Keywords would be digital representation of musical structure

improvisation/anticipation, interfaces of the physical to the virtual

Media and music/art theory would be important, media technology

Europe would be preferred, overseas possible nevertheless.

what is concerning framestein i read on framestein.org:
Requirements: Windows, DirectX version 7 or later, Pure Data.

I'd be surprised if you can meet these requirements on os x.

for the others i'd suggest you try the easiest way first and install
a pd-extended build

make sure you delete the old preferences file so the new installation

hi list,

it is possible to control vlc from pd using the py external with the

due to limitations of vlc it seems to be impossible to display video

works with linux.

import pyext

self.s.connect((str(host), port)) # connect to server on the port

	def list_1(self,*atoms):

vlc -I rc --rc-host=localhost:1234

here is a thread on the videolan forum regarding the video issue under

if anyone finds a fix post here please.

also the python code is just a working proof-of-concept and proper
error handling should be added (if the connection drops for example).

[PD] another iPhone/iPodTouch OSC controller

2009-02-06 Thread Max

just stubled about this (via Max-mailinglist)
(from the makers of framestein)

http://pinktwins.com/fantastick/

from the website:

FantaStick is a minimalistic remote interface for use with software
such as Max/MSP or Pure Data.
With FantaStick you receive multitouch-events and issue simple drawing
commands to build exactly the kind of interface you want.

FantaStick is 100% widget-free! 0% OSC content!
Instead of a limited set of builtin-widgets, the interface-logic
resides in Max/MSP (or your software of choice) and only drawing
commands are sent to the device. This leads to interfaces that work
exactly the way you want - and look gorgeously minimalistic, too!

Features

- Minimalistic, fullscreen control area with nothing on it but what
you provide.
- Multitouch-events on the device are forwarded to your host via UDP.
Information includes the touch state (begin, move, end) and coordinates.
- Designed for no-hassle: zero-click startup, the device does not
sleep or suspend network, flicker- and lag-free.
- Displaying images (fetched with URLs) and caching them locally for
use on non-networked locations.

- Basic drawing with lines, boxes and text.

there is a wrapper application which lets you use the general midi

http://notahat.com/simplesynth/

it's only 204 KB big. this is the simplest solution afaik.

Re: [PD] I am a new user confused as to why I cant get GEM object to work.

2009-02-23 Thread Max

There is no need for X11 if you want to use GEM.
only PDP/PidiP and Gridflow depend on X11, but you said you want to
run GEM.

the errors you posted suggest that you probably use a build for intel
in a PPC machine or the other way round.

make sure you have downloaded the right version for your architecture:

[PD] pd~ to sync audio/video

2009-03-04 Thread Max

hi list,

i am trying out if the pd~ object is an alternative for sync playback
of audio and video to the “traditional” method of using two instances
of pd talking to each other by netserver/netclient.

so the situation is that we need one pd instance with audio on and one
without for gem.
because audio needs to run without dropouts in the first process,
while gem will run in the second process.

to run the video in the parent process and the audio in the subprocess
with pd~ doesn't work, because the main process needs audio on. (see
pd~ helppatch the last lines)

to run the audio in the parent process and the video in the subprocess
using pd~ -noutsig 0 -ninsig 0 doesn't work because pd freezes when
using these parameters on pd~

when using pd~-noutsig 0 it does work, but only if the subprocess will
switch its dsp computing on for a moment it can be switched of
afterwards.

is it a good idea at all to use pd~ for that purpose or should i stick
to the netserver/netclient solution?

the midi controller example is a good one i believe.
here is what i did a while ago
http://www.netpd.org/Midilearn

Am 12.03.2009 um 03:27 schrieb Phil Stone:

Hi Derek,

Maybe a very simple example would be good. I have an Ozone MIDI-
controller, and it has eight knobs, which send out continuous
controller data on 8 different MIDI CC numbers. Now, [ctlin] (MIDI
control input) doesn't have settable arguments -- only creation
args., so I racked my brains trying to figure out how to make an
object that would take a knob number argument, 1-8, convert that
number to the corresponding controller number, and watch that
controller number with [ctlin].

(Admittedly, it would have been easy to create [Ozknob1]...[Ozknob8]
objects, but this reeked of kludge to my sensibilities; neither did
I consider it elegant to use a [ctlin] for each knob that watched
*all* controller data, then [route]d the data from the desired
control number -- I wanted the pre-filtering to be done by [ctlin],
if possible).

The more generalized problem is this: take a creation argument of an
abstraction, *do something with it*, then get it into the creation
argument of a contained abstraction.

Nothing I tried worked, until I took the attached dynamic approach.

[PD] GEM pix_write bugs (timelapse)

2009-03-28 Thread Max

hi list,

i've thrown together this tiny gem patch which makes a timelapse
slideshow.

i have encountered a few issues with it.

configuration:
Pd version 0.41.4-extended-20090223
GEM: ver: 0.91.3 'tigital'
GEM: compiled: Feb 23 2009
OS X 10.5.6

the issues:
1. pix_write doesn't interpret the file path correctly. it seems it
can't understand relative paths at all.

