- Lame does not support outputting to a wav file with mp3
compression (a mp3 with wav header). Since these files
are needed for programs like virtualdub (for combining
video and audio), this feature would make lame even more
complete.
Don't use LAME - use CDEx with its LAME plugin:
I have a couple of MP3s which I encoded with LAME a long time ago. I made
the mistake of putting them on a Zip disk. Now they've got errors in them
which they didn't have in the first place, but Nero 4 is refusing to put
them on CD. Does anyone know if there's a utility anywhere out there which
Windows 2000 allows for avi files over 2GB. I was experiencing the same
problem until I switched.
It doesn't support original format AVIs over 2 Gb. The problem is with the
original AVI format specification which allowed a maximum size of 2 Gb. The
problem is that some programmes write files
Well, if you want to stay under win95/98, you can use FlaskMpeg to backup
your data, as it includes a built-in mpeg-2 decoder and got an avi output
plugin. It helped me a lot, as I now don't have to decompress first in a
big
wav before re-encoding.
The only slight problem is that the Windows
I'm currently making quite a few AVIs and have had to use a kind of kludge
to get LAME MP3s working for the audio segment of the AVIs - I have to use
VirtualDub to extract the uncompressed sound track to a WAV file then CDEx's
LAME plugin to compress that WAV file to a WAV file containing MP3
I think that you're not alone in this case. Let me guess: you're encoding
large AVIs from a video source which is 720pixels wide, and your files are
about 1H30 to 2H longs ;-) ?
Where would you get a silly idea like that ;-D
At first it would be nice to have a --l3wav option in lame
Gabriel, get a program called "wavemp3", just do a search on google.com.
It
will convert any mp3 into an mp3 compressed wav file, by just adding a
header, no reencoding necessary.
I can do that already with CDEx but that integrates the LAME compression as
well so I can go straight from a PCM
Just read Mr. Maier's email. I would also like to know
when stereo recordings started being used. Is there an
online source that gives a summary of recording technology history?
I know that the first film ever released in Stereo was in 1940.
Space is not super critical. The mp3s will be put
Erm, something screwy is happening to all my mail from this list. Here's a
sample. Just started happening about 2-3 hours ago! Any ideas on what's
going on?

i suppose you should have also a RIFF WAVE header in the file...
some wav/mp3 encoder/ripper do this
As previously mentioned, CDEx ( http://www.cdex.n3.net/ ) can do
this (with LAME support, no less) either from an MP3 or WAV.

As you probably know, the old VBR routine tries to
get an acceptable quantization at different bit
constraints, resulting in something like a binary
search for the optimal bit amount needed.
While we're on the subject of VBR, I have one
question about LAME: why does it only support such

Hi,
The author of CoolPlayer (free,win32) is considering to put in mpg123
instead of the xaudio decoder. http://www.daansystems.com/coolplayer/
The only reason that holds him back is that the GPL.txt says he should
include his source code with the program.
Actually, I believe that the GPL
May I take it from these e-mails that most builds of LAME do not

MMX enhancements? If that is the case, where can I find a build that
does
include MMX (or even 3D Now!) enhancements?

Speaking of Vorbis, when (if) will Vorbis support (with no extra
downloads no
extra hassle) be built into the downloadable source code?

Any idea how I get LAME to compile with Vorbis support?

In http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~djmrob/mp3decoders/index.html
there's a comparison of mp3 decoders. Lame is one of the three that
passed
the test (the other two are Winamp 2.22 and Ultra Player). But mpg123
is
not tested. What about it? Does anyone know any decoding problem with
it?
There's not a part of this I don't disagree with. Even on a very decent
Hi-Fi and stereo speakers, I find it hard to find many of these
artifacts people keep
talking about. On a £20 pair of headphones, almost everything sounds
marvellous, though any encoding artifacts can be heard well. Another
