After all, when these lists were started.
VALVe didnt have a forums, or social media website.

To be honest.
These lists are kind of obsolete now that I think about it.

With the forums right there. And all of the Developer Announcements already
right there.

Maybe it is time to end the lists. After all they are not needed anymore
with Steam forums announcements.
And dedicated forums for HLDS/SRCDS already there.

What do you think Gabe, Eric, and Erik?

Noting the ineffectiveness of the upgraded ( hull armor ) Abrams tank in

As well as assessing target damage of a recent bombing run.
While reviewing casualty reports of Ukrainians KIA by Russian Federation

A lot of Stolen Valor around VALVe and on these lists.

Like how it went from REAKTOR to Steam.

Anyone here remember Alfred, remember back in 2001 to 2003?
The time the list allegedly got hit by a Virus?
The worlds first encryption virus / ransomware was what VALVe got hit with.

Or when someone at VALVe downloaded that virus through a link.
And it backdoored HL2 Alpha files from their network?

Yeah.
Valve has stolen much, and made quite a few Enemies over the years.
Including their ex developers.
For a lot of Intellectual Property Theft.

I point that out. Cause Alfred is gone.
And the people there today, are the worst in the industry.
With the sloppiest mash up of mixed programming in the history of a
software developer.

That said.
Decompile VALVes stuff sometime ( I Recommend HxD decompiler, freeware
hexadecimal / machine assembly editor / programming tool ).

You will see Quake 2 code still in GoldSRC.
You will see HAVOKS physics still in Source.
Havok was the real genius behind the physics engine.

Anyone remember how it went from WON slow updating, to REAKTOR development?
OR how Reaktor became Steam?
Not Grid, not Gazelle.

REAKTOR.

Shows how much theft, misinformation, and disinformation is out there about
the factual Developer(s) of Steam platform. Versus the Staff at Valve who
stole the concept, and profited off of it.

Stole all of the communities concepts over the years.

I can see why everyone cheats in cs2.
Or hacks the platform, and rips them off for every game title on the
platform.

Why the platform is being exploited all of the time.

Its ok though, a Master never reveals everything.
And not just anyone can speak 1 and 0 fluently.
Nor knows what Binary Logic Controller programming using boolean algebra is.

I digress.

Yall be safe with all that wide open script kiddy engine shit over there.
Cause the engine for the Client, the Steam Client, HLDS/SRCDS can all be
used as points of attack for anything connected to the Steam network.

End Contact.

A few months later, someone on this list stole that POC.

Made the bitmap, and got paid by VALVe for an exploit I found.

I want that person to respond to this msg.
And admit they are a Thief.

I have a number of other exploits.
That I never revealed to VALVe or these lists.

A Master will never disclose the full knowledge in front of amateurs.

I will state this.

HLDS / SRCDS can be used to inject any client with anything.
HLDS / SRCDS can be used to inject STEAM PLATFORM with anything. ( Token
Auth Server / VAC ).

And any MAP, MODEL, SKIN, SPRITE, TEXTURE, OR even just a simple resource
file.

CAN ALL HAVE MALICIOUS PROGRAMMING EMBEDDED INTO THEM.

Just like the Spraypaint exploit.
Malicious Programming can be embedded into any image file, texture file,
model file, material file, map file.

Or in just a malformed packet / file.
And transmitted from the HLDS / SRCDS.

Now, I dare ya. Try to steal this one and get paid for it on HackerOne.

Oh wait it's not that bad! The file 'liblist.gam' is back to the default.

So only thing you have to do (when running metamod) is adding it again
in the liblist.gam in the cstrike folder:

Change:
gamedll "dlls\mp.dll"
gamedll_linux "dlls/cs.so"
gamedll_osx "dlls/cs.dylib"

To:
gamedll_linux "addons/metamod/dlls/metamod_i386.so"

And then all is working again :)

The "steam_legacy" branch has just been made available on the
HLDS app for those who want or need it to get servers for broken
mods back up and running. As Sam mentioned, pass "-beta
steam_legacy" as part of your app_update command in SteamCMD.

Any instructions anywhere on how to actually accomplish this via

Re: [hlds_linux] Re: [Csgo_servers] Counter-Strike 2 Test Dedicated Server?

