Avocent 100 KVM switch problems
I just purchased an Avocent Switchview 100-4 KVM+Audio switch. I have 2 Debian systems and 1 Windows 2000 system. Everything works fine except that the scroll lock key will not switch channels when connected to a Debian system but works fine when connected to the Windows system. Further, the NumLock light is reversed with the Debian systems and works correctly with the Windows system. Why the operating system should effect the switches operation is beyond my ken. I talked to the factory and they don't understand it either. I am using a Microsoft 4000, USB, Ergonomic keyboard and Microsoft USB laser mouse. Normally I wouldn't bother but the switch is buried under the computer table and is hard to control manually. Has anyone else had this problem and know of a fix. The SkrLk + SkrLk + End that is suggested on some of the web sites doesn't work. Gary R -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? You will have to unsusbscribe for one (normal) and then subscribe for the other (digest) but again, reconsider it... if you don't want to store messages in your hard disk you can use a newsreader and NNTP, no subscription nor local space needed. People using digests usually don't know how to reply using them and cause a lot of problems. Please don't be the source of problems. Using a digested mailing list is hard! You need special tools in order to burst the digest to read and reply to it. As Camaleón writes people that think they might want the digest form would be much better served by using the newsgroups. Or Gmane. Or other web archive reader. I use the mailing list interface. But to avoid the problems of a digest I will suggest Gmane as one of the less objectionable alternatives. Try this. Overview: http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.user Web page reader using frames and threads: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.user Bob While my MUA is able to handle replies to digest correctly, digest anyway caused that much trouble, that I canceled it and subscribed to the normal mailing list again. I am so very used to seeing threaded message discussions that not having those would drive me crazy. I quit the digest because it broke for me. This form takes a little longer to go through but not significantly so. Are you using a threaded mailer? I can only guess that you are not. In which case you should try it. It makes reading the mailing list quite a pleasant experience. And let me note that message threading is not what Gmail and MS call conversations based upon subject. That is yet a different way of sorting messages. One that is lacking in my not so humble opinion. I'm using icedove. It does a good job of underlining or dropping down threads that are active. Any older threads, for which I have special interest , I just tag with a color. I found the out of order dates that are created a bit confusing at first but am now used to it. Gary R. I hope that this is the correct way to reply. I don't want to clutter up Ralf's normal in box with debian messages. It looks okay to me. I see no fault with it. I notice that a few of the lists messages are showing up in mine. The filter doesn't catch them because they are directly from the sender instead of from debian lists. Are you talking about people who CC the original sender of the message in addition to the mailing list? That is against the mailing list code of conduct which specifically says not to CC the sender too. It is a perpetual problem regardless. When that happens you get a direct copy along with the mailing list copy. And the extra discussion concerning it on the mailing list saying Please don't CC me as I read the mailing list already. For me it means that I need to verify that I got the message by the mailing list too (which always comes later so I usually ignore it for a while first) and that it wasn't a reply only to me. So I can't just ignore them. I have to spend effort to determine what is going on with the message and where it came from and how it got to me. What a pain! And usually from people asking for help. My editorial remark is that if people want help then the easiest thing is to make it easy to be helped and they will get more of it and of a higher quality too. I have come to the conclusion that humans are intrinsically bad at communication. Apparently it isn't common sense. Apparently it does actually require the person to put some effort into learning how to interact with others. I wonder if we will ever master it? Na. Probably not. Xsane error with Workforce 645 printer
Hi everyone Our old epson printer just threw a rod so we replace it with a new Epson Workforce 645 printer. Nice printer. I am trying to get the scanner to work with Xsane and keep getting the error Failed to start scanner:Error during device I/O The printer is setup as a stand alone network printer with a wifi connection. I am trying to scan multiple documents (auto feeder) in color and using the PDF to PC setting. All my linux boxes find the printer and seem to do standard print operations correctly. I'm using Debian Squeeze on this particular system. When setting the printer front panel for scanning the last step shows USB connection on the readout. Could the wifi connection be the problem? I am a little miffed that Epson has chosen to drop support for Windows 2000 from its driver for this model. Anyone know how to get around that. workforce 645 printer can't find other network assets
