Just forwarding a message that my friend in Scarsdale had a Barred Owl in her
yard the other night calling and flying around. It was probably going after
the rabbits running around her yard. She's had Great Horneds before but never
a Barred. Nice yard bird.

I'm glad to hear they are finally making those former dumps into a park. I
just hope they don't develop them to much as they are excellent for birds as

I had two Red-shouldered Hawks in the northern section of Van Cortlandt Park
near the Forest Ave./Lee Ave. intersection in Yonkers. This is right on the
border of Yonkers and the Bronx. They were about 100feet in from the street.

adult and immature Sandhill Cranes is wintering in Manville, Somerset Co., NJ,
along the Manville Causeway and is reliably visible to all. It is nice to see

Boy, after seeing the Macgillivray's in Highlands, NJ yesterday and seeing the
photos of this bird, I can see the similarities for sure. But the
MacGillivray's did not have those light edgings as Shai notes and seemed a
little brighter overall and the throat seemed different too. I'd lean

Nice sighting. It is very rare for around here to see so many in a flock, but
out West they are frequently seen in medium sized flocks sometimes much larger
usually at a feeding site such as a dead large mammal. I have personally seen
a flock of 80-100 in Unity, Maine, back in the mid 80's

It's very sad to hear the Corn Crake is dead, but not surprised at all. I
figured it would be hit by a car at some point. Just wish it had lasted a
little longer for more people to see. Oh well. It was a great bird for those

doesn't seem to have the gray typical of adults on the breast, throat, and
face. I'm also glad it's not being as secretive as they are supposed to be.

Well it sure was a good day to be a birder! Went to photograph the
Black-headed Gull at Orchard Beach this early pm and got a 100 or so great
shots of it in the lot. When I got home at about 12:30pm I saw a Corn Crake
was spotted on the Island so of course dropped everything and zoomed down
Also had a Red-shouldered Hawk.

How funny is it that after reading an article in the Science Times on tuesday
about mantises and hummingbirds getting caught by praying mantids that I'd find
a big female Chinese Mantid on my hummer feeders this am:-) Luckily the

I just had a Merlin go after some Blue Jays in a spruce in my back neighbors
yard. It went after them in the tree and then flew straight at me and past my
house heading west. Pretty cool, never seen one that close.

For the last week or two I've been having at least 5 maybe more Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds at my two feeders on my patio. I've never had so many. They are
mostly females and imm. females but a few are imm. males. I love seeing all

I had what I believe was a Mitred Parakeet flying north along the Croton
Aqueduct parallel to Hancock Ave. last weekend. I didn't get a look at it but
have heard them before and using sources on the net matched the calls to that
species. I've seen the NYC flock once in the Bronx at NYBG so

I just came home to a Common Raven sitting in the tree in my back yard croaking
up a storm. I didn't expect it to be sitting in my yard, usually they are
flying by. It was there for about 10 minutes until I guess the jays finally
scared it off.

You'd be right Mike. I used to work at the refuge when it was first formed and
did the checklist for it and Wallkill. They used to nest there many years ago,
but have not been seen there until recently and definitely not on territory.

I was at my friends home on Old Army Rd. this am and heard a Canada Warbler
singing down in their backyard which has a low moist area of trees and shrubs
and ground cover that is left to grow wild. It seems a little late for a
migrant going north and early for a southbound migrant. Don't know

Went to Bayard Cutting arboretum today with my buddy to look for the
Yellow-throated Warbler that has been reported there. Even with the windy
conditions it was very easy to find with its loud song in the trees across from
the right turn into the parking lot. Very nice bird. Also there were

I just had my first Ruby-throated Hummingbird of the year at my feeders within
a minute of refilling them! A gorgeous male in the sun, how beautiful.

I was up taking a walk at the Pete Seeger Park and adjacent Folk Music Center
which is next to the Beacon Metro North station and had a bedraggled female

found them they are probably semi captive since they are hanging out in an
atypical site. Many businesses place swans including tundras, whoopers and
