[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx- Goose Creek Marsh

2019-07-25 Thread Jack Rothman
Gerry McGee, Joe McManus, Saul Scheinbach, Chee Yong, Noa and Mayra Cruz, Laura
Juner and I, birded Goose Creek Marsh in Pelham Bay Park. The marsh is located
adjacent to the Split Rock Golf course.
We birded along the Split Rock horse trail and found the small opening through
the phragmites to the marsh. It is an uncomfortable place to walk and stand,
ankle twisting, wet, muddy, and very buggy. There is no shade. I definitely do
not recommend going there alone, since it is a hidden location.
The marsh provided us with the Virginia Rail and Saltmarsh Sparrow, our target
birds. There were more Marsh Wrens than we could count. Most of the other
species were found along the trail as we proceeded to the actual Spllt Rock,
which we viewed through the foliage from the trail.
Local legend says Anne Hutchison hid in this split rock while escaping from the
Siwanoy in 1643. However, this has been disputed.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx -Red-headed Woodpecker, warblers and shorebirds

2019-05-15 Thread Jack Rothman
Joe McManus and I led a group through Pelham Bay Park this morning. It was a
free walk sponsored by NYC Audubon.
We had a terrific morning, with some warblers coming in low and close. The
morning was capped off with an adult Red-headed Woodpecker on the main paved
path on Hunter Island, only a few minutes before we exited.
It was also nice see that some “Puddle Birds” are back in the flooded grassy
areas!

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2019-05-06 Thread Jack Rothman
Our regular Audubon walk went on in the rain. Our binoculars were swamped but
we managed 9 warbler species and 40 altogether before the rain soaked us.
Birds were low and close to the entrance to Hunter Island. The rain on the
binocular eyepieces made identification tough and I believe there were a few
more warbler species, including at least one Golden Wing but it was too
difficult to positively identify.
Thanks to John Sheridan and “Bronx” Brendan Keogh for their sharp eyes.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2019-05-02 Thread Jack Rothman
When I opened my front door to get my newspaper at about 8:00am, there was an
Ovenbird and a Magnolia Warbler in the tree just 15 feet away. In my yard was
another Ovenbird, so I knew we had some good movement into the park.

I rushed home from my appointment and began birding at about 10:30am. The light
was poor then, but the trees near Turtle Cove were full of warblers. There were
several Parulas, Black-throated Green, Yellow Warblers, many Yellow-rumps, a
Magnolia. In the same tree were both Orchard and Baltimore Oriole, Warbling
Vireos, Goldfinches. There were too many birds for this one birder to see and
ID all at once. Nearby, Greater Yellowlegs were in the puddles near Orchard
Beach along with a Solitary Sandpiper. House finches, Savannah, Song and
Chipping Sparrows were flitting on the grass. There were multiple Tree and
Northern Rough-wing swallows and a nearby Killdeer doing its wounded wing
routine.

I was thinking how there were probably 150 birders in Central Park this
morning, and I was likely only person birding the city’s largest park.

How many more species would be found here with some more birders?

Come visit!

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx, "The Puddles"

2018-08-10 Thread Jack Rothman
The puddles are again becoming active and the birding should improve as the
migration progresses. This morning there were more than 100 birds in a small
puddle in the SW corner of the Orchard Beach parking lot. They were a mix of
Semi-palmated Plovers and Semi-pal Sandpipers. Last season we had quite a few
interesting species including Red-necked Phalarope, Whimbrel, Western
Sandpiper, Stilt, Solitary, Pectoral and Baird’s Sandpiper.

Last year the asphalt was quite porous and broken. It was likely underground
water percolated to the surface, keeping the puddles full, even during a
stretch of dry weather. This probably kept whatever crustaceans that were
present alive in the water.

In the early fall, much to our dismay, they began resurfacing the lot with a
fresh few inches of asphalt. I thought this would be the end of our “puddle
birding.” Now water has accumulated in the uneven surface of the lot and has
reformed where the old puddles used to be. I’m guessing that nature wins out.
The ground is not solid there and the asphalt has sunk in the same places as
last year.

So even with the new non-porous “clean” asphalt, the birds are finding much
food. The water looks clear to me, but with 100 or so birds in a very small
puddle, obviously feeding, there must be something good to eat.

