Re: [english 100%] Stop whining; Start creating

2010-03-30 Thread Boris Jahn
lol ... all I've seen on your website is poor 3D without any quality ...
so stop talking and do some quality work.

Sorry for the forum, I don't remember it ever existed.
Why would I go there? Ask questions no one will be able to answer.
If someone send me a private e-mail, I will take the time to help him.

I paid for Realsoft, because the features were interesting.
The features are working, I am happy customer.
The features are not working, I contact RS directly and they solve the
problem.

Community is only for chatting about RS, 3D and new techniques.
The software is working, you cannot complain.

You are unable to create your vision in RS, but the software is working,
you cannot complain.

There is a manual + reference and everything is in there.
Anything else can be found on many books about 3D, tutorials and DVD.

For example a perfect skin shader can be found in Renderman Shading books.
You can then recreate them with the VSL.
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1598632868/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=485327511pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripepf_rd_t=201pf_rd_i=0201508680pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQBpf_rd_r=0C7R41SMX7HH1EZWG125

PS : perfect skin shader is worth nothing if the model and lighting is
not perfect : )

A 3D tutorial for maya or blender will work for RS and vice versa.

In the big studios, things are not always working as expected. Software
does not always react as supposed to.
They don't have the time to blame the software, they find a bypass or
another way to do it.

Only the user can be blamed for poor result.
Like I said many times, I could do anything I ever wanted with RS
version 1.0 : RS7 is only bonus.

I feel by reading some users post that they want someone else to do
everything for them.
3D is not a step by step. Find the way to get the shot you want with
your imagination.

RS has the potential to do everything you could ever imagine, maybe not
with a magic button like softimage.

RS attract technical people more than artistic people, maybe this is the
problem.

RS is not responsible to make you create fantastic images, they provide
only the tool.

Now with the incredible Avatar movie, new RS users will pop up with the
dream of doing the same thing.

RS can do an Aatar movie, but with 500 expert cg artists.

Carrara, Bryce and Poser website is full of beautiful images, probably
better than most created with RS.
And yet no professionals are using these softwares. Why other easy
stupid software create better images?
They have a magic button to create beautiful images, but they don't
provide the tools to create YOUR visions.

They are only good at creating beautiful images of a naked woman in a
shiny landscape, nothing else.

2010-03-29 Thread Boris Jahn

Hi Yuriy and all,

Of course a real working forum needed!
But I have the impression that Boris tired maintain it alone.
I can only take my hat off for his patience.

A big thanks for this words!
Just a few words for my giving up. I'm very sure that my website got
attacked by hired hackers and spammers of the competiting 3D companies.
I've connections to other forum leaders who are leading forums of more
general forums where there aren't any companies involved. They get some
spamming attacks but that's all. The RS forum got attacked with massive
spam attacks and even more from real hackers who were able to hijack my
website so that the provider took off all domains I was owning. I got
attacked from RS users that it's my job to get rid of this because I get
paid for this. Boys and girls be sure I spent a lot of money to keep
this running and didn't got any money at all. That got a full time job
and I even paid for this. And what did you gave me back: zero entries. I
asked for topics in several threads. Wow ... your suggestions went into
zero again.

That's what was your work. Wow!
Also I'm a bit frustrated about the programmers. I asked several times
for nice skin materials. Timo did the most sophisticated skin materials
but they were hard to handle with the hardware two years ago. Hair: I
think I got most out of it with lots of brainwork and very tricky tricks
but I didn't saw lots of updates on this topic.
Realcloth: don't ask how many unfinished projects are lying on my hd.
Lots of hours I spend to get the best out of it but the breasts of my
models are still penetrating the cloth which might be porno but I was
looking for a nice erotic dance.
Other people like zaug gave their best to put out great things like
greeblez but that were also stopped at some point because some things
didnt worked. The heaviest supporters were not supported.
I try to keep that unemotional but if the supporters won't be supported
they have the right to be frustrated.

Re: Snapping

2009-08-01 Thread Boris Jahn

Hi Henry and Fredrik,
yes exactly ... nobody is upset here. I think Fredrik did understood very
well what I wanted to say. There have been already some discussions on the
betalist concerning the toolbar. It's already totally overcrowded. Such
overcrouded that you had to scroll the toolbar. If it comes to modelling
only a good workflow is needed. That's for my point of view really given
with RS. The interface doesn't look really modern.
No way I really see your point. I also tried Bryce and Poser. That's
software for 3D beginners and also usefull if you need fast results and have
a parsimonious customer. Anything else I found both extremely boring. But if
you look for advanced 3D software it is impossible to put all in the
interface. You've to learn the software.

