Re: [libreoffice-marketing] June Marketing Call

2016-06-08 Thread Mike Saunders
Just to follow up on this, it would be really great to have people from
many different territories join our next marketing call on June 13. For
the release of LibreOffice 5.2 we want to produce videos, press releases
and other materials in as many languages as possible -- so if you speak
another language than English and want to help out, please join the
call, and we'd really appreciate your help!

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice videos: how-to guide

2016-06-14 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

I had a request to write up some tips and guidelines from my experience
making LibreOffice marketing videos, so here it is:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Video_how-to_guide

I'm still learning along the way, so if there's anything else I should
have or anyone has questions, let me know! Likewise, it'd be great to
have videos in other languages.

I'm working on a general-purpose LibreOffice promotional video now (just
waiting to get better audio), and soon will start creating the 5.2 New
Features videos, so translations of those would be awesome to have.

There's a lot of great content on our marketing wiki, but it can be a

All feedback welcome! If people are happy with it, we can put it as
the

first link on https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing and spread
it around social media to (hopefully) bring more people in to the
Marketing project.

Thanks for doing this. Always nice to give some direction to
new-comers.

The list looks good and not complicated. Nice!

Perhaps letting new comers know that helping out does not necessarily
mean a large contribution of time, and that any amount of
contribution, no matter how much or little time involved is most
welcomed. Many people think that you have to promise hours of time but
really, even if all it involves is about 5 minutes/day or 20 minutes
to help proof messages or fix wiki pages, then this is also welcomed.

One other aspect that I usually think really important is that people
should have fun contributing ... it is not a job, but volunteered
time. If it becomes a "chore" helping out and no fun, then they could
try another section with LibreOffice and see if they could contribute
elsewhere -- it is amazing how one's talents can be put to good use on
the project!

Cheers,

Marc

[libreoffice-marketing] Idea: script for general purpose LibreOffice marketing video

2016-05-30 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

We have various videos talking about new features in LibreOffice 5.1,
but I was also thinking about making a general purpose video explaining
what the software is, what it does, how it's developed, why it's
important and so forth. Here's a script I've put together -- any
feedback would be welcome!

THIS IS LIBREOFFICE

LibreOffice is a fully-featured office suite including all the tools you
need to get your work done quickly and efficiently.

Writer, the word processor, lets you create complex and attractive
documents with its powerful styles system.

Calc is packed with professional features and built-in functions to help
you manage spreadsheets with ease.

Impress is an outstanding tool for creating rich and effective
presentations, to really get your message across.

Draw lets you produce anything from quick sketches and diagrams to
complex plans and leaflets.

In addition, LibreOffice includes other valuable tools like Base, a
database front-end, and Math for editing equations and formulas.

LibreOffice is built around the Open Document Format, a fully open and
standardised file format that guarantees access to your data forever.
But it can also open and save proprietary files from other office
software.

And even with all these features, LibreOffice is completely free to use,
share and modify. It's open source, so anyone can help to improve the
suite and add new features.

And thousands of people have done so: LibreOffice is developed and
supported by a worldwide community, and it's available in XXX languages,
helping to bridge digital divides across the globe.

Tens of millions of people use LibreOffice every day, in homes, schools,
workplaces and government departments. And for companies that want to
switch to LibreOffice, commercial support and migration assistance is
available.

So try it today: join us at www.libreoffice.org, download the latest
version, and get productive with open source, open standards, and full
control of your data.

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice general purpose promotional video: translations

2016-06-23 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

As some of you may have seen, we've made a new LibreOffice promotional
video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KC0ZdcA6s8

It's not specific to one release, so it can be used at any point to
quickly explain what the software is, and the benefits it offers.

It would be awesome to have versions in other languages than English as
well, like we had with the 5.1 New Features videos (French, Spanish,
German). If anyone is interested in recording audio in another language,
here is the script:
https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/1902#note-3

It's best to use a dedicated microphone rather than one built-in to a
webcam or laptop. If anyone makes a recording, please email it to me to
check, and I can then create a new video based around it!

Thanks in advance for any help :-)

You cannot do attachments on the mailing lists. However, you can leave

Hey K-J,

Thanks for the feedback!

- Front Cover: Missing icon for Base-Module

They're on the front just to add some colour -- I'll try adding Base but
they might get a little too small...

- The grey icons in middle of page 2 don't work good with the grey
background.

Good point; I'll try with a lighter background.

- The Macro icon is jagged. You need a better size.

Yep, I've been meaning to replace this, but can't find a high-res
version despite looking everywhere. Any ideas where I could find one?
Maybe I need to poke around in the Git repo :-)

- (little thing) Second page: Cals is .. After "intuitive," there is a
space

Good catch! I normally spot those extra spaces from a mile away (after
working so long in publishing) but missed that.

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 5.1 videos: other language translations

2016-02-18 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

I've added the LibreOffice 5.1 New Features videos to the wiki here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Videos

Next to each video there's a "Script for translations" link -- this
contains the original English script used in the videos. It would be
great if we could make some translations! If you speak another language
and want to help, just edit the script page for the relevant video and
add your translation(s) under the original.

Even better, if you have access to a quiet room and have a decent
microphone, you could make an audio recording, upload it and I will
create a new video using it. You don't need expensive audio kit; I just
used a €20 USB microphone.

