Ah, yes ... Fredonia is a pretty small berg. Know in the area for the furniture store, Feagans of Fredonia. I live in an even smaller town, just west of Paducah, and it's in a dry county as well. In fact, I tend bar in a bootleg joint that operates with a wink and a nod from the police, as long as we stay closed until after the churches let out on Sunday, and shut down before Sunday evening services begin. -- Walt On 9/27/2010 8:15 PM, John Sessoms wrote: From: Walter Gilbert I assume it's a hospital bracelet since they issued tickets for drinks, rather than bracelets. It's only been a couple of years since they started allowing sales of alcohol on Sundays -- and even then, it's limited to by-the-drink sales in restaurants with a certain minimum seating capacity. And that wouldn't have happened if the town hadn't made a big display of trying to attract an arts community in order to facilitate a lower-town renaissance -- and the arts community does like a sip of wine after Sunday brunch. ;-) That's funny, because my mom's family is from Fredonia, KY, which is still dry and Paducah was where they all went to go drinking. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Wow! That's quite an event! It actually sounds worthy of a trip just for the photos. I'm trying to get someone to introduce me into our local underground scene. I really got a kick out of photographing the interesting people I came across at our own local BBQ festival last weekend. As far as I could tell, I'm the only Pentax shooter in the city. In fact, I've only seen one person with a Pentax since I began shooting, and it was some guy who appeared out of nowhere at the drag strip in Sikeston. Thanks, Brian. I toyed with the light a bit, but concluded that the falloff enhanced the darkness of her hair and the contrast with her skin. I don't think it would have worked with a blond or a redhead, but on this particular girl, I thought it added to the shot. -- Walt On 9/27/2010 8:37 AM, Brian Walters wrote: On Sun, 26 Sep 2010 19:53 -0500, Walter Gilbertldott...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, Went to a local BBQ festival yesterday and took some snapshots. Re: PESO: Feelin' the Groove
I assume it's a hospital bracelet since they issued tickets for drinks, rather than bracelets. They keep all the drinkers penned up in a beer garden -- which is just a glorified term for what's generally referred to as a segregation unit in the correctional system. Paducah, KY is very much in Bible Belt. It's only been a couple of years since they started allowing sales of alcohol on Sundays -- and even then, it's limited to by-the-drink sales in restaurants with a certain minimum seating capacity. And that wouldn't have happened if the town hadn't made a big display of trying to attract an arts community in order to facilitate a lower-town renaissance -- and the arts community does like a sip of wine after Sunday brunch. ;-) Best, Walt On 9/27/2010 11:13 AM, P. Re: Another local camera store gone.
It is a cryin' shame, though I suppose it's inevitable. I was elated to discover that my local camera shop (Central Photo in Paducah, KY) had the K-x in stock when I bought mine from them. Their price was very competitive with anything I saw on the web, and it was wonderful to be able to actually hold the camera in my hands before making the purchase. I've gone back to them for every related purchase, except for one -- my old Takumar 135mm prime. I really do wish the shop carried at least a small selection of used/classic glass. But, I had to get mine on eBay from someone who lived within driving distance. In any event, I plan to keep supporting the shop as long as they're open for business. Re: GESO: Photographic Therapy
These images certainly look therapeutic. The thing that has made me such an enthusiast about photography is the fact that, when I'm taking pictures, I'm thinking about nothing but the shot. It's utterly absorbing for me, and as I recently told someone, I'm never happier than I am when I'm taking photographs. Great work, David. -- Walt On 9/13/2010 3:31 AM, David Mann wrote: You may remember last week I mentioned I'd gone outside to take some photos when an aftershock just about sent me over the edge. Plus I was alone at home and the isolation was not doing me any good either. So I went outside to the garden to try and clear my head. I saw our magnolia tree in full flower and decided I wanted to take a couple of photos of it. So I went inside to get the camera, and ended up spending a bit of quality time with it. http://www.multi.net.nz/therapy/ Taking these helped me relax, probably by distraction more than anything else. Hi Ann, Thanks for all the input. I looked around the settings under my account to see if there might be something I could do to change the way it works, but couldn't find anything. Let me know if you recall what the trick is and I'll compose future messages accordingly. I agree with your prescription on the color for my sidekick photo. I could probably remedy it by darkening the hue a shade or two in Photoshop. I'll give that a try in a bit to see how that works. And thanks for the kind words on my other photos. Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens
Thanks for the info, Adam. It seems to be really well-built compared to some others I've used and handled. Plenty of resistance in the lens barrel, and a very smooth, crisp responsiveness. I'm pretty pleased with it, construction-wise. And, giving up a stop, and the last 50mm doesn't seem like too much to sacrifice. The look is reminiscent of some Sigmas I've seen, so I suspect you're right. Best, Walt It's almost assuredly a rebadge of the Sigma 70-300 APO, and as such quite a reasonable performer considering its cost. Thanks, John. I think that's a probably an excellent guide to go by down the road when I do more involved portraiture. What I'm envisioning in this situation is more like pictures made at school, where they move them through like cattle. Re: Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?