Earlier I was complaining about Xsine not working with this new printer but the main problem seems to be that the printer doesn't see any of the computers on the hardwired network. I am running Squeeze, Wheezy and Win2K on various systems on the hardwired part of the LAN. I have Samba installed on my linux systems along with winbind. Smbd, nmbd and winbind are running. When I try to scan from the printer to a network computer the printers list of where to send the scans shows a usb connection ( it is wireless to my Actiontec M1424MR router) and nothing else. I have an XP laptop that I connected wirelessly to the network. The printer found this and listed It properly. The rest of the network systems find the XP as well. In summary: 1. The 3 Linux machines, using Smb4K, and the Win2K machine , using My Network Neighborhood, find all of the computers both hardwired and wireless, 2. All of the Linux systems and the XP system can print to the printer. 3. The XP wireless using my network neighborhood, finds none of the hardwired computers. 4. The printer, in scan mode, finds the XP machine and nothing else. 5. The printer scans correctly to the wireless XP machine. In Epson's infinite wisdom they do not supply a driver for Win2K and older systems any more. Because of this and their attitude when they hear Linux, I would not buy this printer under some circumstances. It's too bad because the printer seems to be a good unit. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. I suspect that the Samba setup is the problem but have no idea what to do to fix it. I use Swat with Samba. I also have Xsane installed. I still get Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O errors. My XP handles the scanner fine. I don't know where that deb file comes from but it looks for the printer not the scanner. Anyway, did you read the mentioned forum post? I read the posts. The deb file came directly from Epson. It was listed as the driver for the Workforce 645 printer. I assume that the scanner driver should be included. Maybe not? I am concentrating on the scanners inability to find the hardwired (LInux) computers because this is an obvious problem that must be fixed. This problem shows up when one tries to use the printers control panel to scan and then send the PDF files to a particular computer on the net. Again, this works with my wireless XP but none of the hardwired computers. I am assuming that it is a Samba setup problem. And I already gave you some hints (yes, also for this :-P): http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/09/msg00472.html Greetings, 1. I checked the router. The instructions say that the router is setup to allow wireless printing. In addition, my XP wireless works fine for print and scan. It also shows up on the scan control console. 2. I ran the network connection test from the scan console. I shows everything OK. 3. I will run the ethernet test asap. I am having severe back pain at present and really don't want to crawl around under the computer table. I'll see if I can't patch it from the top. I'lll be back with this. 4. All printing from all computers ( Win2k accepted) works fine. I haven’t checked the fax functions yet. The ink level indicator never seems to work but not worth fooling with. Re: [OT] Re: workforce 645 printer can't find other network assets
OK. Lets start over. Configuration: 1. Epson Workforce 645 All in one 2. Network mix of hardwired Win2K and linux computers and an XP wireless. All with fixed IP addresses. 3. 645 now hardwired to router. Fixed IP address set in router and 645. 4. Router - Actiontec M1424-WR plus Cisco extention switch (Lan to Lan connection). I have locked in most of the IP addresses for my usual hardware but still have the capability to use DHCP for new stuff. Software 1. XP loaded with Epson drivers and Epson Event Manager from CD supplied with 645. 2. Linux machines: 2.1 A mix of Debian Squeeze and Wheezy systems. 2.2 Samba and Cups installed (and configured?). 2.3 iscan_2.29.1-5-usb0.1.ltd1.7_i386.deb and iscan-dat_1.17.0-2_all.deb installed with dpkg. 2.4 Xsane, sane and gimp installed Performance: All computers with the exception of the Win2k print to the printer. All of the print functions seem to work. The exception being the ink level indicators that don't show on the Linux machines. Remote FAX not checked. I don't care. The copier works fine. The scan control from the XP works fine. Problems: 1.1. When attempting to scan a document from Linux, Xsane produces the error: Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. At this point, the document is run through the scanner but no scan is produced. 1.2. When Xsane is purged from the system and sane's scanadf or scanimage is used, I get the error: Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanners's status. This same error occurs if iscan is run through gimp. The scanners control panel reads: Communication Error. Check the printer connection and try again. 