Pierre-Yves Samyn has already done French versions:

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Released LibreOffice For Dummies v2

2016-05-11 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi there,

I don't speak any Portuguese, but it looks like the previous version was
popular, and the more LibreOffice-related documentation we have, the
better!

The only thing I'd mention is: are you sure you can use "para Leigos" in
the title? I know that "for Dummies" is heavily protected by publisher
Wiley in the English market -- ie we couldn't independently release
"Hamster Rearing for Dummies" without potential legal troubles.

Looking at this:
http://www.altabooks.com.br/images/product/16/3D_Piano_Para_Leigos.jpg

It looks like the "para Leigos" is a trademark in Brazil, so it may be
worth using something else in the title of this LibreOffice book.

Cheers,
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] Marketing call minutes: 17 May 2016

2016-05-17 Thread Mike Saunders
For those who had trouble connecting, Italo will organise a follow-up
call using an alternative system (eg Jitsi) in another two or three
weeks.

Feel free to add any thoughts below!

Marketing call 17 May 2016

Attendees:
Mike Saunders
Italo Vignoli
Sophie Gautier
Franklin Weng
Rajesh Ranjan
Chandrakant Dhutadmal

Agenda:

1. Announcement of LibreOffice 5.2: team brainstorming
-> Large number of features and improvements, more than in 5.1
-> Announcements and press packs in local languages for Asian markets
-> We have list of journalists and can see when they open press
releases
-> Tagline or theme -- 5.2 has existing features that are now more
prominent with toolbar buttons / shortcuts -- "Unleash the hidden
power"?

2. Preparation of announcement materials: discussion of needs
-> Italo and Mike start working on this at end of May; will share a
list for comments
-> Main press release + one technical release + "Road to LO 5.2"
(highlights of previous main releases)
-> Talk about Document Liberation Project in press releases to raise
awareness -- "LibreOffice 5.2 uses libraries from the Document
Liberation Project..."
-> Show how Calc has improved in number of features and compatibility
with Excel -- feature gap is slimming down, show with screenshots?
-> Start circulating press kid in early June for comments, and everyone
to add their needs

-> We can produce press releases for single markets, on request
-> Indian press release: translate into 20 languages used in the
country that are also supported by LO

3. Organization of pre-announcements for journalists
-> 1 week before: finish slides and notes so that NLPs can do media
briefings in their own languages

-> 2 days before announcement: calls in different territories
-> Conference calls for media training so that other community members
are at ease talking to journalists

4. Creation of specific badges/barnstars for LibreOffice 5.2
-> Barnstars haven't really taken off in May campaign

5. Launch of "Week/Month of LibreOffice 5.2" in August?
-> Easy to repeat from May campaign
-> Can be reproduced locally or for specific territory
-> Might make sense for specific time of year in other countries (eg
Chinese new year?)
-> Global project, but have to be strong locally -- run local campaigns
to be visible at government levels

-> Taiwan: discussion moving on from ODF to actually using LibreOffice,
in same way as UK with local developer teams. Version for Taiwanese govt
to be developed?
-> ODF files saved by MS Office causing issues, hence discussion about
moving to LO. So promote earlier?
-> Set up "Month of LibreOffice" campaign (not just for a specific
release) for Taiwanese market
-> Release pace may look too fast compared to MS Office. That's why we
have "families" (5.x). It's OK to update once a year, not every six
months
-> People may assume that LO file format changes with every release,
like with some software -- we should stress that ODF stays the same. So
you don't need to update constantly

6. LibreOffice events around the world (e.g. FUEL/GILT in India)
-> FUEL/GILT is September 30. One of the largest conferences; worth
targeting Indian govt. audience; good opportunity for TDF to discuss and
convince govt about ODF
-> Community in India needs to learn more about migrations -- but
shouldn't be big problem getting big support in India
-> Five countries (eg UK, Netherlands) working on making ODF mandatory,
so some examples to show to Indian govt

7. Other topics suggested by participants
-> Some big migration documents in Italian; may be worth showing to
governments in other territories, and then look at translations if
there's interest
-> Trainer certification: some great trainers in Taiwan, but many are
only familiar with one part of the software (eg just Writer), whereas LO
training requires knowledge of most/all components

-> Franklin can help with finding and certifying more people in Taiwan

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Marketing Conference Call

2016-07-20 Thread Mike Saunders

NOTES FROM THE CALL

* Italo and Mike working on press release for LO 5.2: short general
information at the start, summarising the release; add at the end a
technical part, with links to background information

* We should talk about the new functions and features in Calc, bringing
LO closer to Excel

* UI changes: send a broad message that LO has a very flexible
interface, eg with the new single toolbar modes in Writer and Calc. Use
language that's closer to end users than UI experts

* Document classification: we are using a standard. Microsoft is using
another approach, RMS (Right Management System). Position LO in this
area as it becomes viable tool for large companies that are using
document classification

* Announcements: press briefings on Mon and Tues before release on Weds;
Italo and Mike to plan for those. Have a 5 - 8 slide presentation to
show in 15 minutes, followed by Q+A

* Also write personalised pitches to specific journalists, inviting them
to interview us or write articles

* Should include Asia in the process where possible - even if not for
5.2, start thinking about how to have a better relationship with Asian
journalists in future. Need to overcome language barrier

* Videos: English done, ideally will be localised for other languages.
Sophie to spread the word in NLPs to get translations / audio

This looks like a great content base both for general communication on
the 5.2 and for the "big" 5 features to be highlighted on the website.
I'd be interested in the standard for document classification as well
as the major new features so that we can define the top 5 features
ahead of the release.