Really not a bit upset here only an other opinion.

Hi. I don't think anyone was upset. ;-)

I am guessing, but I think that the point Boris was making was that
when using a software regularly, after learning to use it, the
keyboard short cuts are essential for an efficient and productive work
flow. For learning, navigating menues and toolbars could be easier
than to memorise stuff, but not necessarily - having to switch between
different toolbars for performing simple tasks such as snapping to a
point sounds very much annoying to me.

Returning to the original topic, what is it exactly that you are
trying to do? To move a curve so that the end point is located on a
point of another curve, select the curve, start a move action using
the m-key or the move tool in the Transformation toolbar. Then hold
the comma key and left mouse button down as you drag a rectangle
around the point on the curve you want to move. Then release the left
mouse button, change view if necessary and then hold the comma key and
left mouse button down again as you drag a rectangle over the target
point.

Regardless of how the views were aligned, the two curves should now
intersect at the last selected point. At least it does when I try it.
I currently have v6, but this has been the same at least since v4.5 if
I am not mistaken.

2009/8/1 Henry Tjernlund henrytjernl...@gmail.com:

i'm sorry if I upset people with my criticism of RS. I don't mean to
be harsh. But when I spend half an hour trying to get things to snap,
and can't, its frustrating.

The other teacher I mentioned was not (my) teacher, but a fellow
teacher. He taught full time for his whole career. (He's retired now.)
I taught part-time for 11 years myself. I learned a lot from him, and
in that learning I would have to disagree. Teaching someone how to use
a program is not about speed typing. Its about concepts and
understanding why you are doing what you are being shown. In the
single course we had for 3D graphics and Animation, we used Bryce. I
was simple and easy and students quickly got results for little
effort. I doubt that any of them went on to use Bryce in a career. But
the point was to whet their appetite and give them an idea what it is
about. We had one 4-month course that met only twice a week to cover
enough material so that the student would know if that was something
that they wanted to invest more education in (at another school that
taught the subject in more depth.)

I myself am dyslexic and have even switched to a Dvorak keyboard
layout. It turned out not to help as much with spelling errors, as I
had hoped, but since doing that I have never experienced the
arm/wrist/hand fatigue as I used to with QWERTY. Many keyboard
shortcuts are geared toward QWERTY so some are actually more difficult
in Dvorak. But I also write fiction so the avoidance of arm strain is
good for me.

And back the the teaching. Versions ago in Photoshop some of the tools
used to require keyboard finger gymnastics. Then they put those same
options as icons up in the option's bar for that tool. That speeded
teaching. Before that I had to walk around and help almost half the
students to figure out the finder dance. When the options were
available as icons, the number of raised-hand interruptions dropped
noticeably.

Now whenever I try out a program, I aw well aware of how the interface
helps or hinders its use. The makers of RS might be brilliant at
figuring out the mathematics of making the program do something. But
the interface is not quite up to than same standard. And in the market
place, that can be a deciding factor.

Re: Snapping

2009-07-31 Thread Boris Jahn

Hi Henry,
I'd have a discussion with your teacher. For working productive and good
with your software you've to be a virtuso on the keyboard and the mouse or
use a different input advices no matter of the used software. It's like
typeing blind with 10 fingers. If you need snapping you would have to
activate the wished options in the tool bar. I can't see the difference
instead to swapping to 2d projection. Also the menu is already totally
overloaded.
To continue the discussion with your teacher: At work I've to feed a
databank with a lot of information. My most complain is that I can't work
here consistently with the keyboard. I've to switch very often to the mouse
which is very time consumming. All this theory of that you've to get it all
with the mouse in the menu is based on the idea to give beginners a good
step in the software but it's not a bit productive.

Just got back to RS after a couple weeks away. Still having problems
with snapping. I was going through one manual and using the pen tool
to make a sweep surface with curves. (One profile, on path, I guess.)
I decided after making the surface that i wanted to snap the two
curves together at their starting point. No matter what I did (5 key,
comma key, etc) I could not get them to snap in 3D. They would snap in
2D but be horrible off in the projection. What am I doing wrong?

