Paducah, KY is very much in Bible Belt. It's only been a couple of
years since they started allowing sales of alcohol on Sundays -- and
even then, it's limited to by-the-drink sales in restaurants with a
certain minimum seating capacity. And that wouldn't have happened if
the town hadn't made a big display of trying to attract an arts
community in order to facilitate a lower-town renaissance -- and the
arts community does like a sip of wine after Sunday brunch. ;-)

That's funny, because my mom's family is from Fredonia, KY, which is
still dry and Paducah was where they all went to go drinking.

seen one person with a Pentax since I began shooting, and it was some
guy who appeared out of nowhere at the drag strip in Sikeston. I saw

  Thank you, Daniel!

The place was crawling with conventionally pretty girls, but this one
just had one of those faces that screamed at me to capture it. The fact
that she was shy is communicated in her suppressed smile, which I really

take the shot.

Re: PESO: Feelin' the Groove

I assume it's a hospital bracelet since they issued tickets for
drinks, rather than bracelets. They keep all the drinkers penned up in
a beer garden -- which is just a glorified term for what's generally
referred to as a segregation unit in the correctional system.
Paducah, KY is very much in Bible Belt. It's only been a couple of
years since they started allowing sales of alcohol on Sundays -- and
even then, it's limited to by-the-drink sales in restaurants with a
certain minimum seating capacity. And that wouldn't have happened if
the town hadn't made a big display of trying to attract an arts
community in order to facilitate a lower-town renaissance -- and the
arts community does like a sip of wine after Sunday brunch. ;-)

Re: PESO - Monarchs

2010-09-19 Thread Walter Gilbert

Wow! Would've loved to have been there!

I have a mimosa tree that attracts a good number of swallowtails for a
fairly brief period of time. I missed a lot of opportunities to get
good shots because I simply wasn't paying attention for the better part
of late spring/early summer. I won't make that mistake again.

Great shot, Frank!

cloudy) not many people. I was able to quietly walk right up to the
trees they were gathering on and get quite a few close ups. I must
have taken about 250 frames (bracketing, so really about 80 or 90
shots). It was spectacular (the monarchs, not my shots) and I'll need
hours just to go through them and choose the best few for a small
gallery. Until then, here's an early shot I took which I rather like.

Re: Another local camera store gone.

2010-09-14 Thread Walter Gilbert
It is a cryin' shame, though I suppose it's inevitable. I was elated
to discover that my local camera shop (Central Photo in Paducah, KY) had
the K-x in stock when I bought mine from them. Their price was very
competitive with anything I saw on the web, and it was wonderful to be
able to actually hold the camera in my hands before making the
purchase. I've gone back to them for every related purchase, except for
one -- my old Takumar 135mm prime. I really do wish the shop carried at
least a small selection of used/classic glass. But, I had to get mine
on eBay from someone who lived within driving distance.

In any event, I plan to keep supporting the shop as long as they're open
for business. For what it's worth, every time I've been in there, he's
seemed to be doing a fairly brisk business.

Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens

I think there may have been a bit of camera shake in the dog photo. I
kept having to call his name to get him to look at me, and his attention

contributed to the softness.

Re: GESO: Photographic Therapy

2010-09-13 Thread Walter Gilbert
These images certainly look therapeutic. The thing that has made me
such an enthusiast about photography is the fact that, when I'm taking

I am when I'm taking photographs.

Great work, David.

So I went outside to the garden to try and clear my head. I saw our magnolia

I went inside to get the camera, and ended up spending a bit of quality time

2010-09-12 Thread Walter Gilbert
There were several of these little guys hanging out on the chain-link
fence at the drag strip yesterday afternoon. This shot made me really
wish I had a nice macro lens. Alas, it was shot with my 18-55mm kit lens.

PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens

2010-09-12 Thread Walter Gilbert
Just wanted to share a few shots I took today with a lens I bought a
couple of months ago, but have yet to really use beyond just pointing it
at something to check out sharpness. It's a Promaster EDO AF LD
70-300mm 1:4-5.6 tele-macro (1:2). I noticed some pretty severe fringes
at f/4, but otherwise, I feel it's a pretty competent lens for under

to some others I've used and handled. Plenty of resistance in the lens

doesn't seem like too much to sacrifice.

It's almost assuredly a rebadge of the Sigma 70-300 APO, and as such
quite a reasonable performer considering its cost.

To get the most out of it, stop down 1-2 stops and stay away from the
last 50mm of the range where it will soften somewhat noticably.

So, here's my situation. I ran into an old high school friend who's coaching

him I'd be interested in doing it, but I've never done that sort of thing
before. He essentially said the main thing the kids' parents are concerned
about is pricing, and feels pretty confident that I'm competent enough to
handle the task based on what he's seen.

Thing is, given my lack of experience, I'm not sure how much to charge these
parents. I can go through Walmart for the prints, which seem to be pretty
reasonably priced -- the standard sports package being $15.00. I don't know if
any of you have any experience in this type of work at all, but any guidance
would be much appreciated. I've never done any sort of professional work at
all, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how much I can fairly charge these people
for my work. But, I'd like to be able to make a buck or two someday, if only
to subsidize my photography addiction.

Are there any rules of thumb or standard formulas that I could go by, aside
from asking other local photographers what they're charging?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me.

I think you're going to find Walmart's price is pretty close to the

If you're going to try to beat them, you need to find a place to get
your prints for less than Walmart's package price. At the very least,
you need to find some way to assemble a comparable package where your

Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?

2010-09-09 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Hi all,

So, here's my situation. I ran into an old high school friend who's
coaching several athletic teams. He's seen some of my photography and
asked if I'd be interested in doing some team photos for them -- soccer
and basketball. I told him I'd be interested in doing it, but I've
never done that sort of thing before. He essentially said the main
thing the kids' parents are concerned about is pricing, and feels pretty
confident that I'm competent enough to handle the task based on what
he's seen.

Thing is, given my lack of experience, I'm not sure how much to charge
these parents. I can go through Walmart for the prints, which seem to
be pretty reasonably priced -- the standard sports package being
$15.00. I don't know if any of you have any experience in this type of
work at all, but any guidance would be much appreciated. I've never
done any sort of professional work at all, so I'm at a bit of a loss as
to how much I can fairly charge these people for my work. But, I'd like
to be able to make a buck or two someday, if only to subsidize my
photography addiction.

Are there any rules of thumb or standard formulas that I could go by,
aside from asking other local photographers what they're charging?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me.

Best,

Walt

Re: Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?

  Thanks, John.

I think that's a probably an excellent guide to go by down the road when
I do more involved portraiture. What I'm envisioning in this situation
is more like pictures made at school, where they move them through like
cattle. I figure, if I can do a decent job at making the basic one or
two-pose set plus the team photo, I'll be able to build a base to get
into the serious portraiture.

Thanks for the info. Definitely something to file away for future use.

Best,

Walt

Say there are 20 team members and you spend 2 hours shooting. At $50
an hour that's a hundred bucks. Split 20 ways, that's $5 per team member.

Package from Walmart is $15, so your cost per package is $20.

Your price should be between $80 and $140 per package.

Go higher or lower based on what you think is fair market value.

Re: Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?

2010-09-09 Thread Walter Gilbert

  Hi Igor,

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer in such detail. You've
given me quite a bit to think about, here. Given that I'm
brand-spanking-new at this, I'm hesitant to dive in with too much
ambition. As I mentioned in my reply to John, I envisioned a kind of
picture mill situation to make things as efficient as possible.
Though, I agree that having an a la carte option would certainly be an
attractive selling point. In doing that, I could drum up a lot of
word-of-mouth if I did a good job of it. What makes me hesitate,
though, is that if I botch the whole exercise because of disorganization
due to a lack of experience, or some other unforeseen disaster, then I
have horrible word-of-mouth to deal with -- the impact of which is
magnitudes greater than good word-of-mouth.