There is also a broken underground pipe that has been leaking for months. It is
located in the SW corner of the grassy oval that is alongside the road leading
to the main entrance of the beach. It’s easily seen because Parks Department
can’t cut the grass at this location, it’s too wet. A small muddy area is in
the middle of this mess and lots of birds have been landing here too. The Parks
administration told me they won’t repair the pipe until the summer beach season
is over.

If you decide to visit, park at Rodman’s Neck and walk. Otherwise the fee is
$10.00 to park on weekends and $8.00 during the week, $5.00 for seniors, only
during the week. The Rodman’s Neck lot gets full early on weekends.

Lots of other species around too, Kingbird, Goldfinches, Waxwings, Chipping
Sparrows, House Finches, Killdeer, both egrets, terns, gulls, etc. Be sure to
check Turtle Cove nearby.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2018-04-08 Thread Jack Rothman
It looks like birds, birders and ticks are picking up in the park.

We had about 40 birders show up for our walk today from 8:30 until noon. We had
31 species in the northern zone this morning.

It was 32 degrees and breezy when we set off. Highlights included American
Pipit, Palm and Pine Warblers, Eastern Phoebe, Golden-crowned Kinglets, a
surprising Black Vulture, Long-tailed Duck, Great Horned Owl, Field, Savannah
and Song Sparrow, a few Hermit Thrushes, Osprey, Common Loon, Red-breasted
Merganser, Horned Grebes in breeding plumage and others.

Thanks to Jeff Ward for his sharp eyes and great spotting.

If you go, stay on the paths. One person who veered into the foliage to
photograph came home with 6 ticks.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx, Orchard Beach and vicinity

2018-01-09 Thread Jack Rothman
After 10 days of birding withdrawal because of the cold, I ventured out to
Orchard Beach and vicinity on this balmy day.

The parking lot was closed, as NYC Sanitation is sending truckloads of snow
into the parking lot. They are building a mountain.

Police are tolerating parking in the oval leading up to the promenade. A few
cars were already there in the NE corner when I arrived. The leak that is
feeding fresh water into the grassy area is not frozen in a small area,
attracting gulls, starlings and most likely, other species. I’m guessing that
something good will appear if one waits long enough.

The Orchard Beach lagoon is frozen as is the water between Hunter and Twin
Islands. Turtle Cove is also frozen.

The promenade is clear for walking and the water is not frozen at the beach. I
scoped from the rocks on the North end of the beach. I also walked to Twin
Island. The entrance to Hunter Island from the beach promenade is snow bound,
as is the trail. I started out but turned back, it was difficult footing.

There were very few passerines but the place is pretty with the snow.

Greater Scaup- probably 1000, distributed around the beach Twin Island
Red-breasted Merganser
American Black Duck
Common Goldeneye (They were in fairly close)
Horned Grebe
Red-necked Grebe
Bufflehead
Northern Harrier
Red-tailed hawk
Canada Goose
Herring and Ring -billed Gulls

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx - Thursday, August 10, 2017 - Pectoral Sandpier, other shorebirds, R-t Hummers

2017-08-11 Thread Deborah Allen
Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
Thursday, August 10, 2017

Yesterday Jack Rothman, Bob DeCandido & I spent a couple of hours birding in
Pelham Bay Park. Jack Rothman had posted the day before (Aug. 9) that
shorebirds were foraging in puddles in the parking lot at Orchard Beach,
mentioning Semipalmated Plovers, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers, and Lesser
Yellowlegs.

Here's what we found:

Orchard Beach Parking Lot:

A mixed flock of shorebirds numbering at least 70 birds, including a mix of at
least 55 Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, but I couldn't get an exact count
of either species. Some of the swallows came down to the puddle for a drink.
Jack had seen 70 Semipalmated Plovers on Thursday, but we only found three. The
Pectoral Sandpiper was new.