BTW, why didn't RS simply put snapping options in a tool options bar?
One fellow teacher I knew didn't like it when software maker required
you to memorize what he called finger gymnastics. What is so
difficult about making a snap tool bar with options? I'm dyslexic
(yes, I am actually dyslexic which is why interfaces make a big
difference for me) enough to have to try and memorize 10 different
special (no other way to access the feature) keyboard commands for 10
different programs who's makers think that theirs is the only program
that you use.

Hi Chris,
many thanks! Yep I'm doing quite well. I had several operations at my back
and my right hand. The right hand is still not fully useable. At least not
for long time modelling. Tried different input devices but I didn't got
comfortable with them. So I don't spend so much time at the pc like in the
past. I've got five big dogs, hundreds of carnivorous plants and a family
(the family at last because they are all female and have the last word
anyway ;) ). They also need their time ;) While searching for my sss things
I found so many unfinished projects which are worth to be finished. I hope
I'll get my a** up and will make some new pics with RS.

Yes, I love the green statue one. Actually the others are great too.
If this is with the SSS-ish material then I need to learn to use it.

Hi Henry,
the hands were done with an older SSS-ish material. Timo improved after this
some things. Isabelle and the green statue render were done with the final
SSS-ish. You've to make lots of tests to get proper renders. So it might be
a good idea to take for the first a simple sphere for rendering. Don't
forget a back light.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with your cats. The pet laws here are also
sucking. I know how much one can feel for his pets.

We've got also a tomcat between our dogs. They are good friends.

calculating attemps which were impossible to use on complex human models
because of calculating times. Also keep in mind that a lot of it is done in
postprocessing which is limited by one cpu yet.

Hi,
it's quite a while ago someone asked what happened. I've got the feeling
that some guys are hired to attack it. I got so many attacks on my website
that my provider took me offline for a while and that was for all my
domains.
As a result I gave it all over to Matthias. We arranged that you only can
register after admins enabling. I'm still also admin but believe me the
registrations requests are incredible. The registrations are flooding and
99,9 % are f* d* spammers and it's quite uncontrollable who'll be a reall
member.
I got lots of personal probs with my health and was forced to concentrate on
other things. The last contest that was running on 3ddart inspired noone to
take part. There were over 1 members on 3ddart. I guess 200 were really
interested RS guys. The others were hackers, spammers ... whatever. Believe
me ... I'm really frustrated about the situation about the contest because I
think that it was an important part of the RS community which seems to be
very quite atm and I feel somehow guilty.

Ok ... send some input ... I think we need the contest again.

  Hey all,

It's been a while but I haven't forgotten Real! Working with it a lot except
for the last three months but I'm off again!

I'm currently working on a little character animation with a pineapple and a
banana. Tomorrow I'll start animating them.
I did some tests with the banana and it seems lattice mapping it to a nurbs
curve and then animating that curve works best. Any tips?

The textures I made myself from photographs, it required some precise UV
editing to get the banana right! Man this was way more work than I anticipated.
The pineapple too, I photographed a real one from 8 directions, put that
together in a single texture and face-mapped that to an SDS shere with
displacement mapping.

This is going to be a little 'temptation' short animation, we are hopefully
going to seduce a company into a short commercial ;)

  Cheers to V7!

Jason you lost Vesa's game!
I've been over ten years on this list but there has never been so much
negative energy. Garry (right with two R) tries to destroy this list.
Unfotunately the mailinglist admin seems to be tolerating pissing and
spitting on the most gratefull artists. I was considering the first time
since I'm here to leave the list. It's a big big shame that an amoeba
from budweiser and stripbar can bring so much trouble here.
First he asked for tutorials, then he gets them, oki then he asks for
project files. I guess he needs them to make the first great image on
his renderfarm. Man ... my bloodpressure goes now nowhere and I can't
understand what's going on. Toleration has somewhere it's end. For me
it's since last week reached.

Bye
Boris

This is not what you asked for Gary ?

You got know where near asking for this. Instead you were abusive to me and
eventually my wife for no founded reason other than your frustration of the
lists lack of response to your general ranting. You accused me of giving
nothing to the list of which I have disproved with these previously
mentioned emails alone and my years of contributions to the beta testing and
development which you have never been privee to see and could not possibly
have any idea of what you are talking about.

I have shown you in the previous emails my working methods which have NO
GREAT SECRET you keep eluding to, just hard work of tweaking and testing.
You now choose to ignore this information as I have proved you wrong and
instead find a new reason to complain to me and others.

