Re: [NTG-context] Ligatures in EB Garamond
Hi Georg, thank you very much for this insight. I really like the EB Garamond. It's a wonderful typeface for reading. I used it to typeset books with more than 500 pages together with lualatex and the selnolig package which produced good results with no effort. I was disappointed to learn that there is no package like selnolig for ConTeXt but the book I am now typesetting is only 120 pages long and I'll switch ligatures off manually with the ZWNJ replacement. (The ConTeXt notation is a bit uncomfortable, but as I only have to use it once...) I only found one issue with ZWNJ. It splits up the words so that they are not found by the search. If ZWNJ is the right way to do it, I'll start a tiny project on Github with a replacement file. First time I hear about the new keyboard layout. I think I want my T2 keyboard now! ;-) juh Am 18.01.2016 um 23:38 schrieb Georg Duffner: > Hi Jan, hi Hans, > > This is the developer of EB Garamond. Re: [NTG-context] Ligatures in EB Garamond
Hi Jan, hi Hans, This is the developer of EB Garamond. I’m only now and then reading this list so I only learnt about your troubles now. The way the ligatures are composed simplifies the creation of more ligatures after the same scheme while not blowing up the font by having to create one glyph per ligature combination but only one per component. In fact, it’s not just kerning, like Hans said, but one-by-one glyph substitutions. It might be seen as inconsistency that one feature can be executed in different ways. I know of that problem but it’s not that inconsistent at user level if you use the methods intended by unicode and opentype to deal with breaking up ligatures. The symbol ZWNJ (zero width non joiner) is exactly meant to do this so if you insert it, you should get what you want. What’s more, by inserting ZWNJ you should also be able to benefit from kerning between the non ligated f and the following letter or from contextual alternate forms that fit better than the long bowed f, if you want that. With EB Garamond, this should be true for both, engines that handle ZWNJ correctly or not. By the way, the newly standardized German keyboard layout even has the ZWNJ on it and the norm recommends its use to prevent ligation. Shall I file a bugreport for this issue? What would be the right words: please provide real ligature glyphs instead of composed ones? EB Garamond is a free font also in the sense free of charge. But what can I expect when I buy a commercial font? I would be quite annoyed when I buy a font which does not provide the features in a way that I can use them in ConTeXt. [NTG-context] creating multirow curly brace in tables to symbolize row span
List: I'm trying to create a table with this effect: Parcel |Area ⎧ | 1 acre trees parcel 1 ⎨ | 2 acre vines ⎩ | 3 acre open ⎧ | 5 acre trees parcel 2 ⎨ | 6 acre vines ⎩ | 4 acre open In other words, I would like a big curly bracket with leftwards point spanning three table rows to tell the reader that the leftmost column's entries apply to a three-row span in the next column (a style often seen in tables in older books). I've tried, probably naively, the following approach, using the unicode symbols for the bracket pieces and alternatively using math-mode symbols found in http://meeting.contextgarden.net/2011/talks/day3_05_ulrik_opentype/Samples/unimath-symbols.pdf Every symbol defined by unicode-math. The symbols are recognized in neither form, unfortunately. Any suggestions on how I can either make these symbols render, or a different approach to achieve my goal? It is not really possible to classify math symbols from the the mathematical point of view, as every author in principle use their own notation. when we have a symbol in the input (can be a : but also something else) in some cases it is a binary but in other cases a relation or whatever Right. When TeX was written, there was only ASCII, so Knuth set “:” to the ratio binary operator, and the function “:” to \colon. Now, when Unicode is available, it sets the ratio binary operator to ≔ COLON EQUALS U+2254, leaving : COLON U+003A open for other uses. So set the latter to \colon, and add a command \ratio for the former. this influences the spacing and the 'domain' (or dictionaries) group symbols so that we can assign the right properties entering a utf sequence representing 0x2236 still doesn't always prescribe what mathclass it is, 0x22A5 0x22C5 0x25B3 are examples of such dual face characters (this is actually more important in for instance xml input) I was thinking of just having the two, \colon and \ratio. Looking into some books before electronic typesetting, the spacing of the latter can vary widely: some do not use spaces at all. So a set might look {x:x a} instead of {x : x a} But that would be a typographical issue, rather than semantic. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

