Re: coming comet

2018-12-11 Thread John
I went out and looked for it a little while ago (around 9:00pm EST). I figure if
it's visible to the naked eye & can be photographed with a 35mm lens, I should
be able to find it with my binoculars. Once I can find it with binoculars, I'll
get the tripod & camera out.

I can see Orion & the Pleiades fairly clearly (5 of 7 sisters with my "naked"
eye) and those are the constellations I need to guide me to the comet's location.

But no joy so far. I'll have to get away from town & try again.

Definitely an Asahi PENTAX Spotmatic, fitted with a 50mm f/1.4 Super Takamar

All told I spotted the camera on-screen in seven different shots.

Qimage

2018-12-11 Thread Postmaster
I've been using Qimage, a printing utility, for years. Its resampling
system automatically resamples your image to your printer's native
resolution during printing (without altering the image file itself),
which really does seem to result in improved detail. It also does
non-destructive cropping and arrangement of multiple prints on a
single sheet of paper.

But today I discovered one of its best features. Have you ever run a
inkjet head test pattern and discovered you need to run a cleaning
cycle? And then cringed at the thought of how much expensive ink was
being used in the process? Yeah. Been there, done that. But I just
discovered can run its own cleaning cycle, independent of the print
driver and - get this - you can have it run the cycle ONLY for the ink
that's showing problems! BRILLIANT!

I would rhetorically ask why the printer manufacturers don't offer the
same option... but since they're the one's who sell ink I expect
everyone can work it out.

Two and a half months ago I sent a K-1 to Precision for update to ii.

2. BN: Precision must have decided I wasn’t serious when I indicated I wanted
email notification of any changes in status, like if they actually were working
on the upgrade, were ready to ship, etc. Nothing from them since the first
acknowledgment of receipt of my camera.

This is one of my biggest peeves with them. When I complained they said
that they work on thousands of cameras and that I could just look on the
website. When I told them that it would be trivial to set up their CRM
to automatically send email, they said that that's not what they do.

3. GN: I am a few thousand miles away, but I was able to get to UPS and
reschedule delivery.

When I complained about the delivery and tried to reschedule, they said
that they couldn't. I stopped by, couldn't call, the local UPS to
schedule in person pickup the morning I was leaving on my trip. I had
complained to Ricoh, and unbenownst to me, they had rescheduled
delivery. Fortunately, they were able to find it, even though it took a
while because the guy that knew where it was was out to lunch.

On the bright side, while I was waiting someone who looked vaguely
familiar came in, it turns out he's a machinist friend that I hadn't
seen for years, since he moved away, didn't know he was back in town.

4. BN: it took a bit more than the promised ten days to do the upgrade.

Hoping it was worth the wait...

Yeah, after the spill I took and the problems that have developed, I was
sort of wishing I could just send mine in for the upgrade and get
repairs as part of the deal, but that offer has expired.

Good news bad news good news...

2018-12-11 Thread Stan Halpin
Two and a half months ago I sent a K-1 to Precision for update to ii.
1. GN: Email note from UPS: a package from Precision will be delivered today,
Adult Signature Required.
2. BN: Precision must have decided I wasn’t serious when I indicated I wanted
email notification of any changes in status, like if they actually were working
on the upgrade, were ready to ship, etc. Nothing from them since the first
acknowledgment of receipt of my camera.
3. GN: I am a few thousand miles away, but I was able to get to UPS and
reschedule delivery.
4. BN: it took a bit more than the promised ten days to do the upgrade.

Hoping it was worth the wait...

PESO Boyne Mountain Cover Shoot

2018-12-11 Thread Paul Stenquist
In September I was asked to shoot a car for Mopar Action, an auto enthusiast
pub, in Boyne Mountain, Michigan, an “up North” resort town. Normally I would
try to wrap the shoot as quickly as possible, traveling alone and spending
minimal time on location, but this looked like an opportunity for a mini
vacation, and being post labor day, off season rates would be in effect. So I
took my lady friend and my son with me and booked a room for a couple of days
at a time share condo on Lake Charlevoix. It proved to be a nice trip, and,
more importantly, having two extra sets of hands to help with the shoot was
excellent. I’m spoiled. We shot a bunch of looks for the article and a few for
the cover. The magazine was just published, and I’m pleased.

Here’s the cover: https://www.photo.net/photo/18511271/February-2019-Cover

This is my original. Pentax K-1 plus D FA 150-450, f5.6, 1/160th, ISO 200,
tripod, remote shutter and mirror up. You can see it differs minimally from the
final version for which the magazine art director brightened the nose a bit and
cropped the image very tight:
https://www.photo.net/photo/18511270/My-Original-Image

And here’s my lady friend, Charmaine, lighting the font of the car with a
reflector:
