and has multiple scan capability to improve contrast.

I just finished a disastrous round with all in one printer and don't
want to get into another one with film scanners.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gary R.

PS :
1. The HP Workforce Pro 8600 with downloaded files from HP works great.
2. The package gscan2pdf has some minor bugs but is a fantastic PDF
generator.

3. Stay away from Epson.

Adding user to dual boot laptop

2012-10-09 Thread Gary Roach
I have a Toshiba Qosmio with 2 60 GB hard drives, one with Windows XP
and the other with Debian Squeeze. I just decided to add my wife as a
user to the linux side. For some reason the login screen won't work. I
set up her account in passwd and group and I set up her home directory.
I can log her in as an su user with no problem. When I re-boot the
system and the splash screen comes up (KDE4), I can enter her name and
password but the system rejects the pass word. I've checked everything
about 3 times and can find nothing wrong. I would guess that I have
missed some niggally detail. The Windows XP side works fine. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I read the reference but no joy. My login problem
is happening at the kdm level before the OS is even started (I think).
How does one activate /deactivate the initial login screen. I know this
is possible. I think I set this up when I initially installed Debian
from the iso network installation disk. I probably prompted me through
the process at the time. I have since completely forgotten what I did at
the time. I think I need to re configure kdm somehow.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Still no fix. In answer to all of
your questions:

1. The most telling would be the suggestion to hit Ctl+Alt+F1 to get the
cmd line and try logging in. The log in worked fine with my wife's user
name and password.

2. My wife's uid is 1001 so no problem here.

3. Permissions, owners and structure for files passwd, shadow and group
are exactly the same as my entries.

4. Dpkg-reconfigure kdm pauses for a few seconds and returns to the cmd
prompt.

5. We are going to be traveling and I don't want to remove the password
protection from the computer.

There is a Systems Setting - Advanced - Login Manager window that has
possibilities but I haven't been able to figure out how to start the
application as root. Most of the functions are grayed out.

How about user home directory and other user file permissions (which
shouldn't belong to root)?

That has been checked out and is all OK. The alt F2 to kdesu did allow
me to open the system settings as root but didn't help the problem. I
have another single boot system running squeeze that works just fine. I

Have you told us the tool with which you created the new user? It's
not clear to me the canonical way of doing it, actually, googling

adduser wife

On Debian, yes. It calls useradd, which is available in most/all
Linuxes.

It does add quite a few, but not necessarily all of interest. I believe
it does add the audio group, failure of which is the cause of some

Actually, I used adduser and then manually checked the entries in

I have done this before and had no problem. The process is fairly

Clobbered digest volumes (more info)

2012-06-15 Thread Gary Roach
Looking closer at the problem, (see Clobbered digest volumes in Volume
2012 #1342) I find that I occasionally receive a correct message. The
returns of my own are correct and some others. The bad messages all have
the header information after the text and trigger the error message:

Error: msgHdr.folder is null
Source File: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js
Line: 2696
The ones received correctly have the header / text in the correct order
and don't generate the error. It appears that icedove can't find the
header information if it is in the reverse order. Duh!!.

So the question is why am I receiving messages with the order flipped???

I also note that the full (expanded) header is alway printed in both
cases even though icedove header switch is set to normal.

BackupPC restore problem

2012-11-14 Thread Gary Roach

Hi all

I sent a copy of this to the backuppc mailing list but response is a bit slow.
So if someone has some experience with backuppc and can help, it will be
sincerely appreciated.

I got home from vacation, fired up the systems and one of the hard drives was
trashed. Two days of recovery attempts didn't work so I reformatted and
reinstalled the Debian Squeeze system. I re-established the rsyncd connection
to the backup system and started a restore from the GUI. The next morning I
found all of the proper directory structure installed but no data in the
directories. I then tried to create a tar file. The file created held only the
directory
strucure. The data is all there in a full backup of the system. I can even open
the files on the backup disk. Anyone know what could cause this problem. I
found one other person that had this problem and solved it by switching off the
proxy service in the browser. This didn't work for me.

The instructions for creating a tar file at the command line are beyond my ken.
It might work if you could get BackupPC_tarCreate to actually run, find the
proper security setup for it and figure out where to put the tar file. I gave
up.

Thanks in advance

Gary R

What do you mean by trashed?

Have you run any hardware diagnostics on the trashed drive, such as
those by the drive manufacturer? For example:

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Are you trying to use the trashed drive?

David

The /bin directory appears to have been corrupted somehow. With Knoppix
I could gain access to all of the other data but was unable to access
/bin. I don't know why this happened and that worries me. I tested
everything during reformatting and installation and found nothing wrong
with the drive. I'm not too worried because I have a complete backup
system. Of course I am having trouble with the restore. The data's all
there on the backup disk but BackupPC only restored the directories and
none of the data. I am trying to create a tar file and manually transfer
the data across but am having similar problems. The documentation for
manually manipulating BackupPC is obtuse to say the least.

SD card formatting problem

2012-11-17 Thread Gary Roach
I have a 32GB sd card that I have been trying to use as a transfer disk
for a 19GB file. Each time, the file copies (cp command) to 4GB and
stops. I tried to reformat to vfat with the same results. The df command

the card came formatted to vfat. Any suggestions? Can the card be
formatted to ext3? Would that help? Is the card the problem? I am using
a SanDisk USB card reader, model SDDR-113 which is supposed to handle
32GB cards. Debian Squeeze and Wheezy systems gave same results.

I've had to restore one of my systems from cold iron. Aptitude seems to

I have tried cleaning and reloading the archives. That didn't help. The

Limitations of vfat file system, also does not archive file attributes.

afaik, you can format with any file system. If compatabiltiy between a

ext2 for this, no journal.

Moonlight that was trying to create a Mono and Linux counterpart, but I think
it has stalled. Microsoft is deemphasizing Silverlight in favor of HTML 5 and
Javascript, so a lot of the motivation for it is gone. Anyway, Moonlight can't

After calling the call center and get the news, I just canceled it,

It works. I have done so. However, It was not ideal. Installing Silverlight
in Wine was painful, and Firefox runs not well for me under Wine. Javascript,
in particular, is very slow, and requires much patience. Other than Netflix, I
can't think of a good reason to ever want to use it instead of native

Windows on their Linux box?

Gary R., is this what you're talking about:

As I see, you don't need a computer for it to work. Is that so? Just

Hi Beco

No computer needed. The Vizio box does it all. There are probably other
manufacturers but I think Vizio usually gives you more bang for your
buck. I've found there products to work well and be reliable. They are
also mostly made in Irvine California, a few miles down the road from
where I live. It gives a whole new meaning to the term - factory return.
If your not in the US then another brand may be better for you.

Gary R.

Hi Aaron. Yes, I want (nobody really needs netflix), but it's
probably best to stick with Debian. Why people tend to suggest you
leave? So non-gentle :( But regarding VM, thanks. I've tried that, and
it works fine. I need VM to help students when they insist in use
other systems... I wish everyone uses Debian. Well, we can't win

Mark, your answer was the most intriguing. So, if they are moving to
HTML5, we can expect it to work on Linux in the future, can't we? That
sounds promising.
Do you have any link to a Roku box. Never heard of it. I have a

Unfortunately I don't feel I have the knowledge necessary to start one.
As an example, if I look up 'System Maintenance' I should get a sub list

using Debian linux for over 15 years and am still finding commands that
are useful. The worst part is that I am loosing commands at about the

There are lighter options than xscreensaver, :-) Such as xautolock +

Screen savers are pretty but with the advent of LCD / Plasma screens
they are no longer needed. To really save your monitor you need to put
it in standby as soon as possible. The old CRT type monitors needed
something to constantly change the image on the screen to keep the
electron beam from burning a permanent pattern onto the CRT face. The
new technologies don't have this problem but do have a wear and tear
problem with the back lighting system. So turn off the lighting if you
want to save your monitor. Then again, screen savers are interesting art
work.

Restore problems with backuppc and apache

2012-11-23 Thread Gary Roach
I have a Wheezy system setup with backuppc to back up 3 computers -
all ext3/4 systems. I have been trying to restore to a cold iron system.
Every time I try to create a restore.tar file the process stops at 331KB
when the file should be about 21GB. The file contains the directories
and no data. The files on the backup system have all of the data and
look OK. Several other people with similar setups have tried the exact
same commands (GUI) and have not had this problem. I started thinking
that all of the GUI information runs through Apache2 so I turned logging
up to debug on apache and made another attempt at creating a tar file.
Lo and behold, I got the following error message in the Apache error log:

[Date stuff] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Out of memory! referrer:
http//backupsystem/backuppc/index.cgi

I then opened a systems monitor program, re-ran things again and watched
the system ram max out and then the swap file start filling up. When the
swap file got to about 1.2GB the process quit. The swap file is set to 2
GB so I am not sure what is going on here. If the problem is with my
Apache setup it might explain why no one else is having the problem. I
looked at all of the other pertinent log files but found no other
entries. Specifically, the syslog and kern.log did not show OOM kernel
shutdown. Communicates between computers is being handled by rsyncd.
Can this be a problem if the tar file is being created on the same
computer where the backup data is stored. Any ideas?

I've only owned one laptop so my experience is somewhat limited. But I
think you need to as some of the following questions:

1. Are you a gamer or more of a normal user or a media freek.
2. How portable must the unit be.
3. How long must it run on batteries.
4. How much are you willing to pay.
5. Do you do graphics - need a lot of screen real-estate.

I own a Qosmio G25-av315. It weighs about 9.5 lbs and gets about 1 hr on
the batteries. It's more of a portable computer than a laptop. For this
I get an 18 inch screen, all kinds of media capability, two 60GB hard
drives and a raft of compatibility headaches. I set the system up as a
dual boot with Debian Linux on one disk and Windows XP on the other. The
Debian side has never been completely functional - but adaquate for my
needs. The XP side is fully functional but is fast becoming a problem.
There seems to be no upgrade path to Windows 8. This last problem is
going to get worse the more complicated the laptop. This Qosmio has a TV
receiver (never used) and dolby sound system. Trying to find linux
drivers for some of this stuff means that firmware has to be swapped out
in the fly. Not a good situation.

My advise. By only what you absolutely need. Forget the bells and
whistles unless you really have a specific need. Simple is cheaper and
probably more useful.

Unless you need this within the next 6-12 months you might consider
waiting to see what happens with bigger ePaper screens. I want a tablet
but won't buy until I find one with a ePaper screen. The battery life
goes up by a factor of 10 or more and the screen is readable at very
obtuse angles and in direct sun light.

i hope this helps

Have you tried using Calibre? I did not need any Kindle software on
my Debian computer to manage my Kindle. Calibre does it all for me.

Kobo at least is pretty terrible for PDFs. Slow, badly sized text, no
reflow...Fundamentally PDF is not a good format for ebooks. I don:t
know if the experience is better on a Kindle or similar.

Same on Kindle except when you format pdf for A6 pages.

I had some success converting pdf's to mobi format - escpecially when
it was created with latex with hyperref. I think Calibre first try to
convert it to html and then to epub or mobi or whatever format you prefer.

Can't help with the remote stuff. Maybe Kindle's wispernet would
be useful?

I have a Kindle Touch. I do not use whispernet, but my local home
wifi-network and it works very nicely. I can even send documents by
email to the Kindle or even from my Macbook' s Desktop using Amazon's
Send to Kindle software. And then you can choose to which Kindle
you want to send it. I and my wife have both Kindles registered on the
same account at Amazon. Then I also have a software Kindle on my
mobile phone and on my macbook. I can use Send-to-Kindle to send a
file to all of them.

I find it surprising that people are recommending tablets and
phones... IMHO phone are next to useless for any serious amount of
book reading, they are just too small, and the tablets have the
battery life issue. That is what is great about an ereader, you charge
it like once a week tops.

I charge my Kindle once about once in a month or month and a half.

The whole DRM issue is a bad joke. I heard that France outlawed them. If
you load a copy of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and Calibre (both
freeware) on to your system and properly set up the software, the DRM is
automatically stripped off the document on download and Calibre
reformats to any reader you want to use. The instructions are easy to
find on the internet. I am not a believer in pirating but there is a
limit as to how much screwing over the consumer in this country can
tolerate before everyone doesn't care any more. I'm still tinkering
around with the whole DRM issue and still have a lot to learn. I do know
that DRM's are a pain in the posterior for the customer and do
absolutely nothing for copy right protection.

My latest fiasco was today when I tried to download a book from my local
library. One book I couldn't get because the copy was already loaned out
(Yes it was an eBook.)
This is unbelievable. I downloaded the other book into my computer
directly. That doesn't work. I had to load through ADE. This sent it
directly to Calibre which I suspect stripped off all protection. I am
supposed to have the book for a week at which point it is supposed to go
poof. I'll be interested to see if this happens. I think that you can
probably keep a copy of all of your books in Calibre, copy them to disk
and tell the suppliers to go to hell.

Oner last thing. In defense of Amazon and Barnes and Noble, most of this
garbage is coming from the publishers. With the present business model,
the publisher sells the book to the distributor who is required to sell
be book at the price the publisher dictates. The seller gets 30% of the
sale. The US and several European governments are suing several
publishing groups (read monopolies) over this practice. I guess the
publishers need the money to pay bloated salaries to their top
executives and line the pockets of their stock holders. Too bad we don't
have capitalism in this country. I died with the Civil War.

Well, that was rather rambling, but to me is sounds like there is a
fault in your motherboard. My guess is the heat from your hairdryer
(how did you figure that out anyway?!) either dries out some bit that
overly sensitive to moisture, or causes thermal expansion of some part
that does not make enough contact otherwise... although in the second

Two years old, huh? So the warranty is.probably well over. I would say

Hi Mark,

The first thing I would do is run a post check on the motherboard. If
you are lucky your board has a built in post card. If not, you will have
to buy one. They are nice to have around for such things. In case you
are not familiar with post cards they have a numeric readout that
ratchets up through the motherboards post process. The final number
displayed can be looked up in a table that will tell you where and
probably why the process failed. I would advise researching the post
process on the net. If yours is built in ( like my intel i5-750 board)
then instructions will be in your board manual. Intermittant problems
are a bitch.

What happened? And what did you do when you say you did a major

Look at that error message more closely. It is concerning on a couple
of different levels. It is trying to open libstlport_gcc.so.4.6 but
it fails. Start there. Why isn't that library available? (But why is
it looking for that library at all?)

   $ ldd -d -r /usr/lib/ure/bin/javaldx
 linux-vdso.so.1 = (0x7c39f000)
 libuno_sal.so.3 =  /usr/lib/ure/bin/../lib/libuno_sal.so.3

 libstdc++.so.6 =  /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0x7f979ae42000)
   ...

The lines will go on and on for that program. Do they all resolve?
Any errors? If so then what are the reasons for those errors?

But why is it looking for libstlport_gcc? It isn't one of the
libraries used by that program.

   $ ldd -d -r /usr/lib/ure/bin/javaldx | grep libstlport_gcc
   ...nothing...

I can only guess that your restore was not completely successful.

Sorry about the mis-routing of the first message.

The restore problem is a long story. Lets just say that what i've
got is all I'm going to get.

Things have changed since I started this thread. I found a really good
missive at:

that got me through the problem. The only package that couldn't be fixed
was openoffice.org-filter-binfilter. This package is not essential. I
purged this one and now have a clean system. I do have a major problem
with KDE desktop icons now but that needs further investigation an maybe
a topic for another thread.

Thanks for the help

Uh, what? I would not call that luck, I would call that I paid big
money for real server-class equipment. I have never seen a post board
come with consumer-class equipment.Maybe nowadays the really high-end
enthusiast space has such things?

Anyway, why do you need one? If the POST is coming up with anything it
will beep a post code. Sure, it is more annoying to decipher than
looking at a display, but you don't have to buy anything... And anyway
it sounds like this MB never gets to post.

Well my board is an Intel DP55KG that I paid about $180 for. Not cheap
but not that expensive. There is a big difference between beep codes
and numeric readouts. The numerics can give very detailed information
as to the source of the problem. I will be willing to bet that the board
got through some of the post steps even though nothing noticeable
happened. Of course all of this is somewhat academic if his board
doesn't have a built in post card. It's cheaper to just buy another
motherboard.

KDE kickoff launcher problem

2012-12-11 Thread Gary Roach

Hi again (still?):

Debian Squeeze system.

