Hmm ... plasma-desktop was already installed, dragged in by plasma-meta. So
no need to reinstall it. Sadly trying to depclean after removing plasma-meta
will get rid of a lot of packages, something I'm not keen to do:

I made quite a determined attempt to do that on this system. I would uninstall
a meta package, then see what packages would be removed by emerge -c, and
emerge --noreplace any that I wanted to keep. Sounds simple, eh? Not so. I
soon found myself mired in loops and contradictory dependencies which I
couldn't escape.

I ended up reinstalling from scratch, avoiding as many meta-packages as I
could. I tried to build on kde-plasma/plasma-desktop, but it was simply too
basic. I spent a long time trying to find packages to restore what I was used
to in kde-plasma, but I concluded that it would need the knowledge of a kde
packager.

So I do still have five meta-packages. Ho hum.

I don't want to warn you off altogether, but at least be ready for some tricky
work. Lots of it!

Thank you Peter, I have been down that rabbit hole myself a few times and I'd
rather avoid repeating it as long as I can. The very reason I have not
implemented the same approach on this PC and thought of stiking to the wiki,
is because my package-at-a-time KDE approach invariably ends up breaking some
of the plasma desktop integration I want/need.

According to the current wiki page these days the kde-meta has been replaced

I think the kdebase-meta was meant to be a transitional package from KDE4 to
plasma/KDE5. I suspect this has been superseded by kde-plasma/plasma-meta,
but I'm not sure. In any case, I do not have this installed.

Sadly I'm not there yet. I've got to figure out how to get back my Suspend to
Ram, Hibernate, Reboot, and Shutdown buttons, without re-importing
NetworkManager, or at least without having it being started by powerdevil.

Hmm ... plasma-desktop was already installed, dragged in by

no need to reinstall it. Sadly trying to depclean after removing
plasma-meta

will get rid of a lot of packages, something I'm not keen to do:

>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

[snip long list of packages]

I just chose the specific packages I wanted and explicitly emerged
them. You can just add them to your world file (either manually, or
with "emerge --noreplace package" so they won't be depcleaned. I have
lots of kde stuff (37 items from grep kde worldfile) but kdecore-meta
and kdegraphics-meta are the only meta packages in my world file.

In a previous installation I used a similar approach, which soon became
somewhat tiresome. One package was retired, some other took its place and
more than once I would end up tying up myself in knots, trying to change the
list of individual packages and associated USE flags to allow portage to
update my desktop without dragging in all sort of unpleasants.

In a more recent installation I followed a different route. I installed
selected meta-packages from the list at the bottom of this page:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE

but first I disabled some USE flags to avoid networkmanager:

kde-plasma/plasma-meta -networkmanager
kde-plasma/powerdevil -wireless

This is the plasma-meta flags I use now:

[I] kde-plasma/plasma-meta
 Available versions:
 (5)
5.18.5 [bluetooth +browser-integration crypt +desktop-portal
discover +display-manager elogind grub gtk +handbook +kwallet +legacy-systray
+networkmanager plymouth pulseaudio qrcode +sddm sdk systemd thunderbolt
+wallpapers]["?? ( elogind systemd )"]
 Installed versions: 5.18.5(5)(19:51:01 21/05/20)(bluetooth browser-
integration crypt desktop-portal display-manager elogind handbook kwallet
legacy-systray sddm wallpapers -discover -grub -gtk -networkmanager -plymouth
-pulseaudio -qrcode -sdk -systemd -thunderbolt)

Admittedly, like you I have also installed LVM which I don't want/need on its
own. It is pulled in by sys-fs/cryptsetup, needed by pmount, which I use and
may want to use with encrypted filesystems in the future. I'm not sure if
ext4 fs encryption is mature enough presently and what it requires. A project
for a rainy day.

I mostly use the meta packages but there was one that I only needed a
couple programs from.  I removed the meta package and installed the
programs I wanted.  It worked fine but it could be that I just picked a
couple packages that are easy.  Before that, I tried not using any meta
packages. That was a disaster.  Given my usage, I don't think the
benefit of not using meta packages would have saved me much if
anything.  It results in a larger world file, dependency problems when
upgrading plus having more packages to keep up with manually since I run
unstable on KDE plus a few other GUI programs.

It would seem logical that not using meta package would result in a
leaner and easier to update system.  Thing is, in reality it isn't that
way.  Depending on what packages you pick to use but not part of the
meta package, it could create more work than it's worth.

I to noticed the wireless package coming in.  I have a wireless router
but everything except my printer and cell phone is hard wired. My puter
itself has nothing wireless about it.  Still, it's easier to just
install it and let it sit there than it is to fight to keep it off. It
doesn't do anything, it isn't in my way or popping up annoying messages
or anything either.  I just let it go.  I guess I could disable some USE
flags but I doubt that would help reduce anything either.

Basically, pick battles that are worth winning. ;-)  Sometimes even when
you win, you don't get anything for the win.

P. S. Video comparing KDE to other desktop was interesting.  Maybe KDE
is getting back to like it was when KDE3 was around.  I sorta miss those
days.  Neat desktop.  KDE4 sure had some growing pains.