The standard is from TSCP (Transglobal Secure Collaboration Program),
and there's more information on the LibreOffice implementation in this
blog entry: http://vmiklos.hu/blog/classification-toolbar.html

Great videos!

Thanks! Hopefully we'll have versions in other languages before the
release of 5.2 as well.

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 5.2 New Feature videos ready for translations

2016-07-20 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

The videos are available on a YouTube playlist via this handy short URL:
http://tdf.io/52vids

NOTE: They are unlisted at the moment, so please don't share the link
around until release day (Wed 3 August). I'm posting it here for anyone
who wants to contribute translations and audio in other languages. The
scripts are here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/5.2_New_Features_Script

If anyone wants to contribute translations there, that would be awesome!
Even better would be audio recordings, if possible. Some tips:

* A dedicated microphone is better than a built-in laptop one. Decent
USB mics are around €15-20 (check the reviews)
* Try to avoid speaking directly into the mic; speak slightly to the
side to avoid "pop" noises (or get a pop guard)
* Break up the audio into sections as in the scripts, and try to keep
the recordings around the same length, to make them easier to drop in

Thanks in advance for any contributions!

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Hello from Hong Kong

2016-06-27 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi Edwin,

Welcome, and great to have you on board! Spreading awareness about
LibreOffice around the world is indeed one of the goals of the Marketing
Project. Very soon I'll be making short demonstration videos about new
features in LibreOffice 5.2, so would you be interested in providing a
translation or voiceover for them in Cantonese or Mandarin? That would
be a huge help.

Other things you can do to help out:

* Translate our flyers:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Gallery_Flyers

* Organise a local event to demonstrate LibreOffice (may be worth
talking to a Linux User Group for ideas):
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Gallery_Flyers

* Join our next conference call (probably mid-July - we'll post about it
here): https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/ConfCalls

Thanks again!

Mike

the saving to remote server function will eventually include Dropbox.
The adoption of Dropbox has been impressive. Many SMEs/non-profits

replaced that with Dropbox.

Personally, I use LibreOffice because I use all three platforms -
Windows, Mac and Linux.

I believe there are three main segments (personal/SMEs) that LO
targets:

1. Freedom lovers or OSS fans
2. Cost conscious users
3. Power users - such as version control, which does not exist in
local MS Office files, unless you save the document to the cloud on
Office 365 or a SharePoint server.

Each segment will require a different marketing approach/message.

Thank you,

If anyone wants to add translations for other languages, that would be

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 5.2 New Features videos: scripts

2016-06-29 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

With LibreOffice 5.2 coming up in early August, I'm going to start work
on the New Features videos. This time we will have four videos: a
general one containing changes that affect all components in the suite,
followed by separate videos for Writer, Calc and Impress.

All feedback welcome! And once we're all happy with the script, if
anyone wants to start work on translations into other languages, that
would be really appreciated as well.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: GENERAL

In LibreOffice 5.2, many new features have been added which can be used
in all components of the suite.

New drawing tools are available, including filled curves, polygons and
freeform lines.

For improved security, multiple signature descriptions are now
supported, along with import and export of signatures from OOXML files.

In addition, documents can be classified according to TSCP standards, to
make sure only the right people can read them.

When printing a document, Print to File is now available in the list of
printers.

If you use Google Drive for storage, two-factor authentication support
has been included.

Finally, it's now possible to customise most of the context menus, for
even greater control of the interface.

See our other videos for new features in Writer, Calc and Impress.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: WRITER

LibreOffice 5.2 brings several improvements and updates to Writer, the
word processor.

A single toolbar mode has been added, to save screen space on
low-resolution devices.

It's now possible to show and hide the track changes toolbar via a
button.

In the Cross References view, a new filter helps you to narrow down
selections quickly.

The bookmarks dialog has been redesigned to be easier to use.

Finally, the Save toolbar button includes a quick Save as Template
option, so you don't have to go through the menu.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: CALC

In LibreOffice 5.2, Calc has been enhanced with new features to help you
work smarter with spreadsheets.

New functions have been added, along with extensive tooltips that
describe what a function does as you type it.

It's now possible to quickly freeze the first column or row of a sheet
via the toolbar or context menu.

Multiple status bar functions can be active at the same time, to provide
a quick overview of your data.

The currency toolbar icon now includes a drop-down menu to quickly
choose the currency you want to use.

A single toolbar mode has been added that contains the most-used
operations, to save on screen space.

And finally, when removing the border from selected cells, you can also
choose to remove the border from adjacent cells as well.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: IMPRESS

LibreOffice 5.2 includes several updates to Impress, to help you create
and manage presentations more efficiently.

When working with custom animations, you can now quickly add an effect
to an element via the sidebar, instead of using a separate dialog box.

The list of effects in the sidebar now includes a description of the
effect, along with the element name.

In the properties sidebar, a new Slide Background panel lets you quickly
change the format, orientation and background image of a slide.