After hammering down all of the problems caused by my abortive restore
operation, I am left with problems with the KDE Kickoff launcher. Some
of my software packages work fine with either the kickoff launcher or
with desktop icons. Others won't work with either. I have tried
reinstalling the programs and reinstalling KDE. Neither helped. Some of
the major programs like Openoffice and Iceweasel will not work at all. I
have run out of things to try. I don't understand KDE under the hood
well enough to solve this one. All help will be sincerely appreciated.

And of course you can always re-install anything you want too.

It seems to me that you must have tried to backup restore the system
part of your system. I am not opposing that in principal but in
practice I don't usually try to do it that way. For next time let me
suggest an alternative way to recover.

Instead I try to make sure I backup all of the locally created data
(such as /home and /usr/local) and all of the local configuration
(such as /etc and /var/backups) and then when I restore I actually
install a new image from scratch. Then onto the new image I restore
the data (/home) and then move to the more difficult part of restoring
the system installed components. I will merge in the accounts from
the old /etc/passwd and group files and then re-install all of the
packages that were installed previously. Record of those is kept in
/var/backups and I have written about how to get the list of
installed packages from there before. Install the list. Restore the
previous configuration from the old /etc. Restart and eventually
reboot to the restored system. It isn't trivial but it isn't too
difficult either. It works.

I do have a major problem with KDE desktop icons now but that needs
further investigation an maybe a topic for another thread.

If it is a failed restore issue then what I would try to do is to
determine what package includes those icons, purge that package,
re-install that package. Or perhaps hit it with a larger club by
purging all of kde, verifying that everything related has been
removed, and then re-installing all of kde. If something didn't
restore correctly then giving that package a fresh install should make
it good again.

Good luck!

Bob

Thanks Bob

You just answered my next question. I'm going to give your suggestions a
lot of thought as soon as I get the last of the bugs out. I did try
removal and re installation and it didn't help. I'm not sure that I did
a good job of stripping out all of the old data though. I' m going to
try again. Backuppc is a bit picky about sym-links. I think that this is
at the route of most of my problems. Rsync needs to have a -D switch set
before it will transmit them properly. Of course I didn't find this out
until after I got in trouble.

Combining Icedove data

2013-01-05 Thread Gary Roach

Hi all;

I am trying to combine the information from my laptop version of Icedove
into the icedove copy on my home PC. I have the import / export addon
installed on the PC copy. Both files presently reside at
/etc/.icedove/x.default on the PC. I am presently using Debian
Wheezy and Icedove 10,0,11.

The e7...default directory is presently being used by icedove. I
wish to fold in the data from the 7m.default directory that was
originally on the laptop. I can follow the process from Tools -
Import/Export Tools - Import Mbox File but what to do next alludes me.
I don't have a file, I have a directory that contains a ton of information.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

Inside Icedove, I keep my e-mail messages in local folders named after
my username and year (for backup and archiving purposes):

dpchrist-2011
dpchrist-2012
dpchrist-2013
etc.

Using a file manager or shell and looking around under ~/.icedove, I
see one folder and two files with matching basenames:

$ ls -d .icedove/yopoi36c.default/Mail/Local\ Folders/dpchrist*
.icedove/yopoi36c.default/Mail/Local Folders/dpchrist-2013
.icedove/yopoi36c.default/Mail/Local Folders/dpchrist-2013.msf
.icedove/yopoi36c.default/Mail/Local Folders/dpchrist-2013.sbd
snip

In this case, yopoi36c.default is my active Icedove profile directory.

I've found that if I simply copy those folders and files to another
machine and start Icedove, the corresponding Icedove folders will
automagically appear, Icedove will index the contents, and everything
works.

Thankfully, the Icedove developers understand and do a good job with
data forward/ backward compatibility/ migration. :-)

Hi David

Unfortunately, I have two of the .default directories that need to be
combined into one. I thought that the Import/Export tools would do this
but the instructions I can find have me thoroughly confused. A web
search turned up all kinds of methods to sync various packages but not
this case. I can't believe that there is not a straight forward way to
do this since the problem will arise any time one takes a laptop on the
road.

David

I didn't try copy and paste because there must be a ton of files, sub
directories and the sub-sub directories none of them easily readable.
To accurately cut an paste would be a nightmare. As an example, the
following files and directories are under the .icedove/e7yi94cf.default
directory:

abook-1.mabdownloads.sqlite
mailViews.datsecmod.db
abook.mab *extensions* mimeTypes.rdf
session.json
addons.sqliteextensions.ini
panacea.dat signons.sqlite

persdict.dat training.dat
cert8.dbfolderTree.json
places.sqlite traits.dat
chromeappsstore.sqlite global-messages-db.sqlite
places.sqlite-shm urlclassifier3.sqlite
compatibility.ini history.mab
places.sqlite-wal urlclassifier.pset
compreg.dat key3.db
pluginreg.dat virtualFolders.dat
content-prefs.sqlitelocalstore.rdf
prefs.js webappsstore.sqlite
cookies.sqlite lock
search.json xpti.dat

directoryTree.json *Mail* search.sqlite

The directories are in bold face. Under the Mail directory are the
following directories:

*incoming.verizon-1.net
incoming.verizon.net
Local Folders
smart mailboxes*

Under the incoming.verizon-1.net directory (as an example) are the
following files:

Drafts filterlog.html Inbox.msf
popstate.dat Sent.msf Trash.msf
Drafts.msf Inbox msgFilterRules.dat Sent
Trash

I need some kind of a tool to merge the messages and it needs to be
programmed by someone that knows a lot more about the innards if Icedove
than I do. I would assume that the Import / Export tools should do this
but it is not intuitively obvious how to use them. If someone knows how
to use the Import tools I could really use their help.