Canada Goose - maybe a dozen and more grazing on a lawn nearby
Semipalmated Plover - 3
Least Sandpiper - see note above
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1
Semipalmated Sandpiper - see note above
Short-billed Dowitcher - 7 juveniles
Lesser Yellowlegs - 6 (adults & juveniles)
Laughing Gull - 2 at puddle
Herring Gull - flyovers
Osprey - at nearby lagoon
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Cliff Swallow - 2 to 4
Barn Swallow - at least 12, but possibly as many as 20

--
Bartow-Pell:

Ruby-throated Hummingbird - at least 5 including adult male
Downy Woodpecker
Great Crested Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo
White-breasted Nuthatch
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 5
Blue Jay
Tree Swallow - flyover
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
American Goldfinch - several near nest
Chipping Sparrow - 2
Baltimore Oriole - adult male
Yellow Warbler

Here's to mud-free birding in the Bronx,

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2017-08-09 Thread Jack Rothman
For the past few days I’ve been birding the area from Rodman’s Neck to Orchard
Beach, only walking on asphalt paths. The grass is pretty high all around so
anyone visiting should be wary of ticks. Both deer and dog ticks are here.
(Parking is $8 on weekdays and $10 on weekends at the beach. It’s best to park
at Rodman’s Neck and bird your way over to the beach.)

There are large flocks of mixed swallows, including Barn, Tree, Northern
Rough-winged and Cliff over Rodman’s Neck and at Orchard Beach. Lots of Chimney
Swifts flying too. There are both egrets, GB Herons, Mallards, Cormorants and
Yellow Warblers, Goldfinch, Carolina Wren around too.

At the beach are Forester’s Terns, some feeding their young across the lagoon.
There are several Osprey and lots of gulls lounging in the parking lot. There
were about 50 Great Black-backed among the Laughing, Herring and Ring-billed.

There was a flock of approximately 70 Semi-palmated Plover flying around the
area.

Interestingly both Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers are still forging in the
puddles formed from the last rain. There was a Lesser Yellowlegs foraging in
there too. I am still trying to figure out what these birds are eating from
puddles that form overnight on asphalt.

If it rains overnight, the birds are foraging the next morning. So what is it
that hatches out so quickly on previously dry asphalt?

Our walk today had another terrific turnout of friendly people. Birding was
quite slow, as many species seen earlier this week were gone.
The Northern Harrier is back. This bird is reliably over the landfill this time
of the year, in case anyone is interested in seeing or photographing this
species.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park - Bronx 11/29, 11/30

2014-11-30 Thread Richard Aracil
Hi All,
The past couple days at Pelham Bay Park have been quite birdy. Highlights
include a Baltimore Oriole which Jared Cole spotted today in the row of cedars
along the landfill just south of the Pelham bridge. The day before, in those
same trees, was a Blue-headed Vireo which we could not relocate today. On
11/29, in the small saltmarsh northwest of the landfill, I flushed a Wilson's
Snipe. Other uncommon species included American Woodcock, Orange-crowned
Warbler, American Pipit, Field Sparrow, and White-crowned Sparrow.

It was a beautiful day for birding and 19 people showed up for a walk through
Hunter Island and Turtle Cove in Pelham Bay Park, the Bronx.

Thanks to Bronx Brendan, we all had terrific close looks at a Great Horned Owl.
Other raptors included three Peregrine Falcons and at least four Red-tailed
Hawks. At the first high lookout on Hunter Island, we watched as 300+ Brant
lifted off in front of us, stunning.
Passerines were few but there were enough ducks, waterfowl and a few sunbathing
Harbor Seals to keep everyone interested. Our very social group enjoyed the
birds, the weather and each other!

A dozen people birded the edge of the lagoon, alongside the parking lot at
Orchard Beach and then on Hunter Island on a CityIslandBirds walk from
8:00-12:00.
Highlight was a Clay-colored Sparrow found by Matthieu Benoit near the kayak
launch. There were many sparrows and we could have spent the entire day
investigating this area. We found several White-throated, Chipping, White
Crowned, (both adult and first winter), Song, Swamp and Savannah Sparrows.
Because of the relatively low foliage in this park, it is possible to see many
birds close by and at eye level. We had some great looks at a close by overhead
Coopers’ Hawk and an immature Bald Eagle.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park Bronx - 11/9

2013-11-10 Thread Richard Aracil
Hi All,
Yesterday during a Parks Deptartment-led walk on the Pelham Landfill,
highlights included flyovers of 5-6 each of American Pipit and Horned Larks,
plus a flock of about 30 Snow Buntings. After the walk, I birded around the
park for rest of the day. In the area northwest of the landfill
(https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zQd_065mT4Pg.k4ZYg52ZjsWo), there
is another (or maybe one from Turtle Cove came over?) immature Red-Headed
Woodpecker. Over in Turtle Cove, at least one adult Red-headed continues. I did
not search around to see if there were still others in the area. On Eastchester
Bay, I had my FOS Horned Grebes, Hooded Merganser and Gadwall for the park and
there was a Clapper Rail, which I inadvertently flushed while I was on the
marsh peninsula south of City Is. Rd.