2. pix_write accepts a message [file file [type](. it creates
files with a .jpg ending if the type is 0. But in reality it still is
a TIFF. no matter what value you write.

3. pix_write creates files with an acending number 0... this
conflicts with how other objects like pix_multiimage do it
(0...9)

just submitted that to the gem bugtracker.

and the patch:
put this to / because of the bug in pix_write to make it work. put a
folder called frames beside it.

timelapse.pd
Description: Binary data

beware: this patch will also eat up all the memory and will crash pd.
this isn't pix_writes problem though - i'll try to find out why this
is now.

please refer to the help patch for [gemwin], then see the subpatch [pd

somehow makes sense to look for it there.

you will find there that by simply sending a [color 0 1 1( message to

hope tht helps.

yeah this is weird huh?

no it's not weird. it's a known issue of Pd on OSX (fixed in Pd-
extended, afair) where Pd get's started in the / directory. all
relative paths are thus relative to the root and not to your home-
directory, nor the patch-directory nor to your mailbox).

no. relative paths work fine with pix_film and others. it's a problem
of pix_write.

i guess it is crashing right after you try loading 100 images
(or so) into RAM.

what do you expect?

no it isn't the problem of a sequence wich is too long. it is the
problem that the old sequence doesn't get erased from the ram.

(if you look carefully, you might also notice that [pix_write]
gradually fills up your harddisk. this is no bug either ;-))

that aint a problem either.

well, obviously you are missing something. i hope someone can

in the audio settings of Pd. actually i should correct myself: you

no, it will not avoid interference.
it's the way to go if you have a dual core computer and wish do
dedicated 1 core for the audio, and 1 core (+ GPU) for the images
rendering.
but since the 2 pd instance are synchronised at audio rate, if the
video processing is using more then 100% of a CPU, then it will slow
down both pd instance and you should then ear click on the audio.

true. to avoid that slow down the framerate dynamically if cpu usage
is approaching 100% in the rendering process.

to avoid interference, you should use 2 pd, and connect them via
netsend.

that did the job but there are some difficulties with that approach:
if an instance with netserver crashes the port will be blocked for
some time.

Re: [PD] letters that move to their correct position to form readable text

2009-08-14 Thread Max

hi tim,

additionally to what frank said you might want to use a font with
fixed width, otherwise you need to parse the kerning information
somehow. with a fixed width you can just count the letter position and
add the space to the x-position. use [text3d].

For showing letters you could use Gem.

Then use pmpd or msd to do the smooth movement with some physical

add some fixed mass points to the line(s) of text you want to fill,
and add
mobile masses connected by links to their respective fixed/final

Turn off all links by setting the k rigidity parameter to 0,
spread out the

masses start

moving.

it works now. the GLSL in OS X is very picky about all floats beeing
defined with a decimal dot.

(here i use a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M w/ os x)
to make these patches really useful you have to use a camera with
manual focus and manual exposure. auto-* will wreck the results.
in order to optimize the output an edge detection could be an
instesting addition.

do you mind if i add your version to the collection?

Ok, so there are now some Mac OS X and Windows

test builds

for people to try. For GNU/Linux, building

from source

is still the easiest way.

http://puredata.info/dev/PdGuiRewriteTestBuilds

I think its pretty useable on GNU/Linux and Mac OS

X.

The Windows side needs more work, so I would

greatly

appreciate feedback and contributions from Windows

users.

Its quite stable, if I edit the audio in Max patch, with audio

The point is that the opendialog in Max help returns the following

Re: [PD] Small bug with comment

2010-02-09 Thread Max
there is a bug in vanilla and even in the latest rewrite, that dots followed by
a space are disappearing after saving and reopening patches.

make the first line in this patch read
first 1. - see there is no dot!
after reopening you'll see:
first 1 - see there is no dot!

pix_delay actually works exactly that way. its not milliseconds, it's frames.
have a look at the helppatch fo pix_delay

Your patch is pretty simple, but it seems to be that the logic of this

 Hi guys,

I'm working on a patch (rjdj scene) where I'm moving a little object around
on a plane. The object is been given random coordinates which it is supposed
to gradually move to in five seconds.

Right now my solution is to bang the x- and y-coordinates into a line-object
which works fine, but I'd prefer for the movement to be more natural. By
natural I mean that the object accelerates in the beginning and then
decellerates near the end until it comes to a full stop at the exact
 coordinates that where randomly produced..

I've been trying to get my head around a solution for quite a while now, but
 unfortunately no luck so far.

I'm sure this must be simple stuff for some of you PD-geniuses out there, and
I'm hoping that one of you will stand up and show me how it's done :)

 Thanks in advance,
 Thomas :)

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] OS X 10.6: unplugging headphones crashes Pd

it's not fixed by the OS update.
i only had this phenomenon if GEM was involved too and submitted that to the

if you can make a patch where GEM is not involved and it still crashes with Pd
when the phone is unplugged then that would be good to post here.

Re: [PD] OS X 10.6: unplugging headphones crashes Pd

i can _not_ reproduce that with *any* patch here.
the sound is gone after unplugging headphones, but disabling it an re-enabeling
it in the Pd window makes the Sound come back on the internal speakers. Not the
desired way but no crash or freeze either.
