well, just for everyone's future reference. Declude does indeed work with
Imail 2006. The issue you're having is an Imail issue not a Declude issue,
as once a message is in the spool, Declude is done with the files. We only
process Q and D files. Please see the followng link for an explanation of

 Recipients, a poor man's substitute for tarpitting.

 IMail server 8.x was used with the same setting but I saw no increase in
 broken connections.

 I have a nightly Scheduled Task that cleans out the broken connections;
 it's one of the 3rd party scripts that Declude shares on their website.

 P.s. on the other hand, it could mean that you have some other problem,
 such as the SMTP service is stopping and starting a lot and breaking
 connections, or some circumstance completely unrelated to the IMail 2006
 upgrade, like a flapping route or network connection!

 The common denominator with these messages seems to be that it is
 addressed to multiple recipients.  These recipients are sometimes of
 the same domain and other times of different domains.

 We are running the latest 4.xx release with Imail 8.xx, but this
 behavior isn't new to this release.  We've noticed it for the last few
 releases, although I'm not sure which release marked the start of it.

 Has anyone else been seeing this behavior or are we just lucky?

There is no way to disable the ZEROHOUR test at 
this time. There will be an option to do so in a future release of

Thanks Darin. I did install the KB917953 patch from June. I also installed 4
more Windows updates yesterday and that's about when the problem started. I
removed those patches today and did a reboot of my server. I'm still
experiencing the same issue with the webmail. Any more suggestions?

Thanks so much for your reply, Andy. I do get prompted with the NTFS logon
screen. I forgot to mention that. When i put in my user name and password,
it gives me the page can't be displayed and then i can't get back to where
it prompts me again..

How do i turn on auditing for object access and which folders do i have to
do this for?

Do you have auditing turned for object access and against your folders in
Windows Explorer? Then the security log might show if there is some
permission problem.

Now, I remember I didn't do anything special. I installed a new Win 2003 SP1
system, set up a new IIS site and then installed Imail.

Matt, i did what you said.. i now have anonomyus and basic auth checked. I'm
getting a little closer because now i get this error instead of a page
can't be displayed:

default in Windows) - MS gives you quite a run-around:

- Windows Explorer - go to the root directories of each disk, properties,
security, Advanced, Auditing, add the Everyone user and mark the failed
checkmarks for the complete list of accesses (I personally also audit
successful change permissions and take ownership). Apply this and let it
propagate to all subfolders.

- Local Security Policy - to to Local Policies, Audit Policies and turn
on all failures. (I personally also audit successful account management and
audit policy changes).

After doing this, any access rejection will appear in the security event
log. I don't know how anyone manages any server (or workstation) without
having that information at your finger tips.

able to figure it out. In IIS, the anonoymus logon was using a User account
and not an Admin account. I changed it and it worked, thank the Lord! I'm

a huge security log file depending upon the configuration of the security
log file.

Second, auditing can produce a lot of data, even if configured very

Actually, what I do for my servers and for client, is in the Default domain
policy (local security policy if no domain,) enable those auditing policies
that are appropriate (not all are needed for normal business) AND enable
both success and failure on object access. NOTE that auditing of object
access is the ONLY auditing that requires 2 steps. All other auditing takes
affect without further intervention.

Then, only when needed, (or if by company policy they want to track changes
to files in a particular folder such as say payroll data sheets) I go to the
folders properties that I want to audit and enable auditing again for what
is needed only. Once I am done auditing, I disable on that directory.

related to declude but rather the installer and it effected only Imail users

 end users.

 Anyone have any suggestions?  Reinstall?

Actually, filters are not processed in the order that they occur in the
$default$.junkmail file, so no, you do not need to add a SKIPIFWEIGHT
directive to your filters. The STOPALLTESTS directive in your BLACKFILTER
will accomplish what you need.

  I totally agree with Dan’s email.  Declude has been working great for us, so 
it’s money well spent.  On the other hand, our IMail SA just expired, which 
cost us close to $1000 a year and a half ago, and I was never satisfied to the 
point where I could upgrade.  So that amounted to worthless money spent.  I’m 
pretty comfortable when David says an update is available that it really is 
ready.  The support – esp. Linda – has been fantastic.

Todd, changing the DNS in the actual diags.txt file will do nothing. This is 
just a text file that is generated from information in the .cfg files. In order 
to change the DNS that declude uses, you must add the following line to your 
global.cfg. file...

