Yes, by editing the /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow file. Check out
the hosts_access(5) manual. Of course you should know that telnet's
security is really crappy, because it passes passwords
and everything works fine.
It seems to me that there is some state information stored
somewhere that got messed up for root but is fine for the regular
user. However, I have been unable to find where that state
information is kept or how to fix it.

and will execute a command file before shutting down. If I can set
up a batch file to send a rsh or ssh instruction to shutdown then I
can accomplish the automatic shutdown based on the UPS on the
Windows box. Not as exact but better than what I have now.

a Debian / Ubuntu user so I am a little lost in the CentOS - yum
world. GoDaddy support is completely worthless. I have tried searching
on Google but have not found what I am looking for.
Can anyone give me a pointer to how I can solve this problem?