2.1 The 645 still can't see any of the Linux systems on the consoles readout when the Scan to PC mode is chosen. I can probably live with this but an office of any size would be seriously inconvenienced. I think this problem may be caused by Epson's Event Manager software. I found at least one instance on the net where someone was complaining about the quirky nature of this piece on drech. Editorial: The Event Manager seems to be designed to freeze Linux/Unix out of the market and to rid the user base of older Microsoft products. If I were a real suspicious person I would see Microsofts hand in this. Of course if that's true then Epson's management is a bunch of idiots. Microsofts own management says that they loose about 20% of sales to piracy, 10% to Linux and about 5% to Apple. That means that Epson is throwing away about 10% of their business in this Workforce line by poor support. Stupid. Request: Help me get Xsane or its equal to work . Any light shed on the console listing problem might be icing on the cake but would be appreciated. Epson provides a manual for the printer and a list of Linux FAQS, maybe you can find something of interest there: http://download.ebz.epson.net/man/linux/escp.html http://download.ebz.epson.net/faq/linux/ Sadly, Epson explicitely says that they do not support the linux software (sigh). At this point, the document is run through the scanner but no scan is produced. Does your Xsane version support this device? This same error occurs if iscan is run through gimp. The scanners control panel reads: Communication Error. Check the printer connection and try again. Run iscan from command line and as root user to discard a problem with the permissions. Also, as you have connected the AIO using an ethernet cable, the corresponding network plugin package may be needed so the device can be properly detected by your system. I had to download a linux driver from HP's web site but it was easy to find and easy to install. Two glitches. The paper feed won't work with Staples Photo paper. It works with Epson and HP paper fine. Doing the droop test over the edge of a table showed that the Saples paper is about twice as stiff as the others. There is a spring loaded deflector in the paper path that is supposed to deflect the paper upward as it comes out of the tray. The stiffer paper won't make the bend. Clobbered digest volumes (more info)
Looking closer at the problem, (see Clobbered digest volumes in Volume 2012 #1342) I find that I occasionally receive a correct message. The returns of my own are correct and some others. The bad messages all have the header information after the text and trigger the error message: Error: msgHdr.folder is null Source File: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js Line: 2696 The ones received correctly have the header / text in the correct order and don't generate the error. It appears that icedove can't find the header information if it is in the reverse order. Duh!!. So the question is why am I receiving messages with the order flipped??? I also note that the full (expanded) header is alway printed in both cases even though icedove header switch is set to normal. BackupPC restore problem
Hi all I sent a copy of this to the backuppc mailing list but response is a bit slow. So if someone has some experience with backuppc and can help, it will be sincerely appreciated. I got home from vacation, fired up the systems and one of the hard drives was trashed. Two days of recovery attempts didn't work so I reformatted and reinstalled the Debian Squeeze system. I re-established the rsyncd connection to the backup system and started a restore from the GUI. The next morning I found all of the proper directory structure installed but no data in the directories. I then tried to create a tar file. The file created held only the directory strucure. The data is all there in a full backup of the system. I can even open the files on the backup disk. Anyone know what could cause this problem. I found one other person that had this problem and solved it by switching off the proxy service in the browser. This didn't work for me. The instructions for creating a tar file at the command line are beyond my ken. It might work if you could get BackupPC_tarCreate to actually run, find the proper security setup for it and figure out where to put the tar file. I gave up. With Knoppix I could gain access to all of the other data but was unable to access /bin. I don't know why this happened and that worries me. I tested everything during reformatting and installation and found nothing wrong with the drive. I'm not too worried because I have a complete backup system. Of course I am having trouble with the restore. The data's all there on the backup disk but BackupPC only restored the directories and none of the data. SD card formatting problem

It is really frustrating when you know there is a command that you used 2 years ago that is exactly what you need but can't remember its name. The old CRT type monitors needed something to constantly change the image on the screen to keep the electron beam from burning a permanent pattern onto the CRT face. The new technologies don't have this problem but do have a wear and tear problem with the back lighting system. So turn off the lighting if you want to save your monitor. Restore problems with backuppc and apache