DNS xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Change the x's to the IP of your DNS server. Once you do this, delete your 
current diags.txt, restart the decludeproc service and a new diags.txt will be 
generated and your new DNS server will show in the diags.txt and it will be 
used within Declude. 

Also, we suggest that you use the following DNS server with Declude 
208.67.220.220. This is an OpenDNS server and it is extremely reliable.

I moved my primary internal DNS server to a new location last night (seeing
up another site in the WAN), and had planned on using the other DNS servers.
However, since moving it my spam has been high. I changed the DNS to the
other server in the diags.txt, and the invURIBL.exe.config (for
invURIBL). That helped, but am still getting some more that I don't
normally get. I just realized that there was a setting in IMail Admin too,
so that just got changed.

Anything else that you can think of that I need to check/change?

Also, regarding the diags.txt and the invURIBL config files, is it possible
to set more than one DNS server?

Todd, you can uncomment the line in the global.cfg and change the 127.0.0.1 to 
208.67.220.220. Yes, my educated guess would be that your spam increase is 
directly related to the DNS server move. I suggest always using 208.67.220.220 
because you will never have to rely on your internal DNS for Declude to run 
it's RBL tests properly.

Thanks for that info.  Actually, the DNS line in my global.cfg is listed as 
#DNS  127.0.0.1, so it's commented out.  It's probably been this way for 
a long time so what would that suggest?  One other time when we saw an increase 
in spam, it had to do with the fact that my DNS server froze up.  A reboot of 
the DNS server all but fixed it.  So I assumed that this increase would also 
be related to DNS issues since I just moved my main DNS server.
 
Should I uncomment it and use the DNS address that you suggested?  My mail 
server will be moving to a new location soon as well, so I hate to set it all 
up to rely on an internal DNS server that won't be immediately available to it 
in the next week.

Sandy, we suggest that you use the one that we recommend because 95% of issues 
with declude are related to in-house DNS servers not working to do recursive 
lookups correctly causing problems for our customers. I'm sure Todd has the 
skills to support his own DNS server as well, but that has nothing to do with 
why we suggest to use ours. We have seen the problem with in-house DNS servers 
so many times that we thought it would be a good idea to provide a suggestion 
to our customers.

Sorry to be meddlesome, but recommending that a single, remote,
uncontrolled DNS server always be used for Declude's RBL lookups
kinda flies in the face of best practices. The very reason people run
their own recursive DNS servers is to increase performance, and in
2008, if you can't install and support one of the several
high-performance DNS servers out there (Simple DNS, PowerDNS, BIND, MS
DNS) for recursive use only, chances are you should be outsourcing
your anti-spam measures as well. From experience, I'm sure Todd has
the skills to support his own DNS, so it seems defeatist to suggest he
do otherwise after this migration period.

Kevin, in our experience, the two OpenDNS servers (208.67.220.220 and 
208.67.222.222) that we suggest be used with Declude, work wonderfully and the 
uptime is excellent. Like i said earlier, we here in support see a lot of 
problems from our customer's in-house DNS servers failing to do recursive 
lookups. Giving our customers the suggestion and the option to use the OpenDNS 
server(s) is exactly that, a suggestion and an option. You can use any DNS 
server that does recursive lookups. The problem is, most of the people we come 
across on a daily basis do not have recursive lookup option set up on their 
local DNS servers.

I would have to agree with sandy. I use Open DNS at home as an extra step to 
keep my kids off of unwanted web site, I also use other measures. Two week ago 
we had no DNS services for an hour from OpenDNS. This would definitely cause 
issues with a mail server. I would place a CACHIND DNS software on the local 
machine. We use BIND and do not have a single problem with it. It runs solid. 
We are on W2k SmarterMail.

recursion (presumably in MS DNS) and point them there? Or put together
a HOWTO for PowerDNS or BIND, both free? It is so ridiculously easy
that I shudder to imagine are people trying to make use of such a
techies' product as Declude (sorry, it is, I've been using it since
1.x) who can't handle this.