2023-03-24 Thread Sam V
Valve announced on the csgo_servers mailing list they were upgrading to
newer compilers a while back. I've included the post here:

   1.38.5.2 update - SteamRT v3 sniper - are you ready? /Vitaliy
   Genkin/ 03 Feb 2023 17:54 UTC

Game update 1.38.5.2 introduced several Linux libraries compiled
with GCC-5 or later. While we didn't expect any ABI
incompatibilities, some community dedicated server systems needed to
update their libstdc++ installation. Generally speaking, if your
dedicated server is running on an older Linux OS, you should be able
to recompile your libraries with a more recent version of GCC and
add your library path to LD_PRELOAD. For example, libraries
recompiled with GCC-9.3.0 worked well on CentOS7 for some community
   server operators.

Going forward, we are planning to update our Linux compiler
toolchain for dedicated servers with more recent libraries. Future
libraries update will bump the requirements up to glibc 2.31 (Ubuntu
20.04 / Debian 11), that's why we are reaching out to community
server operators now and advising to upgrade production Linux OS
   installations ahead of time.

The best option for operating community dedicated servers will be to
host a Docker container on your Linux OS, even though running
servers in an 'as is' fashion on a suitably recent Linux
distribution with recent libraries might also work.

A future update to our dedicated servers will be compiled against
the sniper platform runtime, which we already publish here:
   https://gitlab.steamos.cloud/steamrt/sniper/platform/container_registry/95

Using the sniper image runtime on community dedicated servers has
the advantage that we will build our dedicated servers exactly for
this target, and as long as the host Linux OS can run this Docker
container, server operators will not have to deal with any ABI
   compatibility issues.

We recommend that server operators should start preparing to run
community dedicated servers using a suitable Linux OS & Docker
solution. Server operators should be able to start using the sniper
runtime image now, which is available here:
   https://gitlab.steamos.cloud/steamrt/sniper/platform/container_registry/95
... just run the current dedicated servers in it, and this will
guarantee that your dedicated servers will be ready to run future
   updates when they are released.

   GL HF!

It implies the need for community servers to get off any old Linux

It also seems to emphasize a long-term strategy to move dedicated
servers to Docker containers, instead of running directly on the OS.

As I said, not sure about the reliability of the information.

Assuming those emails weren't faked (and I have no reason to believe so unless

correct/flamewar if not (which seems more likely, due to given evidence), has
been resolved, and we can go back to relevant discussion.

Whilst I agree with most of what you said, flashing the BIOS is definitely

Migrating to a dual-core or higher cloud instance resolved the issue.

I confirmed that by again rebuilding the server, confirming the issue

He's not even getting the engine loaded, let alone attempting the
gamedll load due to the GLIBC dependency issue. As noted, it's likely
from using the client files, rather than the server files (the _srv

You need to download the linux dedicated server files via SteamCMD. The
client files have a much newer GLIBC requirement.

Any chance for players that don't have it to be able to change their FoV to
110 as well, or do they need really need to buy this to have an advantage
over other players? :)

The Oculus is currently 1280x800, which is then split between 2 eyes, it
makes for a fuzzy game. It would not be any fun for CS:S right now, once
the resolution of the devices increases then maybe that changes (and they
are promising increasing resolutions).

After Thursday's update I found that almost every custom map we have
installed on the server would crash the server as soon as a player chose
a team to join (after a map change).

These are the maps that would crash our server as described above EVERY
TIME:
cp_wolf
cp_420_crazed__arena_v2
cp_horus_b3
cp_orange_x
ctf_canyon_final
ctf_stronghold_b5
ctf_valley

Setting mp_forcecamera to 3 stopped the crashes. I had it set to
mp_forcecamera 0 originally.

Since 3 is apparently the default I just commented out the
mp_forcecamera cvar in server.cfg and rebooted the servers.

Now to try to figure out why custom map files are being changed.

Between all these unexpected gotchas, the load TF2 instances put on our
server hardware, and attitude of so many of this game's players, we are
really starting to question running this game at all.

2008-01-23 Thread Steve S.
I run the steambans plug on both my CS and TF2 servers without issues,
they are both solid.

I can now say that it is SteamBans plugin too, I disabled it at our
 servers and no more restarts.

Hmm.. I have seen that too.

Do you have the steambans plugin installed? Got rid of all crashes when
 I
 disabled the steamban plugin.