Why was I suddenly to be named as solely responsible for the Realsoft user
list demise in your previous email, when GI is only a small part of Realsoft
3D ? You chose to slander and critisize me and now I have proved your
accusations to be misplaced you still cannot bring yourself to apologise
for your behaviour. I am amazed you are still allowed to voice your opinion
on this list and hope you are not permitted to speak to anyone else the way
you have to me ever again.

What is so odd is that you could have asked me in a nice pleasant manner as
you have managed to do in the past and I would have no doubt found the time
to answer your concerns as best I could.

You contradict yourself over and over. If you know GI very well then you
can surely apply a sky texture map as an illumination channel in a single
shader to a skydome sphere, throw in your scene, a GI shader, a light and
tweak the controls as explained. This is no secret and it's how I make my
images as I have told you over and over. You clearly have a lot more time
than many of us here, so if you are not doing it for you alone, perhaps you
can put your time where your mouse is and upload the project file yourself.

Somehow , you 2 percieve a tiny possibility that I am
asking for myself . If I was , I wouldn't attemp to shame
someone into finally sharing some concrete tutorials , of
  course .

Shame someone into creating concrete tutorials ??? None of us are under any
obligation to provide any tutorials especially in the manner in which you
ask. This kind of pressure would scare people away as they would feel any
kind of presence on the list would warrant they must create a tutorial to
stay around. This is a free community list to help each other out as and
when we can and know how to.

What you are suggesting is re-inventing the user list into a different
approach from what we have come to know. While you do have some points that
are worth discussing as you and the list currently are, your approach to
saving good information is entirely different.

What I was actually trying to accomplish , was to once
again point out that the Realsoft3D community's success
hinges on selfless giving and sharing via HTML tutorials .

Not by firing off emails while at work , or showing us
  yet another awesome render .

  Garry

Considering my work often starts at 8am and finishes between 8pm and 4am the
next morning I do not know when else I am supposed to email the list Gary...
really what planet are you on... it is now a crime to respond to the list
while I am at work ??? I also promise not to post any more renders to the
list if that will keep you happy as it clearly irritates you.

Now anyone else who would like to post a good image will now have to
think... hmmm if I post this image I am happy with, while I have 2 minutes
to upload it during my busy day. Will I get lambasted by Gary for not also
handing over the project file and a tutorial of how I did it This which I
do not have the time to do and my client would not allow me to release
publicly anyway hmmm maybe I better not upload it after all... another
good piece of work lost in cyber ether for no reason.

With your approach the list falls apart a lot quicker as no one will see any
 inspiring work any more.

 Jason

list would scatter the information more and more and that's excactly
what we didn't wanted.

We should not keep the knowledge to ourselves.
I'll show the example, I will update my website with the trick about
the displacement rendering speed (someone gave me a while ago on this
list).

It would be nice if you could show this at the wiki!?

it wouldn't be very hard to set up a server to archive these emails

or are they being stored anywhere already?

You'll find the links in the links section of the Realsoft website. Here
they are ... reaching far back. But I think for 2004 are the mails

Hi Neil,

Yes, I get the 45 degree steps using RMB+Alt+Shft, however my wish was
for a non-stepped realtime constraint on the x axis for the viewport
camera ... is this what you can get with a macro?

I think there is possibility for this. You need the numerical input
somewhere in your gui.
Select your object, DOUBLE click on the rotation handle. You will see in
the numerical input field open another input field Angle. Just type in
the angle and then enter.

ohooh ... that would make it possible to vote hundreds of times for one

The most important thing is to get a fair result.
I'm thinking of even to make a voting gallery which will be only

Re: Changing color of multiple ojects at once?

2006-06-30 Thread Boris Jahn
Hi Matthew,

So, to change the color of the lightcycle, I currently have to either
multi-select or individually select each of about 35+ objects and set
the color. I was wondering if there was some way to assign a tag of
some sort, or group the objects that make up the those that define the
color of the lightcycle, and change them all at once instead of
individually or multi-selecting all 35+ objects every time.

I think the easiest way would be to group the same coloured objects in
one folder and changing the colour for all objects in this folder via
properties-colour of the folder or insert a colour shader in the root of
this folder.
If you can't organize the objects in one folder you have to select all
the objects you wanna change the colour at once for one time. If you
have all the objects selected put them all in edit mode - hit ctr-a (for
selecting all points) and then create via Creation - Group a Group
object of this selection. If you need your objects later selected just
select the group object and hit Select in the control bar. All needed
objects will get selected.

you need the colour texture changed just change the texture in your
image object and all objects with the assigned image object will be

Re: Some WIP

2006-05-29 Thread Boris Jahn
Hi Matthias,

   With a question inside.