Grub infinite loop problem on dual boot system

2013-01-28 Thread Gary Roach

Hi all;

I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop that has 2 60 GB drives. I formatted one
with the Windows XP that is needed to run all of the bells and whistles
that the Qosmio provides. I installed Debian Squeeze on the other drive
and used Grub as the boot loader. This setup worked fine. I recently
upgraded to Debian Wheezy using the latest iso net install disk. Since
then the system boots to the Grub operating system selection screen. If
I select Debian, the computer starts, loads grub, shuts down and
restarts over and over again. I managed to get back into the Windows XP
side by completely reloading the XP OS from the factory disks. As long
as I select the XP system things work fine. As soon as I try the Debian
system the looping starts again. I tried to reload the Debian side from
the iso disk but the end results are the same. Any suggestions will be
sincerely appreciated.

I recently upgraded to Debian Wheezy using the latest iso net install
disk. Since then the system boots to the Grub operating system
selection screen. If I select Debian, the computer starts, loads
grub, shuts down and restarts over and over again. I managed to get
back into the Windows XP side by completely reloading the XP OS from
the factory disks. As long as I select the XP system things work
fine. As soon as I try the Debian system the looping starts again. I
tried to reload the Debian side from the iso disk but the end results
are the same. Any suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

No sample programs are included. Anyone know whats wrong. There should

I have done a locate on dxsamples and this directory is the only one

Bug reporting

2012-02-01 Thread Gary Roach
I've been using Debian for years and still can't seem to submit a bug
report successfully. One of the main problems is that I have no mail
server active on my system. I use Icedove. I have tried to setup exim
several times and have always given up in disgust. The instructions for
reporting by normal email are way to complicated for easy understanding.
The examples given include copies of the world. I need something
straight forward and relatively simple. Any help will be sincerely

Backup System part deux

2012-02-09 Thread Gary Roach

Thanks for all of the help last time . I installed Backupninja easily.
After getting it running I realized that it didn't quite do what I
wanted. I was looking for a package that could be installed in the
server with little need for additional programs to be installed on each
machine. So, after some searching, I switched to Backuppc. Now Backuppc
will do what I want but it needs to run first. To cut to the chase I
have (I think) the config.pl file set to backup /home, /etc, and /var
with a couple of exclusions. As the debian readme file suggested, I
pasted the supplied script into the Apache2 config file. This seems to
be working OK. I then moved the /var/lib/backuppc files to my spare hard
drive '/backupdisk' and did a soft link from /var/lib to
/backupdisk/backuppc. I then did the following

root/.../etc# service backuppc start
Starting backuppc...2012-02-09 17:17:05 Can't create a test hardlink
between a file in /backupdisk/pc and /backupdisk/cpool. Either these
are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support
hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions
problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i,
and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting...

I searched for an answer and found dozens, all different and mostly
old. The either made no sense or didn't work. Specifically- all of my
disks on all of my machines are ext3 file systems. Changing the
permissions to 755 on all of the files didn't work.

The path's involved look like:
/var/lib/backuppc - /backupdisk/backuppc
/backupdisk/backuppc/ cpool, pc etc.

I am running Debian Squeeze on all systems
I am using rsync and have ssh installed on all systems.
All of the systems communicate with each other over ssh
My backup server is running two GB size disks. Backuppc is running on
one disk and using the other for the backup data.

Any ideas of how to fix this problem will be sincerely appreciated.

Gary R

PS: For the average user the documentation for this package sucks. The
detail included may be exactly what the developer needs but is really
rough sledding for the average user. This seems to be a very common
problem in the Linux world and is the main reason that Linux is still
relegated to the number three spot way behind Windows and Mackintosh. I
spent 40 year in industry and was a tech writer for many of those years.
My last 5 years was as a developer of medium size database systems for
use by real dummies. So I speak with some authority. Every program that
is for general use must have one of two things. Either a GUI that can be
used without any special training by your wife/girlfriend/secretary
without asking _any_ questions or documentation that passes the same
test. This is the criteria that I always used and it works. I would love
to rewrite some of this stuff but am not nearly conversant enough with
the nitty gritty programming details.

Font intensity on desktop

2012-03-05 Thread Gary Roach

Hi

I have two systems running Debian Squeeze and have essentially the same
setup. I am running an ATI Radeon HD 5450 on my main system which has
good readable print on both the desktop icons and on the bottom panel.
My other system (older) is running an ATI Radeon RV250 and has lousy
readability for everything on the desktop. I have gone through the
system setup and made sure that both systems are identical. I'm running
1280x1024 at 60Hz refresh rate on both systems. I use the KDE desktop.
The newer system is running an Intel board with an i5-750 4 processor
CPU. The older system is running an Pentium III (Coppermine). Strangely
enough the print on the monitor (Bash) is good on both systems but the
window surround is nearly unreadable on the old system.

Any ideas as to how this problem can be corrected will be sincerely
appreciated.

vsftp problems

2012-03-13 Thread Gary Roach

Hi

Setting up vsftp should be a snap. Just follow the howto. Right. With
listen=YES in the .conf file and try to ftp the server from another
system on my network, I get:

On the server:
root@x2:/etc# service vsftpd start
Started FTP server: vsftpd

Note: ps xaf doesn't show vsftpd to be running

On the client

root@xx1:/etc# ftp xx2
Connected to xx2.home.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection
ftp

with listen=NO an attempt to restart on the server resulted in the
following:

root@/x2: /etc# service vsftpd restart
Stopping FTP server: No /usr/bin/vsftpd found running. None killed.
vsftpd.
/etc/vsftpd.conf: listen disabled - service will not start.