Since this would be my first shoot, I'm inclined to focus on getting
parents and coaches saying, Hey ... this guy does good work at a
reasonable price, and then let market forces take over once my name
gets established. Of course, including a business card, and maybe a
flier in each set soliciting inquiries for individual sessions would be
a good way to go about getting my name out and drumming up more business.

In any event, you've definitely given me food for thought as I go about
establishing my credentials. And, again, I very much appreciate your
thoughtful input. It'll be good to keep in mind for future endeavors.

Many thanks,

Walt

What to charge - is a hard question.
In any case, - read this:
http://www.danheller.com/biz-prints.html#5
It may or may not be directly applicable to your case, but
very reasonable arguments are listed there.

I think that Walmart sports pacakge
(3 8x10, 4 5x7', 2 4x6 and 8 wallet prints) is a marketing ploy.
I wouldn't see what's special about such a set, and why would one
want it.
Personally, I'd rather offer photos priced a la carte,
with discounts for multiple (mix and match) photos from the same
client/order

You can choose between two models (typical for event photographers
for this sort of public events):
1. Cheap and dirty or
2. Great but more expensive
or some sort of combination between the two.
(From your description, I suspect your clients will gravitate to the
former one, but you need some flavor of the latter to attract the
attention)
Here is what I mean:
1. Once you shoot all your photos, you don't do much of selection
(I still would remove obvious misses.), upload them to the
website, and let the clients choose and order.
Then you adjust the chosen photos before sending them to the printer
(photo lab)

2. You do careful selection and adjustment of your shots
(can be a big drag in case of 1000+ photos). Then you post
the resulting photos to the web for the clients to choose and order.

Practically (depending on demand and number of images), -
you might to do a hybrid between the two: develop just a bunch of
selected photos - to show a representative gallery, but
then dump all photos with just a minimum selection (as in 1.),
clearly indicating that they are yet undeveloped.
This would save a lot of time and energy, especially in case of small
number of sales.

If you are using LR, you might consider this plugin:
http://lr.theturninggate.net/html-galleries/ttg-client-response-gallery/
(or something similar from the same site) that will help in the
ordering process.
One of those templates can even be coupled with an online direct-printing
services. I didn't find it useful for myself - you really need
a constant flow of customers to justify using that printing service
(Fotomoto or FoxyCart).

HTH,

Igor

  Hi Paul,

I think you've got a pretty good handle on the photography I'm thinking
about here. And, considering the friend I spoke to was talking about
seven different teams, that $240 per team (or thereabout) will add up to
a nice gear purchase for future use.

Also, it just occurred to me that I can call my sister to find out what

low-ball that a smidgen, given my lack of experience or sizable portfolio.

Thanks for your input. I figure between all I've gotten here, I'll be

Way too much for that kind of photography. The parents will hang you from the
rafters in the gym if you ask $80. Figure you're going to sell at least a dozen
packets. Price them at $20 over cost, and you'll make $240. Not bad for a
couple hours of work.

Re: More quake photos

I live in an area that was last hit by a serious quake in 1812 -- a
series of three over the course of four months, estimated to be around
8.0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone). They've
been saying we're overdue for about 50 years now ... not the most
comforting thought, considering the area is not anywhere near as
prepared -- building or infrastructure-wise -- as Christchurch appears
to be.

I've felt a couple of tremors in the past -- around the size of your
aftershocks listed below. They're startling, but don't leave you with
the sense of dread/terror that a 7+ quake will. I certainly don't look
forward to the day when the big one finally happens. And, sadly
enough, I'm in no way prepared for it.

Hope things settle down for you folks, soon. I'm sure the psychological
aftershocks will go on for a while after the geological ones finally
fade. Just hang in there.

Walt

North Island last week at a conference, she arrived home on Friday night so I'm
lucky she was around (yes she was glad to be home, she would have been pretty
worried otherwise).