Hi Igor, Thanks so much for taking the time to answer in such detail. You've given me quite a bit to think about, here. Given that I'm brand-spanking-new at this, I'm hesitant to dive in with too much ambition. As I mentioned in my reply to John, I envisioned a kind of picture mill situation to make things as efficient as possible. Though, I agree that having an a la carte option would certainly be an attractive selling point. In doing that, I could drum up a lot of word-of-mouth if I did a good job of it. What makes me hesitate, though, is that if I botch the whole exercise because of disorganization due to a lack of experience, or some other unforeseen disaster, then I have horrible word-of-mouth to deal with -- the impact of which is magnitudes greater than good word-of-mouth. Since this would be my first shoot, I'm inclined to focus on getting parents and coaches saying, Hey ... this guy does good work at a reasonable price, and then let market forces take over once my name gets established. Of course, including a business card, and maybe a flier in each set soliciting inquiries for individual sessions would be a good way to go about getting my name out and drumming up more business. In any event, you've definitely given me food for thought as I go about establishing my credentials. And, again, I very much appreciate your thoughtful input. It'll be good to keep in mind for future endeavors. Many thanks, Walt On 9/9/2010 12:50 PM, Igor Roshchin wrote: Walter, First, a disclaimer. Personally, I'd rather offer photos priced a la carte, with discounts for multiple (mix and match) photos from the same client/order You can choose between two models (typical for event photographers for this sort of public events): 1. Cheap and dirty or 2. Great but more expensive or some sort of combination between the two. (From your description, I suspect your clients will gravitate to the former one, but you need some flavor of the latter to attract the attention) Here is what I mean: 1. Once you shoot all your photos, you don't do much of selection (I still would remove obvious misses.), upload them to the website, and let the clients choose and order. Then you adjust the chosen photos before sending them to the printer (photo lab) 2. You do careful selection and adjustment of your shots (can be a big drag in case of 1000+ photos). Then you post the resulting photos to the web for the clients to choose and order. Practically (depending on demand and number of images), - you might to do a hybrid between the two: develop just a bunch of selected photos - to show a representative gallery, but then dump all photos with just a minimum selection (as in 1.), clearly indicating that they are yet undeveloped. This would save a lot of time and energy, especially in case of small number of sales. If you are using LR, you might consider this plugin: http://lr.theturninggate.net/html-galleries/ttg-client-response-gallery/ (or something similar from the same site) that will help in the ordering process. One of those templates can even be coupled with an online direct-printing services. I didn't find it useful for myself - you really need a constant flow of customers to justify using that printing service (Fotomoto or FoxyCart). Re: PESO: Storm rollin' through
That is a truly wonderful photo ... the kind of photo I learn from. If I had been in your shoes, in all likelihood, I would've tried to zoom in on the rainbow and missed the real power of the image -- particularly the up-swept look of the clouds. Very nice shot. Thanks for sharing it. -- Walt Got caught by a shower when I was out biking a few days ago, but it passed on by and I didn't melt. Many thanks, Brian! I really had to tease the shadows out of the original, but I completely agree. Without them, the picture is nothing, really. I'll take a rain check on the insult. PESOs: More B/W Experimentation (Not Pentax)
Having tinkered with the photo of the bridge and salvaged it through B/W conversion, I figured I'd try my hand at a couple of older images I wasn't crazy about, but couldn't bring myself to delete. Re: More quake photos
I live in an area that was last hit by a serious quake in 1812 -- a series of three over the course of four months, estimated to be around 8.0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone). They've been saying we're overdue for about 50 years now ... not the most comforting thought, considering the area is not anywhere near as prepared -- building or infrastructure-wise -- as Christchurch appears to be. I've felt a couple of tremors in the past -- around the size of your aftershocks listed below. They're startling, but don't leave you with the sense of dread/terror that a 7+ quake will. I certainly don't look forward to the day when the big one finally happens. And, sadly enough, I'm in no way prepared for it. Hope things settle down for you folks, soon. I'm sure the psychological aftershocks will go on for a while after the geological ones finally fade. Just hang in there. Best, Walt On 9/6/2010 5:45 PM, David Mann wrote: The central city is still mostly cordoned off as a few