I have a Wheezy system setup with backuppc to back up 3 computers - all ext3/4 systems. I have been trying to restore to a cold iron system. Every time I try to create a restore.tar file the process stops at 331KB when the file should be about 21GB. The file contains the directories and no data. The files on the backup system have all of the data and look OK. Several other people with similar setups have tried the exact same commands (GUI) and have not had this problem. I started thinking that all of the GUI information runs through Apache2 so I turned logging up to debug on apache and made another attempt at creating a tar file. Lo and behold, I got the following error message in the Apache error log: [Date stuff] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Out of memory! referrer: http//backupsystem/backuppc/index.cgi I then opened a systems monitor program, re-ran things again and watched the system ram max out and then the swap file start filling up. When the swap file got to about 1.2GB the process quit. The swap file is set to 2 GB so I am not sure what is going on here. If the problem is with my Apache setup it might explain why no one else is having the problem. I looked at all of the other pertinent log files but found no other entries. Specifically, the syslog and kern.log did not show OOM kernel shutdown. Communicates between computers is being handled by rsyncd. Can this be a problem if the tar file is being created on the same computer where the backup data is stored. Any ideas? How much are you willing to pay. 5. Do you do graphics - need a lot of screen real-estate. I own a Qosmio G25-av315. It weighs about 9.5 lbs and gets about 1 hr on the batteries. It's more of a portable computer than a laptop. For this I get an 18 inch screen, all kinds of media capability, two 60GB hard drives and a raft of compatibility headaches. I set the system up as a dual boot with Debian Linux on one disk and Windows XP on the other. The Debian side has never been completely functional - but adaquate for my needs. The XP side is fully functional but is fast becoming a problem. There seems to be no upgrade path to Windows 8. This last problem is going to get worse the more complicated the laptop. This Qosmio has a TV receiver (never used) and dolby sound system. Trying to find linux drivers for some of this stuff means that firmware has to be swapped out in the fly. Not a good situation. My advise. By only what you absolutely need. Forget the bells and whistles unless you really have a specific need. Simple is cheaper and probably more useful. Unless you need this within the next 6-12 months you might consider waiting to see what happens with bigger ePaper screens. I want a tablet but won't buy until I find one with a ePaper screen. The battery life goes up by a factor of 10 or more and the screen is readable at very obtuse angles and in direct sun light. i hope this helps Gary R. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. For Kobo you only need to install their software, not Adobe, though Adobe works ok in Wine as well. Have you tried using Calibre? I did not need any Kindle software on my Debian computer to manage my Kindle. Calibre does it all for me. Kobo at least is pretty terrible for PDFs. Slow, badly sized text, no reflow...Fundamentally PDF is not a good format for ebooks. I don:t know if the experience is better on a Kindle or similar. Same on Kindle except when you format pdf for A6 pages. I had some success converting pdf's to mobi format - escpecially when it was created with latex with hyperref. I can use Send-to-Kindle to send a file to all of them. I find it surprising that people are recommending tablets and phones... IMHO phone are next to useless for any serious amount of book reading, they are just too small, and the tablets have the battery life issue. That is what is great about an ereader, you charge it like once a week tops. I charge my Kindle once about once in a month or month and a half. Regards Johann -- Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. (Psalm 63:3) The whole DRM issue is a bad joke. I heard that France outlawed them. If you load a copy of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and Calibre (both freeware) on to your system and properly set up the software, the DRM is automatically stripped off the document on download and Calibre reformats to any reader you want to use. The instructions are easy to find on the internet. I am not a believer in pirating but there is a limit as to how much screwing over the consumer in this country can tolerate before everyone doesn't care any more. I'm still tinkering around with the whole DRM issue and still have a lot to learn. I do know that DRM's are a pain in the posterior for the customer and do absolutely nothing for copy right protection. My latest fiasco was today when I tried to download a book from my local library. One book I couldn't get because the copy was already loaned out (Yes it was an eBook.) This is unbelievable. I downloaded the other book into my computer directly. That doesn't work. I had to load through ADE. This sent it directly to Calibre which I suspect stripped off all protection. I am supposed to have the book for a week at which point it is supposed to go poof. I'll be interested to see if this happens. I think that you can probably keep a copy of all of your books in Calibre, copy them to disk and tell the suppliers to go to hell. Oner last thing. In defense of Amazon and Barnes and Noble, most of this garbage is coming from the publishers. With the present business model, the publisher sells the book to the distributor who is required to sell be book at the price the publisher dictates. The seller gets 30% of the sale. The US and several European governments are suing several publishing groups (read monopolies) over this practice. I guess the publishers need the money to pay bloated salaries to their top executives and line the pockets of their stock holders. Too bad we don't have capitalism in this country. If you are lucky your board has a built in post card. If not, you will have to buy one. They are nice to have around for such things. In case you are not familiar with post cards they have