I've never had to comvert my mp3 files to mp4 to play them on my ipod touch.
I just transfer the mp3 files to the ipod touch
to the ipod touch and they

The simplest way is to Copy and paste them into the "automatically add to
iTunes" folder.
The folder's default location is
c:\users (Your user name), \mymusic\iTunes\iTunesMusic\Automatically Add to
iTunes."