Finally, a new toolbar button has been added to quickly show or hide the
drawing tools.

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice merchandise shop - slogan ideas?

2017-02-21 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

As you may know, we have a shop with LibreOffice merchandise (phone
covers, mugs, T-shirts etc.) here:

https://shop.spreadshirt.de/documentfoundation/

We added some new items a while back, but the range on Spreadshirt is
fairly limited. So I was thinking: how about refreshing the items on
there with more than just the word "LibreOffice" and a logo? How about
actually having a message or slogan printed on the items?

For instance:

* Liberate your documents / data
* Your documents, your freedom
* Take back control

...or something like that. It might make the T-shirts and mugs a bit
flashier and more exciting! Does anyone else have slogan ideas (or
indeed any other ways we could "spice up" the shop)?

Thanks!

2016-09-26 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

Just a note that this is coming up:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice#The_Document_Foundation_and_LibreOffice

We'll write a blog post and spread the word on social media, so if you
can help by retweeting and liking, that's be great! Also, if you are
active in a non-English-speaking country, it would be awesome if you
could spread the word about 6 years of LibreOffice as well.

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 5.3 New Features video scripts

Some people have been awesomely quick to provide translations, but
because the English text may still change, it's best to wait I think.
Next week, when the English text is final, I will post on the l10n list
requesting translations.

Thanks!

Hopefully the "migration protocol" at

something else together.

And please let us know how the presentation goes! It's always great to

Yes, that makes sense to me.

That would be great -- although I've been investigating this and it
doesn't look possible, at least without a lot of work. We can get the
calendar data in .ics format, but I haven't found a MediaWiki method or
extension to process the content.

If anyone else has any ideas, let me know...

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice events on the wiki - cleaning up duplicated content?

2017-08-10 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

Many of you will have seen this page:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Events

There's a lot of information that's duplicated in both the calendar and
the wiki page (ie the events list underneath). I think it'd make more
sense to just have the calendar, and all events information in there.
What do others think? Is it important to have the separate wiki pages?

(On a similar note, we want to make the calendar embedded into the wiki
and LO website, rather than just via a link. This is a limitation with
Nextcloud, but should be fixed in the next release of the calendar.)

So if I understand correctly, you would like to upload photos from your
event for others to use and share, yes? If so, we have a public upload
folder here:

https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/IBzR7FY57wH0jpL

Just upload your photos there and then email
me...@documentfoundation.org with the details (when and where they were
taken), and we can then use them in future marketing materials such as
the Annual Report.

If that's not what you meant and need help with something else, just let

[libreoffice-marketing] Linuxing in London meetup: special LibreOffice event option?

2017-07-19 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

There's a monthly Linux and open source meetup in London, that often
gets around 100 (or more) attendees:

https://www.meetup.com/Linuxing-In-London/

The organisers are interested in having a meetup that focuses on
LibreOffice. Is anyone in/around the London area interested in getting
involved?

We have various ready-made presentations (about TDF, LibreOffice, ODF,
migrations etc.) that could be useful:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material#Presentations

And of course we can help with other materials as well.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice merchandise shop - slogan ideas?

Hi everyone,

I'm bringing this topic back up again in case there are any more ideas.
To recap, we want to update our merchandise shop so that the products
have a slogan, and not just a logo. Let's choose a slogan!

My proposals:

1. Take back control
2. Powerful, creative, open
3. Freedom meets creativity

Let me know which one you like best (or if none of them, feel free to
suggest another one!)

[libreoffice-marketing] Sample documents showing off LibreOffice features

2017-12-08 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

I'd like to build up a collection of sample ODF documents that really
show off the versatility of LibreOffice. This could be complex Writer
documents, or spreadsheets doing awesome things, or smart-looking
presentations.

These would be useful for marketing (making screenshots and videos) and
showing potential users what the suite is capable of.

So I'm putting this call out for docs! If you have something you want to
share, and are happy for it to be public and Creative Commons BY-SA,
please email it to me. I'll then organise what I receive and set up a
wiki page for them.

Thanks!

[libreoffice-marketing] Websites we can use to bring in new contributors

Hi everyone,

As you know, when marketing LibreOffice we're not just spreading the
word about the software, but the community too! And we try to get new
people involved. I've come across a few websites that we could use for
this -- I haven't investigated further yet, but maybe someone on the
list has some experiences with them...

* https://yourfirstpr.github.io
* https://www.codetriage.com
* https://up-for-grabs.net

For the final one, we could link to some of the tutorials that were on
the design blog, eg:

Thanks for your offer of help -- it's great when people promote
LibreOffice in countries around the world. Regarding marketing in the
French language, please see here:

There is also a mailing list in French, for discussions about

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice "dark mode" (for use at night)

2018-01-04 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

I saw this discussion on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/Ricardeano/status/948198179467612161

(Click the "4 more replies" link to unfold the whole thread.) In short,
in LibreOffice you can go to Tools > Options > Application Colors and
change "Document background" from white to black, or another darker
colour, to make it easier to work with in low-light situations. (It only
changes the interface, but not how documents are printed.)

