Jim,
Probably a good judge of performance is to see what the top DXers
and contesters are using. There has been a preference for the Yaesu
2K; its too early see where the 9K will come in. It's no accident a
current TEN TEC ad shows ON4UN with two Orion IIs. (Why two)? I'm
not sure where
Chas,
I don't think that what the top DXers contesters are using is necessarily
a good judge of performance.
At a recent meeting of the Hoosier DX Contest Club, I got into a
discussion with a couple of out-of-town contesters who were there to pick up
a plaque for top score in the Indiana

Ray,
The 1K doesn't work as well as a receiver with a narrow roofing
filter and a good front end although it is better than a receiver
without them. For example, there is a station across the bay and
only 5 miles away runs 1K watts on psk31 in a contest. He wipes out
the 1k about +\- 20

I would agree.. contesting success is largely affected by skill and
experience, part of which is driven by familiarity with equipment,

I expect this argument about receiver specs and methodology to be the next AM
vs SSB war. Simple tests were derived in the 70's to describe receiver
performance and many of us used these test to compare various analogue radios.
We think we know something when we quote these tests, but we may

More like the 40s..

First, lets assume the PC is a wash in this equation. A comparably
loaded SDR-1000, with a 100 watt PA, and assuming you did pare it up
with a LynxTWO sound
It is my understanding from Gerald that he has an OEM license for XP
that is good for quite some time (years).

Part of the problem is that the announcement of the F5k was a bit premature.
QST is released to a select few members before the rest of the membership and a
premature release of the F5K advertisement kind of forced the issue. I think
Flex was expecting a little more lead time to get all their
Lee .. What I think is interesting is that the impact of the
announcement centers around the price. The lack of information is
leading to a lot of negative talk where the price is the issue and not
the various features and improvements. As soon as you mention that the
$2500 includes a TCXO and

Tim, we use a difference of ~$650 [5k vs 1k with D44]. Some guys already

Hi,
Price is all relative. Isn't the Omni-VII about $2500 or a little
more, and it's not even a top-of-the line transceiver. I paid $3200 +
- for my Omni-VI in 1992, in 1992 $. What does the top-of-the line
transceiver of the big 3 plus Ten Tec go for? Can you compare the
Flex 5K to them?
