+1.
Cotty stole my thoughts! :)

But when I was taking this, related photo, if I had used a polarizer,
I am not sure if my car (the white one) would have shown up:

(or maybe it would've been enhanced... it depends on the polarization...)

Really nice shot Chris. I like how you've kept the outline of the car
free from background clutter. They only thing that would improve it
would be the use of a polarising filter to combat sky reflection.

Nice one!

You'll find the judge in the next competition where you show the whole car,
will ask why you didn't how just the badge and a bit of bonnet.

That is why club competitions aren't worth entering.

In this day and age when everything can be done in Photoshop, and to a
similar extent in video editing and SFX software, I tend not to use any
filters - except for one, and only for video. I have a 4X4 polariser for
the video camera - cost me a couple of hundred quid about 10 years ago -
and it works beautifully on windows, water, anything like that
especially out in the sunlight.

Of course being TV gear, you cant just have the polarising filter,
you've got to a have a matte box that *accepts* 4X4 filters ***and***
has a rotating holder - so of course that's another thousand quid!!

The advantage it has is that it comes with a huge detachable French flag
that really helps in low sun and keeping rain off.

Thanks Alan. And it is a nice car - he's still got it. It was scanned
on an Epson V600. I see from the other thread that you're doing battle
with a copy setup. I've tried various alternatives to scanning,
including a slide copier and photographing on a light box using a
macro lens, and can't get better than the V600.

Re: My attempt at car photography!

My comments are based on personal preference. And my personal preference is
based partly on what publications want. Some photographers do like the wide
angle look, but I’ve never been a fan. Here, if you had rotated the car, you
would probably have had to deal with your shadow to get the right framing.
That’s another argument or long lens photography!

Really nice shot Chris. I like how you've kept the outline of the car
free from background clutter. They only thing that would improve it
would be the use of a polarising filter to combat sky reflection.

Nice one!

Re: My attempt at car photography!

2017-03-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
Nicely rendered, but too wide a lens for my taste. It yields a "fat front end"
look. In addition to a longer focal length, a polarizer would have served you
well. Finally, try to shoot at magic hour when the light comes from a low
angle. That will illuminate the car's flanks.

Thanks Jack. Forgot to say that it was Ilford FP4 - probably using a
Z1 and Pentax-A 28mm.

While I was going through masses of negatives to decide on my PUG 20
entry, I came across a session that I did for a friend who has a 1970s
Aston Martin V8. I'd be interested in what the car buffs on the list
think of this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lkwexm6zmxcjyzx/John%20Aston%20Martin002.jpg?dl=0

Also my friend allowed me to spray his beloved Aston with water to get
this close-up of the badge:

Any comments gratefully received.