It looks like MS Office had that feature, but it was removed. I've seen
other people talking about it, though, and finding it useful. Maybe this
is something we should talk about? I was thinking of making a video
showing how to enable it, possibly embedded into a blog post with
screenshots and instructions.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, and yes, we agree -- we should talk more, in as many places as
possible, about LibreOffice! You may have seen the various things the
marketing community is working on in this respect: videos,
presentations, printed materials (eg flyers and stickers), interviews
with local media and so forth. If you think there's anything we're
missing, let us know!

For instance, we have many videos targeted at end-users of LibreOffice,
but I'd like to make one focused on enterprises at some point, talking
about document compatibility, long-term support (from certified
developers), migration protocols, advanced features such as TSCP
classification etc.

By the way, if you happen to be a German speaker (I'm assuming from your
name) and want to get more involved in the community, we're organising
Community-Treffen in Hamburg from 6 - 8 April:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/DE/Community-Treffen2018

I know it's quite far for people living in southern DE (I'm in Munich)
or CH/AT, but it should be a good event.

Cheers,
Mike

So you mean, create some banners or similar images that LibreOffice
users can put on their websites, and link back to us? I can understand
offering those, and I've seen other open source projects offer the same.

But just to clarify about the update page -- are you suggesting that's
where we offer these banners? For example, "Love LibreOffice? Put this
banner on your site and share the love!" or something like that?

We could use sticker designs as a basis:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material#Stickers_.28designs_for.29

Of course, if you want to create some draft designs to share with the
community and see how they work, feel free to go ahead and try :-)

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Would like to "Get Involved"

2018-01-04 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Glen,

Thanks for your offer of help, and welcome to the LibreOffice community!
We're currently in a busy period, leading up to the release of
LibreOffice 6.0 later in the month (or early February), but there's
still plenty to do. And with your background and experience, I'm sure
you can help us in many ways!

Our marketing efforts are generally focused on two things:

1) Making end users aware of LibreOffice
2) Getting people to join the community as active contributors

For the former, we've made some end user-oriented videos like this, as
you may have seen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KC0ZdcA6s8

We also make videos showing off new features in each release. One idea
that has been floating around (that you may be interested in) is a video
similar to the one linked above, but focused on enterprises. It would
talk about enterprise features, interoperability, migrations, deployment
methods, and commercial support options. If you're interested in the
idea (good voice overs are always very welcome!) just let me know and we
can discuss it further.

Similarly, we'd like to make a video for the Play Store, showing off the
Android version. In terms of other marketing materials, we have these
flyer designs which could be updated or redesigned:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Gallery_Flyers

There are some other materials here as well (the page is a bit cluttered
as the project has grown over the years):

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material

I don't know much about AdWords, but maybe you could help us there;
Italo Vignoli, who has been doing marketing for LibreOffice and
OpenOffice.org for many years, is in charge of our AdWords account I
believe. So maybe he can add some thoughts...

Anyway, I hope some of those ideas are interesting for you! And as with
all things open source, if you find something missing or something else
we could improve, feel free to dive in and work on it.

Thanks again for your help!

Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 6.1 release day plans: website updates

2018-08-03 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

So LibreOffice 6.1 is scheduled for release on Wednesday August 8. There
are some things I plan to update on the website, namely:

* https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ (see below)
* https://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/

Anything else I'm missing? (Cloph will update the download page itself.)
For the "New features" page, my proposed text is:

Great new features developed by our community

LibreOffice 6.1 includes two fresh new icon themes: Colibre, which is
now the default on Windows, and Karasa Jaga. In addition, image handling
has been improved, making the software faster and more responsive, while
new fill gradients, help files and interface translations make this the
best LibreOffice ever.

Word processing at the next level

Writer's EPUB export filter has been improved, helping you to create
e-books from your documents. In the header and footer menus, new options
let you quickly add page numbers and page counts, while new chapter
numbering styles, which spell out cardinal and ordinal numbers, are now
available. Finally, it's now possible to generate a signature line using
Insert > Signature Line.

Take your spreadsheets further

In Calc, images that are anchored to cells can now be sorted. In
addition, there are now three anchor types: to a cell, as usual; to a
cell with resizing when the cell size changes; and to a page. When
linking a sheet to external data, CSV files can now be used as data
sources. And as an extra bonus, the options dialog lets you customise
cell highlight colours.

Pristine presentations and drawings

In Impress and Draw, new drawing styles have been added, while existing
ones have been cleaned up. Also, the menu in Draw was reorganised to be
more intuitive, and a new Page menu was added.

LibreOffice Online - your office suite, anywhere

In LibreOffice Online, the cloud-based version of the suite, many new
dialog boxes have been added, including spelling and grammar, cell
formatting and area fill. In Calc, it's now possible to collapse or
expand any group of columns or rows with a single click. Finally,
performance and security has been improved as well.

Further details

For a full list of new features in LibreOffice 6.1, see our release notes.

Sure, that's would be great! But then we need an image that can convey
that we're a free office suite, made by a community (that people can
join), compatible, flexible, and a viable alternative to other closed,
propriety products. I can't think of how to do that in just an image,
but I'm not really a designer so I'm probably missing something. If you
have any suggestions for an image that expresses all that, let's try
it :-)

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] New header image for social media channels

We previously just had the 3D icons, with no message at all. This newer
design attempts to provide a bit more information straight away:

* What it is (free office suite)
* Who makes it (a community)
* That anyone can get involved

So people who've never come across LibreOffice before get immediate
information about what it is, without having to find the specific box on
the social media page that provides more information (which sometimes
requires a click to expand).