I was about to report it to SB, but apperently I forgot about it. =)

Re: [hlds_linux] Re: About srcds_i486 (tf2) process priority

2007-12-21 Thread Andrius Pirus
Ok. I see. Thanks for info. NI valude is really 0 for
srcds_i486 (when using command top), but priority
shows as -3. But for almost all other processes it is
20 (also cs 1.6 servers). I remember one time i used
command taskset -c (to assign srcds_i486 process to use
only one core), but then i changed back it to default
(all cores used, no taskset -c in startup line). But it
couldn't be related with proccess priority, cause
server and proccesses was restarted several times with
default startup line..

Quoting Devin Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
the lower the priority the more important the
process in regards to
 CPU
time (which allows it to get cpu time above other
processes), you can
specify this with a command line argument (nice or
renice once it is
running) i don't know of any hard coded scheduling
present in the srcds
process, typically this is handled by the kernel
unless otherwise
 specified
 (nice or renice).

-3 should be ok tho, is is a higher priority but it
can go as low as -20
 so
 it's not that bad?

Re: [hlds_linux] Re: About srcds_i486 (tf2) process priority

2007-12-20 Thread Michael McKoy
The actual priority and the niced priority are different. The priority changes
all the time, while the niced value is used to force it to a certain level.

Make sure you're reading the niced column. Tasks using CPU will generally have
a lower value (lower number = higher priority) than ones not doing anything.

If this was in reply to my issue, the problem was that I did an update for dod,
instead of dods in the /srcds_l directory.

Doing that is bad, and I have learned my lesson.

John: First off, please reply to the message you are actually
*contextually* replying to. It makes following the whole discussion easier.

Secondly, it's a Pentium 4 with 3.6 GHz? Then it should actually support
SSE2... so the problem might lie elsewhere. Unfortunately, Valve hasn't
been at all forthcoming with information on this bug. Somebody should
probably call them over the phone, since phone calls are by definition
harder to ignore.

Arc: didn't mean to insult anybody. I should probably have put decent
in quotes too, not only remedy. Of course it's a Valve issue, and of
course non-SSE2 machines are still pretty decent. I'll use this space to
categorically declare that I wasn't intentionally pointing fingers at
Linux server admins and calling their machines junk, and if I did so
unintentionally, I apologize. I simply didn't expect anybody taking me
*that* strictly by the word.

Once the engine's behavior and quirks have been thoroughly hashed out,

The developers at Valve had very good reasons to set the max number of

In addition, one of the maps tc_hydro has potentially too many base

 ok

If Timed out is displayed then it can be because of many things ..

- the server did crach, can be corrupted files, hardware failures.
- autoupdating because of new verion realese.
- loading the server to hard so it restart treads ( I have never
experienced
this ).

run memtest and check voltage, if its craching then its switching to
certain
maps - remove thouse maps.

Good Luck.

RE: [hlds_linux] Re: ContentServer rejected client session login

2007-09-27 Thread Alfred Reynolds
This isn't the case, there is no anonymous distinction on the Content
Server. That problem is due to a misbehaving server (usually
configuration or serious network problem), when you get that error
please email me with the IP you are connecting from and the output of
./steam -command ticketexplorer so we can debug the problem.

Dave Dodd wrote:
 Hi,

 someone know to fix this?

I am pretty sure this is because there are too many anonymous
sessions to the update server at the time you are trying.

If you have a username/password (in the the old days you needed one)
 try
specifying this on the command line you are using to update and I
 think you
 will get around the problem.

Either that or just re-try in 5 minutes and see if the number of
 sessions has
dropped enough for you to get one.

change echo retry to sleep 10 or something. Original post below:

However, the above depends on ./steam returning non zero on every type of

for me, the connection reset occurs when the install gets to another
section.

Okay, I'm getting more and more fed up with not only the fouled up
  installs
(files missing, some installing incorrectly), but the constant
 connection
resets while attempting to install TF2. I've been as diplomatic as
  possible,
but now, the steam update tool is installing TF2 into a different
 install

  Checking/Installing 'Team Fortress 2 Content' version 5

  0.00% .\tf\bin\server.dll

Okay, as you can see, that's the beginning of the install. Notice all of
  the
no record found at .'s? This is a blank folder installing a new install
 of
tf2, running the command ./steam -command update -game tf -dir .
 which
should install our game. However, sometimes I get what you see above,
  other
times I get half No record at . and half No record found at

You cannot be serious in that I am getting different paths to install
 the
files when trying to install tf2 multiple times. If it's not one thing,
  it's
  another.