For example, instead having “:=“ in the input file and let Lua translate it, one can merely type it and let the text editor translate it ≔ COLON EQUALS U+2254. that is ok for some input sequences (this kind of input translation happens for accented characters and some math like negated symbols) but replacing = in the input is bad as it is only meaningful in math and not all input is math (and unicode lacks script/language tagging); keep in mind that 'verbatim' in tex really means verbatim and input translation contradicts that It will save a lot of programming time, at least on the ConTEXt project. :-) not really as that code is already in place for years; in this case it mainly boils down to adding some extra entries in the character database (and this code is simple compared to other code so not much to save here) Hans - Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | voip: 087 875 68 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl - ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Re: [NTG-context] itemize[n] and dejavu fonts
On Tue, 7 Apr 2015 13:37:54 +0200 Wolfgang Schuster schuster.wolfg...@gmail.com wrote: Can you show your output from the example and tell what you expect from the fit option. For example: \setupbodyfont [scola,10pt] \startitemize [n] ... yields a reasonable output: 10. X \setupbodyfont [dejavu,10pt] \startitemize [n] ... the output is ugly: 10.X where the period and the X almost touch. AND if one goes to 100 items, then result is 100.X where the 0 and the X overlap (the period is in the right foot of the X). Using the scola font, the result with 100 is similar to the result with 10 in dejavu, so going to a fourth digit would be just as horrible as with three digits and dejavu. \setupbodyfont [whatever] \startitemize[n,fit] yields 10.X with no spacing in all fonts, and this is pretty ugly unless one also specifies [distance=\spaceamount]. Perhaps this correct (with distance=, by default) as fit should then fit with no spacing. HOWEVER, \startitemize [n] with no other options should simply work correctly out of the box for all fonts and not give such horrible results. I understand now: the default is a fixed offset to the list body that works OK for small itemizations (i.e. one digit) with most fonts and more-or-less well with two digits, but not with dejavu. Choosing the option fit and setting a distance gives a reasonable result, so we cannot call this a bug, but the result by default is rather surprising. Notice that \startitemize[R] works poorly with even less than 10 items. May I suggest that the default spacing (i.e. the list setup) that is used be enlarged a little bit, as two digit numbered itemizations are not rare and dejavu is such a useful font. Indeed, this is obtained with the option broad. Indeed, in the manual, broad (and 2*broad) is used in such examples. Perhaps the fixed spacing that is presently tuned works well with simple symbol item lists and passably with single digit numbered lists, which probably explains why this is the default. Also, I suppose that there is some aesthetic value in having item lists take a fixed, uniform distance by default in a document which is why fit is not a default option. Thus, a design choice (or compromise). Moral: read the manual! [NTG-context] Adjusting vertical location of a margin figure
Dear all, in the user manuals I'm working with we'd like to put a graphic in the margin when the text includes a warning or other important information. I have found multiple ways of putting a graphic in the margin (see below), but none of them works perfectly. In some the graphic is placed to the baseline of the first row of the paragraph, in others it is placed lower down and in short paragraphs ends up by the next paragraph. What I want is a symbol in the margin aligned to the top of the paragraph. Is this possible? The graphic is always in the beginning of the paragraph, it doesn't appear in the middle. This is what I have this far: \setupwhitespace[medium] \starttext \inmargin{\externalfigure[warning]} \input tufte \inmargin{\externalfigure[warning]} Really short paragraph. \inleft{ \placefigure[none][]{} {\externalfigure[warning]} } \input tufte \placefigure[leftmargin,none]{}{\externalfigure[warning]} \input tufte \placefigure [inleft, none] {} {\externalfigure[warning]} \input tufte \placefigure [inleft, none] {} {\externalfigure[warning]} Really short paragraph. \stoptext Of course I have the option of making the symbols textheight, in which case \inmargin (aligning to baseline) would work. However, I'd rather keep them bigger if that is possible.