So I think it's better than just icons with no meaning at all. Of
course, in the future we can experiment with other designs. We could do
the cliched "smiling people sitting in an office" but I think people
don't pay any attention to that.

We can also use group photos from LibOCon (we still have that on the
Google+ page, as we have a much more technically minded community there,
so I think it's especially important to emphasise the project). But for
general awareness spreading I think we need to make it absolutely clear,
from the first second, what LibreOffice is...

Cheers,
Mike

Ooh, I like "Be a part of it" -- that's really positive. I still think
we need to say what we are at the beginning, with no ambiguity, but
there's a design with "Be a part of it" included:

But then "Free office suite, made by a community, for you to join"
doesn't express why either... It just says that you can do it. We could
try "Free office suite, made by a community – join us and help to
improve it" but then we go back to much longer text...

[libreoffice-marketing] Social media ideas for LibreOffice 6.1 release announcement

2018-08-06 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

If all goes to plan, LibreOffice 6.1 will be released on Wednesday.
Social media is an important way to spread the word, of course -- for
the LO 6.0 release, our announcement tweet had over 100,000 impressions:

https://twitter.com/libreoffice/status/958658057558519809

The main things we want to express in the tweet are: what's new (ie why
people should be excited), that it's made by a community (to encourage
people to get involved), and where to read more/download it. I've put
two ideas for the tweet below, but more feedback is welcome :-) We can
expand on these for the Google+, Facebook etc. posts as well...

LibreOffice 6.1 is here, and it's packed with new features, user
interface improvements, and performance boosts. A big thanks to our
community for making it happen! Learn all about the new features and
download it now: LINK #anewlibreoffice

It's here! LibreOffice 6.1 is now available – it's the fastest, most
beautiful and most feature-rich version we've ever made. Discover the
great new features and download it for free: LINK – and a huge thanks to
our community for making it happen! #anewlibreoffice

Thanks Andreas. Regarding the movie, it is indeed ready to go, but I
think it's better in a separate tweet. (Otherwise the first tweet will
have two distinct links, which doesn't work very well. And the press
release that we link to will include the video anyway.)

So like with LO 6.0, the plan for the day is:

* Tweet about the release the moment it's available

* Two hours later, tweet a direct link to the new features video

* Two hours after that, start tweeting about specific new features in
this release, with screenshots

[libreoffice-marketing] New header image for social media channels

2018-08-13 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

Currently the header image for our Twitter and Facebook pages looks like
this:

https://i.imgur.com/TKEKv69.jpg

Recently, Andreas Kainz from the design community updated the icons for
the various components of LibreOffice, as shown here:

https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/08/WhatsNewFig4a.png

So based on them, I've created a new header image, which also adds a bit
of information about the software using our familiar tagline, and
encourages people to get involved:

https://i.imgur.com/mY2essw.png

What do you think? We could also translate it for social media on native
language projects...

I don't think so, as the pages in question (Twitter and Facebook)
already have "LibreOffice" prominently displayed on the left.

Meanwhile, here are some updated versions based on the feedback from
this list, and Andreas. Firstly with shorter text and a soft gradient
background:

Then the same, but with a grey shadow under the text:

Personally I prefer the first... Any other opinions?

That's what we can use the individual tweets and posts for, to provide
specifics. Given the limited space in the banner, I think we shouldn't
try to do too much and make it cluttered. With the current wording, we
express:

1) What it is
2) Who makes it
3) That people CAN join in (saving the HOW for individual posts)

Here's another version with grey text, as suggested by Andreas. I think
it looks a bit better than the green text:

it doesn't really express any benefits. So I've come up with a couple of
alternatives, shown in the mock-ups here:

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 6.1 New Features video: draft script

2018-07-09 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

So I'm working on a video to showcase the new features in the upcoming
release. The draft script is below -- all feedback welcome! This time,
I'll put credits (ie who created the new features) directly alongside
them in the video, rather than at the end...

LibreOffice 6.1 introduces many powerful new features, and improves
existing ones.

General

A new icon theme, Colibre, has been added and is the default on Windows.

Image handling has been improved, so documents with many images will
load and display more smoothly.

It's now possible to sign ODF documents with ECDSA keys on Linux and
macOS. [Lock]

For shapes and backgrounds, a new set of fill gradients is now available
[https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Gradients-61.png], while the
background images dialog has been redesigned to be easier to use.

The online help system has been extended with example files, to help you
see how features in the suite work.

It's now even easier to customize toolbars and menus, thanks to the new
gear button in the Customize dialog.

The experimental Notebookbar user interface design has been updated with
better layouts and icons.

And thanks to our worldwide community, the user interface has been
translated into additional languages, while dictionaries and
auto-correct tools have been improved for many languages as well
[spinning world]

Writer

In the header and footer menus, new options let you quickly add page
numbers and page counts.

The EPUB export feature has been improved, and gives you more options
for customising metadata.

It's now possible to generate a signature line using Insert > Signature
Line. [https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Gen-sig-line.png]

New chapter numbering styles, which spell out cardinal and ordinal
numbers, are now available.

