[Elecraft] Working Japan from Boulder Colorado on a and KX3
Siri works difficultly. I was using my KX3. I just worked J a 9CZE on 7148 with my case to. I had it on double a batteries with 5 W and he gave me an estimate report. [Elecraft] K2 Signal to Noise on 160m ?
Is there normally high noise on 160m with a K2 ? Comparing the K2 to an old Ten Tec Delta the k2 signals seem to be lower and noise higher. A sharp sizzling frying pan noise was pronounced on the K2 and uncomfortable to listen to but barely there on the Delta. This a used K2 and I adjusted the STP (Sidetone Pitch) to my liking and wonder if that messed something up or is the K2 noisy on 160m ? This is the QRP K2 with ATU but no Noise Blanker or DSP. Re: [Elecraft] MRP40 CW Software SDR ver.
Fred, The webpage for the MRP40-SDR software indicates it is looking for a radio with IQ signal outputs. The KX3 has this. The K3 does not (natively). However, a K3 equipped with an XV3(or XV3A), plus an LP-Pan, SoftRock, or other IF to IQ baseband output would seem to be acceptable. (It is also possible to bring the IF signal out of a K3 without the transverter interface). I haven't used this software, but that's what I glean from reading the first few sentences on the webpage. 73, Bruce N1RX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] MRP40 CW Software SDR ver.
for any interested go here: http://www.polar-electric.com/Morse/MRP40-EN/ down under *News:* it has more info on the MRP40-SDR and even more including the download is here: http://www.polar-electric.com/Morse/MRP40-EN/MRP40-SDR.html I did try it out on my K3 using a softrock to tap the IF, it worked fine. You must use something like a softrock to convert the K3's IF out to the I/Q necessary to feed the MRP-SDR software. I have used my K3 and softrock with an on board as well as a Delta44 sound card using Rocky software. I have also run NaP3 using the softrock on the K3's IF out, and now having a P3 for the IF display. I didn't find the MRP40-SDR worth the $67 usd price *FOR ME* so if you are looking for cw decoder that's one thing, if you are wanting it for the waterfall display, that will need a middle man interface, like the softrock. However I do use and love the regular MRP40 Morse Code Decoder software. I have been happy with it's performance for many years. I compared it with all other free and paid cw decoders and found it to be the best! so how you want to use the MRP40-SDR and what you have to run it, on may make it worthwhile for you as in ymmv g you can download and try for free for 30 days so give it a shot, see what you think. P.S. more on the softrock interface for a K2 can be read here: http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/using_softrock_as_a_panadapter_for_the_k2.htm and GM0ELP has info on the softrock for the K3 here: http://gm0elp.blogspot.com/2008/08/k3-panadapter-softrock-v62-lite.html On 11/24/2013 9:36 AM, Fred Smith wrote: I have been looking at this software and see they have a SDR version of it, they list the KX3 as supported but not the K3. [Elecraft] remoting KPA500 tuner at antenna base
I know this has been covered once before but I am wondering if anyone has any further info on using the KPA500 remotely at a vertical antenna base? The pictures from the previous discussion are no longer available. I am not seeing much in the archives. So, here's my dilemma: I have been using a MFJ tuner which has just crapped out. It figures as it is poorly rated, but there is not much available for tuning higher power installations (read: KPA500). So the question is: If I set up a KAT500 for only antenna 1 and put it in automatic mode, to always power up if connected to 12V will it automatically tune my vertical with no other intervention from me? My installation is such that if I need to reprogram it with newer firmware I can just bring the tuner to the shack. I do not need to change antennas, manually tune or flip between auto and manual or byp. Has anyone done this and how has it worked? Has weather been an issue if properly protected? If this looks like it would work for me, does anyone have a god suggestion for a weather proof box to mount it in? It needs to survive the upstate NY winters. I am thinking Pelican or similar. Re: [Elecraft] remoting KPA500 tuner at antenna base