I will work on getting a few articles together next week. If you would like to 
contribute your extensive knowledge of DNS, shoot me an email at [EMAIL

Uptime should be 100% on DNS servers. It's 2008! This should not even
be a consideration. No matter how wonderfully they work, a
high-traffic mail server will _always_ be slowed down by using DNS

Well... anyone running a help desk for an otherwise stable
product/environment sees the majority of questions for stupid stuff
that is not your fault. Does that mean that corporate help desks,

should just tell users to share the same user account + password?
(Some do: bad ones.)

 Giving our customers the suggestion and the option to use the
 OpenDNS server(s) is exactly that, a suggestion and an option.

Actually, what you said was I suggest always using 208.67.220.220
because you will never have to rely on your internal DNS -- that is
not an idle option but a pretty firm prescription from the company.
Guess it depends on whether suggest beats always or vice versa.

 You can use any DNS server that does recursive lookups. The problem is,
 most of the people we come across on a daily basis do not have
 recursive lookup option set up on their local DNS servers.

All companies either have an internal recursive DNS server (maybe they
don't know its IP?) or already use their ISPs DNS or some other remote
DNS service like OpenDNS. Are you talking about people who have a DNS
server running on localhost, but not a recursive server, and have
deliberately set Declude to use this server instead of the fully
functioning one they must have in order to send mail? G-d help us if
these people are blithely switching to OpenDNS instead of taking their
DNS illiteracy seriously!

I would submit that you are both (a) doing your own product a
disservice by hampering its performance AND (b) doing your client a
disservice by treating their management like It's okay that your IT
person doesn't know how to configure/locate the simplest possible DNS
setup, he/she can still be a responsible mail admin. This may be a
good way to grab more Declude users who would otherwise outsource all
of their anti-spam, but it is unethical to suggest that anyone so
unqualified should be in charge of their company's anti-spam defenses.
Sorry if anyone's feelings are hurt by that. You may have lots of
other skills we mail people don't. But if you don't know DNS, you
don't know SMTP. And if you don't know SMTP, you don't know e-mail.

Why not just post/reprint some articles on your site about setting up
recursion (presumably in MS DNS) and point them there? Or put together
a HOWTO for PowerDNS or BIND, both free? It is so ridiculously easy
that I shudder to imagine are people trying to make use of such a
techies' product as Declude (sorry, it is, I've been using it since
1.x) who can't handle this.

 little understanding about the role DNS plays in having these tests
 work properly.

I wouldn't be surprised at all... and I wouldn't be surprised if, nnn
months after they magically switch to OpenDNS, they _still_ have very
little understanding of DNS and how to troubleshoot SMTP sending and
receiving problems. Because you've patched the problem, but you
haven't educated them one bit by telling them that DNS -- rather than
being the mail-critical, distributed, scaleable, high-performance,
learnable, fairly brilliant protocol that it is -- is something they
should get from a free provider over the WAN.

By the way, I completely support shops that outsource their
anti-spam/anti-virus + their mailboxes (and just about everything
else) using OpenDNS for web browsing, since otherwise they would have
to support their first reliable, recursive DNS server(s). But if you
are capable of supporting your own anti-abuse and mailbox servers,
_you are capable of supporting a recursive DNS server_. Or you lied
about the first part.

 I don't consider the questions that are asked by our customers as
 stupid stuff that is not our fault, especially the questions about
 how DNS plays an important role in our product.

But you know very well what I mean by stupid stuff These are the
issues you have to deal with that cause collateral damage to the
reputation of your product or service, even though you have no direct
control over the problem area. In my password example, people with bad
memories or unstuck post-it notes are not your fault. But you don't
yell at them, and you don't tell them to rely on somebody else's
account. You do the smart thing and reset their password. Likewise for
people that can't open their corporate e-mail account because they
forgot to plug in their LAN cable when they came back from a trip. You
don't hang up on them, and you don't tell to go down to the local
coffee shop and use their GMail account. You tell them how to deal
with the problem, not how to avoid it.

 When a customer comes to me in a panic about their mail backing up
 and causing delays, they are quite happy when we diagnose, fix and
 educate them about the issue, DNS related or otherwise. I do not see
 that as bad service. We provide some of the best support
 available. If you would like to see the thank you letters and cards
 that i receive each year, i will gladly show them to you.