I hope I got the question right but you can use a scope-mapping on the
uv-set.
Create a customchannel (scope_1 or whatever)
Create in Surface properties of your vsl-shader Scope=Copy(scope1)
Put the uv-set in edit mode
Select the all edges accept the one you wanna have the soft edge
Set 1 in properties-col-Attribute-scope1 for the selected edges. The
edges with value 1 get the shader applied. 0 = no shader ... and
you can use other values then 1 and 0 (just mentioning ;))
That should work for bump, colour, illu ...

100 US$ Prize and other good News

2006-05-17 Thread Boris Jahn
A HUGE thanks to David M. Ingebretsen who supports the Realsoft 3D Image
Contest since 1996. David raised again the Prize and it's now 100 US$!!
This was already payed for the Light and Shadow contest and will be also
the prize for the actual running contest.

Great News from the DynAtomic front. DynAtomic Public Beta will be
released during this month. Also a new character animation tool
RealPuppet will be released. This is built around DynAtomic and has
features like advanced IK, physic interaction, 3D weight painting and
more.

You remember PrometheanFX? Betatesting of the SDK version of V2.0
particle editor will go into betatesting shortly. The compositing
package will come a couple of months later.

oh and I heard rumours that RS will support fbx in the next versions :)

The Realsoft 3D Image Contest will have 10 years anniversary in
November. So the October-December 2006 contest will be a special one.
I've started in the forum a thread to collect topic ideas for this
contest if you would like to contribute.

Many thanks!

Re: Fine nurbs curves go fuzzy

2006-04-25 Thread Boris Jahn
Hi George,

I'm putting some fur on an object using nurbs curves. When I set the
diameter of the curves to less than about 0.3 mm the rendered curves go
fuzzy (they look a bit like pipe cleaners).

this is an aliasing problem. I got around it setting the nurbs to
scanline and not to Ray TracE. Scanline hair won't cast shadows. To
get around this problem I copied the whole bunch of hair and set it Ray
Trace and set the thickness of this curves higher so that it won't have
this aliasing prob. Afterwards I set the thick Ray Trace curves rt
invisible. So the scanline hair will be visible and the Ray Trace hair
rt invisible but casting the shadows. You can set the count of the thick
hair less in the interpolator.

Hi Garry,

SDS seems like a piece of shit to me . In theory , it's brilliant of
course , but so was RPL . SDS seems like the RPL of the modeling world .
Once again I have to become a technical wizard be-fore I can create ...
 anything ! No ! No ! fuckin' NO !

I can't see what's the problem with sds. If you have worked with b-
splines before one must be stealthed ;)
One can't stress it enough: Keep it simple with sds. Try to get all out
of your mesh before you add another point, line or face. Try to make
your mesh only quadfaces.

I'm sick of it ! I just want to create ! I do not want to have my
brain conformed to the RS way , or the Maya way , or the SDS way ...

I think if you got this Aha for sds modelling there is no big difference
between those tools while RS provides for me a very straight way to
model. I tried wings, maya and another modeller I forgot the name. But
sure I'm used to RS since years.

I just want to start the S/W and create stuff ... if I can't then
fuck it I'll go render fractals instead .

get poser :)

Re: Magnetism Modeling Tool

2006-03-06 Thread Boris Jahn
Hi Garry,

It was a Magnetism Tool that you could just bring close to the
mesh and it would automatically push/pull the mesh within it's
radius of influence . This made modeling an absolute breeze , and
I'm sure it's being used somewhere in some SDS or nurbs modeling
 app's somewhere .

I think that was discussed a while ago before and as I answered that
there are the move/scale/rotate 2D/3D transformation tools which are
being able of the same no one complained. So ... I think we have them.

Is there any possibility to link a lightsource to a single object?
I mean, I have a scene with several objects and lightsources but there's one
lightsource that should only influence a certain group of objects. The rest

there is the lightsensitivity shader in the RS' materials in misc. You
have to apply this shader to the certain lightsource. For the objects
that should be influenced by this lightsource set the value for the
lightsensitivity channel in properties col-Attribute-lightsensitivity to
1.