a numeric readout that ratchets up through the motherboards post process. The final number displayed can be looked up in a table that will tell you where and probably why the process failed. I would advise researching the post process on the net. If yours is built in ( like my intel i5-750 board) then instructions will be in your board manual. Intermittant problems are a bitch. Then onto the new image I restore the data (/home) and then move to the more difficult part of restoring the system installed components. I will merge in the accounts from the old /etc/passwd and group files and then re-install all of the packages that were installed previously. Record of those is kept in /var/backups and I have written about how to get the list of installed packages from there before. Install the list. Restore the previous configuration from the old /etc. Restart and eventually reboot to the restored system. It isn't trivial but it isn't too difficult either. It works. I do have a major problem with KDE desktop icons now but that needs further investigation an maybe a topic for another thread. If it is a failed restore issue then what I would try to do is to determine what package includes those icons, purge that package, re-install that package. Or perhaps hit it with a larger club by purging all of kde, verifying that everything related has been removed, and then re-installing all of kde. If something didn't restore correctly then giving that package a fresh install should make it good again. Good luck! Bob Thanks Bob You just answered my next question. I'm going to give your suggestions a lot of thought as soon as I get the last of the bugs out. I did try removal and re installation and it didn't help. I'm not sure that I did a good job of stripping out all of the old data though. I' m going to try again. Backuppc is a bit picky about sym-links. I think that this is at the route of most of my problems. Rsync needs to have a -D switch set before it will transmit them properly. Of course I didn't find this out until after I got in trouble. Combining Icedove data
Hi all; I am trying to combine the information from my laptop version of Icedove into the icedove copy on my home PC. I have the import / export addon installed on the PC copy. Both files presently reside at /etc/.icedove/x.default on the PC. I am presently using Debian Wheezy and Icedove 10,0,11. The e7...default directory is presently being used by icedove. I wish to fold in the data from the 7m.default directory that was originally on the laptop. I can follow the process from Tools - Import/Export Tools - Import Mbox File but what to do next alludes me. I don't have a file, I have a directory that contains a ton of information. Backup System part deux
Thanks for all of the help last time . I installed Backupninja easily. After getting it running I realized that it didn't quite do what I wanted. I was looking for a package that could be installed in the server with little need for additional programs to be installed on each machine. So, after some searching, I switched to Backuppc. Now Backuppc will do what I want but it needs to run first. To cut to the chase I have (I think) the config.pl file set to backup /home, /etc, and /var with a couple of exclusions. As the debian readme file suggested, I pasted the supplied script into the Apache2 config file. This seems to be working OK. I then moved the /var/lib/backuppc files to my spare hard drive '/backupdisk' and did a soft link from /var/lib to /backupdisk/backuppc. I then did the following root/.../etc# service backuppc start Starting backuppc...2012-02-09 17:17:05 Can't create a test hardlink between a file in /backupdisk/pc and /backupdisk/cpool. Either these are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i, and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting... I searched for an answer and found dozens, all different and mostly old. The either made no sense or didn't work. Specifically- all of my disks on all of my machines are ext3 file systems. Changing the permissions to 755 on all of the files didn't work. The path's involved look like: /var/lib/backuppc - /backupdisk/backuppc /backupdisk/backuppc/ cpool, pc etc. I am running Debian Squeeze on all systems I am using rsync and have ssh installed on all systems. All of the systems communicate with each other over ssh My backup server is running two GB size disks. Backuppc is running on one disk and using the other for the backup data. Any ideas of how to fix this problem will be sincerely appreciated. Gary R PS: For the average user the documentation for this package sucks. The detail included may be exactly what the developer needs but is really rough sledding for the average user. This seems to be a very common problem in the Linux world and is the main reason that Linux is still relegated to the number three spot way behind Windows and Mackintosh. I spent 40 year in industry and was a tech writer for many of those years. My last 5 years was as a developer of medium size database systems for use by real dummies. So I speak with some authority. Every program that is for general use must have one of two things. Either a GUI that can be used without any special training by your wife/girlfriend/secretary without asking _any_ questions or documentation that passes the same test. This is the criteria that I always used and it works. I would love to rewrite some of this stuff but am not nearly conversant enough with the nitty gritty programming details.