In short neither inet.d start or standalone start seems to work. *The
.conf file is right out of the documentation. *

These are both Debian Squeeze systems that are up to date.

Help will be sincerely appreciated.

Are you attempting to start it by hand as root?

If so, can you try lsof -ni:21? It looks like something else
has bound to your port 21.

Good suggestion, On both bad systems, I get

COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
inetd 1946 root8u IPv4 130958 0t0 TCP *:ftp (LISTEN)

The good machine shows that vsftpd is attached to the port.

I'm not sure how to correct this but it is definitely a step in the

Setting Local_enabled=YES will allow you to log in.
The configuration above allows only anonymous retrieval.
It won't allow you to log in or to put a file.

One of the machines starts fine with 'service vsftpd start' .

That's the machine running ftp as a standalone daemon.

The other two don't.

They are running the daemon via inetd. The daemon process will
exist only briefly when demanded.

When I try to start with /usr/sbin/vsftpd, the good machine hangs up.
The other two come back with:

500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket

The conventional way to start the standalone daemon is
/etc/init.d/vsftpd start; but as you found, this won't
work when the port is already allocated for ftp usage via inetd.

I've checked all the file permissions and everything else I can think of
and have found nothing different between the systems. Two of the systems
are exact down to the hardware.

Yes, everything is working just as it should.

ftp

That is because the default configuration is Local_enabled=NO.
Login is not allowed. The terminology is poor and Login_enabled
would seem better to me. In any case, Local_enabled means that
the ftp daemon should refer to the local /etc/passwd for
authentication. This what you want.

I am about to throw in the towel on this unless someone can come up with
an answer. Very frunstrated.

There are at least two options. ;)

1) Stop inetd all together if you don't run any services through
inetd (or xinetd).

To what purpose? There is no harm in letting inetd run vsftpd.

2) Or just edit /etc/inetd.conf (or a file in /etc/xinet.d/ if you
run xinetd) to let it not listen on port 21.

If standalone ftp is preferred. For most small scale usage,
ftp under inetd will be more efficient. The system has other
work besides standing by for an FTP connection.

Regards,... Peter E.

OK here is the latest. I have listen=YES on all machines. I have
Local_enabled=YES on all machines. I read the wiki on inetd. I also
turned off the ftp listen in inetd.conf. According to the wiki I should
now be able to start vsftpd by typing in /usr/sbin/vsftpd. This hangs up
on machine 1 and doesn't start the process. I get a 500 OOPS: could
not bind listening IPv4 socket error on machines 2 and 3. Using service
vsftpd start on all of the machines starts a standalone process on
machine 1 but nothing on the other two. I can ftp to machine 1 and log
in successfully from machines 2 and 3 but get 421 Server not available
--- errors from machines 2 and 3 when login is attempted. I have
checked the inetd.conf and vsftpd.conf files on each machine and they
are identical.

Re: vsftp problems (SOLVED)

2012-03-19 Thread Gary Roach
Well, isn't this embarrassing. Nowhere does it say that you may have to
reboot your systems after installation of vsftpd. When I found that a
script for vsftpd had been installed in the rc*.d files I decided to see
what would happen if I rebooted the system. This fixed the problems on
every one of the machines. All are running in inet,d mode - I don't care
what the documentation says about my setup being standalone. I think
that there needs to be some documentation changes but I am not sure
what. A rewrite of the vsftpd.conf files explanations would be a big help.

I thank you all for your help and patience.

You can try to:

1/ Add a new smtp outgoing account with the new password.

2/ Edit the current settings for the account that handles the old
password to force a password reset.

Greetings,

Thank you all for your help. The suggestion I liked best was to use the
addon editor. Alas it doesn't want to work with my 3.0.11 (Squeeze)
version of Icedove. So, to sum up for posterity:

Edit - Preferences - Security - Passwords - Saved Passwords
Then select the smtp account and hit remove.
Then;
Edit - Account Settings
Select the account in question.
Where it says Outgoing Server, from the drop down' select the one
*not* marked as default. ( I'm not sure why this is needed but things
didn't work with the default set.)

Select Server Settings for the account in question.
Turn *OFF* Use secure authentication. (Here again I don't know why this
is needed but didn't work with it on.)

Now download your email and assign the new password when asked.

I hope this helps someone else.

ATA/IDE hard drive problem

2012-04-07 Thread Gary Roach
I have an older computer that is still completely serviceable that I am
switching over to Linux from win2k. The system has had a glitch for a
long time in that it fails to boot the first time I try. The reason is
that it can't find the WD600BB, 60 GB hard drive. A second try usually
fixed the problem. It has an Intel D865PERL mother board, a P4 2.4 GHZ
processor and 512 MB DDR 400 ram. I just upgraded the BIOS to the latest
version.

If the BOIS ATA/IDE Configuration is set to Extended, the bios finds my
CDROM drive but not the hard drive. If the configuration is set to
Legacy the bios finds the hard drive but not my CDROM drive. The hard
drive is on IDE -1 as master (or stand alone, makes no difference) and
the CDROM is on IDE-2 as master. Swapping cables didn't help. The two
units are mounted too far apart to make one master and the other slave
on the same IDE port.

I've run out of ideas. Anyone else have any?

Yes - but lets see how your drive is setup first.