Hi, There seems to be an uptick in interest in this concept recently (I have responded to several E-mails over the last few weeks). I have run my KAT500 remotely in Upstate NY for almost a year now with absolutely no problems due to temperature or weather. Here is a few pictures: http://ab2tc.com/img_0124.jpg http://ab2tc.com/img_0128.jpg http://ab2tc.com/img_0179.jpg http://ab2tc.com/img_0181.jpg The enclosure is a feed container found here: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753804utm_source=googleproductutm_campaign=2753804utm_medium=csemr:referralID=e69722b5-5062-11e2-8751-001b2166c2c0 Having it in full auto mode with auto turn on when power is applied *should* work. Are you mostly CW or mostly SSB? On SSB a potential problem is that the tuner may decide to start tuning while you are talking and that is *not* nice. I was running an MFJ tuner like that for about a year before I decided to put in a cable for the tune button so I could run it in semi automatic mode where it would never start tuning on its own. With the KAT500 I have had full remote control using a wireless serial server from Lantronix almost since day one: http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/external-device-servers/wibox.html For a short while I was using an Ethernet connection, but it created a large number of birdies. Wireless has no interference below 30MHz whatsoever. Give it a try. You will enjoy it. Re: [Elecraft] MRP40
Fred, perhaps you misunderstood. To properly use the SDR version of this program, you need to present it with both I and Q signals (in-phase and quadrature). These would be routed into a 2-channel (stereo) soundcard. So, you need the I/Q output from the K3, provided by LP-Pan, SoftRock, or similar device. Then the 2 channel output needs to be connected to a stereo soundcard input on the PC. I don't believe the Signalink (USB?) is stereo, but I could be mistaken. Re: [Elecraft] creating an audio file to email
Todd; It is worth noting that there are a few parts to solving this problem. Audacity is a great software package, but it is only needed for the encoding of the file format problem. You can get the recording into your computer without anything else. There is a sound recorder utility included in Windows and on other platforms here are similar utilities. You can break this problem down into three parts: 1 - Connecting your K3 to your PC so the sound can be captured. (Requires cables discussed at length in the mailing list archives. Jim, K9YC has some sound and simple advice (no need for fancy sound interfaces if you are careful). 2 - Playing the recording without transmitting (TX TEST mode is useful here) and recording it on the PC in any format you can. 3 - Converting to a nice compressed format for email. You can do 2 and 3 together if you have the right software, but if you want to get it out of the rig 'now' you can defer step 3 until you have an audio transcoder like Audacity available to you. Just save the sample as a WAV file and test playing it back on the computer. You might find that this file is appropriate to email if you use an 8kHz sample rate… If you want to compress it for email, then you will need to use a transcoder (such as the functions built into Audacity, QuickTime or other examples)… There is no good reason to record the DVR output at anything higher than 8kHz sample rate, but 16kHz will be an appropriate amount of overkill. 44.1 and 48 kHz is just a waste of space. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Signal to Noise on 160m ?
The K2 sensitivity and receiver noise floor will not change much from band to band. In fact, with proper filter alignment, the internal receiver noise may even be more quiet on 160 than on other bands. You probably should not be using the preamp on 160 unless you have a low noise receiving antenna. For information on filter alignment for the K2, look at the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com. You can also find information about using Spectrogram for the K2 alignment on the newly mirrored N0SS (sk) website at http://www2.opparc.org/mirrors/n0ss/www.n0ss.net/wsdindex.html 73, Don W3FPR On 11/24/2013 9:52 AM, Jimithy66 wrote: Is there normally high noise on 160m with a K2 ? Re: [Elecraft] P3 question
Hi Fred, While I don't have an answer to your question I would like to offer an unrelated Fixed Tune Mode tip. Frequently I want to get the station of interest into the center of the screen but remain in Fixed Tune Mode. I think there are other ways to accomplish this but the one I use is to quickly toggle from Fixed Tune to Tracking and back to Fixed Tune. I do this by setting the menu option of FixTrack as a top row function key. A quick double tap of the function key moves the station to the center of the screen. 73, Mike K2MK k6dgw wrote I run my P3 in fixed-tune mode [span edges stay fixed, cursor moves as I tune]. I've done exactly that for the two K3s and two filter sets in my SO2R station. You need a properly wired cable between each K3 and the associated 5B4AGN filter box. Study the 5B4AGN manual and K3 manual for connector wiring, and build your own cable using quality connectors Works perfectly. Be VERY careful soldering the DIN connector at the filter set -- it's an el-cheapo grande with a dielectric that easily melts. I've found that liquid flux helps, and it also helps to have the connector you're soldering mated to a connector of opposite gender so that the pins don't go skywobbly. (Skywobbly is a technical term that I learned from my grandfather, who was an EE grad of Pratt, in Brooklyn, and who worked in the coal mines long before I was born). 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