Yes I know it's a beta, so if you're going to retort that this is a
 beta,
don't. This is a public beta, and if it wasn't ready for prime-time beta
testing, it shouldn't have been released. I've just had it up to here
 with
Linux being the bastard child of the dedicated servers with VALVe, and
 the
fact that I purchased a server specifically to host this game, and I
  *can't
even install the damn files to do so*, I've about reached my limit. I've
hosted Source for coming up on three years, and I've dealt with some
 wacky
stuff over the years (like updates completely breaking Linux, no plugins
involved), but this takes the cake.

Can you throw the Linux admins a bone, VALVe? Honestly.

I got

270 x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 31 days = 723.16 GB per
month, but that is at 24 players every second of every day, which is
pretty much impossible. I would figure around 500-600GB on a popular
server. Sound right?

Hey, I've never run a dedicated server before, but just set one up for
TF2.
I was wondering what the average bandwith usage I can expect to see on a
monthly basis for a server that stays pretty full pretty consistently
at a
player cap of 24.
Thanks.

Good Luck.

Update appears to be working great. I'll be testing sv_pure soon to see if
the problems I had earlier (custom sounds were not working correclty) have
been fixed. Also, I see the renice issues we've had on and off are still
with this update. Can we get some sort of official word on the renice
problem and if you guys plan on a fix (setting renice to -20 makes CPU usage
to go 100%).

Thanks!

This could explain why my out-dated Athlon 2400 and 2800 machines have
not seen many of the performance issues mentioned on this list, or I'm

2007-08-01 Thread Ondřej Hošek

1. Digests are evil. I don't understand why people use them and I think
they should be criminalized. It's not like modem connections are
prevalent or even acceptable today and there is no other use for digests
than to conserve bandwidth (since mail filtering is all too easy with
mailing lists and digests break the threading of mailing lists). Valve's
listmaster: could you please somehow disable the digest option? Thanks.

2. What the hell happened to 0x0A, the NEWLINE character? I mean, this
is a beautiful piece of ASCII art, but I can't read it.

RE: [hlds_linux] Re error with motd.txt

2007-07-11 Thread taytrrs
Your motd worked fine on my server (windows). Verify that your motdfile
variable (server.cfg or autoexec.cfg) points to the right file name)
'motdfile motd.htm' vs. 'motdfile motd.txt'. Also, I can go up to 2046
bytes in the motd.txt (at 2047 bytes it doesn't display anymore) Your
motd.txt file is only 1396 long.

Since you have some web space I'd recommending redirecting to your website
so you don’t have to worry about it at all. Once you're browsing an
external site in the motd window you don't have to worry about file size at
all. Here's an example from my test server:

The smoothness Counter-strike Source had on the linux server is gone.
Obviously you didn't read what specs hardware I had, and you probably would
assume
more than 5. But anyway yes, 2 per core.
No one has update me about the steam updater issue.

Hello Alfred (and the rest of you),
Since the last 2 updates we noticed a decrease in performance on
Centos 4 and 5 machines with the newest updates and GLIBC.
Running modified 2.6.22-rc3 Kernels,
The server side FPS goes to 10 and go back up. Has anyone experienced
this?
We also have been experiencing increased choke as well. No idea whats
causing this because the boxes
are at minumum load.
Any suggestions or idea?
We are talking Dual Intel Woodcrests and Clover town CPU's
With 4GB to 6GB of RAM.
Much help would be great.

Reply-To: hlds_linux@list.valvesoftware.com

Hey Guys,
Since Version 20 of the Steam Updater was released,
and the previous version also had this problem, it'll dump a hlds_tool.pkg
file in the users
directory and fail to update it. I have to manually give full permissions
to
it.
Now the second issue is that with even full privledges under Centos 4/5
the
updater
Fails to apply attributes to a file in HL2 and quits updating.
I have to manually update this through root. I'd like so that I wouldn't
have to update it over 150 servers
next time an update comes out.
Thanks,

What is the tickrate, kernel hertz, fps_max and player numbers your are
trying to run?
What does the rcon stats CPU usage say at the time its feeding back 10fps?

We tried running Windows 2003 on dual cpu dual core xeon 5160 (3.0GHz 4MB
Shared L2 cache) with a 1ms kernel timer and with 32 Players @ 100tick
fps_max 600 and when it got full, I saw 10fps at times.