I see no errors here, what is stopping the emerge from proceeding?

Because sys-fs/udisks:2 depends on it.

It's NOT trying to install gnome, the package is gnome-common with this
description:

Description: Common files for development of Gnome packages

The list of installed files are:

$ equery files gnome-common
 * Searching for gnome-common ...
 * Contents of gnome-base/gnome-common-3.18.0-r1:
/usr
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/gnome-autogen.sh
/usr/share
/usr/share/aclocal
/usr/share/aclocal/gnome-code-coverage.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/gnome-common.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/gnome-compiler-flags.m4
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/gnome-common-3.18.0-r1
/usr/share/doc/gnome-common-3.18.0-r1/ChangeLog
/usr/share/doc/gnome-common-3.18.0-r1/README

All they are is 4 small .m4 files to do useful stuff to let packages
build, very much like a few needed includes. They just happen to be
generically useful and just happen to be written by someone in the Gnome
team, and just happen to have names starting with this sequence of
letters: gee enn oh emm ee

I did manually mask everything, I added yours to it as well, but emerge
still wants to pull in qt5 and a bunch of stuff not needed. I've
attached the emerge output - you can see it's pulling masked packages
in. I can't figure out what wants to pull in all the qt5 stuff.

I've already manually installed the packages from kde-sunset:

# emerge -pv kde-meta

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R] kde-apps/kde-meta-4.14.3-r1:4::kde-sunset  USE="nls
-accessibility (-aqua) -kdepim -minimal -sdk" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

...but a world update wants to change everything. And I can't figure out
how to read the tree output from emerge. I've attached that too.

Oh, I also read the manpage for eshowkw and it doesn't show packages
from overlays by default. You have to use the -O switch, then it shows
it. One more thing to remember...

Dan

[gentoo-user] Pipewire not a dependency?

2022-09-28 Thread Michael
I'm trying to understand why one laptop with Plasma which had pulseaudio
removed, won't bring in pipewire as a dependency. I have set USE="-
screencast", because I don't need/want this functionality, as I have done on
other systems which nevertheless have had pipewire brought in as a dependency.

# emerge -1aNDv pipewire

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Am I meant to install pipewire manually on this system?

That is the only error message it ever gives and vast amount of effort

solution. I only installed Gentoo on this machine four and a half years
ago so it's hard to imagine what could have gotten this royally foobar
   in such a short period.

If you kept your system updated all the time, you shouldnt have any
  problems.

 Byte me.

Linux is crap, it takes all the talent I have to keep this piece of junk
running. =( I'm the user here, I am not going to take any lip from you
about how I run my system. =| I put a great deal more work into
maintaining my system than most of the rest of you.

If that is your opinion of Linux, why use it?

The ncurses problem has been a low-level
issue for a long time but, with tinfo set, 99% of packages worked.

Define low-level issue. What was broken all the time that you ignored?

Busybox, valgrind, a number of other minor packages.

Cause for these is in your make.conf, see below.

   2. It sent out a profile that sets variable ABI_x86 with 32 bit enabled.
ALARM: ABI_x86 should be set in exactly one place:
/etc/portage/make.conf and nowhere else. But, nevertheless, ABI_x86 WAS
set which broke the profile because my system cannot compile 32 bit
   executables. =( I tried the no-multilib profile but it didn't have a
number of essential useflags and was foobar.

You're still not providing the slightest bit of useful information.

What happens if you try to generate a 32bit executable?

Fails completely due to linking errors even though it should always be
possible to compile something without its binary dependencies (with only
the headers) because symbol resolution should take place at load time. =|

Cause is in your make.conf. See below.

What gcc are you using, with what settings?

By all appearances, Emerge identifies the most broken version of
everything it can find and uses that without providing any user feedback.

Cause is in your make.conf. See below.

Here's my make.conf, some lines might be changed because I have been
struggling to find a working configuration.

 /etc/portage # cat /etc/portage/make.conf
 # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
 # built this stage.
 # Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
 # detailed example.
 CFLAGS=-O3 -march=native -pipe

Most people tend to put -O2. Not much point to use -O3.

 CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS}

 LDFLAGS=-lncurses

You're forcing ncurses into every single package. Please remove this.

[gentoo-user] useflag hell.

2016-02-28 Thread Alan Grimes
I've been running number theory code for a few weeks, so haven't been
updating my machine too often...

I for the last day or so I'm in a run my "pretendupdate" script, look at
the results, decide whether to run ufed or bleep with package.use
run the pretendupdate script again, do something while it computes, come
back to it hours later, and repeat the cycle... This is really getting
silly and I'm starting to suspect that I'm stuck in useflag hell and
there isn't a solution to this.

tortoise ~ # ./pretendupdate

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-libs/icu:0

(dev-libs/icu-56.1:0/56::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
(no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

  (dev-libs/icu-55.1:0/55::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
dev-libs/icu:0/55=[abi_x86_32(-),abi_x86_64(-)] required by
(dev-qt/qtcore-4.8.7-r1:4/4::gentoo, installed)

^^

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