buildings have sustained extra damage due to aftershocks. I found this link through Facebook and it has a lot of photos that I haven't seen before in the media. http://www.crashbang.co.nz/quake040910/index.html?ref=nf I had a fairly disturbed night, we had a few of the biggest aftershocks we've had so far. 11:24pm 5.2 11:40pm 5.4 12:21am 4.7 3:24am 5.4 Lots more in the 3 to 4 range, it's only the larger ones that wake me up but the smaller ones are enough to keep me awake. I know I'll be safe but it's surprising how much frustration and anxiety it causes when you don't know how much sleep you'll get. I think it's exacerbated by the general lack of sleep, it's a bit of a vicious circle. I'd be struggling to cope if I was living alone so I really feel sorry for those who are. Janet was actually away in the North Island last week at a conference, she arrived home on Friday night so I'm lucky she was around (yes she was glad to be home, she would have been pretty worried otherwise). The news footage I saw last night makes me realise how lucky we are to live on this side of the city where we didn't get much liquefaction. Lots of houses are being condemned due to huge cracks appearing right through them. Some are almost brand new but they had no chance when the ground opened up underneath and ruined the foundations. My work PC is now set up in my office at home but I'm not terribly motivated due to the fatigue. I'm keeping up to date with the news so as soon as the cordon comes off the area where my office building is, I'll go in. I need to collect a few things so I'll probably only have room for one camera lens (K10D and 24mm I think). I'd take our PS as it's smaller but Janet has that with her for work. PESO -- That Confounded Bridge
Here's a shot of an old, rather narrow bridge spanning the Mississippi River, between Cairo, IL and Bird's Point, MO. I almost deleted it, thinking it was an extremely unremarkable, standard photo taken while crossing bridges by tourists the world over. But, when I got to looking at the shadows and lines, I thought, Ah-ha! This might be salvageable! So, I converted it to B/W and was pretty pleased with it after all. http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4965791589/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4965791589/lightbox/ Thoughts? Critiques? Re: PESO -- That Confounded Bridge
Thanks, Paul. I really do need to work on my B/W eye. I've mostly used it as a fallback position when a color shot just refuses to turn out like like I want it. Which is strange, considering I've always felt more drawn to B/W images when they're well done. I guess it just takes a more discerning eye to spot a potential B/W shot, whereas potential color shots are often self-evident to the point of smacking me in the face. Thanks again. -- Walt On 9/6/2010 11:29 PM, Paul Sorenson wrote: B/W is a good choice for this one. Re: PESO -- That Confounded Bridge
Thanks, Christine. Much appreciated. I had to tinker with it quite a bit to make it OK to my eye. The sky was extremely clear that day, and as you can see from the direction of the shadows, the sun was pretty high in the sky. I had to really tone down the highlight to give it any kind of mood at all. -- Walt On 9/7/2010 12:07 AM, Christine Aguila wrote: I like it, Walt. Pretty good bw rendering as well. OT: Potential gear bags
Hi all, Yesterday, while having a lovely beverage at my favorite local dispensary, I saw a gentleman wearing what looked to me like an excellent camera bag -- only he was using it for diapers, bottles, wipes, etc. for the baby he was carrying. It was an over-the-shoulder type sling bag that hung across his torso and fell at about waist-level. I asked him where he'd gotten it, and he told me he'd ordered it from cheaperthandirt.com -- a shooting sports equipment site. So, I checked the site, and unfortunately, that particular bag wasn't listed there any longer. Still, they did have several there at reasonable prices that appear to be potentially good candidates for photography use, and at very reasonable prices compared to some of the LowerPro gear I've seen. I thought I'd pass along the link in case anyone might be interested, and see if anyone had any experience using anything along these lines to get pros and cons. Re: Potential gear bags
Inasmuch as I don't typically run into the Cali Cartel or other such ruffians while birding, or shooting the rural landscape of western Kentucky, I figure I could get away with carrying my equipment in a shopping cart, but for the jarring and lack of protection against the elements. I figure these would suffice in that regard. Re: OT: Potential gear bags
Well, hey -- using one to carry photo equipment would only be the latest in a long line of heresies for me, such as: drinking beer from a tumbler, putting trash in grocery bags, using a BBQ lighter to set off fireworks, and eating ice cream with a demitasse spoon. I figure it would work pretty well in a deer stand or turkey blind this fall. On 9/5/2010 4:43 PM, P. J. Alling wrote: It's an ordnance bag, you can carry your grenades and blocks of C4 in it too...