Please post the output of:-

or if you don't have parted installed:-

There seems to be some confusion here. I still have win2k on the
machine. Linux commands won't work. I think what I am going to do is
change the ATA/IDE Configuration to Enhanced, put the linux installation
disk in the CDROM drive and hope that it boots. One of the respondents
pointed out that Linux doesn't depend on the bios settings to find the
boot drive. I hope that is true. I may end up with a boat anchor.

Gary R.

Mmm, is the CD-ROM unit still visible/accessible within the OS? If
not, you can try to connect it to port IDE1 (same as the hard disk) as
slave, that could make a difference (buy a longer IDE cable if the
devices are separated enough) or extract the optical unit and use it
with an external USB case.

Greetings,

Yes, the cd unit is visible within the OS. Everything is working fine. I
installed an additional drive on the same IDE port as a slave. With
ATA/IDE Configure set to Legacy the bios recognizes both drives but not
the CDROM. Just as before. Once booted, everything works fine.

should make such a difference but it does. The package now works as it
should. The main index shows in the normal window and the individual
messages show in the bottom window as attachments. Before the email
looked like attachments to attachments.

Cups - software cant find

2006-12-30 Thread Gary Roach

Hi

I have a 3 computer, plus linksys switch, home network. Two of the
computers run Win2K and one uses Debian Linux. One of the Win2K systems
is acting as my print server. I use Samba on the Debian box to tie
everything together. The network works fine. The CUPS installation on
the Debian box prints test pages to the Win2k based HP 940C fine. Not
one single piece of software on the Debian box can find CUPS.

http://localhost:631 works fine.
Gimp cant find CUPS
Openoffice cant find CUPS
Iceape web browser cant find CUPS
Gnome CUPS Manager cant find CUPS

Some of these comeback with an error message and some just print to
never never land.

I've found a confusing assortment of answers on the web for other
versions of Linux, none of which seem to apply to my problem, but no fix.

Any one got an idea

Thanks for the reply.

Good question. I did a locate on cupsys-dsd. The return showed the
package dpkg files an archive entry and the usual doc entry but no
indication that the program, it self, was installed. Shouldnt there be
something in the /etc or /etc/rcX files. I did an apt-get reinstall but
it didn't change anything. Where should the actual program reside? I
don't think it is installing. Any guesses as to why?

Transfering iceweasel bookmark files to new system

I am replacing my oldest 1GHZ box with a new 2.65 x 4 GHz box. Both are

Intel P55 chip set sound missing

2010-07-22 Thread Gary Roach
Another installation problem for my new DP55KG motherboard with an
i5-750 4 core cpu. No Sound!.

The chipset is the P55 set and supports AC-97 and HDA protocols. I
used the latest Debian Squeeze Network Installation Disk. Neither the
onboard jacks or the front panel jacks work. I've checked the system
tray audio setting and the intel HDA mixer settings and the generic
settings. Everything seems to be OK. Anyone have a clue as to why the
sound doesn't work.

This is one of two problems with my Linux installation on this
motherboard. The onboard 82578DC Lan chipset doesn't work either. I
solved this one by adding an above board NIC.

KDE Desktop Themes

2010-07-26 Thread Gary Roach
I have 2 identical Debian Linux setups, one on an old system and the
other on a brand new system. The desktop themes for the new system are
listed as:

Air
Aya

Elegance

Oxygen
Silicon
Slim Glow
The old system only lists:
Air
Air for notebooks
Oxygen.

I have tried every way I know to correct this difference (I like
Elegance) to no avail. Any suggestions as to why some of the themes
might be missing. All of the files seem to be the same version on both

Software to handle bits and pieces of information.

2010-08-04 Thread Gary Roach

Hi;
I could use some suggestions. I seem to collect a lot of snippets of
information scribbled on pieces of paper, old napkins, etc. Examples are
notes on harware, sources for stuff, notes on possible projects, book
that I might want to buy in the future and on and on. This has generated
numerous scraps of paper and sticky notes with the result that chaos
reigns. I recently tried knotes which helped a lot but didn't cover
tasks. I have now switched to Kontact. This takes care of scheduling
things, projects and short term notes. I still am not sure what to do
about those notes that could be around for a long time like maybe a
note on the proton boron fusion reaction energy . I may never use it
but would like to be able to find the information if need be. I guess I
need a repository for disparate information (how's that for fuzzy). I
hope this makes some sense.

Any suggestions.

Re: Software to handle bits and pieces of information.

2010-08-05 Thread Gary Roach
Thanks for all of the responses. I thought that since they were so wide
ranging that a condensed list might be helpful to others. Obviously I'm
not the only one with the problem. In no particular order:
Run own (private, locked-down) Mediawiki installation - this
allows access where ever you are.

Kjots but prefers the zim program (personal wiki). Zim
outstanding especially in conjuction with iceowl. (2 hits)

Kontact good choice but needs tool to search inside all that
information. Unsure what tools available in KDE4. Akonadi+strigi+nepomuk
might do the job.

Tomboy used for this very purpose.

Use text files in a directory system with discriptive names.
Use a script program to search for hard to find stuff.

Gnote for keeping notes and Orage for scheduling tasks/events.

Email notes to self. You can search the email files.

Again thanks everyone. Seems I have a little research to do here.

Hi:

Thanks for the replies. First hdb/ is an extra drive that is being used

same as /home/gary. Second Camaleon's ? comments about samba have made
me re-evaluate my approach to the network transparancy problem. I have
taken a second look at Dolphin. It seems to have characteristics that
will handle most of the things that I wish to accomplish. I need a
little more tinker time to be sure. If I can figure out how to run
applications using remote files, I think I will have all that I need.

Cups+gutenprint color balance shot.