Finally, performance when converting documents to XHTML has been greatly
improved. [https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Odt-xhtml-perf.png]

Calc

In Calc, the word processor, images that are anchored to cells can now
be sorted. [https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Calc-image-sort.gif]

In addition, there are now three anchor types: to a cell, as usual; to a
cell with resizing when the cell size changes; and to a page.

The options dialog lets you customise cell highlight colours.

When you're merging cells, the dialog box now shows a graphical
depiction of the process in advance.

When linking a sheet to external data, CSV files can now be used as data
sources.

Parallel formula compiling on the CPU is now supported, for a
significant performance boost.

Impress, Draw and Base

New drawing styles have been added, while existing ones have been
cleaned up. [https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:DrawingStyles.png]

The menu in Draw was reorganised to be more intuitive, and a new Page
menu was added.

In Base, the embedded Firebird engine is now available by default.
Embedded HSQLDB is deprecated, although it's still available in this
release, and a migration assistant helps you to switch between the two
engines.

LibreOffice Online

In LibreOffice Online, the cloud-based version of the suite, many new
dialog boxes have been added, including spelling and grammar
[https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:SpellingDialog.png], cell
formatting
[https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:FormatCellDialog.png], and
area fill [https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:AreaDialog.png].

In Calc, it's now possible to collapse or expand any group of columns or
rows with a simple click.

Finally, performance and security has been improved as well, making
LibreOffice Online a great complement to the desktop version of the suite.

But there's more to come - help us with LibreOffice 6.2!

We're already working on the next release - join our worldwide
community, help to add and test new features - they're made by people
like you! etc.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Want to Get Involved

2018-04-19 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Biraj,

Thanks for your interest in marketing! We have some materials that could
be translated into local languages. For instance, we have a "Join the
community" video with lots of subtitles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir6KiKfnWCw

You could add some subtitle translations here in a local language, and
then I'll add them to the video:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/Join_the_LibreOffice_community_script

Same for "This is LibreOffice":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KC0ZdcA6s8

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/This_is_LibreOffice_script

And then some flyers that can be translated, printed and handed out at
events (I plan to update the designs when I have time):

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Gallery_Flyers

And finally, we have lots of "Love LibreOffice" stickers which are
always popular, so if you want some to give out at events, just let me
know :-)

Cheers,
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] Video for LibreOffice Viewer on the Play Store - draft script

2018-02-26 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

As you probably know, we have a version of LibreOffice for Android,
called LibreOffice Viewer:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.documentfoundation.libreoffice=en

A new version has been released recently, thanks to our community of
developers and volunteers, and I'd like to make a video for the Google
Play listing. Recommendations from the Android developer website:

"Create a video of your app in action to show off the app's main
features, either by using screen capture software and filming a physical
device running the app. Try to keep the video concise; aim for a run
time of somewhere between 30 and 120 seconds, and highlight the most
important or compelling features first."

I'd go for something short, with a voiceover and quiet music track in
the background. My draft outline for the script:

* (LibreOffice logo) LibreOffice is the most popular free and open
source office suite – and now it's available for your smartphone or tablet.
* (Animation of scrolling through a document) With LibreOffice Viewer,
you can access your documents, spreadsheets and presentations in many
formats, including Open Document and Office Open XML.
* (Animation of spreadsheet) LibreOffice Viewer is based on the the same
engine as the desktop application, for maximum consistency across platforms.
* (Animation of editing mode) In addition, an experimental editing
option is available, so you can update your documents on the go.
* (Picture of the icon) So try it today! Download it, use it, and give
our community feedback to help us improve it!

What does everyone think? Anything else we should mention or focus on?
Should we talk about the experimental editing mode at all, or make a
more prominent request for bug reports?

Thanks!
Mike

Two things we could discuss:

* LibreOffice Viewer promo video for Google Play (as mentioned on this
list): what we should include, how long it should be, other ideas

* Stickers: we want to place another order soon, so what do our
marketing communities (especially NLPs) need? Any new ideas?

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] An info graphic

2018-10-19 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Drew,

Many thanks for that! As Daniel mentioned, that's something we made
earlier this year, already in English:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2018/09/11/four-ways-you-can-make-libreoffice-even-better/

Not sure why the Spanish version appears to date from 2016, but maybe
some kind of date glitch on the server... If you have any other ideas
for infographics based on that design, feel free to try them out :-)

Cheers,
Mike

2018-10-22 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Oyeibo,

Welcome to the community! I'm Mike, working in Marketing for TDF, and
doing some community outreach to help the project to grow (along with
the software itself).

Thanks very much for your help with promoting LibreOffice and spreading
the word. At the moment I'm working on a map of LibreOffice community
members, which links to interviews that I've done:

http://newdesign.libreoffice.org/contributor_map.html

As you can see, we have some rather large gaps in north America, Africa,
parts of Asia etc. So it'd be great to show that we have LibreOffice
supporters there. If you have a spare 20 minutes, could I send you a few
questions please, to put up a short interview about your involvement
with LibreOffice?

That would be awesome, but no worries if you're super busy though!