Font intensity on desktop
Hi I have two systems running Debian Squeeze and have essentially the same setup. I am running an ATI Radeon HD 5450 on my main system which has good readable print on both the desktop icons and on the bottom panel. My other system (older) is running an ATI Radeon RV250 and has lousy readability for everything on the desktop. I have gone through the system setup and made sure that both systems are identical. I'm running 1280x1024 at 60Hz refresh rate on both systems. I use the KDE desktop. The newer system is running an Intel board with an i5-750 4 processor CPU. The older system is running an Pentium III (Coppermine). Strangely enough the print on the monitor (Bash) is good on both systems but the window surround is nearly unreadable on the old system. Well, isn't this embarrassing. Nowhere does it say that you may have to reboot your systems after installation of vsftpd. When I found that a script for vsftpd had been installed in the rc*.d files I decided to see what would happen if I rebooted the system. This fixed the problems on every one of the machines. ATA/IDE hard drive problem
I have an older computer that is still completely serviceable that I am switching over to Linux from win2k. The system has had a glitch for a long time in that it fails to boot the first time I try. The reason is that it can't find the WD600BB, 60 GB hard drive. A second try usually fixed the problem. It has an Intel D865PERL mother board, a P4 2.4 GHZ processor and 512 MB DDR 400 ram. I just upgraded the BIOS to the latest version. If the BOIS ATA/IDE Configuration is set to Extended, the bios finds my CDROM drive but not the hard drive. If the configuration is set to Legacy the bios finds the hard drive but not my CDROM drive. The hard drive is on IDE -1 as master (or stand alone, makes no difference) and the CDROM is on IDE-2 as master. Swapping cables didn't help. The two units are mounted too far apart to make one master and the other slave on the same IDE port. I've run out of ideas. Anyone else have any? If not, you can try to connect it to port IDE1 (same as the hard disk) as slave, that could make a difference (buy a longer IDE cable if the devices are separated enough) or extract the optical unit and use it with an external USB case. Greetings, Yes, the cd unit is visible within the OS. Everything is working fine. I installed an additional drive on the same IDE port as a slave. With ATA/IDE Configure set to Legacy the bios recognizes both drives but not the CDROM. Just as before. Once booted, everything works fine. Software to handle bits and pieces of information.
Hi; I could use some suggestions. I seem to collect a lot of snippets of information scribbled on pieces of paper, old napkins, etc. Examples are notes on harware, sources for stuff, notes on possible projects, book that I might want to buy in the future and on and on. This has generated numerous scraps of paper and sticky notes with the result that chaos reigns. I recently tried knotes which helped a lot but didn't cover tasks. I have now switched to Kontact. This takes care of scheduling things, projects and short term notes. I still am not sure what to do about those notes that could be around for a long time like maybe a note on the proton boron fusion reaction energy . I may never use it but would like to be able to find the information if need be. I guess I need a repository for disparate information (how's that for fuzzy). I hope this makes some sense. Re: Software to handle bits and pieces of information.
Thanks for all of the responses. I thought that since they were so wide ranging that a condensed list might be helpful to others. Obviously I'm not the only one with the problem. In no particular order: Run own (private, locked-down) Mediawiki installation - this allows access where ever you are. Kjots but prefers the zim program (personal wiki). Zim outstanding especially in conjuction with iceowl. (2 hits) Kontact good choice but needs tool to search inside all that information. Unsure what tools available in KDE4. Akonadi+strigi+nepomuk might do the job. Tomboy used for this very purpose. Use text files in a directory system with discriptive names. Use a script program to search for hard to find stuff. Gnote for keeping notes and Orage for scheduling tasks/events. Email notes to self. You can search the email files. Again thanks everyone. Seems I have a little research to do here. Cups+gutenprint color balance shot.