2010-08-21 Thread Gary Roach

Hi;

I have been doing all of my color printing on my Win2K system directly
attached to an Epson stylus photo RX680 printer. All is well. I just
installed a new computer on my office network that runs on linux. I am
using Samba and Cups+gutenprint v5.2.5 with the Win2K/Epson printer as
my network printer. For text printing everything works fine. I decided
to shift my color work to the new computer (at least 10x faster than any
other computer on the net) and was shocked when I printed a NFTA label
(those diamond shaped labels you see on hazardous material containers)
when the red came out peach and the blue came out purple. The same file
printed on the Win2K system is fine. All linux systems are running the
latest Squeeze software and kernel 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10
06:32:16 UTC 2010.

Testing shows that switching between CYMK and RGB makes no difference.
Pure magenta, yellow and cyan print correctly. The ligh colors red,
yellow and blue print correctly but none of the other colors on the
color selector are correct. I don't think tweeking color balance is
going to help this problem. There is too great an error.

Thanks for any help you may offer.

Mailing list protocol

2010-08-25 Thread Gary Roach

Hi;
This is kind of an embarrassing question considering I have been
subscribed to this list for several years. What is the protocol for a
reply. Though I have bumbled through the process in the past, I am not
sure how it should really be done. I searched for about a half hour on
google and on the debian site and still have questions. Specifically:

If I reply to debian-user@lists.debian.org , how does my reply get
included with the correct snippets of other messages. Or is this my
responsibility to cut and paste relevent sections.

Though in danger on creating an email food fight, I still need to know
whether my reply goes on the top or bottom of the text.

I seem to be cleaning up a lot of computer loose ends recently. This is
one of them.

Thanks

try apt-get install mysql-client and/or mysql-server. These are wrappers
that will install the latest versions. Check the Debian Packages page on
their web site. I don't see mysql-core-5.5 listed.

Kate plugins

2013-08-22 Thread Gary Roach

Hi all,

I need to install Python and Django plugins for Kate. I downloaded a
file from the KDE git repository. It installed a directory tree of files
in my home directory. I transfered the directory tree (Kate-plugins) to
usr/share/apps as suggested in the documentation. The plugin list in Kate
has not changed from its default values.I'm using Debian Wheezy.

Can anyone help.

Confused

Two people had succeeded by purging everything Alsa related and installing

Alsa from upstream, though one of them had to run snddevices after every

Any suggestions, please? Ought I to purge and install from upstream? In

general, I prefer to stick to Debian versions.

Thanks for any help,

I ran into an alsa issue awhile back and solved it by altering the conf file.
May or may not be of any help. I wrote it up here

http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=9t=409

I hope I am not hyjacking this thread but, while my problem seems to be
somewhat different, it still started with a wheezy upgrade that killed
my sound system. I don't think that any one has identified the root
cause of this problem and are kind of using a shot gun approach to the
problem solving. So let me get as specific as I can. Running as root
'service alsa-utils restart' produced the following return:

root@mysystem:/etc# service alsa-utils restart
[ ok ] Shutting down ALSA...done.
[] Setting up ALSA...warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with
error message 'Home directory /root not ours.'...Home
directory /root not ours

Can anyone explain this error message and suggest a fix.

I hope my above statement doesn't insult anyone. I know a lot of effort
has gone into this thread. But my observation still stands. I'm finding
references to this problem all over google but no reasonable solutions.
I can't believe that there are more than one or two actual problems
here. Programs just don't usually break in multiple ways all at the same
time.

Hmm, that looks like some sort of permissions problem. For starters,
what does

ls -ld /var/lib/alsa
ls -ld /root

give you? Maybe someone else has a better idea on where to start
searching, or even exactly what the problem is.

Greg

In reply to your question:

   root@mysite:/var/lib# ls -ld /var/lib/alsa
   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 29 2012 /var/lib/alsa
   root@mysite:/var/lib# ls -ld /root
   drwx-- 15 gary gary 4096 Sep 3 18:21 /root

I use /root for a ebook editor and nothing else.

I do stand to be corrected, but I think that's the problem. I haven't
yet come across a system where /root was owned by some user other than
root. Try this:

chown root.root /root

and try starting alsa again.

Greg

You were correct. I'm not sure why root got marked gary:gary but that
stopped Alsa from being restarted. I still don't have sound so I'll be
back as soon a I can find something concrete wrong.

Thanks

Further investigation showed that pulseaudio wasn't running either.
Attempts to restart failed. From the Ubantu Forum (Temujin April 25,
2011) I reset the pulseaudio configuration with:

   dpkg --purge --force-depends pulseaudio
   sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

I then had to manually start pulseaudio with service pulseaudio start.
This worked but still no sound. I started VLC player and with tools
preferences audio pointed it to pulseaudio for its output device. I
started an arbitrary icecast and under Audio Visualizations picked the
VU meters. These showed that I was receiving a signal. I then started
the PulseAudio Volume Meter and found that I was also getting a signal
out of pulseaudio. I still don't have any sound.

Debian setup for python django development

2013-10-28 Thread Gary Roach

Hi all,

I have been trying to set up a python, django, mysql development project
and am really confused. All of the documentation seems to ignore the
apt-get installation methods used by
ebian and its derivatives. Does pip install the same as Aptitude ( I
don't think so). If I use virtualenvwrapper, how does this fit with the
normal debian (wheezy) installation. I also need git which just confuses
the situation even more. The documentation centers on Windoz and Mac and
ignores the automation of the Debian installation.

If this is off topic please point me in the right direction.

Any help with straightening out my brain in this areal will be sincerely
appreciated.