Cheers,
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] Minutes from Marketing Conference Call, 18 October 2018

2018-10-18 Thread Mike Saunders
Present:

* Franklin Weng
* Sophie Gautier
* Mike Saunders
* Redon Skikuli
* Amhed Haris
* Jona Azizaj
* Sreekanth V K
* Italo Vignoli
* Sam Tuke
* Foad Vafaei

1. "What can I do for LibreOffice" site: help people to understand in
just a few clicks, how they can contribute. Need to get the design team
involved, make it available for translations, build a tree for the
information. Code here: https://github.com/jdm/asknot. AIs: Mike to find
out about domain, and talk to various sub-projects about questions to
use; Redon to work on the first tree map.

2. Increased use of social media: work on more focused Twitter
campaigns, and encourage native language communities to make their own
social media accounts. Become more active on Instagram and LinkedIn -
but do in a coordinated way.

3. Next Month of LibreOffice, coming up in November: Focus especially on
bringing in new contributors. Consider expanding data sources, and
linking to another event (eg a Reddit "Ask us Anything").

4. Open Badges idea: Mike and Sophie catching up with various jobs after
LibOCon, but will work on it soon. Redon offers to help out as well.

5. Sreekanth's topic: doing more in Indian community; converting
interested people into community members. Challenge with lots of
different languages. Organise a regular call and try to build a
community there, make it a focus for aggregation in 2019. Consider
funding someone to travel to India to help out, and a mini conference
(eg in Pune).

[libreoffice-marketing] Linux Magazine special on LibreOffice: looking for Draw and Base tutorial writers

2018-10-23 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-magazine.com) is planning to do a
special edition all about LibreOffice. We at TDF will contribute a few
articles, but the publisher is also looking for people to write sections on:

* Draw
* Base

These will be 4 - 6 pages, showing the main features and then looking at
various tips and tricks to get the most out of them. If you're
interested in writing an article, contact bosb...@linuxnewmedia.com to
discuss the idea, deadlines and payment in more detail!

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2018-10-31 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Nigel,

Welcome to the community, and thanks for providing some background on
what you've been involved with! I'm Mike, originally from Cumbria but
now living in Munich, and have been working at The Document Foundation
for a few years. I work with Italo Vignoli and other community members
on marketing materials, videos, events, social media, community outreach
and so forth.

Yes, you're right that LibreOffice is an easier "sell" than Linux as it
doesn't require changing a whole underlying system. Still, I find that
some people are sceptical about free things. On social media, we often
get questions like "How does LibreOffice compare to X?" or "How well
will LibreOffice work with my files?" -- To which I always respond, why
not just try it and see... You have nothing to lose :-)

If you're especially interested in marketing Linux in written form, we
in the community have often talked about creating articles about
LibreOffice features, that websites and magazines can then use as a
quick source of content. It could be a good way to spread the word, and
highlight some of the many things that LibreOffice does better than the
competition.

What do you think? Feel free to join our next marketing call, or indeed
we could have a chat on the phone at some point if you like.

Cheers!
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] LibrePlanet conference in Boston, USA - session proposals (deadline November 9)

2018-11-02 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

We've been informed that the Free Software Foundation's annual
LibrePlanet conference (https://libreplanet.org) will be held March 23rd
and 24th, 2019, in the greater Boston area, USA. If anyone from the
LibreOffice community is nearby and wants to attend and give a talk
about the project, here's some info:

"You can get a sense of the types of sessions we're looking for on the
Call for Sessions page <https://my.fsf.org/lp-call-for-sessions>, and
the media page from last year's conference
<https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/tag/libreplanet-2018-video/>.
The deadline for session proposals is Friday, November 9, 2018 at 10:00
EDT (14:00 UTC). If you have questions about the proposal submission
process, contact the LibrePlanet team at campai...@fsf.org."

We have some sample presentations here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material#Presentations

Most people at an FSF event will already know LibreOffice rather well,
however, so it might be good to talk about the importance of free
software in our community, and how to contribute!

Great to see things moving with this. I've added various extra ideas and
links, along with some ways to categorise them (what skills are
required, or how much time). What do you think?

There's still the Design and Translations sections, so I'll leave those

tasks for those as well.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] [libo-marketing-priv] Marketing Conference Call

2018-11-06 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

I can't join the call this week as I'm doing training (about content
marketing). But I can say: yesterday we had over 1,000 visits to the
"Get involved" page from the infobar in LibreOffice 6.1.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: Notebookbar out of Experimental

2018-11-09 Thread Mike Saunders
First, hello Nige and welcome to the community :-)

On the topic of the Notebookbar being default, I personally think that's
not something we should do on the first release after making it
non-experimental. If anything, we could have it available to everyone in
6.2, 6.3 and 6.4, then consider it as default for 7.0...

That would be good, but it MUST be easy to switch between them. If
someone chooses the Notebookbar but then wants to go back to the
"classic" interface, it must be extremely obvious. Otherwise the amount
of complaints we'll get on social media, info@ and download@ will go
through the roof :-)

Also, a big thanks as always to Andreas K for working on this.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Marketing Conference Call - POSTPONED

2018-10-11 Thread Mike Saunders
CALL IS POSTPONED

Hello,

I'm afraid we have to postpone the call by a week (a few of us who
wanted to attend have come down with colds, so we can't participate very
effectively).

The marketing call will now take place:

* Thursday 18 October, 14:30 CET

Apologies for any inconvenience!

Mike