The news footage I saw last night makes me realise how lucky we are to live on
this side of the city where we didn't get much liquefaction. Lots of houses
are being condemned due to huge cracks appearing right through them. Some are
almost brand new but they had no chance when the ground opened up underneath
and ruined the foundations.

My work PC is now set up in my office at home but I'm not terribly motivated
due to the fatigue.

I'm keeping up to date with the news so as soon as the cordon comes off the area where
my office building is, I'll go in. I need to collect a few things so I'll probably
only have room for one camera lens (K10D and 24mm I think). I'd take our PS
as it's smaller but Janet has that with her for work.

Sorry for the long-winded post :)

Cheers,
Dave

Wow! I'm not sure Red is the proper word, here. Very nice. The
water gives it an almost acrylic look.

PESO -- That Confounded Bridge

2010-09-06 Thread Walter Gilbert
Here's a shot of an old, rather narrow bridge spanning the Mississippi
River, between Cairo, IL and Bird's Point, MO. I almost deleted it,
thinking it was an extremely unremarkable, standard photo taken while
crossing bridges by tourists the world over. But, when I got to looking
at the shadows and lines, I thought, Ah-ha! This might be
salvageable! So, I converted it to B/W and was pretty pleased with it
after all.

Thoughts? Critiques? Gratuitous insults?

Re: PESO -- That Confounded Bridge

Thanks, Paul. I really do need to work on my B/W eye. I've mostly
used it as a fallback position when a color shot just refuses to turn
out like like I want it. Which is strange, considering I've always felt
more drawn to B/W images when they're well done. I guess it just takes
a more discerning eye to spot a potential B/W shot, whereas potential
color shots are often self-evident to the point of smacking me in the face.

Thanks again.

I have to say, when I saw the subject line, and then looked at your
email address --which looked like caligula -- I wasn't sure I should look.

That aside, it is a wonderful shot. It's certainly a smile-maker.

  Thanks, Christine. Much appreciated.

I had to tinker with it quite a bit to make it OK to my eye. The sky
was extremely clear that day, and as you can see from the direction of
the shadows, the sun was pretty high in the sky. I had to really tone
down the highlight to give it any kind of mood at all.

OT: Potential gear bags

2010-09-05 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Hi all,

Yesterday, while having a lovely beverage at my favorite local
dispensary, I saw a gentleman wearing what looked to me like an
excellent camera bag -- only he was using it for diapers, bottles,
wipes, etc. for the baby he was carrying. It was an over-the-shoulder
type sling bag that hung across his torso and fell at about
waist-level. I asked him where he'd gotten it, and he told me he'd
ordered it from cheaperthandirt.com -- a shooting sports equipment
site. So, I checked the site, and unfortunately, that particular bag
wasn't listed there any longer. Still, they did have several there at
reasonable prices that appear to be potentially good candidates for
photography use, and at very reasonable prices compared to some of the
LowerPro gear I've seen.

I thought I'd pass along the link in case anyone might be interested,
and see if anyone had any experience using anything along these lines to
get pros and cons.

Re: Potential gear bags

2010-09-05 Thread Walter Gilbert
Inasmuch as I don't typically run into the Cali Cartel or other such
ruffians while birding, or shooting the rural landscape of western
Kentucky, I figure I could get away with carrying my equipment in a
shopping cart, but for the jarring and lack of protection against the
elements. I figure these would suffice in that regard.

instead of being attacked by muggers trying to steal cameras you'll be
attacked by drug lords trying to steal your weapons. Great idea!

Re: OT: Potential gear bags

Well, hey -- using one to carry photo equipment would only be the
latest in a long line of heresies for me, such as: drinking beer from a
tumbler, putting trash in grocery bags, using a BBQ lighter to set off
fireworks, and eating ice cream with a demitasse spoon.

I figure it would work pretty well in a deer stand or turkey blind this
fall.