I'm not debating whether people are pleased with your service. I am
sure they are pleased as punch to have avoided learning something new
and nonetheless brought their mailserver back to life (albeit at lower
performance). That does not change the fact that by suggesting that
the right thing to do for DNS is use a free service, you are
pretending that DNS is not a necessary skill area for a mail

Steps - Tested with Bind 9.5.0-P2 Windows XP/2003/2008 Binary Kit
1)  Download BIND
http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/index.php
2)  Install Bind
a.   Unzip and run BINDInstall.exe
b.  Give the service account a strong password
c.   Do not start bind service after install
3)  Configure Bind
a.   Go to c:\windows\system32\dns and give the service account named 
read\write permissions to the etc folder
b.  Place the attached files into the etc folder.
c.   Open a command propmt
   i.  CD to 
c:\windows\system32\dns\bin
 ii.  Run 
rndc-confgen -a
d.  Change the first line of the named.conf file to your IP range that 
needs recursive DNS. I would use the ip address of the mail server and 
12.0.0.1. change the 169.14.238.0/24 to the IP of your mail server.
acl dmz { 169.14.238.0/24; 127.0.0.1; };
4)  Start bind and make some queries
 
 
This process takes less than 5 minutes. You now have a reliable easily 
upgradeable recursive DNS dedicated to your mail server.

Sandy, i agree on the importance of having a well-designed DNS server in a 
network infrastructure. You and I are both intelligent and experienced enough 
to realize that although both of us feel this way, it does not mean that people 
want to take the time to educate themselves accordingly to implement one, no

It is great that your clients always have DNS resolution. Unfortuantley this is 
not true of many Declude customers. The issue here is not how much you know but 
rather how educated our customers are. Sandy, we talking old school vs noobs. 
We cannot spend the time explaining DNS to certain customers who barley know 
how to get a cmd prompt. In this case the suggestion to use a reliable external 
DNS. This is the best we can do. If you would like to take the time to educate 
these users feel free. I can certainly direct them to the lists or you 
personally.

Excuse me, things WILL be slowed down by using a DNS server over a WAN. 
However, where our product is concerned, a slow-down is much better than a 
serious backup of email which we see almost everyday due to in-house DNS server 
issues.

You are correct. In all cases, a local, recursive DNS server is a better

move it to your proc directory after you comment out the filters and declude 
will process it normally. If you have a large amount of mail in review, I 
suggest that you move it in smaller batches at a time so Declude can handle it 
more efficiently.

That would cut down on the DNS traffic, wouldn't it?  If I could process 
my
third party tests like Sniffer and INVURIBL and decide whether or not it 
is
even necessary to even make scores of RBL checks, for example...

Hi Ben. I do not believe this is a  Declude issue because I have never seen 
Declude actually strip an attachment. However, you may want to test to be sure 
by disabling Declude for a minute and having someone send a test through.

I have a  problem with invisible attachments and I'm wondering if it's an IMail 
problem, a Declude problem, or something else.



A law firm that I've dealt with for a long time recently has a problem that 
messages send to us with attachments sometimes don't display the attachments.  
They leave the sender with an attachment, but they arrive with no clue that  
there is an attachment.  If I forward them on to a gmail account I use for 
testing, then the attachments are visible there.



I've tested this with both Outlook Express and Mail Live on the receiving end 
and see nothing about the attachments.   I check on an Android phone using K-9 
and it doesn't show the attachments but does show the mail.dat file usually 
associated with Outlook and the formatting of messages (and these senders are 
using Outlook with MS Exchange).  However, the usual fix (use Plain Text Only) 
doesn't seem to help.



My first thought was that the attachments were getting stripped (by Declude?) 
at our server.  But since they still seem to be there once I forward to the 
gmail account, that excludes that idea.  I haven't had any problems receiving 
test JPG files as attachments and sometimes their PDF files get through just 
fine. So any idea what's going on here?

delay in my response, Ben. It looks like you may have a compromised account on 
your server. Do you have a Declude service agreement? If yes, I will be happy 
to have a look at your server and let you know for sure. If not, you can enable 
Declude Hijack which is a part of your Declude suite and it should catch the 
emails being sent from the compromised account. Thanks.

I remember a few years back that people were reporting a blank country chain. 
It may be a glitch that you are seeing. I can't recall the version that it 
happened in, but I know it has been resolved since then with our newer versions.

  The SA on that server isn't active but we're going to move over to 
SmarterMail with a new Declude anyway.   I was figuring that this client's own 
account must be compromised, since it's their return address.  However, why