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx. - 30 Oct.

2013-10-31 Thread Richard Aracil
Hello,
Started at the "Southern Zone" of Pelham Bay Park this morning where highlights
included a late male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER feeding from a Sapsucker well
and a very late HY WHITE-EYED VIREO. We also had our FOS RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Turtle Cove section. There, a really late
OVENBIRD was the highlight. Plus, one NELSON'S SPARROW continues in that same
area south of City Island Road and the VESPER SPARROW was still there in the
barren area inside the southeast corner of the driving range. Jack Rothman also
found a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER near the start of the woodchip trail from
the parking lot at Turtle Cove.
I then made my way to the strip running the east side of Orchard Beach Lagoon
where I found another VESPER SPARROW. On the lagoon, there were 4 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL and 88 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS both of which, ebird flagged as high.
Good Birding!Richard Aracil

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx - 10/29

2013-10-29 Thread Richard Aracil
Hi All,
Had a productive 4 hours in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park.
Highlights included 2-3 NELSON'S SPARROWS still in the same spot I've been
seeing them (marshy peninsula south of City Island Road). There was a VESPER
SPARROW foraging in the patch of bare dirt with scattered weeds inside the
southeast corner of the driving range fence. In the same area along the
northern woodchip path, an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues. I briefly
heard the calls of an unseen COMMON RAVEN. As it was starting to get dark, a
calling WILSON'S SNIPE flew over me as I stood on the berm trail of Turtle
Cove. In the easternmost section of saltmarsh grass in Turtle Cove, I saw a
rail flush up twice above the Spartina, but both times were too brief and dark
for me to ID before the bird dropped back down. Emanating from the grass right
where this bird disappeared, I heard vocalizations I was unfamiliar with. You
can hear these squeaky calls in the video linked here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding/10567390115/ I think these
vocalizations match particularly well with these Virginia Rail calls:
http://xeno-canto.org/14 see further notes in the ebird checklist linked
below. I have never heard a Virginia Rail in the field, so I welcome anyone's
input on this!

2013-07-12 Thread Jack Rothman
On a relatively cool mid-afternoon walk to Turtle Cove and the edge alongside
the Orchard Beach parking lot, I was surprised to find more than a dozen
Killdeer. There were also more than a dozen Cedar Waxwings landing and feeding
on something very low on the glasswort in Turtle Cove. I assume they were
hawking insects, as there are no berries.

Killdeer 12
Cedar Waxwings 12+
Snowy Egret 11
Great Egrets 2
Black-crowned Night Heron 3
Song Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow 2
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Osprey (with fish in talons)
Marsh Wren (several popping up all along the marsh)
Red-winged Blackbirds 30+ (flocks of females flying all around the marsh)
Barn Swallow
Northern Flicker 2
Mourning Dove
European Starling 60+
American Robin 25+
Canada Goose 10
Herring Gull 8
Greater Black-backed Gull 2

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx 12/6: C. Redpoll and Highlights.

2012-12-07 Thread Richard Aracil

Hi All,

Spent around 2.5 hours in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park yesterday.
When I first arrived, I had a pair of Common Ravens mobbing a Red-tailed Hawk
(I'm guessing the same pair that nested on a building in co-op? I've been
consistently seeing a pair in the park throughout November). In the mostly
matted Spartina, I heard and then saw well a late (Wintering?) Marsh Wren south
of the metal bridge. In the overgrown, brushy woodland between the bridge and
the driving range, I heard and saw a Common Redpoll as it flew in and perched
momentarily at the top of a tree. A bit later on, I flushed an American
Woodcock in the same area.

Good Birding,
Rich Aracil