Hi; I have been doing all of my color printing on my Win2K system directly attached to an Epson stylus photo RX680 printer. All is well. I just installed a new computer on my office network that runs on linux. I am using Samba and Cups+gutenprint v5.2.5 with the Win2K/Epson printer as my network printer. For text printing everything works fine. I decided to shift my color work to the new computer (at least 10x faster than any other computer on the net) and was shocked when I printed a NFTA label (those diamond shaped labels you see on hazardous material containers) when the red came out peach and the blue came out purple. The same file printed on the Win2K system is fine. All linux systems are running the latest Squeeze software and kernel 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 06:32:16 UTC 2010. Testing shows that switching between CYMK and RGB makes no difference. Pure magenta, yellow and cyan print correctly. The ligh colors red, yellow and blue print correctly but none of the other colors on the color selector are correct. I don't think tweeking color balance is going to help this problem. Mailing list protocol
Hi; This is kind of an embarrassing question considering I have been subscribed to this list for several years. What is the protocol for a reply. Though I have bumbled through the process in the past, I am not sure how it should really be done. I searched for about a half hour on google and on the debian site and still have questions. Specifically: If I reply to debian-user@lists.debian.org , how does my reply get included with the correct snippets of other messages. Or is this my responsibility to cut and paste relevent sections. Though in danger on creating an email food fight, I still need to know whether my reply goes on the top or bottom of the text. I seem to be cleaning up a lot of computer loose ends recently. This is one of them. Thanks Gary R. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Kate plugins
Hi all, I need to install Python and Django plugins for Kate. I downloaded a file from the KDE git repository. It installed a directory tree of files in my home directory. I transfered the directory tree (Kate-plugins) to usr/share/apps as suggested in the documentation. The plugin list in Kate has not changed from its default values.I'm using Debian Wheezy. Can anyone help. Confused Gary R. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Hardly satisfactory, especially on my husband's box. Any suggestions, please? Ought I to purge and install from upstream? In general, I prefer to stick to Debian versions. Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org Archive: http://lists.debian.org/201309131458.27255.lisi.re...@gmail.com I ran into an alsa issue awhile back and solved it by altering the conf file. May or may not be of any help. I wrote it up here http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=9t=409 I hope I am not hyjacking this thread but, while my problem seems to be somewhat different, it still started with a wheezy upgrade that killed my sound system. I don't think that any one has identified the root cause of this problem and are kind of using a shot gun approach to the problem solving. So let me get as specific as I can. Running as root 'service alsa-utils restart' produced the following return: root@mysystem:/etc# service alsa-utils restart [ ok ] Shutting down ALSA...done. [] Setting up ALSA...warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with error message 'Home directory /root not ours.'...Home directory /root not ours Can anyone explain this error message and suggest a fix. I hope my above statement doesn't insult anyone. I know a lot of effort has gone into this thread. But my observation still stands. I'm finding references to this problem all over google but no reasonable solutions. I can't believe that there are more than one or two actual problems here. Programs just don't usually break in multiple ways all at the same time. Gary R

Hmm, that looks like some sort of permissions problem. For starters, what does ls -ld /var/lib/alsa ls -ld /root give you? Maybe someone else has a better idea on where to start searching, or even exactly what the problem is. Thanks Gary R Further investigation showed that pulseaudio wasn't running either. Attempts to restart failed. From the Ubantu Forum (Temujin April 25, 2011) I reset the pulseaudio configuration with: dpkg --purge --force-depends pulseaudio sudo apt-get install pulseaudio I then had to manually start pulseaudio with service pulseaudio start. This worked but still no sound. I started VLC player and with tools preferences audio pointed it to pulseaudio for its output device. I started an arbitrary icecast and under Audio Visualizations picked the VU meters. These showed that I was receiving a signal. I then started the PulseAudio Volume Meter and found that I was also getting a signal out of pulseaudio. I still don't have any sound. I'll be back Gary R.

Debian setup for python django development
Hi all, I have been trying to set up a python, django, mysql development project and am really confused. All of the documentation seems to ignore the apt-get installation methods used by ebian and its derivatives. Does pip install the same as Aptitude ( I don't think so). If I use virtualenvwrapper, how does this fit with the normal debian (wheezy) installation. I also need git which just confuses the situation even more. The documentation centers on Windoz and Mac and ignores the automation of the Debian installation. If this is off topic please point me in the right direction. Any help with straightening out my brain in this areal will be sincerely appreciated. Gary R. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