I put that down to SRCDS being SRCDS though, and simply reduced the player
numbers down to 24 per SRCDS per core.

Maybe there are performance problems with SRCDS, or maybe some of us are
being overly ambitious, I don't know. I do know that reducing the load by
lowering the player numbers and the tickrate does solve the problem, but
whether that answer is to everybodys satisfaction, I'm not entirely sure.

Are you running tickrate 100 and do you see it decreasing as you start up
more gameservers? like the first gameserver seems to run fin with tick100,
but when more gameservers are started to tickrate, for them alle, starts
to
lower more and more, so that when you have 5 gameservers running a
tickrate
100 server is at a mere 93-96... and the gameservers are idle and load is
low.

we also updated to the latest beta a few hours ago.
net_quued_packet_thread 0 is no longer required, works perfectly with 1
now.

but something's still bugging me: people still talk about lags during
gameplay.
the strange part about this: lags _only_ occur while dead or in spec
mode!!

during gameplay, lags don't happen any more.
what's wrong with this? i don't get it...

does anyone else have this behavoir?

thx,

This seems to be an issue with zBlock as I am getting the following:
[zBlock] Using ServerGameDLL006 for serverdll
zBlock: Unable to hook server convars! (Unloading)
Your server must be up-to-date to run this plugin
if it is, then the plugin itself may be out-of-date
Failed to load plugin ../cstrike/addons/zblock
If I remove zBlock for the addons folder, the alias command does not crash the
server. So even though the plugin failed to load, it is still causing issues.

Read the FAQ, you have to add all the custom content to that
pure_server_whitelist.txt file.
If they still dont work, notify here please. I'm using you as a guineapig ;)

PS: I have latest mani 1.2 working fine on 3 servers, under linux /
metamod. Not sure about standalone version but it should work too if the
metamod one does.

-ics

Guy Watkins kirjoitti:

Disconnect: Pure server: file [GAME]\models/player\lduke\admintv1\terror.mdl
does not match the server's file..

I can't play on my own server..Owned

But the files are the same! I used pscp to copy the file from my PC to the
Linux /tmp dir and did a diff.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] cstrike]# diff ./models/player/lduke/admintv1/terror.mdl
/tmp/terror.mdl
[EMAIL PROTECTED] cstrike]#

No output indicates there are no differences!

I tried about 6 times, same error. I then exited the game (PC) and then
reconnected from the servers screen. Still happens. I did not get a
choice to download the correct file. This feature is not going to work very
well if the user can't just select Fix it (or similar). Most players will
not know how to correct wrong files. In fact, I don't know what to do, even
if the file really was different. Maybe steam -verify_all

I am going to bed.

Thanks,
Guy

RE: [hlds_linux] Re: hlds_linux digest, Vol 1 #5595 - 1 msg

2007-05-24 Thread Thomas h

I rather wonder why the Server FPS drop to 60 and lower sometimes.
We are using some 3800+ X2 machines and it is not possible to run 20
clients
at Tickrate 100, even if it is the only Server on the machine!

CPU load doesn't go ever 50-60%. Ram isn't an issue either!

We are running current Debian 4.0 release with 1000Hz Kernel und modified
libc.
Some months/years ago, performance was much better.

We need to improve our hardware, but in act the engine itself shouldn't
require better hardware that it did during the release.

I cant be the valve software, even though its not perfect and the lack of
64bit support is a joke, but I run 40-50 slots on random maps (eg.
de_inferno) with zblock perfectly on a AMd X2 3800+ CPU. If you have issues
with drops I would probsbly look at the disk subsystem.

Re: [hlds_linux] Re: SRCDS crash

2007-05-08 Thread ics

Those really tell nothing to anyone. Hundreds of things can have caused
those crashings. You should run your server with -debug option (like you
seem to be doing already) enabled and edit srcds_run file a bit so you
get full coredumps instead of those tiny ones. In this file, find the
part where it says ulimit -c 2000. Change this 2000 to unlimited. Next
time when you get a crash, you get full coredump (170MB+ instead of
2MB). After this, you do a backtrace by typing gdb srcds_i486
core.number where the number is that coredump you got. After this, type
bt and it does the backtrace to you and that tells much more, in other
words, what exactly caused the crash.
Note that you must have gdb installed to do this.

I assume you have somekind of external plugins installed`that cause the
crash?
