I have the same problem on 12.04 with Thunderbird 16.0.1.
After starting, CPU spikes up to ~60% and stays there for around 20

BTW I don't think this should be assigned to the wishlist as any new
users have no idea that they should launch from the terminal, and would
think that Ubuntu is a buggy system.

If I run sudo aticonfig --initial -f I get the following error and
after rebooting it gives me another error message saying The system is
running in low-graphics mode:

After installing that older 12.4 driver (as I mentioned in the above
comment) I opened the AMD control panel (before rebooting. If I reboot,
i'll loose unity) and it gave me an error saying there's no AMD graphic
driver installed. (But note that it worked in Ubuntu 12.04) Attached a
